What if mojang never added certain things to minecraft alpha? Like, what if the nether never came out, and the Halloween update never happened? What if Notch never stopped making secret friday updates? What if minecraft alpha had creative mode? Introducing the not so secret saturday mod for Minecraft alpha version 1.1.2_01, that answers All of these questions and more! Welcome to the parallel timeline of minecraft alpha. When loading up and going to create a not so secret saturday world, you’ll immediately notice that the world creation menu looks different and much, Much better. There’s a bunch of world slots instead of the old standard 5. When you go to create a world, there are a few more options than normal, firstly allowing you to actually name it, which wasn’t a thing in alpha, and then options for season, commands, and different world types, All of which we’ll get to later in the video, so stick around to see that. Right away when you load into a world, you’re met with beautiful ambient nature sounds, like waves hitting a shore when you’re on a beach, the wind, and birds chirping in the background. It immediately feels more alive than regular alpha ever did. Just listen to it for a second. So after the initial feeling of immersiveness, you’ll notice that the world kind of just looks like regular old alpha at first, which is completely on purpose. The mod is made to Be subtle. As you walk through the world and play through the typical first minecraft day, you start to notice very simple but great quality of life updates, like the ability to shift click in the crafting menu which didn’t exist back then, or different types of flowers, or an improved f3 Screen, with the seed, coordinates, and all the important information in a super nice format. And as more of the world gets generated in, it starts to look…familiar. This is because the developer, gus4512, pulled in netcode based on beta 1.7.3, namely the terrain generation engine. This gives Alpha the classic beta terrain, featuring the vast mountains and floating islands and overhangs we all used to love. It also fixes old issues like doors acting weird and improves mob AI. With the beta optimization added as well, the game runs a lot smoother, with little to no lag when Generating chunks and not crashing all the time like it did in regular alpha. And that’s just a fraction of the small things the mod offers. There are so many more incredible features that enhance the experience, but it would take ages to list every single one in a video, so I’ve left a link To the patch notes below so you can read through them if you’re interested in trying the mod. Let’s check out what really makes this mod shine, the meat and potatoes of singleplayer not so secret saturday if you will. Not so secret saturday features 4 new world type generations Other than normal. We’ll start with my personal favorite of the 4: floating. As the name suggests, this puts you in a world with crazy looking floating islands above the void. It almost looks like a vanilla version of the aether mod or something. After looking around a bit, I think i Might actually start a solo world in the floating island type. I mean wow, it just looks incredible with the old alpha feel and textures. The next type is corruption. It basically is designed to look like what happens when minecraft’s world glitches out entirely and spawns those weird Chunk holes around. It’s weird and cool, and you can see all the ores exposed on the chunk faces. Look, diamonds! Next world type is desert. It’s a challenge style world that obviously features mostly sand and cacti. It has sparse trees, grass, passive mobs, and dirt, spicing up the world a bit And limiting your options in a good way. Also, the world I spawned in had a massive mountain of sand which looked absolutely bananas. It’d be worth playing the desert world type for the unique sandy mountains alone. I’ve really never seen anything like that before. The last type is 2D perlin noise. Perlin noise is referring to the terrain generator minecraft uses, and to be honest I’m not much of a javascript code guy, so I’m not going to pretend I know exactly what this means. But walking around the 2D perlin noise world type sort of feels like old alpha with A bunch of terrain randomness, like random dirt blocks looking out of place, and stuff like that. Another cool feature is winter mode. In case you didn’t know, back in the days of regular minecraft alpha there was a brief period up until the Halloween update where there was a 1 in 3 chance Of spawning into a winter world, which essentially just meant there was snow everywhere all the time. Not so secret saturday basically just gives you the option of choosing one if you are so inclined, instead of having to delete and remake worlds until you got a winter one. And while I was Playing the winter world, i found another tiny but nice detail that the mod has. Cobwebs under overhangs and in caves. I feel like every corner you turn with this mod you discover a new little quirk about it that makes the overall experience so much better. It’s cliche, But it truly is the little things. Oh and speaking of that, you can sprint by pressing control. And it looks SO funny in third person in F5. Like, somehow even funnier than the old infdev walking animation. Just look at him go!! The way the developer chose to handle duration is really Cool as well. Instead of the hunger system as we know it in minecraft today, the sprint in this mod is handled via stamina. And stamina is handled via how much health you currently have. If you look closely at the hearts I have, you can see the stamina go down and stop as soon as I hit zero hearts. It’s another big incentive to keep your health at max in your survival world. And the last feature of world creation is the ability to turn commands on. Not so secret saturday features all the best and most useful commands in minecraft creative mode today, like teleport, summon, time set, and give. And speaking of minecraft creative mode, another huge aspect Of this mod is to set your game into creative. Pressing ‘B’ opens the creative menu and shows all the available alpha blocks in an easy-to-select format. The rest of creative is self explanatory; instant block breaking, unlimited block placing, and using the middle mouse button for pick block All apply just like it does today. Can’t fly though. I think the alpha engine would explode if you tried. Last thing I’ll mention, I didn’t get any footage of this for the video, but not so secret saturday has extensive multiplayer support. Like, the developer puts a huge focus On getting these features working and smooth for alpha servers, and it really shows. I’ve watched a few videos of people playing on not so secret saturday SMPs and it’s actually unbelievable how well it runs. I definitely recommend picking this up with a few friends if you’re interested In reliving some old nostalgia, just for the sake that it works so well in a server alone. Oh wait sorry, one more thing. Sponges. The mod puts functional sponges back into alpha. In the real minecraft timeline, they were removed in infdev and literally Did not get re added as a functional block until official release 1.8. And they work so cathartically in this mod. Like, I could do this all day. Like I said earlier, there are so many other aspects to this mod and I only covered a Fraction of them, but I wanted to keep this video semi brief. It’s also still being developed as we speak, but I’ve read in the patch notes that the developer is mainly tweaking optimization to make It run even smoother. If I piqued your interest, go check it out in the links below. If you feel a lot of nostalgia for alpha, and maybe want to make a new old world for nostalgia’s sake, I highly recommend picking up not so secret saturday just for the optimization experience alone. Anyway though, if you enjoyed this nostalgic mod showcase, let me know by leaving a like on the video, and subscribe for a potentially endless minecraft experience. I love you all so so very much, remember to stay hydrated, treat yourself once in a while, and I’ll see you in the next one. Video Information
