We made Chess with just redstone!

Okay we had some uh we had some technical difficulties but he’s back you ready to explain some chess oh yeah okay so first we’re gonna start playing a game for you guys i kind of rushed the second half of the video so i just want to show you up close how it actually

Works um so when you first want to select a piece you hit the stone button and pistons pop up these blocks and if you want to change your mind you can actually just toggle it it’s just a t-flip-flop circuit underneath so let me show you how the moving actually

Looks you press that and if you want to move it up here you press the wooden button takes just a few seconds pops up there clears here and it also deselects uh whatever you selected and so then it would actually be slowing his turn so go ahead

All right i think i’m just gonna move as a three-time world champions chess uh player i think this move is the best yep what do you mean by that is both sides at chess so one thing to mention about this the knight has some weird movements and um

So you kind of just have to know the movements yourself and play according to the rules there is no uh system inside it to actually check whether you’ve done a legal move or not um but yeah i just thought that would be kind of i mean it’s not too difficult but it’s

Pretty complicated and even if it were to work it would slow down the game by a lot so this just makes it a lot simpler you can put the pieces wherever you want and if you’re playing a serious game with your friends then you just play according to the rules

It’s basically just like a real life chess ball basically when you can move the pieces around whenever wherever you want exactly and another thing is the reason we i did this selection have uh the pop up with the pistons is because if you want to play the rule where as soon as

You touch it you have to move it this makes it a really easy way to simulate that because as soon as you press that button it’s obvious that you’ve touched it and now you’re forced to move that piece if you want to play that way

So now that we’ve messed up a board a little bit it’s actually easier to show you the reset function so as soon as you press that button everything gets set back to the default state of the game and there you go when i refer to the

White team it’s the ones with the lamps being on black team is the lamps being off now i’m going to show you some of these modules this one is for the white player over here is for black and they’re almost exactly the same so you have two

Icons that are meant for castling one is for the opportunity on the right between the the right rook and the king and the other ones on the left with the left rook and the king so as soon as it’s available it lights up and then you be

Able to press that button and it automatically castles for you then down here is the pawn promotion section this also lights up when it’s available and you get to pick what piece you want it to be one other function that i didn’t mention is if you select uh nothing

And you just press the wooden button it actually places nothing there so it functions as a clear and so i’m actually going to clear out these pieces in between that way i can just show you guys an example for the castling all right i cleared these out

As you can see the lamp lit up so go ahead and go ahead and hit that button slowly i didn’t get it all right let’s go so you press that button let them see let them switch yo and the last module in the middle here is actually just in case you mess

Something up and you need to spawn in a new piece again so let’s say you were to capture something um and you didn’t mean to capture it you can always just move the piece back but the spot where the piece used to be is going to

Be empty so you’re going to have to respawn it and so you just pick whatever piece you want let’s say you wanted a black pawn you flip the lever and then you just press the wooden button wherever you want to put it back so this makes it so that you can

Essentially always undo your moves so here we have a wholesale that is basically isolated from the whole chess board over there for each piece we actually encode it in a 4-bit binary number there is about 12 pieces so here we can see the uh each code each binary code for each pieces so

For example imagine matt imagine i want to show on this uh cell a night what would i do read this this chart and then pick the white knight okay white knight code and then i see that it’s just three in binary and when i input it into this

Kill me yeah it’s it’s it’s three in ternary all right in my heart it’s ternary so what is going on with this cell over there with the display section well we highlighted 17 layers that are basically responsible for turning on a rough parts in the display over here

According to the chart of colors over there so for example if we wanted to light up uh the pink part of the of the display we would actually just turn off the pink layer here this chart over here we can actually build any piece we want

In chess piece you want so imagine we would want a knight all right a knight do you agree with that with that choice i think it’s a good choice stop stop it stop it anyway i’m the one talking you know you know it’s my time to shine

So if you wanted to draw a knight you would actually light up the lime section the green one then the magenta one then the black one blue brown cyan magenta and white if we input the knights code we can see that it it is actually the knight okay that’s pretty awesome description

Of a 4-bit binary to chess piece decoder that took us a pretty long time so really proud of that and how compact we got it but anyways i’m going to go over a little bit of how the rest of it works so down here i got everything color

Coded and when you first select a piece that’s this green part right here and when you select it it basically gets allowed through these comparators so right now everything is being canceled because nothing is selected like i said as soon as you select it it gets allowed through

And when it’s allowed through it comes along on these purple lines and you can see these purple lines are ored from every single possible spot so no matter where you select it from these purple lines all group up to right here and then they actually get transferred

Up into these light uh light green lines and then the light green lines get split into everybody’s input so basically what’s happening is whatever you select comes on this purple and gets put into every single uh cell around it that way no matter where you want to move it it’s ready to

Be put into any other location so when you hit that move button and you decide that you want to move it somewhere else no matter where it is it’s ready to be put in all you have to do is just unlock these repeaters and load it and

If that didn’t make any sense basically the way that i think is easier to understand is imagine that as soon as you select a piece it gets offloaded into some separate register and then whenever we want to move the piece it grabs it from that register and puts it where we said

To move it and then for these modules with the castling all that we really have going on is down here i think with the the dark gray this is a decoder to detect uh what the pieces are in this final row because when you’re able to castle is just based on what the

Configuration is right here if you have rook blank blank blank king then you can castle here if not you just can’t castle now of course there’s some other rules too about castling with whether the king is in check or not but i told you guys already there’s no check system there’s

No checkmate system there’s no legal move system so sometimes the icon is going to be wrong if your king’s in check but anyways it just it just detects the configuration that you have and if it looks good enough it tells you that you can castle and if you can castle and you

Press that button then it sets it to the configuration that it is after you canceled and then lastly pump promotion is really similar instead of detecting for the correct castle configuration it just detects whether there’s a pawn of the opposite color in the last row and

If there is it lights up that icon and then you have a choice you can set it to any of these four pieces as soon as you select a piece it just puts that code and it tries to set any pawn of the opposite color in the last row to that

Code so for example if you had a pawn in the last row and you said queen it would go through every single piece in that last row and it would say if it’s a pawn set it to a queen all right that’s pretty much all we got thanks for watching guys
