Foreign from the horror genre while I personally have never really seen Gmod as a horror game myself and it’d honestly be my last choice if I needed to tell a scary story there’s no design that the game has for a very long time but a Priceless resource for amateur creators online to Try their hand at horror given the game’s use of gritty Half-Life 2 assets the eeriness of loading up empty Source maps and the countless number of young children playing the game it’s no surprise that people often look at the playful sandbox that is Gmod through a darker more Sinister lens and honestly It’s been that way for quite a while as much as the rise of Gmod horror might seem like a pretty novel concept the truth is the people have been finding ways to make Gary’s mods scary pretty much ever since the game came out you’d be forgiven for thinking that Gmod Horror only consists of shadow people and the back rooms given how insanely popular the genre has become in the last few years pretty much every aspect of it that doesn’t involve liminal spaces or args has been tossed to the Wayside to focus on the new stuff but the truth is There’s a rich history of Gmod horror that not many people seem to even know about a history that is not only interesting but in some ways is partly responsible for the continued success of the game even into the year 2023. today we’re going to explore the history of The genre as well as some of the lesser-known origins of Gary’s Mod horror to find out if they’re good if they’re worth thinking about and how they even get us to where we are today The story of Gmod horror begins unsurprisingly at the start of Gmod itself more specifically Gary’s mod 9 one of the oldest and most important versions of Gary’s Mod to ever exist while obviously there were eight versions of Garry’s Mod that came before it Gmod 9 is one of the most important Updates in the game’s history and also the point where it really started to take off in popularity by all accounts the release of Gmod 9 was the moment that Gary’s Mod stopped being just a Sandbox mod for Half-Life 2 and started to be its own platform with its own Distinct game modes 17 game modes personally created by the Gary’s Mod team are available to play with every fresh install of Gmod 9. some of them are pretty cool some that were kind of lame but none of them are quite as important as this one in particular Graveyard on the surface graveyard is a pretty generic Gmod experience it’s a zombie infection type game mode set in a very small graveyard themed horror map the map is pretty amateur there’s tons of fog everywhere and the setting is admittedly kind of bland there’s two teams survivors and zombies and it plays A lot like the infection game mode from Halo but the interesting part about graveyard isn’t the actual map or even the game mode that it’s packaged with what’s interesting about it is that as far as I can tell it’s one of the first documented attempts at doing Horror in The game’s history there were definitely horror maps made specifically for Half-Life 2 that made their way into Gary’s Mod but graveyard from what I’ve seen is the first ever horror map that Gmod was able to call its very own well it’s definitely more of a playful kind Of horror and I don’t think anyone was genuinely getting frightened by graveyard in 2006 it’s kind of cool to see what is basically the Catalyst for everything horror related that came after it it’s honestly kind of interesting to see just how much things change over the years but also how much They stay exactly the same for example the zombie model that graveyard uses is the same Corps of one player model that pretty much every Gmod horror map or mod uses to this day years might pass and things might change but will always remain a constant is that this guy’s Face is scary as hell Nightmare House is another very early Gmod horror map that’s almost as old as the game itself while it’s technically a single player campaign made for Half-Life 2. it only really built any sort of following thanks to how popular it was among Gmod players it’s a linear Horror story where the player is forced to Traverse to a haunted house there’s tons of zombies to kill traps to avoid and some lame ass puzzles to solve along the way it’s honestly still pretty scary and while the gameplay isn’t the most riveting I think it’s worth playing Through just for the historical value alone Nightmare House differs pretty heavily from graveyard because it’s not really just a Gmod map it’s essentially an entire indie horror game disguised as a series of g-mod maps it might seem pretty generic now and not really worth giving the time of day but it’s Important to remember the Nightmare House released in 2006 at a time we’re making an entire indie horror game even as one as short as this one was far from Easy Nightmare House was one of the most popular custom maps in Gary’s mod and it stuck around for quite a while even by 2008 the phrase Gmod horror was synonymous with Nightmare House I think if you were to ask most people at the time with the scariest thing you could do in Gmod was most if not all of them would point to this map Nightmare House is undeniably gmod’s first ever Successful horror experience and it was pretty much undefeated as the champion of Gmod horror for years when the Standalone sequel Nightmare House 2 released in 2010 it got mainstream attention with people like PewDiePie Cinemas and markipliers all making videos on it which was