Minecraft is an enormous and expansive game built on surprisingly simple mechanics but the more you poke at it the more complex things can become if you need help understanding this deceitfully simple game then you’ve come to the right place i’m william strife and welcome to the minecraft guide In minecraft the nether is a dangerous place where being aware of your surroundings is key to survival to that end understanding the biomes which make up the fiery landscape is critical which includes knowing the value of the very dirt and rock underfoot here we’ll cover the nether’s five Biomes the blocks from each one and the building materials you can create from them as well as some of the various quirks and dangers of each area if any of the ores mobs or other spoils mentioned here interest you be sure to check out the other guides in this series over mining enemies Nether dungeons and a beginner’s primer links in the description now without further ado let’s get right to it we’ll start with the biome that the rest of the nether is based off of the nether wastes the nether wastes are mostly composed of a red brittle block called netherrack with pockets of Material known as blackstone spawning infrequently the lower the elevation the more likely it is for lava oceans to generate around which you’ll often find magma blocks across the mostly barren and uneven landscape you can find a series of resources both attached to and embedded in the netherrack including glowstone nether gold ore Nether quartz and ancient debris so far as mobs go the nether wastes is home to just about every possible mob from the nether with few exceptions but the most likely ones that will spawn are ghasts and zombified piglens that’s a basic rundown of the biome so Now let’s focus on the blocks you can dig and their purposes first is netherrack a stone so brittle it breaks rapidly even with stone picks and burns infinitely when set on fire its main use is for smelting to make bricks and four bricks can be crafted into brick blocks Those blocks can then be run through a furnace to create a cracked variant or combined with single bricks to craft nether brick fencing additionally the brick blocks can be crafted or run through a stone cutter to create slabs stairs walls and a chiseled variant it doesn’t stop there though as you can Also combine the individual nether brick with a plant called nether wart to create red nether brick this block is pretty much the same in all ways but it’s a brighter shade of red and can only be crafted or cut into slabs stairs and walls next is the aforementioned blackstone Whose purpose is to serve as another exclusive replacement for cobblestone it can be used to craft furnaces stone tools and weapons as well as being crafted or cut into slabs stairs walls and a polished variant meanwhile the polished black stone can also be crafted or cut into bricks slabs stairs walls and a Chiseled variant but you can also make pressure plates and buttons from it finally there’s magma block which gives off a faint glow and is mostly decorative it also delivers a half heart of damage when any mob or player without fire resistance stands on it though this effect can be suspended so Long as you crouch however the most unique feature of magma block is how when placed beneath water source blocks it creates a column of bubbles that supplies infinite air and pulls all creatures players and items downward this makes it possible to create both water traps as well as steady water elevators That go down that’s pretty much everything for the nether wastes keeping in mind that the mobs ores and spoils are covered in separate guides with all that covered let’s move on to the next biome and its intricacies the soul sand valley the soul sand valley is one of the many biomes that More or less spawns on top of the nether wastes and changes its properties in this case it replaces a good amount of the netherrack with gray and black colored dirts called soul sand and sole soil across the landscape you can find various large fossil structures composed of bone blocks Basalt spires that reach from ground to ceiling and the air itself changes to a greenish blue color there are a few mobs that can mill about here as well but there’s a particularly high spawn rate for skeletons and ghasts now let’s take a closer look at the blocks First is soul sand which as the name implies is basically an underworld version of sand you dig with a shovel but it’s infused with tortured and lost souls soul sand is unique for a series of reasons starting with how all creatures slightly sink into it which slows them down It also burns infinitely when lit and carries a blue flame called soulfire which can be applied to torches lanterns and campfires by adding soul sand to the right crafting recipes additionally all forms of soul fire are particularly special for how it scares away piglets but their bloodlust will overwhelm their fear of Soulfire if they decide they want to kill you outside of its crafting value soul sand is also special for how it’s used in summoning the wither boss which is a particularly powerful and dangerous enemy with an entire video dedicated to it the most unique feature soul sand carries though Is the creation of water elevators where magma blocks create infinite air and pull things down soul sand creates infinite air and propels anything or anyone upward this is done by placing it beneath water source blocks and using it to your advantage you can create water elevators that will quickly Propel you from bedrock to world height in about 30 seconds finally the last and by far most important purpose soul sand serves is for planting and growing netherwort the details of finding netherwart are covered in the bastion and fortress guide but for now understand that it’s one of the basic components of Alchemy and you need soul sand to grow your own now after sand is soil specifically sole soil which carries most but not all the same features as soul sand it can be used to summon the wither craft