Where who is the Luminess back again with another video on laser golden land let’s start off with a quick note so this used to be the old IP address one for 9.2 or 2.12 7.13 for I still owned that IP address but I moved Micra server to another host with a different IP Address so the new address is 88.2 14.5 6.9 4 or alternatively the domain is in ew.com also points there so let’s get started and let’s keep breeding some cows Oh leaders are here but we are going to watch a video of the DEFCON conference channel from Def Con 24 with the title lost I got a talk by lost with the title hacker fundamentals of cutting through abstraction oh wow everybody’s got their own conversation going on cool I guess you’re not really wanting to pay attention to what the badge means or any of the good wonderful puzzles and other Fun hijinks that Fosters put into it but if you do how’s everybody doing I would ask a little patience for those of you who may have heard rumors in the wind we we have pickups with regarding the badges every year and this particular ketchups has Made me bill the past three days two to three hours total so they’re with me I also I’m going to do a kind of news thing during this one-on-one talk it’s going to be kind of an experiment and it’s either going to go totally off the Rails or it’s going to be fine but that’ll be based on you guys and meat so we’re going to try to go through this together I do this one-on-one talk every year but those week you don’t know because it’s one of you are way smarter than I am Like max a lot but how many of you this is your first time with your hands yeah welcome [Applause] enough loops so I really hate giving talks like this does I really prefer having discussions and on that note there is a room on the conference floor It’s the 10:57 room and a request that couches are put in there every year because I encourage people to come in and just sit down and hang out and talk with people because if people at this con whether there’s a person who invented a programming language or wrote Some major app if they’re so pretentious that they’re not approachable I don’t want you trying to push someone and you try and talk to them and they’re too high and mighty to talk to you you can tell them to [ __ ] off because I just don’t want If you guys are here for the first time how many of you are from out of the United States Wow thank you thank you for traveling so far Wow it’s the TPS already [ __ ] are you all are you kidding me are you kidding me is it like [Applause] And I’m often asked where you know how do i structure these things have custom of it so I believe I do have a video CD where I’m constantly changing what I’m completely obsessed about and I have these little quirky things that I do every year like one thing that I would Recommend you guys do is I pick two publications of any times that are completely out of my wheelhouse every year and I read them during that year and over time the knowledge base that I have tends to grow and the reason I do that is I have a couple of pet peeves And in full disclosure I used the one-on-one talk to try and dispel or stop some of the tech geek stuff that I have in the community and I try and do that by raising us all together so here’s a couple that means that I have for those occurrence before I apologize But there’s a lot of new people here I mean who here has been to a toss of my before I’m not very many okay sorry about how helter-skelter like I said I’m running on very little sleep right now in fact I promised the opening ceremonies tomorrow will be much more Structured we’re supposed to be having fun in here this is one on one and originally it wasn’t even official track part of DEFCON it was just us hanging out through the highways and some other people put with this track together but anyway one of my pet peeves is this idea That as hackers you have to be creative and in order to be creative you have to think outside the box and how many has heard the term think outside the box crazy man how many of you know what the origin in that term where does that come From besides the obvious impose you have a set of mental heuristics that you’re imposing upon this problem and you carry those with you and if some high-and-mighty guy came down from off the top of the mountaintop then said thou shalt not impose in this particular heuristic then all of a sudden magically You’re going to be creative in go haha Eureka and you’re gonna solve the next you know major problem so there have been studies that they’ve shown the debt to total [ __ ] the original origin of that term is from the nine dot problem which is a puzzle where you draw a nine Dots in a box three three and three let me say connect all the dots without lifting the pen how many lines can you do it and of course or and sometimes you look up a constraint you can’t cross the line clumsy thing this depends on the bearing And of course did very bleep people have imposed this mental box because it’s in a square and so it’s really really difficult and then some jacket comes up in his awful ever and he’s like oh I go outside what that spring was the out of you out of there well it’s been studied And it’s been shown that even if you take a group of people and you tell them from the start you have to draw outside of this imposed square that the same percentages of people solve the problem or can’t solve the problem and the way you get people to have those Epiphan all haha creative moments is through deep study in a particular subject area now as we go further and further with technology Google search engine it’s a gratification phone in your