Hello again internet shin here i know sometimes gone by between my recent videos been dealing with sciatica very painful but i wanted to make this video to briefly talk about something that i’m surprised i’ve never talked about before i’ve mentioned it in quite a few videos Now but never made a video on the subject itself and figured that since i’ve been making videos recently about the different damage buffs and damage stacks that i should make a video talking about this too it’s something i’m sure others are aware of too but was largely not the case in The reddit community and was absolutely not the case in the discord community at all and what is this exactly so now and then you might hear me talking about damage buffs in terms of multipliers and flat modifiers in my videos what do i mean by that when flames of the nether was released We were introduced to an enchant called pain cycle that said it would cause the player to lose health whenever they land a hit in order to build up pain stacks once you have five your next hit will do quote unquote quintuple damage or five times the amount of damage This was really powerful and was introduced in the same update that gave us reckless an enchant which traded sixty percent of our max hp for an 80 damage increase which again sounded huge albeit not worth dying two and a half times faster just to kill enemies 1.8 times faster but then when encrusted Anchor came out in the following hidden depths dlc which was a hulking behemoth of a weapon that could deal 2 million 147 149 damage in a single hit all of us went crazy in the discord community with theoretical damage values that we could reach with this monster All of us were estimating damage in the billions for instance i had an encrusted anchor with critical hit for triple damage and pain cycle for quinn tuple damage enchanted on it and i was using full metal armor which has a 30 melee damage boost on top of that the armor Was enchanted with cowardice and reckless for an additional 40 and 80 damage boost respectively i had a strength potion active for double the damage and a shadow brew too as people believed at the time multiply my damage by four all along with a gong of weakening to triple my damage If we plug all of these numbers in taking the anchor’s base two million one hundred and forty seven thousand one hundred and forty nine damage and multiply it by all of these values first multiplying it by thirty percent for the armor then forty percent for cowardice then eighty percent for reckless then Multiplying it by two for strength potion then by three for critical hit and another three for gong of weakening and then four for shadow brew and finally multiplying it by 5 for pain cycle we get a staggering 2 billion 532 million 261 644 damage in one single hit But if you remember my months old video where i one shot mushroom monstrosity with an encrusted anchor how much did this combo of damage actually do 280 million 202 944 damage still a big chungus amount but not nearly as much as i should have done at the time i didn’t really notice Because i wasn’t looking at the damage numbers nor did i know how much help the boss had i thought i should have one shot it but i let it go for at least a day what happened to cause my lackluster damage compared to the damage i should have done Was everyone’s assumption of how strong shadowbrew was wrong well yes but that’s not what’s going on here in fact shadowbrew is stronger than people thought so why then did my damage take a huge cut to understand this i need to first explain the types of damage buffs and How they work when you use armor or grab potions or use artifacts or use a chance to enhance your damage you’re applying one of four different types of buffs the first one is a standard physical damage multiplier this buff will multiply your total physical damage by the amount it Says so critical hit will take your total and multiply it by three ellerger’s bane will take your total damage to illagers and increase it by 40 or multiply it by 1.4 times there are many buffs like this then you have what i call indirect damage buffs these apply a separate type Of damage that doesn’t influence your weapon’s base or physical damage at all enchants like this include burning fire trail and electrified on armor for instance as well as fire aspect poison cloud thundering shockwave and swirling on your weapons these damage buffs are completely separate and calculated individually before their damage is then Added to your total afterwards physical damage multipliers have no effect on them often the only factor that will influence them at all aside from the focus and chants that multiply the damage of your lightning fire poison and soul-based attacks are just attack speed buffs then you have total damage multipliers These will multiply not only your physical damage but all damage that you’re dealing as of now the only two effects like this that exist are gong of weakening and void strike enemies affected by either or both of these debuffs will take multiplied damage from not just your physical hits but also from enchants Like shockwave and swirling then finally you have flat physical damage modifiers and this is where people get tripped up so normally a soul site does 613 471 damage in a single hit critical hit should in theory then cause you to instead do 1840 413 damage So far so good now strength potion doubles your physical damage giving soul scythe 1 million 226 942 damage and when combined with crit should go from one million eight hundred and forty thousand four hundred and thirteen damage to about three million six hundred eighty thousand eight hundred twenty six damage rounded for decibels [Applause] so these damage buffs seem to be working like they should so they seem to be multiplicative right well here’s the thing if you combine a flat buff with a multiplier that multiplier is going to multiply the whole thing so they will both seem like they’re multipliers to find out what’s not a Multiplier we need to combine two buffs that are just flat modifiers so they can’t multiply each other how about cowardice and strength potion we’ll use the same soul scythe as a test we already know it does the expected 