Minecraft is a game with lots of bugs and glitches no not those ones these ones with an entire website dedicated to reporting in-game bugs in thorough detail and where players can list versions replicate them and provide evidence the game has had some pretty strange game breaking or outright weird Bugs over the years what’s most interesting though are the bugs which were never fixed the bugs that were found and reported noticed by mojang but never patched but rather confirmed to be actual features of the game some of these bugs have become so synonymous with the game now that it would be Entirely different without them today we talk about eight minecraft bugs which became features so let’s begin but before we do check that you don’t have a horrible youtube bug where the subscribe button is red don’t worry though it can be easily patched by left clicking it no pressure of course The first bug which became a feature is likely the most impactful of them all people often forget that the creeper initially was an accident now now before you say that the creeper wasn’t a bug yada yada it is actually confirmed to be a bug officially and most people don’t Actually know the story behind it as notch officially stated he didn’t have any modelling programs when he made various early minecraft models just writing them in code instead when he was trying to create the pig he accidentally made the model tall instead of long messing up the coordinates instead of The pig having a model which was mostly horizontal the amalgamation he created had a body which was much taller than it should be with four tiny feet basically mixing up the model’s length and height nevertheless notch would decide to keep the alien looking mob eventually giving It a texture and giving it its unique exploding ability and just like that the face of minecraft was born if i told you that for a couple versions of early minecraft beta the squid could fly and be milked you would probably be seriously questioning my sanity but no Everything i just said is 100 true when the squid was first added to the game by jeb he copied the cow’s model and code and fiddled with it supposedly he forgot to remove some elements of the cow’s code so when squids were added to the game in minecraft beta 1.2 they could be Right-clicked with an empty bucket and could be milked just like a cow strange i know this bug became a feature of the game for a brief few months until jeb decided to remove it however another squid related glitch which was intentional that is still in the game today is the Squid’s ability to fly oh my god there’s flying squids why aren’t you talking crap that’s right in minecraft beta 1.2 and further versions squids could literally fly or seemingly float up higher and higher into the sky this bug could only happen on servers though so why was that well According to jeb the squid is moved by velocity vector and if my old math knowledge is correct oh so many bad memories that basically just determines the speed of the squid and its direction the squid was meant to grind to a halt once it hit the surface of the water but That only happened serve aside on the client side the velocity of the squid wouldn’t update so the squid would seemingly ascend through the water and graciously enter the atmosphere while the developers are aware of this issue it was seemingly never patched and you can still find videos to this day of Plays documenting this strange occurrence One such mechanic which arguably is the most impactful minecraft bug turned feature is what the community coined quasi connectivity which basically means indirect power a bug report was made in october of 2012 discussing how droppers dispensers and pistons activate when blocks provided power diagonally or two blocks above them however the bug wasn’t Resolved but rather was stated to be working as intended you know the old saying it’s not a bug it’s a feature basically in minecraft when you flip the switch or lever it would check to see if any nearby components needed to be activated within a limited area around It two blocks away from the source according to jeb sometimes a piston may just be out of range to be updated even if the block above it received the redstone signal so the piston should be activated but it hasn’t been updated to know that yet thus when you update the Block through various methods it activates or deactivates the piston this allowed for the creation of buds or block update detectors which eventually were introduced into the game as an actual block the observer so from bug to an actual block in the game that’s the short story of quasi connectivity If you’ve played minecraft for a while you would know that one of the most satisfying things you can do in the game is update some naturally generated floating sand or gravel and watch it fall if you’re more on the chaotic side like myself you may have tried to use That fact to get your friends killed in the past when a rare opportunity came to be and then swiftly receive karma later on as an enderman update some sand by picking up a block leading to a terrifying scene of events this sequence of events happened on the same world in The same week by the way it has never happened to me again anyway did you know that naturally generated floating sand and gravel is actually a bug the developers have been aware of for the longest time now as stated by minecraft developer tomaszo gekki sand and gravel which generated on ceilings or floating Was meant to be fast forwarded to the ground upon generating but he states that that was hard to do so he just left the sand and gravel hanging there to compensate for this issue he decided to add some dust particles which would fall below the sand or gravel as you can see Here which are meant to indicate to the player shit’s about to go down literally down oh three gold blocks dude zoomers lulw has made the advancement game menu zoomer cellulw tried to swim in lava this next bug is quite controversial since minecraft 1.8 one of the fastest Xp and gold farms in minecraft has been known as the donut in the sky pigman farm originally created by a small technical youtube channel called snow crash the farm abused the bug with zombie pigmen to farm them at extreme speeds above the nether roof while entirely afk the farm has seen many Improvements over the years by umango and others and still continues to be one of the most powerful and popular xp farms out there today but this farm actually only works because of a bug which mojang had been aware of and was supposedly going to patch in 1.16 but never did Basically how it works is this pigmen as you know have a unique mechanic which is the ability to alert and cause other pigment nearby to aggro at you and attack you if you harm just one as you would also probably know