pocket I don’t have to go through any of the mental labor to get any answers for questions that I have anymore We we do certain things faster but we’ve lost the sense of wisdom and our knowledge and by doing so we’re starting to shortchange ourselves then we’re going to start to lose in the Epiphany genius moments that come from that deep study of a subject area so when I do my Cryptographic puzzle challenges I structure them to do three things I want you guys to talk to each other I intentionally put things on the lanyards every year so that you have to find other people and you have to interact with them not only that but there’s Stuff even on the back too you have to take it off you have to linger and from the other person it forces at least a time for you to interact with one of those other people and for a crowd that is predominantly introverts you know I’m Trying to force you to talk to each other you know they’ve all joked about you can tell who the the the extrovert that’s like the duck on conferences he’s got to look at someone but anyway so that’s my soapbox for that during the one-on-one talks I have a Tradition also of saying I’m not going to explain and obviously in a 40-minute talk a few minutes I mean you know how long I’m supposed to be up here but in a talk I’m not going to be able to teach you or or give you deep knowledge and a Subject what I’m hoping to give you our hook I’m hoping to give you a hooks that give you the right points to start to go down and by the way I mean DoCoMo I do not mean to show disrespect at anybody I know a lot of you have a deep knowledge And a lot of these subject areas but I’m kind of shocked on it to try and give people a foundational knowledge but these are the things that I think if you kind of generally know about you can have it well in foreign conversation with someone in a place like that but Cool we have to understand where I’m coming from yes No yo wait yeah I’m tired too well what do you think of the badges so because this is 101 you don’t tell don’t tell DTM I tell you because I’m I don’t know if he’ll say how many ceremonies I’m a secret now I’m I said you’ve got spirit 101 which means your heart sport they’re their work let’s just say I can’t tell you quantity but there were thousands of badges that were ordered how many of you have ever done my production of electronics of any kind okay how many of you understand how Long it takes to do not only do picking places but how long it takes to program firmware for something every single one of the bad news is we have around your neck right now we’re programmed within this space the last three days [Applause] and that’s and that’s why I say none of This is what happened without the community so that wasn’t me I was lost jackass with a programmer that was hundreds and hundreds of volunteers who weren’t paid who are people that come to the con that are here early that we run up and down the hall is going we have emergency guess What badges showed up and they weren’t programmed with where they got to us and so we set up a chop shop and went to town and and there are people there are people in this room right now who’s gonna wait literally for days okay pet peeves number two I get really Frustrated with people first of all if you don’t understand or know something admitted I didn’t know lots of stuff when I talked to people at DEFCON there’s really really smart people around here you guys and when I have conversations with you after I get common tops like this people come up They want to talk about stuff and they’ll say something oh I don’t know did it tell me explain that to me my grandfather used to talk about the Lumbo the younger people in the audience they’re like who the hell is that Google is so Columbo is a fictional character Who is like excuse me the ultimate social engineer he used to get everyone he meant to teach him something even if you knew it already because it disarmed them so social engineering tip 101 right there but I try and not have you know when I first came Def Con I’m scared Crapless like these guys are ways smart they’re gonna say stuff I don’t understand and I get to come an idiot kick me out right I didn’t know what was going on and if you can just be confident enough to talk to people be like dad I know what that is meant Lipslide don’t be an arrogant ass but if you know something share it with other people and that’s the only way this community can get better for example how many of you are aware with the discussions that are going on with cryptography and backdoor yes no the politics involved with what’s Going on that’s going to fundamentally change communication and with people like us folks at the DEF CON conference we need to talk about stuff like that because otherwise stuff’s gonna go and the Genii won’t be able to put back in the bottle after certain events so I’m Not going to push my politics on you but let’s just say we need to share the knowledge of information so that we can all elevate and it’s not select okay I get really tired when I talk to people and they make the statement I know that A computer uses fire I know that the computer speaks buying it oh that just like it’s like a cheese grater on my thigh and in oil subscribe sorry so and I often will ask people do you know what that really means did you understand that now we know There’s a lot of people in the tiniest equality there was code I’m gonna give [ __ ] help processor works I keep the attitude how can you think like that remember the discussion we just had about creative epiphany moments a lot of times was a pivotal woman’s become from tangential information