Okay okay I I’ll try to understand what I’m about to see yeah yeah so there’s a whole bunch of individual use cases but uh this here is kind of like the simplest one so essentially it’s a a secret entrance uh so essentially you have to figure out How to do it uh so you can use any creative items you want uh it just has to be non-destructive and uh and the other thing is you just have to stay on the front here all right wait so what’s step one again I put stuff in the chest You mess around okay this one’s trapped um what in the world man here I’m just going to take everything out honestly all right we don’t need any of this in here not going to Lie it’s in open no it’ll be obvious one if you get it n this is going to I actually have to solve a puzzle right now I wasn’t expecting this hold on what if we put all the Redstone items in here it didn’t work the items the They’re just random items oh they don’t matter just throw me off yep all right here you said something about sound I’m I’m going to cook real quick I mean I guess I could let you kind of go around but it’d be unlikely you’d be able to hear something useful I’ll just I’ll just Cook if you expect me to do some sort of redster I’ll I’ll be the first it it’s it’s it’s once you find it it’d be real simple and I I I’ll give you a hand I need yeah yeah these two chest are decoys can I break blocks uh No how would I suppos to notice all right whatever I’m just going to like hold on I got to go should I be I’m going to go in Survival cuz I don’t want to play in Creative all right it’s all cringe I’m not a cheater I’m just going to like do a Little bit of this see what happens when I fill it up completely nothing okay take all my stuff back pickaxe no oh wait big brain big brain nah nothing nothing uh now I could give you a hint of showing you how to like I can open it and uh see if you can Replicate yeah okay so uh just kill me okay so I have knifing as you can see I dropped my stuff so I’m just going to uh oh just close it again okay try to replicate that I’m just going to do exactly what you did no items you open it up 3 Seconds let’s go I don’t know what I did but it worked okay wait did what did I tap the inside of it if you tap the inside does it open yep yep what the heck how does it even do that like register that that’s that’s whate Yeah that’s one of the uses but it has like many more like it can detect the weirdest things that a comparator or Observer can’t do that was kind of way cooler than I thought it was going to be not going to lie yeah I need to do this like this someone Needs to make an escape room and do that that’s like genius that there was one use case of the cut switch known as a comparator update detector now for most of you youve probably never seen a redstone circuit that is able to detect things like clicking on a slot for Example even mumble jumble doesn’t even know of his existence is not mentioned in this video cuz we’re going to be taking a look at all of the Redstone components in Minecraft and I’m going to be trying my best to explain every single one of them fully so you know What you’re doing when you’re building Redstone Circuits and wasn’t why is that still powered has this not realized that it’s powered oh okay we’ve got a bit of a bud situation going on that’s curious so to put that into simple terms uh this comparator here is not Realizing that the craft there is empty and the only way that we can make it realize is by causing it a block update okay even I didn’t know this circuit existed thinking that it was just a simple bud switch which is a block update detector as you can see What I did right there uh and I was making compact designs using the newly added crafter in the first snapshot making a whole bunch of designs before they unfortunately patched it out in the very next snap shot now I only heard of the term cut uh switch from when Ray Works mentioned it in passing and but there’s currently a bug with Crafters at the moment if I put some bones into this Hopper here once the crafter crafts all them they are no longer in this one but the problem is the computer doesn’t actually notice that the item has left This is actually called a cud which means a comparator block updator it’s actually kind of cool because if you just place a block beside the comparator it then remembers that it should turn off so it’s actually a way to detect block updates that short segment led me Down a rabbit hole research only to find information limited and very outdated as the circuit has only grown more powerful over the years so this video will explain what it is how it works all 50 use cases for it all 13 designs of which two are newly designed by Me first we have to go over what I originally thought this Behavior was which was ABD ABD is a block update detector which is essentially what it is is whenever a redstone block like a piston or component is in the powered state or in the wrong state but doesn’t Realize it yet until you give it a block update so right now all these are restra it but as soon as I give it a block update they all extend and then when I break them they stay powered and I turn turn off the power source they don’t retract until I give It a block update this set here reason why this works is through quasy connectivity which is a property of dis sensors droppers and pistons that allows them to be activated by anything that would activate the space above them no matter what is actually in that space And for this case this is just a simple Bud because I manually have to power each and then block update them uh but they don’t automatically reset cuz I have to do that manually so what a uh bu switch is is