S smps were one of the biggest genres in the Minecraft Community for a long time some of the biggest s smps are racking in thousands of live viewers these s smps could be getting millions of views per video they make but despite that the genre has significantly died off what

Was one of the most popular genres of Minecraft content has become oversaturated and stale but to talk about the downfall I’m going to need to get into the rise of these s smps also I’m not talking about any normal Minecraft SMP I’m talking about YouTuber

Or smps YouTuber or S smps have been a thing for a long time but they haven’t really become a mainstream concept until more recently the only real old example I can think of is hermitcraft but I uh I never paid attention to hermitcraft I actually I I don’t know when it started

Play on the server you had to be live because there were so many beloved and not so beloved creators on the server people instantly became like attached to it not long after we got basically the same thing in the form of SMP Earth which I’m pretty sure was just the same

Thing on the map of the Earth I don’t really know I was like 13 at the time of when these servers existed and you might think that was young or that sounds young but also this was 4 years ago I’m about to be able to vote these server

Started this catalog because next year the dream SMP was born in 2020 and This Server being released was like the Albert Einstein opener atomic bomb moment of the Minecraft Community the dream SMP being created started this trend of Minecraft s smps where a YouTuber or a streamer would get a bunch

Of other YouTubers or streamers and they would start doing more I’m going to kill your dog no which is cool but then you realize hundreds of thousand thousands of people are doing this a lot of people were really just doing this to be the next dream SMP and get big and obviously

It didn’t work and I can’t even lie I was also guilty of this I mean I didn’t really try and do lore that came later and down the line and even when I did it I wasn’t even in the small streamer Community all right which don’t worry the small streamer Community is

Important for almost the entirety of this video but like I said a lot of these servers were trying to be the next dream SMP and the thing is is when a lot of these servers were trying to be the next dream SMP the actual dream SMP

Was at its peak the server was crazy big an average lore stream on This Server would reach 100 to 200,000 live viewers D I think one of the biggest lore streams had like 700,000 all right side tangent I wanted to look up and confirm if that number

Was accurate not only is it accurate but there is an official Wikipedia page about the dream SMP we have gotten to a point where a server on a video game started by a YouTuber has its own Wikipedia page that’s how popular this Minecraft server was because of its huge

Amount of popularity it is obvious that people would want to do the same thing hoping maybe they’ll become popular because of it and this is where this next era of s smps began because after small streamer lore s smps were thing they started to evolve and when I mean

Evolve I mean it started this era I like to dub application SM peas all right look let me just get this out of the way these servers really salt my apples they really grind my gears they really unckle my fancies look these were the worst [ __ ] thing to ever come out of this

Community I don’t really know exactly how it started but the earliest server I know of to try something like this was this smpp called smpp on air in itself it’s not a very it wasn’t a very popular SMP outside of the community in the Minecraft Community this SMP was huge

Look the thing is when you make a server where you have to apply to join these two things started to happen one you’re getting a bunch of random people who don’t know each other in a Minecraft server together which a lot of these people could either become good friends

They could either never meet or they’ll just hate each other they don’t know these people and the thing is when you just shoved into a place with a bunch of new people you don’t know you’re not going to guarantee you’re going to like everyone and it was a smart strategy to

Try and this application idea where they would make you tweet out a video applying for the server with a hasht it was smart but then eventually just became a big popularity contest and even I am guilty of trying this too again a lot of people wanted to get popular I

Was one of them and you know it didn’t take long for me to realize this idea is stupid and if it wasn’t like video applications they would just be like hey just tweet out a hashtag with your content or something which basically just means how many subscribers do you

Have on YouTube and that’s how they would tell if they want you in their S&P now no normal Norman or silly Sally would want to be in any Minecraft SMP okay no there needed to be something special about them a lot of these servers would either have lore you know

These crazy over complicated lore plots that made 0 or they would just be like we have a bunch of YouTubers which again it became a big popularity contest the thing is if you weren’t pulling in good views or if you didn’t have a lot of Twitter followers you’re probably not

Going to get into any of these Minecraft smps despite the fact that you just want to meet people I found this short Twitter thread by a Creator named uh WHYY it’s Oliver right and the thread mentioned how a lot of streamers would often get denied from s smps because

Had spent multiple days grinding on this one Minecraft SMP because you know I like playing Minecraft with people Minecraft S&S are fun don’t get me wrong so back in back in like 2021 I was in this one Minecraft s SMP and uh I remember when I was grinding on it there

Have fun with other creators with a in a goofy Minecraft server what actually happened is the owner made this m inecraft server so he could make videos on it and then get a bunch of views on those videos so he could get into another Minecraft server Minecraft Survival just playing

Multiplayer Minecraft had somehow become a networking scheme and the thing is when these servers became these big networking schemes people didn’t realize that they’re just doing the opposite of why s SMP succeeded in the first place the second people tried to force that same magic is when it failed and since I

Just mentioned the LIF steal smpp let’s talk about life steal smpp for a second now I want to get this out of the way the actual S&P has done nothing wrong the members in the S&P have done nothing wrong all right look life steal S&P started this trend of every Minecraft

