Yep you read the title right i a longtime java player with 10 years of experience now truly believe minecraft java edition is worse than bedrock now before you go dislike the video i am still a java edition player and will be for the future i was just like many of You at one time for years i ignored the bedrock edition just thinking it was that crappy version of the game made by microsoft with micro transactions to try to squeeze a bit more money out of a popular title but looking past that there’s actually a lot in the bedrock version of the game Which is actually better than the java version of the game and you would be seriously surprised at some of the things the game can do this video isn’t going to be trashing java edition nor is it going to be directly praising bedrock i’m instead going to tell you Everything the good the bad and the ugly of minecraft bedrock and why i believe it is better than java at the end of the video i want you to go vote in a poll on my twitter to see if i’ve changed your mind so let’s begin but quickly before i do consider subscribing It really helps me out no pressure though anyways minecraft bedrock edition originally known as minecraft windows 10 edition was released a few years after java first being available in july of 2015. it was supposedly released as a universal version of the game as it’s not possible to run java edition universally For example windows tablets don’t come with a keyboard and mouse therefore unplayable on java but playable with windows 10 edition another reason windows 10 edition was released as we will touch on in this video is it allows for cross-platform compatibility with console and pocket editions of the game natively Anyways the point i’m making is that bedrock was released a significant period of time after minecraft had its time in the spotlight as by 2015 the game was losing popularity this meant that a large chunk of the already established player base including myself had grown to love java And the many memories and moments we had had on the game so when we heard that a new edition of the game was being released which seemed to be primarily pushed by microsoft we already didn’t like the sound of it and then upon hearing of the micro transactions where players were being Charged for things us java edition players had access to for free we were even more disgusted vowing never to touch that dirty version of the game for the vast majority of the player base that’s what happened and as such they never really looked into bedrock edition just remembering that it was a Worse version of our beloved game and that was true for me for a long time as well up until earlier this year when i made my video on the evolution of minecraft graphics and had to use bedrock edition to showcase ray tracing from that video i discovered that there Is actually a lot about bedrock edition that surpassed java edition and beyond the micro transactions the game is really really solid the first thing i noticed almost immediately was the performance with ray tracing enabled i was expecting to take a hit even with my beefy graphics card the rtx 3080 but i was Pleasantly surprised it ran smoothly and i got no noticeable lag so i decided to go into the video settings to play around even more and i noticed some other things first of all bedrock’s render distance can go all the way up to 96 and run quite smoothly to an unknowing Java edition player at the time this was really bonkers you see with some modern versions of optifine you can set the render distance to a max of 64. although most modern versions are kept at 48 and even that brings the best pcs to their knees with my rtx 3080 it took almost 5 Minutes to load all the chunks and then once it did i got lots and lots of stutters and freezers and would be lucky to get above 30 fps while standing still flying or moving a lot was a surefire way to crash the game and the thing is that’s with optifine an External game modification not produced by mojang or java developers vanilla on the other hand is quite grim on vanilla minecraft 1.17 the game is capped at 32 render distance only and runs shockingly just standing around i was getting around 50 to 65 fps which is horrid considering my pc And then flying around in creative and loading new chunks brought performance down to 20 to 30 fps on the contrary bedrock edition loads all 96 chunks very quickly and the performance is still playable as i was getting around 30 to 40 fps while moving and not only That but just general performance is so much better on bedrock chunks load in noticeably more fast and efficiently just fly around on both versions and you can see the difference javas is slow and looks clunky whereas bedrock is smooth and the chunks load in like a fast wave in a ripple fashion This is especially noticeable on vanilla servers where java chunk loading is unbearable within elytra more on that in just a second though higher levels of anti-aliasing are setting renowned for large performance impacts also runs phenomenally on bedrock just in general bedrock significantly outperforms vanilla and modded java and this performance Isn’t only exclusive to the client server performance is also much more incredible on bedrock edition i’m sure you all know about the hive java server shutting down a few months ago now one of the oldest and most famous minecraft servers pioneering globally popular game modes like the survival games trouble in Terrorist town and splag well do you know why they closed their java servers doors well there were multiple reasons but one key factor which they stated was that it costs the same to run a bedrock server with thirty thousand players as it did to run a java server with three thousand Bedrock server performance is just eons better evidently in fact they even stated that the java server would have closed down even earlier if it wasn’t for the bedrock server on a smaller scale though java server performance is still abysmal in fact vanilla server performance is so bad that any servers Who manage to get more than 15 or 20 concurrent players need to use an external server version of the game such as spigot bucket paper and more that’s right vanilla minecraft servers are so bad that even with just a dozen or two players it becomes unplayable and trust me I would know for the longest time i ran an smp with my friends with vanilla server software and it would begin to get noticeably laggy even with three gigabytes of allocated ram just when four of us were online and one person was flying around with an elytra And even with my public smp server on og network come check us out by the way we had to use spigot spigot for a while also wasn’t good enough and performance was just terrible with a hundred players i’m sure many of you remember our server’s frequent