rekrap2 – I Built a Calculator in Survival Minecraft

This is a fully working calculator in Minecraft complete with addition subtraction multiplication and division but I have exactly zero idea how any of this works like do you see that what does all this even do so the point of this video is to see if an average guy

Like me can figure out how to make one because we’re going to use it to predict where the end portal is and beat Minecraft with map and I should be very clear when I say build because it’s strikingly easy to steal someone else’s design like this mod light matica

Literally shows you a hologram of what to build but that’s lame and not what this video is about I want to learn and understand how to build a calculator from scratch have I ever built something like this no no no also this isn’t survival Minecraft so that’s gonna make

It a little more tricky but I know we need a screen to like you know see numbers and stuff so I’m gonna try to put it here using Redstone lamps bang this is how we’re gonna represent one number it’s called the seven segment display because there’s like seven of

These two pixel laces and with it we can represent every number also I spent the past like hour Gathering a couple basic resources to make this but before we get any further this screen it looks ugly terrible you can barely tell it’s the number eight so from here on we’re gonna

Use this texture pack doesn’t that look so much better you can actually like tell it’s an eight the tricky part with seven segment displays though is how do we show all of these numbers on one screen like for an eight all of them need to be on but for a one you just

Need this section and this section to be honest like it’s very confusing this is when I started researching because I I have no idea what I’m doing and on YouTube I found this wonderful series that teaches all the basics of computational redstone I know fancy cool word for doing computational Redstone

Bro and these videos I gotta say they are so well made after one video like look at this I have a lever to type the number one and a lever to type the letter zero I mean I mean number zero number number this is the Redstone and

The way it works is pretty cool you see how we have seven of these purple lines each is going to a different segment on the display and all we’re doing is putting a torch above the Redstone online we want activated in this case it’s only removing the center one

Because we only put a torch above the purple line we want to power this one which is the center pixel we’re literally programming with redstone and if you remember what our one looked like from earlier we need to unpower everything except these two that’s all I’ve done with torches I put torches on

Every single line except for this one and this one which is pretty freaking cool now all we need to do is expand the whole thing to the left having a blue line for each number we want unfortunately this is gonna be kind of a long Redstone machine like so long I’m

Kind of stolen for things to say So long getting all these sheep here bro look how many sheep I was wrangling I was I was actually cooking dude and I tried to get every die too because if I don’t have this color coordinated my brain is gonna explode a little bit of a

Tangent but the only way to get green dye is Cactus I had to walk 8 000 blocks to get this oh that took so long okay let’s test it out shall we I have to do this in third person mode so I can look at it while

I’m pressing the levers I put them all up here so let’s test the first one this should be zero okay one yeah two nope that’s three okay actually yeah I forgot when I was programming them I just forgot to this should be four five six

That’s not a seven oh that makes sense I have a whole line of redstone torches that I I just forgot to place cool we can show any number with this display but I want to do problems with like two three number long inputs which means I

Gotta build like nine of these based off of the screen it’s gonna be freaking massive so maybe like a corner here maybe another Corner over here another Corner over here bro this thing you can barely see your other Corner bad news it takes half a stack of redstone lamps for

One number times that by nine that’s four and a half stacks I don’t have anywhere near that amount this is actually all of my Redstone lamps okay okay I need to look at this more oh also since I’m gonna be at this for a while I should probably mention there’s

A formula we need to learn to use the calculator to find the stronghold I don’t know it yet but I assume we can just learn it after we build the calculator because that’s gonna be pretty hard once I got all the glowstone I checked out a Bastion which had a lot

Worse loot than I thought and went mining for Redstone because that’s the other half to crafting Redstone lamps alright how many can we make not not that many it takes four stacks of redstone for a stack of lamps like this crafting recipe is broken knowing I

Needed a lot more Redstone I packed up my stuff for a long mining session was it a serious mining session I don’t know probably not it was two in the morning and I was with a whole bunch of friends when I found this single piece of gravel

Floating in midair and we were like will the gravel fall if we place a button on the underside of it so we all started taking bets whether or not the gravel would fall I think it’s gonna fall mom and I think it’s gonna fall who else

