Turning Minecraft into a Horror Game to Terrorize YouTubers

I transform Minecraft into an intense horror game with unique items custom mechanics and a very immersive Ambience just so I could terrorize my YouTuber Friends by making them play it recently I played my first show of horror games but one genre in particular hooked me ghost hunting games the thrill

Of investigating a bend on locations discovering their secrets and not knowing what’s after you always has me on edge and as such with more and more I played I quickly came to realize I could create such an experience in Minecraft with a very simple plan first we create

Come up with the layout to get a good idea of the size the environment and the navigability but we needed more inspiration therefore I booted up my favorite ghost hunting game phasmaphobia and explored the Asylum map to gather some screenshots but naturally after all that hard work it’s impossible to stay

On track I’m gradually losing my grip on reality I started causing some mischief you’re so flicking ahead no I’m not I’m not it’s flicking itself stop I get him I get hate what are you doing my game’s already lagging like crazy oh no I just got rid of them

I’m fine I’ll get rid of them eventually we got back to work building a Lobby cafeteria kitchen and Corridor areas which very quickly gave me a first version of the world that I could use to start working on the mod the first problem I encountered while making the mod was Minecraft’s natural brightness

Even on its lowest setting you can faintly distinguish the environment so I fixed that by making the game completely pitch black in the dark no matter the player’s brightness setting but ran how are you players gonna navigate the map enter your classic horror game best friend flashlight the way this flashlight is

With the custom renderer Library called canvas allowing me to easily make it good looking with shaders however this method also had two cons one shaders render in third person breaking the immersion and two other players can’t exactly see the flashlight beam only you and to that the only real solution was

To Fool’s first person perspective and only make one Ghost Hunter play at a time which actually makes the whole experience even scarier so you can’t even blame me for being lazy here and on top of that using canvas for the flashlight not only allows me to make it

Look very immersive but it also makes me able to customize its appearance exactly how I want what look at this they’re so funky that’s a bit too weak but uh it works we can try and make it extremely strong which uh basically goes to the other end of the hallway oh my God

Yes which ultimately after messing around gave me two ideas making the flashlight flicker near the ghost to decrease visibility and increase anxiety and an even scarier idea for later after taking care of the lighting aspect of the game I had to rework other vanilla Minecraft mechanics like food Health

Experience and the way sprinting works as they are not really that fit for horror game the solution removing them all and boom now we have no way of different cheating creative mode and survival mode although I still wanted players to be able to Sprint so I could

In my own system based on stamina which um all right I tweaked the values a bit and made the working a bit faster and the sprinting now actually is reasonable my next step was adding equipment that allows the players to detect The Ghost and other paranormal occurrences to

Complete objectives an EMF to detect the ghost’s presence and interaction with the environment a photo camera to take pictures of the ghost manifesting itself and a recorder to well record sound the ghost would make and to go along with these new items I did an objective screen that replaces the inventory one

Now after taking care of all those relatively small previous changes it was time to take on the biggest task yet as you guessed coding the making the map feel unique and immersive so I added more elements to the game starting by introducing cosmetic Furniture such as custom doors Rusty Wheelchairs and

Stretches from there I implemented more furniture that the ghost can interact with like sinks showers and toilets and given I was also planning to make the ghost able to hunt and Chase the players later down the line I introduced custom beds and lockers as well which the Ghost

Hunters are able to use as hiding spots because they’re gonna need some to cry from fear and safety when they’re in Mortal danger one thing I really like about the stretches and Bets is that they can be combined however you want giving them a lot of decoration potential which I’ve achieved through a

Complex algorithm in conditional State system called cheating with a model and making the legs extra long to encourage exploration I also did notes scattered around the map to collect and barricades looking suddenly as until the hunters get a special item that special item being a fire out that they will need to

Collect somewhere in the stunning areas this might also give the ideas to some players that they can slash the ghost which they can’t so that’ll be funny and last but not least I wanted to implement something very typical of horror settings electrical maintenance I began this test