is something that automates automatically so this case here was Using Pistons but the simple burn out’s uh redstone torch clock is T is actually a bud cuz whenever you place a block beside the redstone torch it updates and turns off and then once it’s in the same state again I can break it and it updates again and essentially how to Tell if you have a a bud is essentially you can just look at the Redstone and see if it makes logical sense cuz right now it’s like okay uh this Redstone Dust is not on so this torch should be powered but this torch is not powered so This torch here is in the wrong state so when I give it a block update it updates to the right one and then that there would start the thing where it Powers this one turns that one off and does real quick until it burns itself out where it’s where it’s in the bud State as you can see it repeats now other common designs we’re kind of using Pistons using the quy connectivity so essentially the the range of a bud switch is basically a block that’s directly connecting to them or for Redstone components anything that essentially Powers the air air block Next to it so for example when I redirect Redstone it it changes it into it but if I change the redstone repeater that goes uh parallel with it it doesn’t update but if I run it into the Block in front in front of it that’s kind of Touching one the sides of it then it updates so there’s that design there that uses the vertical quasy connectivity this one here uses the angle one where you you just place a block and updates itself so that these ones here are but switches since they’re automatically resetting and once again There’s the uh the torch burnout and then this one here uh the the cud it has it does have the same behavior as a bud switch where if you place a block next to it it updates or if you change the Redstone from two blocks away it also Updates however what makes this one unique is it can detect things that the regular bud comparator or Observer cannot detect on its own so one example I have is he signs you just right click to edit and then press done when you’re done no yeah yeah that’s pretty cool now if I do That over here doesn’t update doesn’t update doesn’t update so that’s another use for this uh detector now let go what is specifically a cud so a cud is a comparator update detector it has some formal names like T teu D Tile NTI update detector also High the name of Dud data update detector and in Ray Works video he called it a cud which is also a another name for it but 10 years ago the community fought over names and eventually the Cod name one out so that’s the name I’m going to try to refer to and if you’re making more Content on it try to refer that name so people don’t get confused with over multiple names okay so now on to kind of like the rules or or how it works first of all all cuds are buds but only comparator is a cud so essentially we we Had like piston ones torches and there’s probably other Redstone components like dispensers and droppers that you could use but specifically the comparator is the only block that has the special properties attached to it and that’s why it has its own name because it has its own unique properties that none of the Other Redstone components have second rule of Thum if the block that you’re trying to use with the cud if it has any sort of interaction with the comparator it has a special use case if you use it in a cut the third one is the range so The comparator in the cut switch is essentially acting in all four rotations at the same time so to show you what I mean so let’s say we have this sample case here if you have a storage block or a chesting uh essentially you can have a uh for the comparator locations you can Have them on the four blocks immediately surrounding it pointing in or you can have a solid Block in between and as you can see these ones can still detect it now what cud does is it essentially inverses the the chest and the comparator so essentially what it’s able To do is it’s able to read the contents of all four chests at the same time so either you can have the storage block right next to it uh on any side it doesn’t have to be the correct way like for example it could read it like if it Was like that uh or you can have it even one farther out as long as you have a solid Block in between the comparator and the chest that has entity data so now that’s kind of the range on it so that go over all the unique cases of the Cod that a regular Observer comparator or bud switch cannot detect of which there are 50 so first uh group I have is a group of 30 these ones here are specifically things that those are components I just mentioned can’t do so first of all starting with the uh Shocker box so there’s the traditional uh click of a slot either left click or right click either all works the closing opening of the Sher box box here is is actually the bud causing it the other thing it can do is it can detect items Going oh I okay cuz since since it’s a solid Block it’s uh not uh going in but anyways if you uh essentially drop items in it can able to detect any item change and not just increments that a a working normal comparator could do now for Shuler box there is one design on YouTube that actually uses a cut switch in it which is a sh shulker splitter by do nerd so that’s the uh there’s only really two uses and this was one of them so again we have a barrel here uh so Barrel kind of detects the same thing it Can also detect when it’s open and closed and just this reminder you can do that uh place it there and then see when I open and close it it detects it so regular Observer couldn’t do that uh next one is the respawn