Thinks it’s gonna fall I think it’s I think it’s falling well after that don’t worry about the mining session got very serious I actually have a lot of red stuff I need to get well if you click the button will it fall though oh [Applause] that was it

All right bottom row is done we just need to add like six more on the top I don’t really know why that one is on specifically but we’ll debug Seth later this is gonna take a long time I’ve already used like six stacks of redstone blocks here’s a little time lapse of me

Building one number display I think it’s kind of interesting because I like half of the time spent building is actually programming the Redstone torches in for each number as you can see it took many days in Minecraft to get the displays where they are today for example we are

On day 69 I swear I did not plan it but the display should all be operational now I think it’s kind of interesting I use leaves as scaffolding for this whole thing because I’m using wool anyways to like mine some of the wool dude this thing is actually so tall

Oh I’m so glad I didn’t attempt to bucket clutch there dude if I spill water on this thing I’m gonna be so sad the reason I wanted to come up here though is to show you something I added on the top I was actually lying the entire time this row of purple things

It’s even more programming with redstone so what that means if I want to represent the number one I do on off off off three offs and one off and if we go look at the display it’s a number one our number two is off on off off and if

We look at the display this time the display shows too our number three is on on off on the display is the number three bro this is so sick unfortunately this doesn’t do any math also yes I made a bubble column to get up here I think

It’s so cool but the question still stands how do we do math with redstone and honestly I have no idea until I started learning pretty much everything you’ve seen so far I’ve learned from one series on Redstone from V1 and only matte back you’re brand new to Minecraft

Digital logic or even both don’t worry today we’re going to start from the absolute beginning and this series started giving me the foundations of redstone knowledge I learned that for my calculator I should start with the simplest addition then move to subtraction multiplication and finish

With division which is by the way by far the hardest so I’ve been trying to make a simple addition calculator and this is what I’ve come up with this monstrosity and it doesn’t even work like I think I know the theories behind it but it’s spaghetti wiring and I can’t figure out

What’s wrong you want to see matbat’s calculator it’s this that’s it before we get any further you should understand there’s no real good way to represent a number like seven with redstone torches we need we need nine different numbers and you can’t really do that with these

Things but what you can do is have an on and off signal you want to know what’s also an on and off signal binary that random assortment of ones and zeros you see in movies and stuff yeah it’s a literal number system look at this if we

Have off on off on or zero one zero one that’s a five in binary instead of our normal number system which has the ones tens hundreds and thousands place binary has the ones twos fourth and eighths place place which is kind of weird to wrap your head around at the beginning

But you can think about it like this the ones places on so we have a one here and the fourth place is on so we have a four there four plus one is five therefore this is five in binary it’s the only way I can do actual math with redstone six

Sadly actually building the adding machine wasn’t going very well I’ve been able to add one and one that’s literally all I’ve been able to do one plus one when it gets two plus one oh my gosh it just breaks everything breaks it’s so hard to explain how hard it is it’s like

Even if you know the theory of how things should work you’re not implementing it in the way you think yeah dude this is so hard I am so frustrated right now I’ve just been trying for like two days to build a vertical adding machine like in binary

This is four plus four it should equal eight but it outputs four bro it outputs four good morning good morning I don’t know if I said I had a working Adder last night but I definitely didn’t if I said I had one I was lying I was a filthy liar but today

I redesigned it it’s it’s a lot more colorful more organized than ever and it works I’ve tried out every combination of uh binary inputs and I get the correct binary output I feel like a wizard bro I feel like a wizard just like that I had a working Adder which

Felt so rewarding and on top of that subtraction subtraction was so easy you literally just invert half the signals and add one that’s it then you have a subtractor and I was on a roll too the multiplier the multiplier isn’t even that bad it’s basically stacking a whole

Bunch of adders next to each other and so while it is big and bulky and that might be hard to build in the survival world I had one that worked this is where things get harder Division division is a beast you don’t have a simple trick like inverting an adder or

Using a whole bunch of adders to do division no no no you need systems built from the ground up but I was hopeful I was at least on the right track this is my progress us so far I think it’s kind of cool we start over here at the very

Basics these are simple logic gates and they basically build off each other making more complex machines and tell the divider which I haven’t had the best luck with but I’ve had some luck if we look at all of our stuff these are some like preliminary adders that I made

