after finding data packs and resource packs for minecraft that allow you to add custom music discs to the game, i figured i’d give it a shot. but i decided to mess around with musescore to make my own music! this is my first fully finished song… the score can be viewed here: https://musescore.com/user/75920659/scores/13667020. recolored music disc was done in photoshop, the background video was from my own game, and i put it all together with clipchamp 😀
this disc is called “shattered memories”, and it is composed with 4 orchestral instruments (vibraphone, marimba, piano, and harp) and 2 synthesizers (pad and crystal). the first 30 seconds start with a peaceful melody from the marimba, joined by the harp, representing the stillness of memories.
then, the tone of the piece shifts, with the introduction of the pad synthesizer. the pad synth and the piano repeat the same 4 measures as the other instruments start to feel the shift– the disturbance of the untouched memory. the vibraphone plays a phrase of eighth notes that ascend and descend, showing how the movement of life is messing with the stillness of memory. meanwhile, the marimba is playing syncopated eighth notes, acting as a pulse. when the vibraphone phase repeats a bit lower, the marimba’s eighth notes don’t descend the same way as the vibraphone does. the marimba’s syncopated notes now create dissonance. the memory is touched, things aren’t flowing the way they’re supposed to. at measure 25, the vibraphone’s repeated phrase is now an octave lower, with the introduction of the crystal synthesizer. the crystal synth and the lower vibraphone notes create a hollow feeling. first the memories were touched, and now they are shattered. the harp has a small solo, trying to prevent the memory from shattering, but it is drowned out by the synthesizers. the marimba has a similar spot, drowned by the synths and the piano playing an Eb chord instead of the normal Db chord, further emphasizing that the once still memories are now shattered.
there is a brief pause, followed by the synthesizers repeating the melody from the start. the harp joins back in. the vibraphone, marimba, and piano join back in again, with the vibraphone now playing the same melody as the harp. the synths mixed with the orchestral phrases from the start create an eerie, but enchanting feeling. the memories may have been shattered, but they are still memories. they still have their initial purpose, with the new alteration. the 4-measure phrase is repeated by the orchestral instruments, with the synths now playing the backings instead of the main melody. the whole note is repeated by the instruments, while the synths are now silent. the piece ends with a piano phrase, supported by the crystal synth. the memories were untouched, then they were shattered, and then they were sort of put back together, but it won’t be the same. now, it’s time to let these memories just be.
