Momento Mori look behind remember Thou Art mortal Remember You Must Die has Minecraft forgotten how to die Minecraft has existed for over a decade and it has been updated countless times features have been released re-released and then replaced all together this cubic ship of feus is understandably intimidating to players Returning after a long Hiatus their memories of the game they left behind in congruent with what they now find themselves in like returning home after a journey only to find all your belongings moved an inch to the left this unsettling and uncanny feeling is deeply rooted to Minecraft’s Childhood importance to so many of us born in the late ’90s and early 2000s a bitter Nostalgia tied to this game like no other this may be why the changes to the game feel so personal so upsetting and controversial because they upset the very things we associate with our Childhood but it’s not just the game that’s changed it’s alive it’s alive it’s alive it’s alive it’s alive what does it mean to be alive humans have spent it eternity trying to answer this question a biologist may say that it is to respire to produce waste to sense the environment and to Grow a theist may say that it is to have a soul to have the free will to change and to make choices and a poet may say it is to love and to be loved to be loved is to be changed and Minecraft has been loved far more than any other Game what they have most in common is growth and change it is undeniable that Minecraft has changed but so have you we are not the same kids that stayed up late on summer holidays building cities with our friends fighting for our lives in M shafts Panic closing the game after A creeper his and we never will be Again Minecraft is not the same sandbox it once was whilst we were growing up so too was the game we once loved the baron void became a twisting alien Forest Dark Caverns became glittering aases and forgotten cities a burning hellscape became an ecosystem of its own for those of us who stayed these Changes came naturally a gradual Evolution features added one by one but for those who left they returned to something uncomfortably far from familiarity their hope home with all their belongings moved an inch to the left like meeting an old school friend after years have gone by time has Stripped Away all you had in common you find nothing to say to them so you move on with your lives you put the game down only to repeat the ritual on your next awkward meeting we sat down and for some moments while he spoke not I gazed upon him with a Feeling half of pity half of awe surely man had never been so terribly altered in so brief a period as had rodri Usher it was with difficulty that I could bring myself to admit the identity of the onean being before me with the companions of my early Boyhood yet all Things that live must remember to Die we may be alive but what does it mean to live the purpose of living is one not so easily found many turn to Faith in higher Powers whilst others carve their own meaning from a cold uncaring world yet Minecraft has the luxury of caring not for purpose for we decide our Own path within it such is a true sandbox as a semi-professional builder map designer writer and game developer Minecraft has captivated me for over a decade I found purpose in a game that inherently lacks one I carved my own civilizations and stories from mountains when my own life felt less than a Hill my purpose became creation Minecraft was simply a canvas Minecraft evolved but so did its Community mods data packs custom worlds all came together to create something bigger than the sum of its parts a community bigger than a single development Studio a hive mind of creation each player brings Their Own Story be it the dragon slaying quest of a mortal stranger starting their days hiding in a hole in the Earth or an immortal God erecting cities and empires in their image millions of lifetimes exist Within These saves and servers an infinite Library stored across the globe to wonder these worlds would take Eternity Minecraft is beyond mortal comprehension it is Immortal in its own right in this form it can never die in the way we do yet there is something more powerful still I am aie mandus King of Kings look upon my Works ye Mighty and Despair Minecraft for all its Evolution for all its Community for all its Immortal spread is still a piece of software this software has a developer a legal rights holder and a corporate incentive Mojang and by extension Microsoft own the rights to the game and therefore steer its course this has Become more apparent than ever in recent years for both good and bad reasons the good is often overlooked Minecraft is accessible easily downloaded and played well known and marketed the annual mob votes for all their controversy and often dis appointments are a way for the community to engage with the game’s development The majority of players don’t mod the game most stick to the vanilla features of the latest game version these votes let the average player choose their own experience and help the game stay relevant in the public eye they are a Lifeline for a decades old game in a fast-paced Market yet this is just the tip of the iceberg of Mojang’s influence The past year has marked a steep decline in players Trust of Mojang and Microsoft and growing fears for the game’s future most are aware of the chat report features marking an increase in control over players individual experience a way of making the game kid-friendly despite The Aging of the kids who fell in love with it so long ago it seems like a way of pushing away the veteran players who are enamored with the gamees freedom however changes such as these are not unprecedented and serve a valid purpose of protecting our younger players although I feel this overlooks The kind of media that children consume I may be a semi-professional Minecraft builder but I also have a full-time job by day I am a teaching assistant in a secondary school my interactions with children even