Hello everyone my name is pixaris and welcome back to the minecraft survival guide i hope you’re all having a good day in today’s episode i want to start an automatic wool farm for all 16 colors of wool so we have a couple of sheep who’ve been down here in the cow pen Getting familiar with the cows for a little while and today i want to move those into a farm that will automatically shear the sheep for us and we can talk about dispensers and all of the fun stuff that they can do but first of all we need to figure something out Because i don’t have a way of getting green dye in this world yet the wandering trader has been passed a couple of times and might have sold us cactus when he did but unfortunately i didn’t buy any at the time and so right now i don’t have any cactus in this World that i can use to make green dye because we haven’t found a desert it’s been 35 episodes we only found a mountain yesterday and i still haven’t found a desert so you know what it’s time to saddle up the mule once again and it’s time to head out on an Adventure now we’re not gonna do the entire thing on camera because of course exploring this world is fun but we’ve done our fair share of that yesterday so i’m going to look around the world for a little while we’re going to drag viola on this journey with us i’m gonna cut Most of this out unless we find something interesting but i’ll catch up with you folks when we’ve managed to find a desert well it’s been a long old journey and i’ve stumbled through a bunch of really interesting stuff including some spectacular mountain generations some appropriately wacky a village generation And a couple of pillager watch towers that i had to avoid we’ve traversed the world and we’re ready to show off the desert are you ready folks are you ready to see what this desert looks like yeah it’s not that impressive i think we do have a little bit more desert over Here in this direction that’s just disappearing into the render distance right now but this is effectively a large beach and i’d actually kind of been duped by a couple of larger beaches that ended up bordering on savannah biomes and various other things but this one right here actually has the Advantage of being really close to a coral reef look at these wonderful structures of coral underneath the surface we will come back to this in future so that we can take a good look at the coral reef and if you want the coordinates for this we are 2600 blocks Out on the x-axis and about 2 000 in the negative on the z-axis so we’ve traveled quite a way but thankfully we brought a bed with us so we can sleep on the way here typically you will find deserts adjacent to other warm biomes like jungles or savannas warm oceans also Count as we can see from the evidence of this coral reef and it looks like not many of the other warm biomes around here are connected because deserts are dry whereas the jungles and so forth are humid so the temperature and humidity don’t necessarily line up when the game Is choosing where to place these biomes the main thing you’ll notice about deserts aside from the abundance of sand everywhere is the local flora we have some dead bushes around here which you can obtain using shears if you want to if you break them they just break down Into sticks some of the time and usually don’t give you all that much the other thing is of course cacti and we can take these home to grow back at our base so i’m going to grab a couple of them cacti are naturally kind of prickly and if you Stand too close to them you will take a little bit of damage to your armor the other thing to be aware of is that cacti can destroy items so if you throw a torch onto one like so as you can see that torch disappeared and has been permanently destroyed so be very careful Not to throw your diamond tools or anything precious on the ground because cacti are effectively like lava they are one of the trash cans of minecraft if you want to get rid of some stuff like these wheat seeds just throw them against the cactus they’ll be gone Instantly be very careful not to throw anything valuable onto them there are of course some other things you can look out for in deserts we have some sand rabbits down here a couple of dust bunnies who are just going to be hopping around the place they’re a different Variant than the ones you’ll find in meadows and tiger biomes and so forth deserts also have a couple of structures to them they can generate desert villages and you can also find desert temples although we may have to locate a larger desert to find a desert temple Because there doesn’t seem to be room for one on this little outcropping of beach and i think this is actually oh no this is a desert biomo case so there are some sections where the sand from a beach biome and the desert biome will overlap a little bit looks like we may Have a little bit more desert over here and a shipwreck that is barely a shipwreck actually this this one seems to have just run aground on the sandbar here and just kind of sat there tempting as it is to raid that one i think we Will leave it for now but i think we’re also going to bring back one sea pickle which are the little cucumber looking things that you’ll find growing on some of these corals we’ll come back for a heftier dose of sea pickles a little bit later on when we come back to discuss Coral reefs but right now i’m going to take the coordinates of this area and we’re probably going to head on home i kind of explored in a circular fashion and we’ve ended up headed back towards the center of the world in this direction where we can see the desert Extends until it reaches a jungle there is also a patch here of red sand which is normally found in badlands biomes with slightly more interesting generation than this this is actually a little bit flat and disappointing for our first badlands encounter but as you can see this is technically a wooded Badlands it’s just a microbiome here within the desert biome where it’s decided to generate a little bit of that stuff but we’ll cover badlands in future as well once we find them because they’re pretty spectacular to look at we can also see from the azalea over here That underground in this area we would have a lush cave so it’s kind of rare to see a tree in the desert like this but given that azaleas mark the locations of lush caves it’s a pretty useful sign at least now we know where that desert is We can establish a nether portal to head back out there in future but i’m not gonna do that right away we’re just gonna head home for the moment and we’ll