anchor I’m not going to click on it for obvious Reasons cuz I don’t want to blow up the set but uh essentially actually I can probably put the glow stone in here oh no uh do they have in anyways it can detect when the thing FS up or when uh it gets used uh however I just don’t Want to use it right now uh cake uh it can detect whenever slice is e right now it’s block update detector but if you have it through a block for example it’d be able to detect that you e eating the cake through a block next one is actually interesting let me Get some bees out here cuz I think the rest of them disappear uh and then let’s set the time tonight as you can see when the bees enter the hives the beehives are or the um yeah beehive or the bee’s nest it updates the block detector uh Observer Or a comparator can do that and it also detects if I said back to day now um as long as they’re not shy okay they are shy but when they do come out it also updates when the bees exit The Hive as you can see right there next we have command blocks uh Essentially whenever you uh let’s see here whenever you exit a uh oh sorry not when you exit uh wherever you hit done on a command block it the Cod switch which can detect it as you can see so far so and so forth next one is the two Types of campfires it’s kind of interesting because it has a unique Behavior so if you put a fish on it or a food essentially turns it into a clock I put multiple Foods on it this constantly receiving updates probably on the cooking time of the food that’s on there As you can see when it stops cooking the clock stops you see it keeps going and it stops so there’s that so on to the next I’m going to grab some coal here for the next one we have the the different types of furnaces so again you Can detect whenever you click an item in this and any Hoppers going in you can detect when item goes in but a special use case for this one is essentially wherever you uh have an item that smelts it receives an update which regular zerver comparator cannot do same Goes for the blast furnace with the special items uh okay so the next one here is a brewing stand brewing stand once again you can click the stuff uh and then you can item transfer stuff so actually this one here is not a Sol block so I can actually show you here so Like get grab some blaze rods uh or blaze powder specifically and when I drop an item as you can see it sends an up update and even though that if you had a regular comparator it would read the strength of one and if you put in the second one it would still read Strength of one however with the cut it detects it so there is that use case here and this is the other use case I’ve seen out in the wild using a cut switch is Andrew’s uh Tech MC uh potion sorter that actually sorts uh potions uh without uh changing the potion type so Like if you put in like U what’s a good example uh if you put an awkward potion it’ll detect that is an awkward potion without turning into some other type of potion that that’s uh nor distorted and also it saves on the blaze powder resources so that there is a really good Use case of the cut then once again it works with the hopper itself because um whenever you put an item it receives the inventory update receiving that one thing it can’t detect though is uh the blocking and unlocking of it so that has a special use case compared to an observer and Then again same thing for the dropper it can’t detect when it’s powered but it can detect item changes and that kind of stuff now one special thing with the inventories and that kind of stuff let’s say I Chuck in a a stack of blocks here these items are going Through as you can see you can see it visually going through except the comparator is not doing anything and quite often you can create designs like this it’s like it just doesn’t work well with if you do the same thing except with a cud switch look at that it detects every item going Through so so a cud which US uses a bud comparator actually detects better than a regular comparator anyways uh moving on to the next uh we have the crafter the Crafters is slightly more unique compared to the other ones cuz whenever you you lock a slot that there also uh receives an Update through the cut switch so then on to the next we have the the regular two chests same thing you can click on it or whenever you take an item out or whenever you take an item out it also updates it and then so for so forth for Books again uh you have whenever a book is entered or whenever you take a book out or whenever you take a book in or whenever you take books out and then the furnace kind of same thing it can do it whever there’s a slot click item transfer or whenever item is Melted this one here is a juke box so whenever you put in music desk here uh it gives it update and then whenever you take it out it gives an update so technically you could have on players back in the day but people kind of forgot that the cut switch existed Before they made the Jukebox changes to help make that possible okay so on to the next thing next one is not playing so if I just power this uh receives a block update next one is the uh uh is the newly added decorated pot since they can store stuff now so Wherever you uh oh give me a sec oh okay cuz I have the wrong item uh cuz I already had an item in there I don’t know what item I did have in there but so let do redstone block see every time I click it it receives an update whereas If I do that with an observer redstone block please it doesn’t receive an update and then once again you can use items to uh trigger it or to take it out so you can probably make unique things with that uh next thing is the detector rail the detector