that may be Related to the subject if not directly involved because it was directly involved some jackass would already thought of it how many do you know about the original bell labs or heard of it and if you have it especially young folks go look it up because it’s like my Dream meant that like buddy go anywhere a time machine I would go back in time to the original Bell Labs the reason the original Bell Labs with my way you’d have seed because we original Bell Labs you have a lot of things that you use in your daily life because we should feel That what it was is a collection of experts of different areas that they weren’t stoked but it wasn’t like here’s the math department here’s the physics department here at the electron spec they were like the chemist was next door to the computer guy who has been distorted the mathematician x30 the Latest and they all had access to each other and that’s what caused this this genesis of all of this great creativity and we started using that because everybody wants to keep everything secret they don’t want to share and and so we lose those epiphany interconnections so back to the I know How a processor works if you come to me and say Ryan you wasted my time at Def Con I don’t care what processor works I just want a code I would say to you you do not have the mindset of a hacker and I don’t want to talk to First saying like he doesn’t want arrogant people that don’t want to talk to you and yeah just you know and I actually learned really cool stuff so here’s one of the experiments we’re gonna need in you guys are all coming along with me on this right this one I’m Not gonna lie I want your phone so in a second we’re gonna synchronize and we’re gonna start it and I’m going to try in 10 minutes to talk through going from the three basic fundamental logic gates with functioning processes in ten minutes no going I would understand nothing okay How many of you are students right now I noticed talk I’m sure I’ve watched this talk already like a few phrases I like ringing a bell for me yeah whatever let’s keep watching you can kind of forgive me for that so what this is not this is not me teaching You all this information this is me running through the forest while we like my hair’s on fire screaming up things that you should Google or look up that you would then be able to have the knowledge of what these things are and it’s one or two things sounds Interesting to hook on to that and go down that path so again 101 talks nobody’s going to be able to give you a deep dive and a 40-minute top are you ready okay so at like three minutes or somebody somebody to be like holding a three don’t be like I guess you get every minute one two because I kind of got a feel for how a little is I have to talk really fast I’m still processing ten minutes no impressions all right ready okay start shipping okay so we got this guy history cool he’s cool he comes up with this Type of logic where he talks about these three fundamental logic gates and or and not how many pretty that raised yes yes we all heard of it okay so if I take a piece of wire okay and I cut it here and here I have just created A logic gate it’s called an Y because if I connect the wire here but not here the electricity doesn’t flow if I connected here not here electricity doesn’t flow if I so far so good and this electricity flows through it so I can make an and gate with the wire so We have the first fundamental logic gate or I can take the same wire and thank you run it in parallel and I can cut one or cut the other and if I connect one of them electricity is still going to flow so if the top one or the bottom one go We’ll have electricity or not okay can’t laugh but if you take my time not it’s gonna basically invert the signal we won’t talk about how we do that let’s just say that you can doing electronics and if your inches in that to think about that how does that happen Google it the first fundamental be something to build so we have three fundamental building blocks we have an ore and we have not I claim that if you connect them in this particular configuration I will have this thing that I am going to call an atom but this Is a half adder because there is not a thing which people call a carry in this takes two bits of information one and two and if they are both one out the acid comes a zero and a one which is a carry if that doesn’t make sense you Google it look up half adder it’s on Wikipedia the important point to take away is two bits of information in one bit of information out oh he had a staring attacks awesome no grief to us yeah so we’re going to take we’re going to take that half adder and I’m going to Shove it inside a box and this is called attraction we do this a lot we do it everything we do every one those o P programming and all these other things I need to take circuit to shove it into a box because we’re going to grow complexity so everybody’s comfortable That that box type your lips the tube things coming in one thing coming out with the carry yes go anchor mentally better I’m gonna stack these things I’m gonna take one put on top of the other now I claim I can have two bits of information coming in and two bits of Information coming out where’s the carrot every bit cool if you don’t understand that look up half adder and second that’s business you know it’s just value already but I would probably want you to represent the numbers if you’re not familiar with why we use hex I challenge you to take I don’t use hex I’m alleged player oh my gosh – binary that’s why confuses by now but I just simply use text and I’ll find him why is that because on