1 million 226 942 damage with strength potions 100 boost Does cowardice really boost that base damage by 40 if it does we should get and fifty eight thousand eight hundred and fifty nine damage give or take and around two million five hundred and seventy six thousand five hundred seventy eight damage with a crit good so far everything’s working correctly But what if we add a strength potion if we’re doing 858 860 damage with cowardice alone strength potion should be doubling that to about one million seven hundred and seventeen thousand seven hundred and twenty damage or two hundred and eighty percent total damage [Applause] oh my what happened there Four million four hundred sixteen thousand nine hundred ninety three is triple the damage of one million four hundred seventy two thousand thirty 331 but that 1 472 331 damage is wrong why didn’t strength potion double the cowardice damage if we plugged the numbers into a calculator the way that we assumed They’d work we would definitely get about one million seven hundred and seventeen thousand seven hundred and twenty damage likely predicted this is how flat modifiers differ from multipliers unlike a multiplier instead of applying them to the total damage individually you first add up the flat modifiers and then apply them to the Total damage in this case both cowardice and strength potion are flat 40 and 100 damage modifiers so we would first add that 40 and 100 together and then multiply the site space 613 471 damage by the combined 140 percent coming out to about the 1 472 331 damage that we Actually got and this is true of shadow brew and pain cycle as well let’s look at how much damage our scythe gains from just shadow brew alone 4 907 769 damage if you’re not great with math this seems to be an 8 times damage multiplier so if we combine it with Strength potion we should do 16 times the normal 613 471 damage right let’s see does it take a math expert to know that 5 521 240 isn’t 16 times 613 471 but if we multiply it by 9 though that is the number that we get so what’s happening here is that shadow Brew is a plus 700 damage modifier combining with strength potion to give us a total 800 damage increase or nine times the amount of normal damage individually they seem like multipliers but when you combine them they show their true colors you can see this with pain cycle as well The first hit of a sponge striker does 145 699 damage and if we quote unquote quintuple that we get 728 497 two damage above a five times multiplier if combined with a strength potion though will they combine to deal about one million four hundred and fifty six thousand nine hundred ninety four damage Or double that pain cycle hit or is pain cycle not a five times damage multiplier and instead just increases the base damage by 400 percent meaning that the two would combine for a 500 damage increase or six times the damage and just give us about 874 194 damage [Applause] If you guess the ladder then you’re catching on all of these buffs here are not multiplying each other they have no synergy this drastically affects what buffs you choose in which you toss when i dealt my 280 million 202 944 damage to mushroom monstrosity and showed my girlfriend the very same girlfriend that You’ve seen me play some levels with i looked at the damage more closely and saw something was wrong and it led me to constantly calculating and recalculating and recalculating over and over the damage and buffs in front of her to find out what went wrong and my girlfriend sweet and supportive As she is isn’t an expert at this game nor is she fond of numbers but as i was toiling and racking my brain she said to me honey those numbers don’t all multiply like you think and while it was obvious i wasn’t trying that out she was right and so it led me On a long journey of testing not only how much each buff increased my damage by but which ones were flat and which ones weren’t the results were that armor damage buffs like 20 weapon damage boost aura and plus 30 melee damage are flat coward nice and reckless flat strength Potion and shadow brew flat artifact synergy and pain cycle are flat sharpness is also flat but it does multiply itself and of course all of these are multiplied by the actual damage multipliers those being crit committed smiting illager’s beam ambush enigma resonator unchanting void strike and gong of weakening this also means that Not only is reckless 1.8 times killing speed increase not worth you dying two and a half times faster but it actually gets even worse the more flat damage buffs that you add effectively only adding 40 more damage to your total if you have a strength potion active as well So now with all this knowledge we can finally see how my 280 million 202 944 damage hit on mushroom monstrosity actually worked so we have 30 percent more damage from full metal armor forty percent more damage from cowardice eighty percent more damage from reckless a hundred percent more damage from Strength potion four hundred percent more damage from pain cycle and seven hundred percent more damage from shadow group all combining to give us 1 350 more damage to the anchor’s base 2 million 147 149 damage next we have crit triggering and gong of weakening active giving us a 9 times damage multiplier to that total resulting in And there you have it this was something known by few and by none in the discord community it was all thanks to my girlfriend that i figured this out and then shared it with the community where it’s now become common knowledge there but since not everyone is part of that Community making videos about this helped spread that awareness i had spread it to reddit that rhyme wasn’t intentional i swear but for some reason i didn’t think to make a video about it but i have now and now you know thanks for watching and i’ll see you in the next video You Video Information

This video’s quite a bit different from what I usually make. For one thing it involved A LOT of editing. This short 14 and a half minute video took me 14 hours to edit AFTER doing all the work recording the commentary. Though a lot of that is from sciatic spinal pain combined with sitting at a desk and being out of it from Baclofen and Prednisone.
