🎶[Music]🎶 Minecraft is an ever-giving engine of creativity. Maybe not absolutely anything is possible within your survival Minecraft world, but chances are, many things you can think up will be doable with the in-game cubes, with just enough challenge to make things interesting. And that’s exactly Why making Minecraft videos for YouTube is hard. There are tons of cool things to do, but the game doesn’t really impose any of it on you. Sure, go kill a dragon or whatever, but that won’t fill ten Years and nine seasons of content. The fun store run out, you will have to make your own fun. And that’s before we get into all the logistics of running a YouTube channel and getting noticed by The Algorithm. That’s why it’s very helpful for YouTubers to get together and maybe have some Help with their video production, and hey look, I wonder what that “start a server” button does? XISUMA: Now we’re all trapped in a hole together. Worst thing we’ve ever done. [others chattering and laughing] XISUMA: We’re supposed to be professional Minecrafters 😓 >> This is more or less the idea of how Hermitcraft came together. A group of talented people doing Survival Minecraft and making videos about it on YouTube. Making your own fun is hard! What if we make… each other’s? So without further ado: what is Hermitcraft SMP? DRACULA: A miserable little pile of secrets! >> Actually, here at Hermitcraft Recap, we try our best to make sure that there are very few secrets left unanswered. And whatever remain, at least aren’t miserable. DRACULA: But enough talk… Have at you! >> [panicked noises] At its core, Hermitcraft is a vanilla Minecraft SMP. “Vanilla” here means that there are very Few mods on the server. What mods are there only serve to help the server run smoother. And maybe add some incredibly minor cosmetics. Plus of course, there’s the voice chat mod that just allows people to talk to each other within the game. That’s why when someone walks away, their voice gets quieter. Minecraft, of course, is the game. And SMP stands for “Shenanigans, Mischief, Pranks,” which captures the vibe of the server pretty well in my opinion. CLEO: Oh… No! No!! They’re still coming! How- how many fish is this? Are they still popping out from- they’re still popping out from underneath the ground! >> Keep in mind, the unspoken rule here isn’t that everyone here is to help each other play Minecraft. It is, however, that everyone here is to help each other make Minecraft videos. So if you do a community creeper farm, that’s maybe two videos. Mmm, that’s okay. But if you instead direct the output of that farm into somebody’s house? Well, that’s a year long prank war, all pre-packaged. FALSE: This is a little bit worrying, that I can’t see anything. Ah, my god. Wow. Isn’t that a view and a half. That is terrifying! That is the best! Ahh. I mean- I’ve gotta give it to Mumbo, I’m sorry. GG dude. >> That’s not to say that Hermitcraft is just a series of fire and chaos. Most of the Hermits’ runtime is dedicated to completing ambitious projects, Be it a complicated redstone contraption or an impressive build of some sorts. This actually becomes a problem every now and again, because the advancement of tech and builds piles up and gets in the way of dynamics between the players. Add to that the file size of the map, The lag from the redstone projects, and you’ve got yourself a serious longevity issue. PIXLRIFFS: Some item voiding would come in handy for MumboJumbo when, during one of his AFK sessions, he manages to not only back up all of his farm’s newly Build storage with pumpkins and melons, but on top of that, has 96,000 item entities just sitting there in an infernal cylinder of lag. Remember to always install overflow protection, kids. Only you can prevent server fires. MUMBO: Oh dear. I’m sorry guys. >> That’s why every year or more – but without a set schedule – Hermitcraft undergoes a full server reset. A new map is generated on a brand new seed, and every player’s possessions are cleared, and the game begins anew. This is what they call a new “season”. It may feel disappointing to have all the progress lost, but also very exciting to see what route it takes this time. After all, it’s not like the builds and the farms disappear completely! You can actually download any of the old seasons’ maps on hermitcraft.com and explore them. Plus, It’s not like people’s relationships are reset with it. People remember and frequently reference the things from previous seasons. And starting from scratch also allows new interesting collabs and relationships to grow. As such, Hermitcraft doesn’t so much have a story as It has history. Not so much role play as play pretend. And only as much plot as, let’s say, your average reality show. That’s why the server resets don’t really hurt the spirit of things. The true progress here is progression of the players. It’s what we learn with them, and it’s What they learn about Minecraft, about making art, and, in no small part, about each other. STRESS: We play Minecraft. TFC: Like a great big, psychotic, dysfunctional family. [everyone laughs] XISUMA: I don’t know about “psychotic” but okay. >> Another fun term you’ll hear a lot when watching will be “base”. It is widely accepted In the Minecraft community that a player’s base is the general area where they keep their stuff. The Hermitcraft members however are well, Hermits, in more sense than maybe is appropriate. More often than not, their bases are significant distance away from one another, which has a Lot to do with just how ambitious their builds are, really. It doesn’t help that most of them have some advanced redstone crammed inside, and having lots of that in a smaller area would simply hurt the server’s hardware. This eventually even resulted in the idea of a “megabase”, A base so big it can’t just be considered a normal build. Later, even a “gigabase” was dreamt up, however that one is more about combining several people’s giant builds together. And yes, all of this just confirms that the locals have very little self-restraint. Counter to personal bases stands the idea of a community district. These could be many or could be few, but most seasons will at least have a shopping district; somewhere for everyone to try and pawn off their resources. The currency of choice here Are diamonds, even if the whole group is usually dressed in netherite by day four. This is also where the players would build their starter bases. So, everyone will have a home, a base, an assembly of shops for each of thing they’re selling, a nether tunnel Connecting their stuff to the community nether hub for easier transportation, and whatever else they decide to build, really. It’s not like land costs money in Minecraft. And yes, Season 7, you *are* a joke to me, stop asking. XISUMA: Basically, you know, how someone joins a community like this is through reputation and Showing they can do what they do. It has to take all of us agreeing that we feel like, you know what? Some new life in here is what we kinda need right now. >> The server features an evolving cast of Minecraft YouTubers, With over 20 active members as of Season 9. Some of them, such as Xisuma and Hypnotizd, have been there since the very beginning, and others have come and gone along the way, with GeminiTay and PearelescentMoon being most recent additions back in Season 8 [everyone greeting and heckling] PEARL: Just a little bit intimidating, With all these faces. Hello! GEM: Hello everybody! PEARL: How’s it going? >> These members bring in a variety of talents to the server, ranging from to building to redstone to just plain being weird, with some even stretching the definition of what “playing Minecraft” is. [stone door grinding] TANGO: Yesss!! Hahaha, ohhh it’s amazing! Server restart in one minute. >> And listen, I could read you out the entire casts’ names like this is Yakko’s World, but the truth is, after ten years of Minecraft, these players don’t necessarily fit into a single convenient box like “redstoner” or “builder”. Their skillset varies largely, So just summing them up in one or two sentences would be a disservice. Besides, why do that when I’ve got an entire interactive quiz video right on this channel all about what Hermit you should watch depending on what You enjoy in your Minecraft? If I did this right, there should be a button on your screen right now that you can click and it will take you right to that quiz.