There’s the multiplier over here this thing this is our first divider which is cool but but it can only use numbers that are less than 15. so if we want to double its size we get this thing by the way still not big enough so we have to

Double it again and we get this thing bro by building in this survival would actually be horrendous just wiring up all of these orange lines in Creative actually abysmal dude thankfully I think there’s a more compact version although it’s going to be a lot more complicated

Like so complicated it’s not even in his Redstone Series so I’m gonna see if I can get on a call with matbat to help me build it also we haven’t built any of this stuff in survival yet partly because I’m procrastinating but also we need to gather a lot of wolves I’ve been

Changing the color of these guys Gathering I don’t know a couple Stacks couple different colors and Redstone supplies I got all of this like last night took a couple hours dude this project is so much bigger than I thought I was about to say I think I can see the

So much with it I mean it’s how your computer is doing stuff right now right and that’s insane dude this was my first attempt at Adder because like I like you build one why did you dig into the second Stone instead of just bringing it up I even showed him my IRL notebook

Where I took literal notes on his videos the footage honestly pretty shaky I was I was kind of nervous to meet him I mean it’s it’s an amazing start so far this is already like way better than most people would be able to do in six days

All right I’m feeling a lot better Matt bat gave me some really useful information but he didn’t show me how to build a divider yet I’m getting on another call with him because the dividers apparently like really complicated in the meantime though I’m gonna build the adder

Oh my gosh what are you doing in here all right we have one layer of the adder done if we relate this to regular addition it’s essentially having one row of the addition cool thing about binary we’re only ever doing zero plus zero one plus zero or one plus zero which makes

It super easy to build a bigger calculator all you need to do is stack more sections on top of each other so if we do one plus zero we get a one but if we do one plus one we get a two wait hold up hold up I I forgot some red

Stuff we get a two this is this is what a two looks like in binary okay Layer Two is complete so let’s give this a test on the right side we can put two because remember that’s the twos place on the left side we can put three

Because that’s two and one and our answer is five okay I think I’ll add the rest of the six layers on top of this and we should have a working Adder sir Dude I just clutched with a bed so I suppose the next logical step is just put the subtractor right next to it boom and that’s the subtractor I wasn’t kidding when we basically hijack an Adder like look all we’ve done is ADD torches on the front to invert the

Signal and then added one more torch on the bottom so now seven minus five is two look at that this is half of the calculator and you might be saying wreck that’s one corner that’s another Corner that’s all the space you’ve taken up so far is it really gonna be that big

Yes yes it is next up is the multiplier for the multiplier I’m going to use gray wolf only because I have so much of it I was planning to have gray like connect all of the components together but I just have an absurd amount I need to get

Rid of this I decided to put the multiplier next to our other two operations that way we can decide which output we want a lot easier and as you can kind of see from the time lapse the multiplier is basically like three adders stacked together that’s a little

More complicated than that because we had to add this like yellow bit this is basically what controls the calculation and then I’ve added these red and green lines these are basically feeding all of our inputs into the three different operations but from there all we do is decide which one we’re doing addition

Subtraction or multiplication I know we haven’t done division yet but I think it’s about time we have some sort of user interface basically the place we can put our numbers and tell the calculator what we’re doing with them and I think it’d be really cool to have

It in the air that way we have a better view of the calculator and we’re like off the ground so probably this the site’s probably good oh and you know what I have a good idea what if we make it what if we make it out of diamond

Block I’ve mined so many diamonds while looking for Redstone I I didn’t have a purpose for them but how funny would that be our control panel is just made out of diamonds and as per usual we’re gonna use a different color of wool for the control system these four orange

Lines are the binary numbers and these numbers these are our input numbers so if I click one on our Orange Lines we get a zero zero zero one which is one in binary two is zero zero one zero three is zero zero one one and every other

Number has a binary associated with it cool thing about this is we can just take the binary outputs and directly plug them into the display that’s what all this orange wool is for it also does some other odd jobs like being able to switch from your top input to your

Bottom input because for math you need like two numbers it has a simple function but it took like two hours to put together because I had to keep sharing wool and even grind some more Redstone resources okay okay okay okay we’re about to do our first test watch

This watch this you see how they’re all blank by pressing one we should get a one we should get a one we should oh my gosh we get a one and then if I type a two we should get a one and then a two because we typed in 12.