rail uh has Really unique properties cuz essentially it turns the detector rail into a pressure plate so anything that lands on it so for example if you shoot with an arrow detects it and so forth so forth now interesting property it’s like okay suppressor switch uh what happen if we Add a storage onto it like the storage chest that has Behavior with a comparator It turns into a clock so that could be an interesting use case next one here we have is signs so whenever you exit to the edit mode either pressing escape this time or pressing done uh sends an update to it also works with the hanging signs Too as you can see on to the next next we have the um composter so right uh right again let me just use some cake here uh first of all went for the level change you can get a block update let me grab a hopper here for a Sec and then it it also detects the change from Full that that that temporary full State until it hits this boneal texture and then once again it can detect when items enter or or leaves you see okay on to the next we have the The Cauldron here again it can Detect to let me grab a bottle uh changes in wire level as you see there uh and then put wire in detects that uh so essentially that’s the stuff it detects next is actually a mob spawner which is essentially uh what you do for that one is technically if you get your Hands on spawn eggs either in Creative or survival you can click on it to change it oh I’m not in oh I am in peaceful interesting uh anyways whenever you click on it it changes the data which it can detect so that’s all the unique detections that a cud can detect That a bud or a normal comparator or Observer cannot do now let go to the 28 cases that uh one of the uh one of the components like The comparator Observer or bud can detect however the cut has an advantage of being able to choose any uh single Strength output that you want and as a way to direct it so in most cases in the bud you use a redstone block or something get yourself a update of 15 however if I want to I could use a let me grab a cauldron here and some Water and let me just uh replace the colon here with a block of water uh update this once so as can see it’s outputting a single strike with free while Observer and that they’re all always stuck at a uh single strength of 15 so you can use Different blocks so you can use a cauldron for 3 to one uh you can use a composter to get up to seven there’s a whole bunch of different designs or if you use a um a storage chest design you can get any strength from 0 to 15 as you Choose so uh you this here works with all different types of components so for example the redstone torch that there also updates it and since it’s a redstone component it has has that trick of updating it one forever away see there uh it also works with repeater However due to the bud rule thing it has to be facing into or towards the comparator same thing goes with the comparator uh it can uh what’s on this one here okay this one here is probably the lever it can detect the lever uh for This one here it has to be kind of powering onto the block to do it uh that’s the one thing of that if can deta the individual rotations of an item frame as you can see there uh and then again it can also do buns Stone buns pressure Plates pressure plates and that you can also do a sh sensor and Sh Shure of whenever they get powered and you can again customize the strength output it can also do oh uh oh it can also do a calibrated one if you get hooked up right uh it works uh it Can also work with trip wi hook uh so first of all uh you can break the string wherever you place the string wherever you enter wherever you leave it detects them all and then again it can uh detect so I need to get myself a book put in a bunch of random Data put that book into there to detect when you put the book in and out and it can also detect when you change page and then again uh it can do an item transfer which is essentially taking in or out of the book lightning rod essentially it can do a lightning bolts So I’ll just do a summon lightning bolts oh okay that detected stuff over there uh trust me it works it’s just a command that’s a little funky uh next thing is we have the end portal frame so if you grab yourself an i vender you put an i In it receives an update so that is all 50 use cases for the cut switch and as more items that work uh work has a feature with a a redstone comparator the more features that the circuit gets which is a lot lot more compared to like Only like 10 back uh in 2014 so now let’s go over the designs so the original designs here uh by a nice Mark MC which is now an unlisted video is based off of using locked chest because essentially uh if there’s a block above it you can’t open The chest but also when there’s a block update the comparator shouldn’t be able to read what’s in the chest so just looking at this circuit here okay it’s not supposed to be able to read anything in the chest so this comparator is in the wrong state so if I give it a block Update here it Powers it or if I do a um let’s see here let me grab myself a barrel put a barrel here as you can see it receives an update so that’s that so that’s one version there another version is really similar however instead of using a torch It does couple block changes in order to essentially have it uh retract on when it detects so there’s the two locked Pistons uh design another design here is using a cats uh it’s technically a quiet version however all the designs I’ve seen of it is extremely large and Uh clunky and that kind of stuff so essentially you see I can open up the chest here this here is reading fine however when I put a cat on