link it up to the nether hub once we can be a little bit more confident about the Location of the nether terrain on our way back one other thing i will note near to some of the pillager outposts that have spawned out here on the plains i’ve stumbled upon a flower forest and these are really great locations for gathering any dye colours you may not Already have so we’re going to bring home one of each of the flowers around here we’ve got some rose bushes we have some lily of the valley some tulips which can occur in four different colors i believe but as you can see with all the bees buzzing around and all of the Flowers everywhere these are the perfect biomes for sourcing honey from if you want to get honey in the early stages of the game you’re probably going to find a lot of bees working around here and you can bring the nests back home if you are so inclined we got some oxide daisies Over here as well let’s bring home a couple of those we’ve got some corn flour which provides blue much like lapis does there are lilacs which are these two tall plants with these slightly slimmer flowers on you may also find peonies which are the ones with the larger rounder flowers i’m going to Throw all of these into viola’s inventory for now but a lot of these are going to be very useful in getting hold of the dyes we need and with that diversion handled let’s head on home so thanks to that detour in the flower forest we now actually have all but two I think of the different types of flowers that we can get in minecraft we’ve got the two tall flowers over here represented by the rose bush the lilac the peony and the sunflower and those are kind of interesting and different the sunflowers by the way always face East where the sun rises so not really a whole lot we can do about that but we also have all four tulips which we got from the flower forest we’ve got red poppies and yellow dandelions the other flowers that make light gray dye along with the white tulip are the oxide daisy And the azia blue it alliums will make magenta cornflowers will make blue and lily of the valley makes white all the way over here on this end of the scale so those are all of the flowers we’re able to get right now there is a blue orchid that produces light blue dye Which we can only find in swamps and as of right now i haven’t encountered a swamp so i think we’ll probably cover those a little bit later there is also the weather rose which is a lot more difficult to get because it involves fighting the wither which is an optional Boss in minecraft and we don’t really need to get that far yet that produces black dye which we can get from squid that will spawn in the rivers and oceans around here and i believe i have some of that in the house already so with some Squid ink and the dyes from all of these flowers plus a little bit more white dye made using bone meal we can cover basically every color in the minecraft diet spectrum with the exception of green that is where sea pickles and cactus come in if you end up cooking a Sea pickle in a furnace which i’ll just do with a plank of wood like so it actually gives you lime green dye there we go we got lime dye out of that one if we want the regular green dye that is where cactus comes in cactus can only be Planted on sand or red sand so we need to make sure that we’ve got a block of that around and honestly i’m gonna move it slightly further away just so viola doesn’t accidentally walk into it if we smelt cactus in a furnace so if i cook this down that will turn into regular Green dye and from there we can combine it with white dye to make lime dye it should also be noted that cactus when you want to grow it is a little bit temperamental you can’t place it on a block with a block adjacent to it because the spines of the cactus don’t Like brushing up against other stuff and if we place another plank here for example that’s gonna break the cactus we’re gonna use that mechanic later to actually farm cactus as it grows but for now if we want to grow this cactus organically we’re gonna have to place it A block away from any other solid blocks you can place carpet around the outside though and that might be necessary a little bit later for now let’s run back to our house and get some ink and some bone meals so that we can make some of The gray dye range and we’ll also take a look at how we can reproduce some of these flowers now bedrock edition players will have the luxury of being able to spam a flower with bone meal and it will produce other flowers of the same type on the ground around it but on Java edition we can only do that with the four two block tall flowers so the rose bushes if we right click those with a little bit of bone meal will produce more rose bushes and each of those being a two tall flower will produce two dyes so it’s Actually really nice to have a large supply of those we can get a bunch of magenta from the lilacs here we can get a bunch of pink from the peonies and we can get yellow from the sunflowers and the way combining these dyes works is a very similar to the way pigments combine In real life so if we combine blue and red for example we get purple something which isn’t available as a flower in the wild the other thing that isn’t available as a flower is if you combine blue and green and you’ll get cyan dye and i really like cyan as a Color palette so we’ll probably explore that a lot later in the series as mentioned before we can break some bone meal down into white dye which we can also get with the lily of the valley but that will turn red dye into pink that will turn green dye into lime green that Will turn blue into light blue and there are a couple of other things that can react with the white dye if we turn some of these ink sacs into black dye then we can combine two of those to make gray which also isn’t available as a flower If you add another white in there you do get more and you get light gray dyes so you can combine light gray dye but once again that’s available from a lot of the different flowers that you’ll find out there the white looking flowers are more often than not gonna provide you with Some light gray and so by combining all of these different dyes in different ways and crafting them we can end up with a whole range of dyes and i’m just gonna craft each one over here so that we can have an example of each type of Dye we’re gonna have to wait for this cacti to grow another stage before we can get the green dye we need for cyan because right now i need to keep that in here we’ve also got some brown dye thanks to