you only get experience from mobs if you actually Kill them yourself you can’t just drop them to their death as they won’t drop any xp if they die from an environmental cause however if a zombie pig man which is aggroed at you is killed by the environment or entity cramming as in this farm design they actually do drop Xp even though you didn’t manually kill the pigmen yourself and that’s the bug and the reason this farm works in the first place now as i mentioned mojang have been aware of this bug for some time and it was actually reported almost 8 years ago now in 2014 but was never Fixed apart from in a 1.16 pre-release where it was fixed but then unfixed again intentionally one pre-release later it’s pretty weird here’s a reddit post from 2020 by slicedlime one of minecraft’s developers just before minecraft 1.16 was going to release he states that pigmen gold farms are based Off of a mechanic that makes no sense and should not exist in the game labeling it a glitch seemingly hinting at the fact that it would be patched in the near future and that the technical community needed to find ways to get xp and drops legit the mr epic from two Years ago who built and used this farm regularly in his survival world for years at this point was not happy as you can see by my old down votes on this post and its supporting comments some technical players such as genombon and exuma void were all for this change While other technical players disliked it but alas it still remains in the game to this day okay here’s a bug turned feature that’s exclusive to minecraft pocket edition tommaso we mentioned earlier works on minecraft pocket edition and while optimizing it years ago a stage of terrain generation which checked whether terrain under Villages was suitable was accidentally removed that means that the game no longer checked and confirmed if the block richard village was going to generate on were fined and this meant that villagers could now generate over water however instead of fixing the bug and reverting the change domasol made it Into a feature by switching the gravel paths used for connecting village houses together into wooden planks do you remember what minecraft was like before you could sneak under slabs and enter cruel mode well interestingly crawling and the ability to sneak under slabs only exist today because of a bug And there’s actually an entire official minecraft article written about how that came to be so let me tell you the interesting story if you click f3 and then b you can see entity hitboxes and this red line here is its eye height a bug report was made talking about an Issue with an incorrectly sized hitbox and eye height for a variety of mobs such as the polar bear as you can see the polar bear’s hitbox didn’t move up with it when it moved up what the minecraft developers discovered while fixing the bugs in this report was that The actual player’s hitbox was broken as well when you entered sneak mode the player model entered a crouching pose or state but the hitbox in eye height didn’t follow along if you had a keen eye you may have noticed that when you crashed in first person your camera Didn’t go down nearly as much this bug was fixed and from then on when you crashed your hitbox and point of view would decrease accordingly however this led to a plethora of other issues since the player’s hitbox was decreased upon crouching now they could fit into certain spaces they couldn’t prior such As sneaking under slabs like so and other spaces which were 1.5 blocks high and this led to a bug where you could release sneak under 1.5 block heights and your head would instantly enter the block this was fixed by making so the player would remain in sneak mode even Upon letting go of their shift key while under 1.5 block heights alright nice so one bug became a feature what else well after the dev team fixed the initial sneaking issue they noticed issues related to swimming similar to the sneak issue when in swim mode the player’s pose would switch to horizontal as Changed in 1.13 and they could enter one block higher areas but upon leaving the water the player’s head would go up into the block once again so the dev team decided to make it so whenever you didn’t have space to crouch you would enter and remain in cruel mode this had Unintended side effects and bugs as well such as the game treating minecarts and boats as areas where there wasn’t enough space to stand but also trap doors forcing players into cruel mode the devs liked the fact that players could put themselves into crawl mode through trap Doors and could fit into and move around tiny spaces they previously couldn’t and decided to keep this as a feature and that’s the story of how minecraft bug led to core minecraft mechanics and features we use often today alright finally today is a bug which was patched eventually but has effects that Still remain in many players worlds today ever since enchanting was added you could only put one type of protection on an armor piece in vanilla minecraft there were some bugs related to specific 1 in 1 million mob drops which got around this limitation but if you want to know more about that here’s A video where i talk about that and more anyways in a minecraft 1.14 snapshot released in january 2019 named snapshot19w02a an undocumented change was discovered by players players could now put multiple different protections on armor through enchanted books and an anvil and they could also get multiple types of Protection on armor pieces straight from the enchanting table and while this change wasn’t documented anywhere once players figured it out and begun confusedly posting on reddit it was mostly chalked down to a snapshot bug however even though bug reports were made the change still remained in the game and when 1.14 would properly Release 3 months later it was still there for minecraft versions 1.14 1.14.1 and 1.14.2 you could legitimately obtain god armor in survival mode this feature was finally removed from the game in minecraft 1.14.3 released about two months later and we still don’t know if this is just a bug mojang somehow missed Or forgot to fix or if they decided to make it a feature and then change their mind later nevertheless players with older survival worlds such as my own still have their own god armor and it still works so remnants of this bug will likely remain in many players worlds forever Now there are some bugs in the game which could argue also became features but mojang never really confirmed such and i wanted to focus more on bugs which mojang had stated to be aware of or confirmed to be features so i didn’t mention them here but hey maybe i’ll do A part 2 in the future but anyways if you enjoyed the video be sure to subscribe and help me get to 500k follow me on twitter and join the