standard systems when we first started didn’t make sense we can’t Do a whole lot with a single bed so we added a bunch of bits together it’s basic standard bit so if I take one switch I get two things but keep two switches I get how many things for like three switches look at how many and if I Take four switches 16 so we need at least four to represent decimal which is our natural tendency to count because we’ve got ten of these things right so we have to go up to four bits but if we only go to ten that we use four bits we Wasted some because you just told me we could go up to 16 we don’t want to waste those we wanted the efficient so we use a different representation our number base also call the radix look it up and that number base is basic steam also Called hit by the way on a side note there is a numbered number base or radix called hexa mo which is space 6 which is what I believe a pirate would count in because he has five fingers in a hook so if it negative okay you just told me The computer only that’s one zeroes in sight how do I deal with negative numbers [ __ ] I don’t know how to have a minus sign oh [ __ ] we’re at 4 minutes let’s go so I need to have a clever tricky way of reassigning what the numbers mean in binary so that I can Have negatives there’s this cool thing called ones complement well that kind of sucks because things didn’t line up right look up ones complement then look up two’s complement because we said I can take ones complement and I can fix it so that we can do these cool things By having negative numbers that cancel each other out we out together and that’s where two’s complement comes from I claim with this circuit here we’ll get the two’s complement representation of the number look it up there’s these things called silent spots everybody hates in classes we’re gonna Skip it get off your hat better I claimed it’s a half adder because we didn’t have a carry in so we want to fix that I would claim that the logic mckerrod is an v and it together if a and b are both one then i’m going to get A carry o matter is what I get from that we’re going to shove that into a box because we’re going to extract and go further because how many tell much time we have left by minute fully stacked now I’m gonna take my full adders I’m gonna stack them together this is a Representation of a two-bit I would leave it as an exercise to the reader to extend it to four bit so we can get our orbit microprocessor guess what it looks exactly the same keep stacking so full if you have 4 full adders in a box put Them together you get what is known as a 4-bit seven you have a carry in a 4-bit number on the top 4-bit number on the bottom and out the other end from the answer plus a carry let’s go what I steer you wrong ok we can now represent Numbers kind of inside but I got to steer stuff around and store the processor so how am I gonna do that I have to have a way of serious stuff around we have these things we called luck many come in one comes out I have a Way to choose it so this is kind of like a traffic cop inside I also have to have the opposite I have one come in and I can drive in to other places with these two things call them option edema now he lost me aha because his name is lost Do you get it too much this put together out the other end I can control where data goes you all get the point we’re controlling the flow of information inside the process by the way why does this matter perfect you’re going to get two registers in those matter we start Swinging code and you start programming in assembly which is going to do if you’re gonna write shellcode so shut up if you know what it is just did so logic inside processor in order to not just be a calculator we have to have lunch right we have to be able to be logical Functions on the data we put in it or we have to give them to do charisma tip so we have this thing called alias that’s from the TV show so you take all of this stuff shove it in the ones complement the two’s complement you put it in we are going to Create this thing we call and then not circuit an egg Ninth Circuit says I have data coming in coming out and with those two control lines down there I can either choose to naked or get the not it so I have the ability to do a function So cool let’s go and or with no pasture information comes in clipped out the asking which the control here this is all abstraction that we just built up to I can take data in as it comes out like to choose to do an ad or morning slam Math and logic in that case so this is with the task all I did was stick a MUX on the end which we talked about before I want the data to even be processed on or not processed on that’s what the month is for it that’s a pass line this Board let’s go so I stick all that in the box I get and or chip ALU there did get all of its glory that is basically in essence what you have inside the processor at home now there’s been a Glade there’s this cool thing called propagation play now I don’t have time To talked about because we’re in a hurry so look it up basically it’s agitated takes amount of time to go through all this crap can come out the asset now what you have to Hale you I need to be able to produce input and story then I’ll have my fully fund a computer so I have to have these things called decoders but guess what that’s exactly the same things edema [ __ ] why didn’t you just call it that first but I can decode my decoders and because the decoders up encoders in which case I can Grow the address space and I can go from four minutes to 8-bits 16-bits etc basically this is just that goes so I have flip-flops flip-flops are really