as young as 11 show me that swear words and Anarchy servers are the least of our Worries as caregivers and adults in children’s lives we have a responsibility to protect and guide them and it can be argued that this extends to companies like Mojang who provide entertainment but not a single disturbing graphic or worrisome thing that a child has told me has stemmed From an experience in Minecraft in fact very few of the troubled students I work with even play Minecraft at all there are things in this world that are not fit for children but they will seek them out regardless morbid curiosity cannot be stopped and even if Minecraft becomes Sterile and safe they will still find something disturbing elsewhere I appreciate Mojang’s efforts to provide a safe place for our most vulnerable but all they will succeed in doing is driving away their older players I am of course talking about more than just chat reporting as a Strong case can be made for its usefulness I myself have been in situations where I’d wished this was a feature instead relying on screenshots to put together a police report in cases of extreme cyber bullying but even that was futile no what scares me the most is Mojang’s control over content made using Minecraft as a canvas as previously said I see myself as a Creator a writer and a game developer using using Minecraft as my Medium as is my way my writing touches on dark and realistic themes War religion death and Corruption recently Mojang has proposed changes to their acceptable use policy In regards to content made with the game Mojang has stated all permissions and consent are given by us at our discretion and may be revoked at any time if we don’t like what doing which as a Creator is a terrifying thing to hear to know that everything You’ve created may be taken away denied an audience because a corporate executive at Microsoft feels that it would impact the game’s child-friendly brand so what things do they not like along with monetization of in-game events and the structure of video titles Mojang objects to adult themes such as G guns and Gambling this is concerningly vague and has worrying implications one can understand trying to remove example Recreations of school shootings on 9/11 of which there are many but what about fictional works that wish to tell engaging stories that touch on these themes for valid reasons what if you wanted to tell the Story of a revolution using a gun mod pack in a fictional city to describe the over of a dystopian regime what if you wanted to tell the story of a prince in a fantasy Kingdom who fors to demonic Temptations and slays his father to gain The crown what if you wanted to create a Sci-Fi World controlled by AI with your players rising up to fight for their freedom against swarms of gun toting robots all these ideas are not the same as perversions of the game to recreate harrowing real world events yet the new Content guidelines May restrict them all all at Mojang’s discretion in one of my free maps King’s Coast there is a storyline of children being abducted from a medieval Kingdom and taken to an underground laboratory by a nefarious organization this story is told through books and signs but is it too adult even In this form what if I were to add NPCs and voice acting to tell this tale would it be too far then we won’t know until it’s too Late nothing besides remains around the decay of that colossal wreck boundless and bare the lone and level sand stretch far away without the creative freedom of Storytelling in Minecraft we lose one of the game’s greatest strengths it ceases to be a Sandbox and instead becomes a scripted Journey like many other games If I wanted a fantasy tale about resource Gathering and slaying dragons I would play something like Skyrim games like this have their own merits and are incredibly enjoyable but I couldn’t play them for 10 years straight without getting bored in the way I have Minecraft this level of control will Undoubtedly kill Minecraft as we know it yet creativity itself is not so easily stunted Minecraft is infinite not because it is procedurally generated but because millions of mins are Unchained in what they can create the cosmic library of save files will not cease to exist it is Immortal not because it is Software but because it captures the very Spirit of human creativity when Games die when they’re no longer for sale no longer supported by launchers or server hosts they don’t cease to exist the graveyard of old games is far from quiet abandonware is a way of emulating old games games that have lost their Developers and their support classic titles like Silent Hill fall under this title able to be played only by those willing to breathe life into their scattered raw files software never truly dies it just waits to be remembered it is important to say that I do not condone the use of cracked Clients all the while Minecraft is available to buy and pirated versions of the game will never be able to participate in any of the events I co-run but if Minecraft as we know it does die I am certain it will fall into the abandon wear category this game about breaking and placing blocks Will always exist and so too will creativity it does not matter in the end what Mojang does or doesn’t do Minecraft may have been created by them but it was made by us it is a living breathing entity a hive mind of creation and passion based all over the world it Lives but it will never die not truly it may have been made as a kids game but we are the kids who grew up Minecraft is all of us to be loved is to be changed and Minecraft has loved us well so has Minecraft forgotten how to Die or has it simply learned to live Thank you for watching this far if you have any thoughts you’d like to share feel free to use the comments below this video was very different from my usual content so Title: Death, Immortality and Modern Minecraft This video essay is about how Minecraft has changed, and how recent changes to Mojang policy may affect the games future.