It hasn’t been a fun week for me ๐
Anyway I know this is a lot of info to take in, but I did my best to make it easy to digest and interesting at the same time. I’m also positive that it’s not new info. SOMEONE had to have known this before me. But in the communities I frequented (that being Discord and largely Reddit), this info’s not known, or wasn’t known, and it doesn’t have really any (or much) exposure that I can see elsewhere.
And I did point it out both on Reddit and in the Discord group 4-5 months ago, but it can be easily buried (and others can swoop in to take credit for the info I brought into the light to them in the first place), so I’d say it’s good just in general to make videos about stuff.
Now none of this is to say you can’t use Pain Cycle. There’s better enchants out there, but if not running Cowardice, it’s not too bad. It’s GREAT on a Sponge Striker due to the damage bug with it. And I’ve calc’d what Pain Cycle adds to all weapons optimally (but didn’t state them all out loud, so the person who likes to copy my info only knows those ones have at LEAST the baseline 66.67% flat DPS increase).
To summarize:
Flat physical damage buffs that don’t multiply each other: 20% weapon damage boost aura +30% melee damage +30% ranged damage +50% artifact damage Strength Potion Shadow Brew Cowardice Reckless Artifact Synergy Pain Cycle Overcharge Power
Flat physical damage buff that doesn’t multiply others, but DOES multiply itself: Sharpness
Full physical damage multipliers: Critical Hit Committed Smiting Illager’s Bane Enigma Resonator Ambush Unchanting Supercharge Growing
Indirect damage that doesn’t multiply or get multiplied by physical buffs: Shock Wave Swirling Exploding Dynamo Fuse Shot Thorns Blast Fungus Power Shaker Scatter Mines Spinblade Eye of the Guardian Updraft Tome Ice Wand
Indirect damage that doesn’t multiply or get multiplied by physical buffs, but IS multiplied by elemental buffs: Poison Cloud Fire Aspect Thundering Shock Web Dipping Poison Burning Fire Trail Electrified Corrupted Seeds Satchel of Elements Torment Quiver Flaming Quiver Thundering Quiver Corrupted Beacon / Corrupted Pumpkin Harvester Lightning Rod
Indirect damage multipliers that multiply their respective damage: Fire Focus Lightning Focus Poison Focus Soul Focus
FULL damage multipliers that multiply ALL damage a mob takes: Gong of Weakening Voidstrike
One special case is the jungle poison from Vine Whip and Encrusted Anchor, which is affected both by physical damage modifiers/multipliers (aside from Crit, Enigma Resonator, and Committed) AND by Poison Focus.
Also Fireworks Arrow DOES get boosted by any ranged damage buffs.
All in all, you really just wanna shy away from Artifact Synergy. Even on an Encrusted Anchor… it doesn’t add much.
And stay the HELL away from Reckless on ANY build. It’s not worth it. Ever.
Music used is Five Armies, Hitman, Movement Proposition, Ryno’s Theme, Truth of the Legend, and Scheming Weasel – all by Kevin MacLeod because he’s a legend.