cool things that are latches inside the hold information so I can now have not just a machine but I can hold stuff over Time pick your logic combinational are sequential we’re going to talk about some pitches that some computers are because we have to have memory so we’re not just based on the carried out or the state so then we build these thing called registers which are you flip up With the [ __ ] coming in so we have the thing that can tell the information those registers are what you see when you open up like I to probe can we say register whatever that’s didn’t David step back general structure we’re gonna get to this really quickly how much time Brings this is a brainless microprocessor you got to ale you got your memory which we society control coming in you notice the toilet has nothing there [ __ ] this is a brainless microprocessor so we need a brain one so how do I do that I take that I’ve got bumpers on the side that’s The day they’re the program I’ve got a thing called a decoder which digs my instructions but I don’t know how to control it seal switches in the middle so I need to take off the ramp huh we need to go from the one on the top where The control lines of blank the one the bottom will have everything time DC address generation-tts come for program counter you have to be able to step through the steps in our program we saw we can do an increment from an adder so we got that piece we got the MUX you Have a sink over ROM which basically defines all the control signals for what I want this team to actually do I put both together please [Applause] not bad let’s put your process before you a professor want you to manage your money back yeah I got this in ten minutes Where’s the so not a joke a little bit of feedback here cuz I’m pretty cocky but I hope I give you some books maybe some things to look up about basically how it works in in everything subtraction we went from pounding rocks and starting fires to a Playstation [ __ ] How does that happen do you think your average person can tell me how the insides of the PlayStation oh no no and that’s the whole point of restriction is that I’m going to build up to pieces but I would argue as hackers having this fundamental basic knowledge points or What is going to cause a pit full of stuff I will argue with anyone right now everyone say oh there’s no long no longer it needs a program in assembly okay I’ll have the argument with you or I’ll have been edifying discussion with you where you’ll teach me stuff that I Don’t know and I’ll change my mind because that’s the other thing that people in this community need to be willing to do you need to be able to change your mind if somebody explains something to you that makes more sense and I think there’s too many people that get fixated on their ideas I want everybody in this audience right now to find one person next to them is not somebody they know [Applause] okay [Applause] that longer 30 seconds [Applause] all right all right let’s go focus focus focus [Applause] okay bring it back in people ringing come on hello hello hi all right thank You okay where’s that we’re just having this in is [ __ ] awesome because that’s what that’s funny to me okay those of you came here thinking I’m gonna sit with my laptop unless you’re doing CTF or you’re doing my challenge but this is the best part about my challenge CTF you know you’re gonna sit in isolation with your team with your head down your laptop and you’re infecting them via my channel here to talk to the people you have a choice so it’s all about the people for me by the way I just morbid curiosity how did the Teleprompter people do with that that monstrosity awesome awesome so how do they deal with that a foreign language yes [Applause] so that’s it for example yes we have fun here DEFCON I encourage you to challenge the speakers if somebody singing something here what do you think that [ __ ] will talk to okay challenge People that’s what we’re here for I want people gentlemen I want you to come so I will prepare you for 101 if you go the opening ceremonies tomorrow so like I said usually Thursday was our fun day we were joking around it’s kind of evolved into Friday’s anaconda so This is a this is a technically DEFCON we haven’t officially open the conference yet but I think that’s a cut so it is it is now it is now but it wasn’t so after this talk by the way there will be a one-on-one panel where we’re going To interact with you guys more info click more and then tomorrow opening ceremonies I will talk more specifically about the badge I mean some of the production and some of the problems we had and some of the craziness in the program but I kind of like to give a Reward to the pumps that make the effort coming to the one-on-one stuff and talk just look slightly about some of the challenge stuff that may give you a little bit of a leg up if you’re competing with other people how many people in this room are actually working On some aspect of the fun world right now or had or thought about it okay I hope this kind of fun it’s a little bit painful at times so let’s talk a little bit about the map that you see in the program if you look at the program on The second page where it my blue mug is that there’s a there’s some equations that everybody see those everybody see that the Masterson sir how many of you look today he would like hell no I didn’t come to Def Con to freaking do mad hell no how many of you Are familiar the rest let’s go whooping alpha I’m going to be trying to put that equation lean up Wolfram Alpha how many bees guy with what’s up talk to my look at now second thing it was