the chest it locks the chest I can’t open anymore and the comparator is Bugg so whenever it receives something it updates and then See it’s back to normal state but then wherever I put a cat off it when oh you’re not off it yet I can open it but it’s in the bud State now cuz it should be powered it should be reading that and now it updates now this version here is A tuggable one because essentially unlike the other designs where when you power it once it it goes back to Dawn State while this design here which is my personal design I made essentially has a comparator going into the Observer points to the back into a dispenser with A bucket wire into a chest that has any old item you can put fill it up just one or Max in order to change what strength you get out of it and I have a cat sitting on top so essentially whenever I power it it Powers the uh wi log suggest Forcing the cat stand up so the lock the chest is no longer locked which means that this here is right now is staying off which is in the bud state but if I uh make it receive our update takes the wire back out locks the chest but it’s In the bud State now so then once again I if I give an update it resets okay so that is the cat uh variant of it um so on to the next next we have uh retroact variants so this one here uh re retracts Redstone using a Detector rail this version here is also by nickm Mark MC so essentially to um yeah this the comparator that’s bugged here so I’ll just place a block there as you can see it retracts that alling it to power and so forth and so forth so that’s one version of it there version Is here of this design right here this one here was designed by uh person on Reddit going by not M mad mat uh this one here uh specifically uses a single strength of one cuz it uses the trick of wherever this piston retracts actually I’ll just show you it’s specifically This comparator oh wait no not compar uh it’s this comparator that’s in the bud State it’s also a um table one cuz essentially whenever it’s exposed like this it Powers into the side block which should be powering this comparator So then whenever receives block update you Realize that it cuts it off and the uh Redstone line goes straight so technically this should be unpowered but it’s not until it receives a block update so that’s how that one works or that style here’s the more modern designs uh there was one or two people who kind of Uh did videos on them instead of 10 years ago they did them 5 years ago so we have the most of them are based off The Cauldron so you just look at it here and just see the design of it again you just do that and resets and N variant of It here do that oh wait wrong thing it’s the block up here the good thing about this version is it’s the least amount of Delay from uh the comparator to the whole circuit cuz compared to using this circuit here that has two zers this one Here if you put in uh 64 items this piston goes up 64 times or this gets powered 64 times so that’ be good for a counting there’s this design here which is uh oh actually give me a second here uh I forgot to give credit to oh actually I Don’t have a I’ll fix that in post um this design here was by Carson s works with the harbor speed this one here was by uh gpw and then this one here was made by uh Peter jtw and that’s just a design that uses the the chest as you can see all these Designs are more compact on to the next this one here is kind of a chest variant of it but again this one here is well it’s a tilable one but it’s also a toggle one where it has different states depending on how many times you use it And this one here was is essentially call it a t cut cuz it’s toggle and it’s made by Quantum Apple now another uh method of making one is using the um mine cart with chest on a detector rail this one here was the first version made Using it uh made by pi you might recognize his name he was uh back in the game uh in this in the scene 10 years ago so that was his first version the next version here was also by pi but as you can see it’s much more Compact and Doesn’t rely on Redstone clock running all the time essentially how it works is compared to works with detecting a uh di contents of a chest when it’s on a detection rail except using Pistons you can kind of pull away and get into the bud State and then whenever you you get Given updates by block update or using one of the det detection meets it receives an update as you can see this Design’s a little big so I I made a new one that comes packs it down by a fair amount but it’s the same concept works the same way that’s that So uh here are all the designs that you can find available on YouTube or on the Internet and as you can see I add two new design designs with that one back there and the one with the cats uh now I did have a whole bunch of designs back Here using the crafter however uh they all broke one snapshot later so these these designs are no longer a thing that’s another one there I failed but uh yeah so that is all have a good day I hope I spread the word about this new well not new but this forgotten circuit That only has growing in power Video Information

Many have seem to forgotten about CUDS, Comparator Update Detector Switch and it’s ever growing uses. I hope this video sheds light on this circuit to inspire redstoners to create contraptions not otherwise possible.
It video will go over the Component that once had many former names: Tile Entity Data Update Detector (TEDUD), Tile Entity Update Detector (TEUD), Data Update Detector (DUD), Comparator Block Update Detector (CBUD), before deciding on Comparator Update Detector (CUD).
This is a Java exclusive feature so sorry bedrock players.