By adding the breaker which needs to be turned on in order for the light switches to work and while coding the light switches I realized they allowed me to do what’s commonly referred to as a certified move see they only work when the power is on which means

That technically I could have a light switch constantly turned on at the entrance closing the Escape door when the power is on so once the Ghost Hunters want to escape I can force them to go back and turn off the power in order to open the doors and cherry on

Top make the ghost hunt them constantly as they have to run back I’m evil horrible just aside the main reason for me to code the power mechanic originally was so I could have creepy fluorescent lights the first prototype wasn’t convincing so I did three things first I

Added a bloom effect to the lights with the help of canvas and while I was at it also applied a similar effect to the breaker’s light indicator second I made them emit a constant humming reminiscent of such likes and third I coded them to flicker randomly like any good demon

Possessed ghost-haunted evil spirit infested light shirt oh and I also added the shattered variant of these lights but that was something special a bit later so stick around it’ll be worth it and with all these elements now into the game I wanted to Showcase them to looks

These and some um okay interesting choice and so finally while Lux finishes the map we arrive at the part you’ve been waiting for coding the ghost now there are two ways I could go about it I could make a mob with an AI that would decide itself what to do

But that requires a lot of time and effort even for basic Behavior second I get to play the ghost which means more time to coach special events or abilities and it lets me terrorize my guests I know which one I’m going with without decided I started by coding

Three moves for the ghost undetectable mode which removes all of my footsteps and collisions but also makes me unable to interact with the environment interaction mode which while still being invisible has footstep sound allows me to interact with the environment and be detected by the EMF reader item by

Players and Shadow mode which is basically the same as interaction mode but I appear as a shadow meaning the Ghost Hunters can use this opportunity to take a photo if they’re not too busy screaming that is now I just lied to you because there’s actually a fourth mode I

Still needed to code the haunt mode the mode that allows the ghost to hunt the Ghost Hunters yeah I wanted to begin working on it by giving it a sound cue indicating to the players that it’s time to start running so I dread my hands at recording and editing ghost sounds which um

Yeah it was not very convincing so we’re getting them from the internet along with the sound aspect I polish the visual one by making the goose blink short circuit light on his path and dampening the walking animation Lim swing because let’s be honest the default microphone isn’t exactly the

Most intimidating after that I created the ability to see players with electronics turned on kick them out of their hiding spots but most importantly wanna hit them no Second Chances and with a hunt mode out of the way it was time to mod in the real Spooks the first

Episode that was implementing sounds I could play to scare plays that they can also record like moans Whispers laughs and singing in French because nothing more frightening than knowing the ghost is French well actually there is a sound effect even more terrifying added but I’ll keep that one secret for in my

Guest play with those addition I also decided to use a mod called sound physics remastered which like its name indicates adds sound physics like Echo and sound dampening which really ramps up the immersion of the map after the sounds it was time for the second step to maximizing The Spook Factor ghost

Events the first ghost event I wanted to go to was the light bulbs exploding which I accomplished by making a new overcharge fluorescent light block that explodes after a certain time and actually I couldn’t stop myself from messing with it that’s satisfying oh yeah yep yep all right yeah

That’s just so good Shenanigans aside I still needed to detect how to pop all the lights in the room which wouldn’t be too complicated given all light blocks in a room are connected to a singular Redstone circuit so I coded in an additional custom block the overcharged

Mark upon being placed this block turns adjacent Redstone into more markers and light into other chunks lights continuing like this until it covers the entire circuit and breaks all lights connected to it for the second ghost event I figured we’d need something more relaxing than the lights exploding see

Wouldn’t it be really funny if your flashlight stopped working and say you couldn’t turn it back on for a bit when you can finally turn it back on really letting you relax and there’s definitely not anxiety-inducing mood until it turns off and back to normal again yeah I think that’d be great let’s