designed to something you guys see what I’m doing I’m talking about an aspect of the Challenge hopefully there is a there’s a way of representing equations basically the first polish notation like this it’s not it’s really cold RPN first started reversed poor sanitation it’s the way those of us who are old like me you can put holy crap I just realized I just Really know but I just realized you were like a foot taller than last year stand up for a second those who do not know this young man right here this is one of the smartest kids I’ve ever met he came to Def Con what two years ago Was your first month before he was like this tall his dad brings him and he Britain he brings his dad a tank and this is why I love that pond this kinda stuff he was correcting speakers he was correcting one joke and and me and stuff like that in a Juice yourself is he’s gonna go put those of you who were like have like these track programs for hiring people like when they’re going this is new to me he’s a nice guy so okay so I did that I did a puzzle badge for a conference called The Gathering For gardener how many of you know Martin Garnett if you don’t know who Martin Gardner is he is the father of what we call recreational mathematics it was also like the champion used to write for Scientific American doing the puzzle stuff and most of you don’t totally type Stuff like in the newspaper or magazine he probably into content somehow he’s a pioneer at that conference basically I found we had two camps of people we had mathematicians we had professional magicians which isn’t really interesting next and I met this guy comes up to me and was introducing myself in apparently I mean you know what xkcd is a boy so xkcd had written a comic strip about the school this kind of rope maybe came up to me and he he had heard that I was like this puzzle guy and I give up his poster he goes I made this thing and it Got a lot of press because xkcd featured in almost like this website he’s a Def Con I’m gonna give you credit for it I’m gonna make sure people directors so there is a tool and I have a challenge for people dis conference find the xkcd comic the tool then the Name of the author before the end of Def Con then come to the 10:57 room and tell that information to me and I will have something for you that is me giving kind of like a mini challenge to the folks don’t want to get hard or into the Competition it shouldn’t take you very much time as you roll to find but in his algorithm he is able to put in a number and generate function equations now you’re sitting yourself oh this is passe this is easy I have lots of processing power now I will just do an exhaustive Search [ __ ] are any of you don’t understand how complexity grows that is not what this guy is going and discover in this point bring it up for real I’m convinced someone out here that’s in hearing what I’m saying right now is going to look at that and is going to Get inspired in a way to use that hungry I have an intuitive feeling that that particular algorithm was applicable to some other aspects of what we do as hackers that I haven’t quite put my thumb on that and if one of you finds it just give me a nod or something I don’t care but I really believe somebody out there is working on a problem or working on an expert or working on something in security this particular algorithm with I don’t know what it is okay I am about dead on my feet this is what I have for You guys for 101 I want to know if you guys have any questions for me I’m pretty tough you guys are new to Def Con ask me anything you want like hey I’m ready yeah what type of IC on that is on key to us and what type of chips on Patch who knows what is it it’s an Intel court d mm what does that mean it means it’s x86 compatible yeah any other questions before I fall over and we set up a panel no no really no question I’m give me carte blanche like why do you wear those Shoes why are you wearing rot certainly none sir yeah yelling you mean like this oh the lanyards so so I have a question for you why would I make different lanyards and then just give it all out of the picture meatspace DDoS this is meets me after the after That so generally people that compete in my competition tend to write up descriptions of what they had to do they solve the problems and I guarantee somebody will have done that so this is confession sorry guys I usually count on them doing that so I don’t have to I [Applause] Really want to thank you guys for coming out I hope you yeah yeah go okay so thank you guys for coming oh and these are awesome Gunnar glasses that I love so thank you guys for coming [Applause] all right patch people this is silly who Won comm make sure to check it out and we watched a talk or basically listen to a talk of lost taken fundamentals and cutting through abstraction and I’m fairly certain that I’ve already covered this talk on this channel so yeah alright so um the TPS are not going Doing too well right so the service is still very playable too sure but also the CAO amount it’s not too great yet I will keep pushing it further to the limit and see when the server becomes unplayable hmm yeah because this will be the hardware for for quite some time now And if it can’t even handle the the cows that are easily vulnerable I might have have to look into that and see if I can if I can tweak something to to make the server yeah more stable even if I don’t moderate it and if I am inactive for Some years and some people try to like cure the TPS I want to still provide some playable user experience here so let’s see how that goes and yeah thanks for watching Video Information
