Minecraft is a truly iconic game I cannot tell you how many hours of my life have been poured into that game and I will not take back a single one but as I have taken a step back from playing the game I have gained A New Perspective On this game and as i gaze upon the gaming landscape as a whole I can see the sphere of influence this once tiny passion project has created and I can tell you that it is terrible the once Innovative and Unique Mechanics of Minecraft have now become a poison for The game industry as a whole with games spitting out arbitrary crafting mechanics left and right for no damn good reason not to mention the Unholy demon that is live service games or just saying it makes me cringe now I’m not trying to dump on Minecraft at all it has undeniably revolutionized the Gaming landscape inspiring countless titles and empowering a whole new generation of Gamers and that is a freaking awesome thing but what I am saying is that these once revolutionary elements have been misused by the greedy corporations that fuel these AAA developers and ultimately led to a net negative impact on the Gaming Community Let me explain crafting is Minecraft and Minecraft is crafting I mean it’s in the damn title you mind and you craft simple yet effective this crafting system allowed players to explore their creativity and provide a sense of accomplishment especially after having spent hours upon hours combing through caves risking your Life and most importantly inventory just trying to look for a specific resource then to get back to your base only to find that you have forgotten another stupid resource and have to delve back in but crafting resources and items from scratch offers a deep sense of ownership And player agency I mean you need not look any further than Minecraft youtubers to see the extent of just how creative one can get you can make a simple dirt hot or giant gold weighing if you so desire see Minecraft was built on this mechanic while many other games Weren’t this is where the greedy corporations step in they saw this as an opportunity to exploit players desire for customization and of course without thinking they just took it and forced into games where it didn’t necessarily make sense there were even games that had over many years developed their own Identity but when crafting was introduced it took their identity and straight up throw it out the window crafting crafting for everyone you can make your own Island the only cost is that your villagers are now yes men who never move or say anything negative about their Overlord unless they incur their Wrath And that’s not the worst of it have we talked about microtransactions because these cartoonishly greedy corporations love money they saw how implementing a crafting system can be an opportunity to hold back critical features behind a freaking paywall many titles now feature some sort of convoluted crafting system intentionally designed to push players towards Microtransactions this sense of empowerment that drove Minecraft to be the monolithic hit it is today has now been overshadowed by greedy monetization strategies that hinder player progressions and just straight up encourage pay to win mechanics which is straight I do believe that crafting can be implemented well into Games it just needs to make sense like everything else and it really shouldn’t deter from the overall gaming experience I mean raise your hand if you think going into a cave and grinding for hours upon hours trying to find a certain resource is fun I thought so not To mention if your game focuses on fast-paced Shoot Em Up action you don’t want to be hindered by having to stop every so often just to craft something no you want to shoot fools and while we’re on the topic of slowing the pace of a game to a baby’s crawl there there Are two words that piss me off more than any when it comes to gaming open freaking worlds wait that’s technically three but whatever Minecraft’s open world actually makes sense as the game is designed to be your oyster players were granted the freedom to explore vast Landscapes encouraging Discovery and even fostering a sense of adventure the Limitless potential for building Mining and interacting with the environment became a Hallmark of the game now of course there’s a fine line between open worlds being awesome and encouraging adventure and it just being a slog to Trek through the world because You need to get to point B but point B is all the way over there and you’re all the way over here your moment-to-moment gameplay is sacrificed on the altar of hey open world it’s all become a quantity over quality type of thing and with the popularity of open World Games skyrocketing developers Rushed to incorporate expansive maps and endless site activities however this often led to an abundance of empty repetitive content sacrificed in depth and meaningful experiences it quite often leads to the hey you I need you to fetch random for no apparent reason thing popping up all the damn Time and it’s all just stupid fetch quests designed to pad out a 20-hour game to a 200 hour game and the problem is is it’s so damn common because there are so many open world games you guys understand why I hate open world games because of this over Saturation open world games now suffer from vast Barren Landscapes devoid of engaging gameplay diluting the magic of exploration and this is all because these developers are rushed to put out these games in order to meet a deadline which leads me beautifully into my next topic of live service updates Minecraft’s continuous updates actually Makes sense I mean the game is already a beefy game but these continuous updates just take an already complete experience and builds upon it vanilla Minecraft too boring how about we update the rather useless nether to make it a more fleshed out Place caves too much of a drag how About we improve them all while bringing in the freshest video game music composer to make tunes that are certified bangers did I mention that they are all free what I’m getting at is it’s delivering fresh content and improvements to ensure players engagement for the game’s lifespan this live service approach Fostered a Vibrant Community and maintained relevance for many years until regrettably other developers misused the live service model releasing incomplete Mario Strikers battle League or broken games pretty much any EA game under the guise of ongoing updates by relying on post-launch fixes the game experience suffered quite considerably with players Serving as beta testers so pretty much cyberpunk 2077. it’s moreover aggressive monetization practices and excessive DLCs often erode trust and left players feeling shortchanged before I go I’ll give these AAA developers one piece of free advice we want complete games Minecraft is a wonderful game it was Built around the crafting and open world mechanics so these features are fully realized sure the live service update model didn’t come till later but its implementation only improved to the overall experience by adding more to an already jam-packed game and while all these systems were once hailed as Innovative and player-centric their Implementation in other games had yielded a net negative impact on the Gaming Community the empowering crafting system transformed into a monetization trap exploiting players desire for customizations and creating what they call whales is very sickening open worlds became bloated with empty content overshadowing the thrill of sheer exploration live service updates Intended for constant Evolution were used as a mask for incomplete games and exploitative monetization what I’m getting at here is mojanggood other AAA developers bad for the most part sure there are developers who actually took a step back and saw what made these systems good and properly implemented Them but these passionate developers are becoming a rare breed unfortunately that is why my focus has now turned to what independent devs are doing as these guys and gals and non-binary folks are genuinely passionate about the games they make and that brings me beautifully back to Minecraft it started as an Independent game with Notch and his friends just wanting to make an awesome crafting survival simulator and despite the fact that Microsoft owns it now the devs at Mojang Studios understand what makes the game great and they haven’t strayed away from that formula they are The Rare Breed and that is why Minecraft Stays relevant even to this day and if you guys liked what you heard please hit like And subscribe and I want to hear your thoughts on this whole situation what do you guys think of Minecraft’s contribution to Minecraft is a cultural icon. It pioneered so many unique gaming mechanics because of the freedom of creative expression it allows you. But… these once heralded mechanics have been corrupted by greedy developers who want to exploit them for their own selfish monetary gain.
In this video, I break down why the wonderful new game mechanics introduced by Minecraft have been an overall net negative to the gaming landscape… And perhaps why they shouldn’t have even been introduced in the first place.