a lot of people’s Very first exposure to the source engine and the Gary’s mod ever it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that gmod’s first real public exposure outside of the source Community was thanks to Nightmare House and the horror content that it inspired I don’t think Gary’s Mod owes all of its popularity to nightmare house but it’s interesting to think where it would even be without that first huge success either way the classic era of Gmod horror was pretty much defined by Maps like Nightmare House and other maps that came after it Gmod was thriving the horror Community Within Gmod was thriving and a steady influx of players were joining Gary’s Mod to not only play the maps but also to try their hand at making their own horror experience it was honestly a good time to be in the Garry’s Mod horror and the 2010 looked very promising for what The genre was going to bring next so everything was going good for Gmod horror the genre is new it was fresh and it was gaining unprecedented popularity a countless number of people were being introduced to Gary’s Mod via YouTube creators and it seemed like the content being created in that space only get Better and better the best part was it was a mostly mutually beneficial relationship YouTubers get millions of views on their videos on and related to Gary’s Mod horror and Gmod got thousands and thousands of new players thanks to that exposure but something happened in August 2014 that would not only change Gary’s Mod forever but also the entirety of the horror game genre as a whole Five Nights at Freddy’s is an extremely polarizing game a lot of people love it to death and a lot of people hate it to death no matter what your opinion is on it though there’s no denying that it’s Influence and impact is massive perhaps no Community online felt that massive impact more than the Gary’s Mod horror Community the release in subsequent popularity of Five Nights at Freddy’s came with a small problem there really wasn’t any content for it outside of the games so for fans who wanted to make Custom content and machinimas with Five Nights at Freddy’s assets there really wasn’t anywhere to go and that’s where Garry’s Mod came in seemingly overnight Gmod became the central hub for Five Nights at Freddy’s fans the Gmod Workshop became flooded with FNAF content and it became impossible to avoid the Huge Horror phenomenon while This undoubtedly brought one of the largest influx of players to Gmod probably in history it also essentially ate the Gmod horror Community there wasn’t really a large market for vanilla Gmod horror anymore and most players wanted it to somehow involve Five Nights at Freddy’s in some way Gmod horror Content also at this point started to focus Less on making original horror maps and experiences and more on just replicating the Five Nights at Freddy’s experience inside of Gary’s Mod because of finesse’s popularity with a young audience it also acted as a sort of Trojan Horse bringing in more and more Child-oriented horror tropes until the original Gmod horror player base that had been established all the way back in 2006 was completely gone and while there are definitely efforts to revive Gmod horror from 2014 onward essentially none of them were able to break through the massive influence that FNAF had on the Game while Gary’s Mod hosted Five Nights at Freddy’s content within years of its arrival to the platform it had already overshadowed g-modded elephant in the process crushed any and all non-finap related attempts and making horror games the FNAF era of Gmod horror was polarizing it undeniably brought in an Unprecedented number of creators and players into the game but also left a lot of people sick of Gmod horror as a whole earning for something entirely different for a lot of people Gmod horror as a genre was now irreversibly tainted and for better for worse thanks to Five Nights at Freddy’s it was over for nearly Seven Years Five Nights at Freddy’s had a Stranglehold on Gary’s mod horror while it wasn’t present in every horror related map and mod made for the game it had undeniably steered the direction of Gmod horror more into the realm of content made for children If you wanted anyone at all to play your Gmod horror map or download your horror NPC it would have been a wise decision to make it appealing to a young audience and for the most part that’s just how things were from 2014 to 2019 Gmod horror was a space inhabited by and with Content created for children that was the long and short of it there really wasn’t room for any sort of adult horror content and even if you had made it the chances that anybody would give it the time of day were pretty low but somewhere around the start of 2019 a new Type of horror started to take the Internet by storm liminal I probably don’t have to explain liminal Horror in the back rooms to you but just as a refresher it’s a genre of war that focuses Less on scary monsters and serial killers and more on feelings of isolation loneliness and Nostalgia it began with users sharing pictures of real life places that evoke the feeling of unsettling Nostalgia and slowly transformed into something greater they moved on from real life locations and started the toy with the idea of digital liminal spaces places and Maps inside of video games that had Some sort of paranormal Aura to them and of course no game is a better candidate for having unsettling ethereal Maps than Gary’s Mod is discussions