Hey everybody, my name is soafen minecraft bedrock, then it’s got things we don’t like, like the microtransaction-filled marketplace, but it’s also got cool things like the excellent performance and cross-compatibility. you can play across android, ios, windows 10, nintendo switch, ps4, ps5, xbox one, Xbox series, but what about linux i hear you say! well today, i’m going to be showcasing a method of playing minecraft bedrock edition on linux using a little tool called minecraft bedrock launcher. some prerequesites include requiring a 64-bit based linux install, and you need to own Minecraft on android on a google play account to do this. so minecraft bedrock launcher is essentially a launcher that lets you play your android copy of minecraft bedrock, and everything works, from keyboard and mouse controls to playing online. you can install Minecraft bedrock launcher on any distro that supports appimages or flatpaks. now flatpaks are sort of a package distribution platform that works on many many modern linux distros like here. and appimages are just sort of a single package that has all the dependencies built-in, but Doesn’t quite integrate too well with things like the launcher but you can have a desktop shortcut and whatnot. in today’s example i’m using ubuntu so let’s stick to the flatpak. so as you can see on flatpak.org it’s telling us how to install flatpak on ubuntu. let’s open up a terminal, And run sudo apt install flatpak. and put in our password, and now we’re installing flatpak. so it is a little not nice installing another package distribution platform but it is what it is. now we’re going to add the flathub repository, and finally we need to reboot the system. So for all these videos on my channel that will require linux, i’m going to use different distros just to showcase different distributions of linux and how they’re not scary, and here we are on ubuntu 21.04. alright, finally, let’s get installing mc bedrock launcher, so sudo flatpak install from the flathub, io.mrarm.mcpelauncher, And put in our password… great looks like we’ve found it, let’s go ahead and hit yes on that, now okay it looks like it wants to install some components of kde which is quite big in storage requirements. so instead of doing that, i’m going to back out and opt for The AppImage. so let’s click here on the guide, and i’ll leave this link in the description. and let’s go for the latest one here, for x86_64bit. now appimages are really simple. think of them as portable programs but you don’t even have to extract them like you do on windows. So here we are in the downloads folder, right? i’m going to cut this, and we’re going to go up one level to my home directory, let’s make an appimages folder, and i’m going to paste it in here, and just rename it to minecraft bedrock launcher! and Then to actually make it executable we right-click here, hit properties, and ‘allow executing file as program’, but depending on different linux distros and different file managers, it may or may not be there, so a more universal way of doing it is just going here into the terminal, Going into the appimages folder and sudo chmod +x ./Minecraft. so we’re literally granting this permission to be executable and that should be it, we can just double-click on it here and it should run, now it doesn’t exactly like the scaling here so i’m going to make it bigger. Alright and it says welcome to the new minecraft linux launcher update and we’ll hit continue, sign in with google, again it looks a little messed up because of the scaling but don’t worry about it. okay, i am logged in now, and we’ll agree to the google play scary terms of service That i don’t really want to talk about. and we’ll click download here. so by default it should download the latest version of the game, which is at time of recording, i believe, 1.7.10. and just like that, we are running minecraft bedrock. it is pretty amazing how simple this Program is. and we can maximise it and log in here, and let’s just do a new sample world, creative, online play is not rated, even though we’re playing singleplayer, and there we- oh! and there we are, it’s running perfectly fine although mouse input is not working because this is a virtual machine, And i’m using vmware player which doesn’t let you change the mouse input to relative mouse input, so yeah. but this is essentially the android version of the game, meaning it has the android limitations. like the gui is really big by default, The blocks highlight when you hover over them instead of outlining, there’s no music, but these are all things that can be fixed. like, let’s say, go into the pause menu here, go into settings, so let’s make the gui smaller by going into video here, And gui scale modifier down here. and turn it down to negative 3. ui profile, classic, that affects things like the crafting ui and whatnot, fov we’ll bump that up to 90 and we’ll go to outline selection, and in fact i’m pretty sure in here There is a full keyboard gameplay option so even though i’m in a virtual machine here, i don’t actually need to worry because there are look controls. and there we go i’m playing with keyboard only. no mouse, because this is a virtual machine. it’s pretty cool that minecraft Has all these accessibility options, though i do wish java edition had controller support. okay, now that we’re logged in, i’m just going to prove that the online works real quick, so let’s jump into mineplex, i don’t know who plays these servers but in actuality what you Would use this for is playing with your bedrock friends, like- oh i forgot i can’t use the mouse but yeah what you could genuinely use this for is playing with your switch friends, or ps4, you know, your console friends, your phone friends from the comfort of linux! which i think Is really neat. now, the technicalities are this is not like a vm, this is not anything like wine, this is essentially just the 64-bit copy of the android version of the game, running on linux thanks to this launcher that, from my understanding, it either brings back Some libraries or it, does some translations… it does something that it needs to do to get this game running on linux and it’s very small overhead, which is pretty sweet! now to enter fullscreen, i bet you can do alt f11, yes you can! on most window managers or desktop Environments, you can just press alt+f11 to go fullscreen, but it does seem to be lagging out here, remember this is a vm so… i’ve never had that happen on actual hardware but there you go! you can play minecraft bedrock on linux without compromise! Which i think is astounding, as long as you have the android version of the game, which honestly, it’s not even that expensive compared to the desktop ones, compared to like the windows 10 one. Like if we go to minecraft here on the google play store, exactly it’s 7 euro, 49, that ain’t a lot! but there we go, that is minecraft bedrock running on linux, pretty cool, pretty neat. but there we are, that is how to play minecraft bedrock edition on linux. if this tutorial helped You out please feel free to hit like, if you ran into any issues, leave comments below, i’ll try and help you, and if you’d like to see more from me, please do consider pressing subscribe! alright, that’s it, thanks for watching everybody!