And then if I type in a three we should get one two three oh it’s so close every time I have a mistake like that I have to go adventuring through the jungles of my Redstone wiring to figure it out all right the single torch was that the

Problem yeah yeah and then I also have a clear button the clear button should turn them all back into zeros let’s go next up I don’t want three zeros to be showing there should only be one so I need to add some zero detection circuits so in our current state we should only

Have one zero which we do okay I’m gonna try all the cases with zero to make sure they work so like a hundred which also works now that we can input numbers I feel it’s only right we should fill out the screen I’ve I’ve left these gaps for

Far too long I understand now why calculator screens only include the numbers this is so expensive dude so much so that I’m completely out of redstone and about to go on vacation I need to go on the craziest mining session anybody has ever seen Foreign I’ve been mining for a little over an hour but we have close to five stacks of redstone which should be good so I’m just gonna find a lava pool and then head out of here Bonsai oh this cave looks so good though maybe I should keep mining oh my gosh

Dude you could not believe the urge I had to keep mining this cave is the best cave I’ve seen in like a century I think I’m gonna compromise with myself we’re gonna head back because we might have enough Redstone to finish the calculator but I’m gonna make a portal to come back

Because if I’ve run out of redstone I am so coming back here man it’s also probably smart to get a lot of quartz on our way back for the comparators yeah I was just realizing my arm is getting pretty damaged normally I’d have mending on it so I wouldn’t ever need to worry

About armor durability but the more I think about it there haven’t been very many cases where my diamond armor is actually broke I don’t know it’s like sometimes we do things in life because it’s the status quo and we don’t actually think about it like I don’t

Actually need mending armor I only do it because that’s what I feel like I should okay enough ranting about mending enchantments we got a calculator to build speaking of calculator I actually got on a call with matbat to finally flesh out division he’s actually been so helpful responding to all my questions

Although when we got on a server together he was he was pretty dang lag your superpower is that you can build as fast as light but you can only do it every five seconds you gotta record some of this bro oh I’ve been recording don’t worry it took

An hour or two but we finally nailed out a design for division that was not this monstrosity plus the small one is actually able to go to more decimal points oh also matbat showed me some of his Redstone oh my Frick bro what the heck oh Along the load bro what yeah he’s a genius we’ll leave it at that in the meantime I’ve made these two buttons to basically control what input it is green is one blue is two I also changed the clear button to be a glass block I think

That’s kind of funny but now for the hardest part division I’ve cleared out some space and picked out some new wool Cutters so we start with a regular Adder because all great things in life start with an Adder We’ll add a torch on the front to turn it into a subtractor next

We add this orange line which controls whether we take the output or input We’ll add a brown line out the front as well as a Target block and then we wrap everything back into itself with this green line ta-da now I gotta go through and synchronize this whole thing

Basically making sure these repeater timings are exact if any single repeater is off by any single tick assaulting breaks so I gotta be very careful everything seems to be timed appropriately so we just gotta stack this up eight without messing up anything A little update on the divider we finished all eight rows and added a couple extra wires that you’ll see down there is the output and I just tested it out to see if it worked for the first time it did not work so I I looked at

The replay of uh it working and I I forgot one piece of redstone right here and I I think it might work this green and red Tower are the inputs so I’ve put five divided by one which should be five hopefully all the way over here we get a

Five as an output looking good so far okay oh this is looking really good this is looking really good no way I get this first try bro and I get the five since it’s a divider this right here is the decimal point so this is the one twos in fourth place so

The outputs of our machines but BCD is the way we communicate with our display and you don’t need to know how it works all you need to know is you have to fill like this entire space with redstone dude this took an actual billion years because it’s not like normal building in

Minecraft I have to intentionally place every single block I’m literally programming if I’m one off the entire thing’s broken and by the way this isn’t even have it I have to replicate this entire thing on the other side like 10 bigger in Greenville but plot twist I

Built the entire thing one block off so I had to destroy it and rebuild the entire thing I’m sorry I couldn’t go over this converter in better detail but the simplified version is the orange bits like every section of these adds three the lime subtracts three and through