surrounding the creepy feeling that Gary’s modded Source engine Maps had started to increase as discussion around liminal spaces in the back room started to get More mainstream attention on the internet so did discussion around Gary’s Mod’s unsettling and creepy Vibe it was pretty much impossible to be someone who was into liberal horror who wasn’t constantly seeing discussion about Garry’s Mod that slowly started to materialize in Gary’s Mod itself with people beginning to upload their own Liminal horror maps account number of backroom inspired places abandoned buildings and maps with a generally unsetting atmosphere became pretty popular people started to look at old video game maps differently and started making up urban legends and horror stories about them most notably RP downtown which many claimed was haunted By the digital ghost at the Creator who had killed themselves years prior and while it wasn’t outright frightening horror it was one of the most popular and largest horror movements at the Garry’s Mod Community had seen since the invasion of Five Nights at Freddy’s but there was still something left to be Desired the Newfound popularity of the Gmod and assortion was getting thanks to the liminal space craze was good but it wasn’t really a true horror movement and it wasn’t really exclusive to Gary’s Mod that’s when around the start of early 2020 a brand new more meta genre of Gmod Horror began to take off in popularity Gmod args Gmod args are alternate reality games which is just a fancy way of saying that they’re basically online performance art kind of has roots in the analog horror movement of the past few years but instead of nostalgia for the VHS era it’s Nostalgia for the late 2000s early YouTube and early Gmod the gist of this content was basically that there were YouTube channels with decade old archives of Gary’s Mod gameplay but with a weird paranormal twist in each one either a figure haunting the uploader around every corner or the ragdolls that the Creator was playing with being Sentient human beings they were kind of interesting at first honestly and genuinely kind of scary they felt like a weird forbidden Archives of footage that no one was ever supposed to see and most of the creators at the time actually did a good job of keeping up the character Staying period accurate to the late 2000s and in general creating a feeling of suspense with every new upload it wasn’t long until people caught on and thanks to the coverage of various Gmod YouTube channels the first real Gmod horror community in basically a decade had been formed the main difference Being that they weren’t scared of any terrifying monster or entity they were scared of an old version of Gary’s Mod ARG creators like Gunslinger Pro 2009 and classic GM videos skyrocketed into popularity and for a while the only thing the Gary’s Market Community could even talk about was Cynthia ragdoll’s The shadow man and the helpless feeling of nostalgia that Gary’s mod maps brought them nothing was off limits and basically every part of Gary’s Mod even the more mundane ones got torn apart and recontextualized into being part of a horror story in a way it was honestly Kind of poetic what is probably going to be the last ever big Gmod horror craze args is kind of in a way based off the very first appearance of Gmod horror there’s definitely polarizing opinions on how args affected the Gmod space but the truth is they brought a lot of new Players into Gary’s mod and kept the game relevant in the mainstream and honestly there was some pretty unique stuff made when it was all said and done so that brings us to where we are now Gmod args are kind of over the liminal space trend has died down and all that Really remains of Gmod horror is next spots which I’m not even going to dignify with a section in this video as it stands right now with nothing really going on in the Gmod horror space I guess the only question left to answer is has Gmod horror peaked is it over Probably maybe there aren’t any good horror stories left in the tank when it comes to Gary’s mod and maybe when it was all said and done the space became oversaturated boring and played out due to the immense popularity of it all but honestly the fact that so many people Were able to turn a silly sandbox game about making the G-Man poop into a Mainstay of Internet horror culture for nearly two decades is impressive enough in its own right while the state of Gmod horror and horror games in general might be a rough one I I don’t think that Makes what Gary’s mods Community was able to accomplish any less impressive it’s honestly genuinely hard to find an online horror phenomenon that doesn’t have at least one small link to Gary’s Mod it’s kind of a testament to how the tools at your disposal are the least important part of making cool stuff I Kind of doubt that when Gary put Gmod out all those years ago that he knew that it’d be used to create some of the most popular horror content on the entire internet and that it remained relevant in that space for an absurd amount of time I truly don’t know what’s Next for Gmod horror maybe this video will age gracefully and there really won’t be any more cool stuff to come from that side of the community ever again but maybe just maybe it’ll age poorly and the coolest stuff is yet to come and I’m going to look very stupid In six months either way one thing is certain Obama next spot back room Mario chungus liminal scary I’ve been rat lobber
