If you’re looking for engaging lessons for your students that can incorporate any unit that you’ve been working on Minecraft is a no-brainer I have yet to meet a class that won’t be deeply engaged when I give them a project that involves Minecraft education I’ll show You a really quick and easy ways to use chat GPT to develop these projects and ideas let’s get Started welcome to AI for teachers I’m Jen twadell before I hop into the Minecraft I just wanted to make a quick announcement I’m really excited I finally launched my website AI number4 teachers. Au if you’re looking for in-person workshops and professional development to incorporate AI into your daily planning and lessons to save Yourself some time please head over and check out the opportunities I have available I will be running workshops in early 2024 for anyone in the Brisbane area and I am available to any schools or teachers who’d like to set up some professional development opportunities all right let’s get into This Minecraft I know you’re going to love it because your students are going to love it I use a two prompt method I first start out by prompting that I want chat gbt to make some suggestions about ideas I let chat GPT know the year of the students that I’m teaching and any Areas that I want it to incorporate such as a mathematical concept or something like that so my first prompt generally starts out something like suggest a Minecraft Project for year three students and incorporate area and perimeter so from there it usually we’ll give you five or six suggestions with This one it talks talked about farming developing a theme park developing Gardens and you can look through the different ideas it will just give you a few dot points of some suggestions and from there you choose the idea that you think your students will engage in best and then you use an Additional prompt to develop that first initial suggestion for your second prompt you’re going to ask chat gbt to expand on one of the ideas that you’ve chosen so I went with the farm theme and my second prompt was create a project outline for year three students include the project objectives and some Parameters and also incorporate that same concept of area and perimeter so then it is able to produce the whole basically write up for you it’s actually turned this into sort of like a lesson plan and put it into different weeks so it starts off with the objective it Starts off with what you would do um in the first couple of weeks and it’s really broken the project down something that you could kind of run parallel to your teaching of area and perimeter which I quite like um so it gives some ideas as you’re teaching the different concepts of what The students could be doing and then at the end it gives some parameters such as the students need to incorporate at least three different different paddocks of different shapes they will be calculating the perimeters and area as they go and it suggests that at the end of the unit that they’re going to Present and collaborate with their peers with what they’ve produced and it even gives a few suggestions for assessment criteria so obviously this is all editable once you go down the bottom you can click that clipboard that will then copy it and you just paste it into word You can use any or all of the suggestions that it’s given to you and make any edits as you see fit but I think you can see that it’s quite quick and easy and it can generate some really fun and engaging ideas a other project that I did for my Year five students recently that’s a little bit more complex but worked really well was a project on budgeting so I used the exact same process I asked chat GPT for different project ideas to incorporate budgeting and because we had just done budgeting and we also did an Enterprise unit where the students had Developed different products the product idea that I really liked that it came up with was a virtual business venture so I actually ended up getting my students to take the product that they made for their Enterprise unit and Design a shop front and store to sell but because we were also doing budgeting At the same time my students had to calculate each brick and use numbers um or Excel whatever your students are familiar with and keep track of how much they were spending as they were building their shop my students absolutely loved it they designed it on graph paper first And then they started building it in Minecraft and as they were building they were keeping a running budget in numbers and they came up with some really creative ideas so the great thing about chat GPT was is it actually once I used my second prompt it actually gave me a really Detailed outline of how many units each type of brick would cost and how many units different things like Windows and Doors would cost so I didn’t have to come up with any of that by myself so the prompt I used for that was expand on the idea of the virtual business venture Write a project outline for students and give them parameters and budgets that they need to stick to include all the aspects they will need to design and incorporate in their business so from that prompt it gave me the objective it gave me an explanation of what they were To design it gives them some tips on the things that they might want to include like a logo Etc and then it gave them some ideas about the financial tracking that they would have to do and the best bit for me was they then also included some ideas of different bricks are going To cost two units or three units I ended up giving my students a $10,000 unit limit cuz I wanted them to sort of go all out talks about landscaping and different specialty items items as well so you can see that that would have taken me a considerable amount of time To come up with on my own and that was just created with a quick quick prompt and engagement was definitely high for this project so head over to chat jpt and give it a try remember to also check out my website AI forte.