soul fire light sources and burns infinitely but its main feature Is being a critical component in creating infinite basalt which we’ll touch on in a bit the next block to discuss that spawns in the soul sand valley is bone block while not exclusive to the nether you’ll find more of this block in the valley than anywhere else in the game It can be broken down into nine bone meal which makes it useful for forcibly growing things a much needed feature especially in the nether where things aren’t too prone to grow now there’s one more block that spawns in the soul sand valley but it’s actually more important to the Next biome that shares its name the basalt delta the basalt delta can best be described as an inactive or latent volcano unlike the rest of the biomes you find which seem to generate on top of the waste’s biome the basalt delta mostly replaces the nether wastes with its own special materials The air is a shade of gray with a significant amount of particles and you can occasionally hear the sound of a geiger counter detecting radiation the landscape is composed of a grey stone of the same name basalt with a significant amount of black stone present as well the surface of the delta Is packed with small pools of magma and while gasts can spawn here the main mob that will harass any player is the magma cube drilling down on the materials you find in the delta since you already know about blackstone the only thing to cover is basalt this somewhat fragile gray Block makes up most of the biome and is less blast resistant than cobble or blackstone basalt is one of the few stones that can be oriented differently based on where you’re looking when you place it and it can be crafted or cut into a polished variant for a bit more flare Now as stated earlier sole soil is used in the process of infinitely generating basalt this is done by letting lava flow over soil soil when blue ice is adjacent to it as for blue ice it’s collected from cold biomes or by first harvesting up normal ice with a silk touch pick Then you combine nine normal ice to make packed ice and nine pack dice to make blue ice which never melts even when placed in the nether overall that’s about all for the basalt delta so let’s move on to the last two biomes that are mirror images of each other the crimson and warped Forests crimson and warped forests are more or less two sides of the same coin serving as the only sources of fireproof flora in the game both biomes start with a sort of overgrown netherrack respectively called crimson and warped nilium sprouting from this undergrowth you can find crimson or warped roots and fungus More notably though are the large defining parasitic growths that function as trees and a source of fireproof wood-like material they’re composed of warped or crimson stem for a trunk with foliage made from either warped wart block or nether wart block and both bear an inedible fruit called shroom light finally there’s biome Specific vines you can climb that come with each forest the crimson forest has weeping vines hanging from trees while the warped forest has twisting vines growing up from the ground but when it comes to enemy and mob spawns the two biomes have no overlap and are distinctly Different in the case of the crimson forest you’ll find an assortment of hostile mobs including hoglands piglens and zombified piglens meanwhile the warped forest only has one enemy the classic enderman making it a particularly good location to hunt them now with the general rundown finished let’s dig into the details of those Blocks and resources first off is nilium in both its crimson and warped forms for nearly all intents and purposes nilium is to netherrack as grass blocks are to dirt the key difference is how grass spreads naturally to dirt but nileum will only spread to netherrack manually this is done by applying bone Meal to netherrack that is adjacent to the nylon you want to spread additionally applying bone meal to nilium will forcibly spawn all the undergrowth that generates in the associated biome including crimson and warped roots and fungi in the case of warped nilium this can also spawn twisting vines since They grow from the bottom up while red weeping vines spawn as part of large crimson fungi on that note the large fungal trees grow from small crimson and warped fungi these two mushrooms serve as the saplings for the large tree-like fungus that define the biomes however they will never grow into large Fungal trees on their own two things are necessary to make this happen first the mushrooms must be planted on nylium of the same color and second you have to apply bone meal to it the trunk or stem chops down just like a normal tree and outside of not burning Works just like wood thus crafting it leads to crimson or warped planks which leads to stairs slabs fences gates signs doors pressure plates buttons and trap doors the planks also make normal wooden products like sticks chests barrels and everything in between additionally both crimson and warped fungal trees often grow With one or more shroom lights a block that emits as much light as glowstone is compostable and is fastest broken with a hoe now this brings us to the final and most painful part that makes up fungal trees the foliage nether wart blocks and warped wart blocks serve as foliage For the large fungus these blocks are compostable but they don’t decay like the leaves of normal trees from the overworld this means all the wart blocks have to be painstakingly removed by hand with the most effective tool being a hoe there are other more sophisticated methods though but We won’t get into that territory here Overall the five biomes that make up the nether are chock full of useful building materials and renewable resources the process of collecting them can be tedious and painstaking but they’re great for helping you survive in the unforgiving landscape as well as giving special color and texture to any builds you construct Things don’t end here though if you want to learn more about the nether and