crashes when we had Just released the smp so why is java’s client and server performance so abysmal in comparison to bedrock well it comes down to the way the game was coded now i’m no expert so i decided to ask some actual experts from the minecraft at home team who informed me that it comes down primarily To differences between java and c plus the two different programming languages used for each version of the game now supposedly c plus plus used on bedrock is just better in general for bigger programs such as minecraft able to support more players and able to compile the game’s code far Faster and more optimally basically when minecraft java is launched the game’s code is compiled into an intermediate stage that is then translated into code that the cpu can execute and use therefore compiling it in real time bedrock on the other hand gets compiled before it is even on your pc by mojang And the version you run has code which just gets executed right away by the cpu no other compilations translations or stages needed it’s much faster and more efficient in addition java edition’s algorithms responsible for chunk rendering and many more functions is wildly inefficient this is why game modifications such as optifine Sodium and more can drastically improve performance because they make the game’s algorithms far more efficient in general java as a programming language sacrifices performance and efficiency for ease of use there is a lot lot more to say here on the technical side of the game and why Java edition is so bad but i think you get the gist of it and we can move on so what else does bedrock have in its favor well tell me this how often had you wanted to just play with a friend in minecraft on your own private world or just let your Friend check out your single player world as i’m sure you know it’s a big effort unless you want to play on public servers or your friend is right next to you in your house you have to download server software set it up port forward maybe use hamachi Yada yada yada it’s a stupidly long process that nobody really wants to deal with on bedrock however there’s this neat little friends feature which works similar to a friends list in steam for example you can add friends and see when they are online and playing and then when you Are in a single player world you can go ahead and invite them just like that your friends can then accept the invite and would probably be able to join and play with you all it took was like two or three clicks it’s so simple i don’t even think this can be chopped Up to the game’s different programming language this time why can’t java edition have a friend system or a method of inviting players to your world as well this is something done in so many games it would be so useful for minecraft now bedrock also has native cross-platform play and while it is a Useful feature i wouldn’t really count it as an advantage of bedrock and i think it’s fine and maybe even a good thing that java doesn’t support this natively there are game modifications and plugins such as gaza mc which allows bedrock plays to join java servers but almost no Big java servers are properly supporting it right now anyways with all the praise we’ve given bedrock today i think it’s finally time to talk about its arguably biggest shortcoming the marketplace for those of you unaware the marketplace is the bedrock editions in-game store where you can purchase skins maps Welds texture packs and much much more for an in-game currency called minecoins and the only way to get minecoins is with real money now some of you may be wondering what’s so bad about that plenty of popular games sell cosmetics well you see java has one of the most Popular if not the most popular community scenes of any game in the world for over a decade we’ve had access to an innumerable amount of mods maps skins resource packs servers and more some of these play created projects have become so popular and renowned that they have accumulated over 100 million downloads Just by themselves and the best part about that always it’s been 100 free forever so when you compare that massive amount of high quality community generated content to a mobile game looking store that’s trying to sell you what else java players have had free for years you can’t help but be disgusted however There is one redeeming feature of the marketplace majority of the content on here like java is produced by the community that means the individuals who make and thus put this content up for sale also get some of the money which is kind of cool but besides that I and many other long time players are not exactly fans of the marketplace and yes i know you can still install mods and get other game modifications on bedrock but there is far far less out there and is also overshadowed by the store now finally one more negative of bedrock Is that it does still lack some java features it doesn’t have hardcore mode or spectator mode no debug screen and you can’t build on the roof of the nether it also lacks some commands which i honestly use a lot such as the locate bim command and many more and while it Definitely is a shame that bedrock doesn’t have these features the average player will likely not use most of them and as such i don’t think it’s that big of a deal it’s still bad though it does make up for it with some bedrock exclusive technical features such as behavior packs that can modify And allow for custom behavior of mobs and entities so the title of this video is not clickbait and i do in fact think bedrock is now better than java but when i say that i’m comparing unmodded or vanilla bedrock to unmodded or vanilla java you see the reason we still play Java and the reason it is still the primary choice of version for those who played the game for so long is that its history and community is far superior to that of bedrock in my opinion and that’s not to throw any shade at bedrock but it’s really impossible for Bedrock to have a more interesting history to it when it wasn’t even the first version of the game likewise the java community scene from modding to massive public servers to all forms of content also far exceeds that of the bedrock community i don’t think any game can Even compare when it comes to just how ingrained modifications and player run servers have become on java edition so yes when comparing just the base versions of bedrock and java bedrock wins by factoring in the community and its endless content java clearly comes out on top at least in my opinion However i want to know what you think and if i’ve managed to change the mind of any of you so i’ve made a poll on my twitter which will be linked down below and i want to see if you now think either java or bedrock is better so make Sure to go vote i hope you enjoyed today’s video let me know