People just wanted to recreate so all these gimmick smps started showing up the problem with these servers is that while the gimmicks and whatever they could be cool and unique the actual content being produced on these servers was so lifeless and stale this one YouTuber named Pally did this great dive

Into the Mr platform and how creators make their content I think inadvertently that effect has possessed the Minecraft Community these Minecraft s SMP videos that around 2021 and 2022 were just glorified Mr Beast videos in Minecraft now not really even Mr Beast videos more like Mr Beast clone videos

They are all edited purely to keep attention span they are all pretty void of emotion and they’re basic basically just exact copies of each other the thing is I’m not saying these videos are bad the creators put in effort and time into these videos the editing style

While it is just the same editing Style on every single one of these videos it’s not easy to replicate but it’s the thing it’s the way they’re edited the way they’re presented the way they’re promoted make them all feel exactly the same I think the creators who make these

Videos are very talented and honestly I understand why they make them I mean come on but the thing is when you just try and do what everyone else is doing that thing you’re trying to do becomes very void of emotion it has no creativity it lacks substance and the

Reason is because there’s so many people doing this same thing it all started because of these life steal SMP trapping my enemy videos or something like that and they were entertaining at the time but that’s because only a select few creators were doing it only the life

Steal S&P members were really doing it but after people realized how you know promotable these videos were everyone started doing it every small Creator started doing it every Creator were making videos with almost the exact same titles similar thumbnails it was so stale it’s the same way that these Mr

Beast clones would just come by and then do exactly what Mr Beast did and then get good views small Minecraft youtubers would do the same same thing off of each other hell it’s hard to say this genre is SMP content it’s just Lifest steal edited videos LIF steal revolutionize

This genre and that’s how it ties into this whole popularity contest idea the thing is even the people who own these smpp is would want their creators to make the same content so the SMP would get popular if you didn’t or couldn’t make SMP videos there was no chance of

People getting into these s smps people who just wanted to make friends would get left out of things streamers would get left out of things cuz they didn’t make YouTube videos all these creative minds would get left out of these smps and everything because they didn’t make life steal type videos because they

Didn’t just do what everyone else did and the thing is Minecraft is a game that strives itself on creativity but when everything Minecraft related feels so stale what’s the point and this staleness of Minecraft content has been a thing for a long time to be fair it

Wasn’t just the S SMP genre the reason why everything Minecraft related feels the same nowadays is because YouTube awards that type of content with high viewership the thing is YouTube Tik talk and all these other platforms just promote this idea of when you do what

Other people do it’s going to do well oh my God and over the last few months a lot of these gimmick smps and the content being made started to die down quite a bit there are also still big lore smps around like the q&p which I don’t really pay attention to I think

It’s just um you people speak multiple languages and then there’s like eggs or something and that’s all I know but these servers are mostly only really still popular because they have wellestablished names in them who were either large creators before the SMP genre or profited off of revolutionizing

This genre like the life seal and while I do think this unoriginality thing is a big reason why s smps aren’t nearly as popular today as they were in 2020 2021 I actually think there’s a bigger reason the Corona virus all right look let me tell you something the pandemic

Is when Minecraft content flourished during the pandemic everyone was stuck inside 24/7 and with everyone being stuck inside they had time on their hands specifically a lot of teenagers who were in school and that’s why servers like the dream SMP got so popular people were stuck inside so

Often that they could just watch whatever and people had the time to be able to make these servers people had the time to run these servers people had time to make content on these servers and most importantly people had time to watch these servers I personally started making content during the pandemic I

Started streaming in June 2020 which was Peak quarantine you were really not allowed to leave your house at that time as people started going back to school and back to work people people had significantly less time on their hands creators didn’t have as much time to edit their videos and viewers didn’t

Have as much time to watch those videos and that’s again where this unoriginality aspect chimes in now that people have less time on their hands they have to pick and choose what they want to watch more they can’t just binge every S&P video that shows up on their

Page it’s actually the same thing that happened with movies in the box office people couldn’t just go and see every movie they wanted to so a lot of bigname movies actually weren’t doing nearly as well Disney as a company started doing significantly worse for example because of this if a movie doesn’t interest

Someone they’re not going to go watch it even if it’s part of the Marvel Universe it’s the same thing with these YouTube videos so to answer the question are Minecraft s smps dying I do think that the S SMP genre has lost a lot of traction and it’s definitely clear that

S&P content has taken a huge plummet actually even uh Google Search terms can confirm that but it’s not just Minecraft smps that lack creativity today Minecraft content as a whole needs Innovation it needs fresh ideas even the developers of the game have lacked a lot of creativity which is ironic what made

Minecraft popular in the first place was its creative innovation in the early days of Minecraft we were seeing so many fresh ideas so many new things and it’s not just with content it’s with Minecraft servers mods everything but at the end of the day even if if Minecraft

Content is stale doesn’t mean it has to stay that way the way I see it yes smps have become very stale and they have started to die down but once people start innovating and being more creative we might just see a rise in the genre