Some magical formation we turn binary into BCD the problem though is if a single Redstone piece is missing the entire thing is broken which by the way did happen I had to go through and debug the entire thing basically I sent a whole bunch of test values through here

I looked at the end and if they weren’t the correct values on the other side I had to go digging deep into the Redstone mechanism to figure out what it is like I have to play detective dude following these lines I’m like okay so these two

Are on plus that one that means this is an 11 on the other side it should convert into an eight oh my gosh it’s stuff like this that I just throws off the whole machine oh also I had other mishaps like this Long story short the hardest part is over but we’re still not done we successfully converted from binary to BCD but we need another system to convert from BCD to Binary that monstrosity also took all of my Redstone so I had to go on another mining session

We have a decent amount I’m hoping this finishes it also I need more stone for repeaters and and this is where I’ve been getting it it’s it’s entirely man-made I don’t know why I dug it in this formation it just kind of looks pleasing to look at but hopefully that’s

All of the stone we need to mine and like usual we’re gonna start with an Adder because everything seems to start with an Adder this time though we’re gonna put a sticky piston on the output because we’re gonna take this and wrap around to the front once we’ve inserted

The purple line into the correct places we need to stack it up eight oh also we have to build a second one of these because we have two inputs to the calculator I can feel myself getting so fast building Redstone but we’re also running out of resources way faster like

Near the end I completely ran out of purple wool now we need to take our inputs when we press a button those four Redstone lines and wrap them all the way under this machine into the converter and I plan specifically for this moment because if we switch this to Glass we

Should be able to hijack this signal and send it this way that’s what this orange line is it’s also connecting the two machines though so we can toggle between which number we’re inputting to make sure the toggle happens properly though we have to add a couple comparators and

Then put a piece of redstone on the side so we can lock them dude I just want to be done I feel like I’ve been so close to finishing for the past like two days IRL but it just it just never seems to end okay there we go this line controls

Whether we’re typing in the number one or number two not like if it’s the number one or two but if it’s the top or bottom number dude okay okay this is the one you look pretty sick bro this is all survival too okay okay I was lying when

The last thing we needed to do was convert between binary and BCD I want to show a symbol of whatever calculation we’re doing it’s like a plus sign and minus sign basically I figured out what signs we’re using so purple is divide red is times and then if you overlap

Them all you get the different segments you need to program and the rest is just programming with redstone torches oh yeah I need Target blocks do I have Target blocks oh I do is uh he actually might be the perfect amount this is me building it kind of uh say multi-mold

This should be the last thing I’m pretty sure we just need to hook everything up also oh my gosh what I meant to say is this machine kind of represents my mental state it is so messy I’m just done the wool colors don’t mean anything it was kind of just like throwing things

Wherever I could there’s dirt everywhere but it works it works and we just have to hook everything up to the control panel well I kind of built the control panel we got four new buttons it’s kind of cool we got addition subtraction multiple okay you know what these are

But when we click it it shows it up here it’s a it’s a little glitchy at the beginning but it does work so that’s Edition subtraction multiplication and division which I think looks the coolest oh whoa that looked wacky for a second all of the display is hooked up

But everything behind the scenes is not which is gonna take a lot of wool I do have a plan now I’ve been saving all of my green and red wolf the wall I saved up not even close to the amount of wool I needed and it’s become a reoccurring

Theme over this project that I think I can finish in a I think I have enough resources but really I’m like a fifth away there it’s actually insane during these clips alone I had to go mining on three separate occasions because I kept running out of redstone I had to start

Using dirt I’m just like out of wool entirely be honest I thought this would be done three days ago three days I’ve spent toiling grinding away it’s day 235 of this Minecraft world but I’m done every piece of redstone perfectly connected well hopefully perfectly connected the plan all along has been to

Use this calculator to predict where the end portal is but there’s one problem I don’t have the formula to do it it’s a very Advanced speedrunning tactic and there was only one man who could teach me we want to get the eyes like as perpendicular as possible because like

It so then it’s just 200 divided by 3.1 yep okay what I like to do is let me just pull this up oh frick I I I’m typing it wrong it’s okay I’m messing up I’m messing up my fit 200 divided by oh so 64. okay