cocoa beans which are what produces brown and if you run low on Blue we can always convert some of the lapis that we found on the ground into blue dye as well in this case that’s how we’re going to be making purple to throw in here and we’re pretty much full up on the dyes except for cyan which would go Over here there also isn’t really anything you can do to speed up the growth of cacti it cannot be grown using bone meal it basically acts the same as sugar cane except it needs to be planted on sand and it doesn’t need water around It to grow so now that we have all of these dyes we’re going to start doing some fun stuff with sheep because of course we’ve been sharing sheep for white wool this entire time and you can combine white wool with a dye in your inventory to get a dyed block of that Color wool but you can also dye the sheep so you end up with a sheep that will constantly produce that color of wool and when the wool grows back it’ll remain that color which means we’re gonna need to get some sheep out of this Pen and i think we should be able to do that there we go if we pull them on a lead a little way that’ll take a couple of tries sometimes because you usually end up pogoing the sheep out of the pen a little bit and just be wary of getting Too high up because if they end up falling then they can take some fall damage but this white sheep over here who we can dye another color if we want to is going to be our test subject for an automatic wool farm that’s going to basically shear the sheep every time it Eats a piece of grass we’ll need a couple of things for this we all need some redstone components notably we will need a hopper minecart for each sheep we want to do this with we’ll need an observer and we’ll need to craft ourselves a dispenser a dispenser is Crafted with seven cobblestone in an arch like that a redstone dust there you’ll already see this becomes a dropper but if we place a bow in the center there it will become a dispenser and here’s a brief description of the difference between a dropper and a dispenser a dropper is designed to drop Items as the name suggests any item we put in here let’s do this for example with this set of shears will be spat out when we activate it with a redstone signal if i attach a button to the side of this it will spit out the shears like So dispensers will do this with most items and the dispenser has a circular opening where the dropper has more of like a triangular shaped one like so if we attach a button to the dispenser we throw in some items like cobblestone for example it’ll just spit them out in the Same way that a dropper does but a dispenser has a certain action that it can perform with certain tools for example if we put some shears in and press this it’s going to attempt to use the shears on something in front of it and as a rule of thumb this typically Only occurs with items or tools that have a right-click action to them there are some exceptions to this it will not strip wood for you if you put a diamond x in here for example if i put that there it’s just going to try and spit The axe out and it spits it out into the block in front of it but if i place the dispenser here in front of the sheep let’s push the sheep a little bit forward so make sure it’s in contact with the dispenser we attach a button to That and we use that there we go it ends up shearing the sheep automatically in this case only producing one wool but it will be the same as you shearing the sheep it will produce between one and three dispensers can also do other things like start fires with flint and Steel like so there we go they can bone meal any crops that are growing in the space in front of them if a dispenser has a bucket of lava or a bucket of water on the inside you can dispense that into the surrounding area and powering the dispenser again will Retract the water back into the bucket but what we’re going to focus on today is the shearing behavior of dispensers and we’re going to use that to automatically shear some sheep now sheep will replenish their wool as we know by eating a block of grass if they hang Around a block of grass for long enough if there isn’t dirt there if it’s a grass block like this they’ll bend down and they’ll eat the grass the grass will revert to dirt and it will replenish the sheep’s wool like so and there we go what a wonderful test subject an Excellent demonstration what we can do is point an observer into that block so that when the grass block turns to dirt because the sheep has eaten the grass that’s going to trigger the observer and what the observer can do is power a dispenser right here if we put a solid Block behind this observer and we put some redstone dust on top of it then the observer will power that block it’ll power the redstone dust the dispenser will fire and that will shear the sheep standing on this block we can do a quick example here by replacing the grass Block with a dirt block and there you go it’s fired the shears in the dispenser using a dispenser this way will use up durability on the shears but only if they are successful in performing that right click action and shearing the sheep so if the dispenser fails to fire You’ll notice we got 34 durability on this right now it fired still 34 durability so if the dispenser fails we don’t lose any durability on the shears making this 100 efficient the dispenser also has nine slots in it meaning that we can put nine sets of shears in here And we’ll be able to shear the sheep for potentially 2 000 or so shears before it runs out of durability on every single set and thanks to the fact that we have an iron farm right now shears are pretty cheap so we should be able to fill up Any dispensers we rig up in this way with full sets of shias keeping the sheep inside of here seems like a simple enough proposition but we’ve got to remember that the grass needs other grass around it in order to regrow onto a dirt block so we’ll need To make sure that when our sheep is standing in here we don’t place any blocks that will end up blocking light to this grass and reverting it into dirt like if i place a cobblestone block here after a while that grass block underneath there is going to revert into Dirt because it’s completely blocking sky access and sunlight getting to it from above there we go after a few seconds it’s reverted into a dirt block and so we need to make sure that a transparent block is placed above it so that it can have light access to it and It will revert back into a grass block allowing the sheep to eat the grass block again this can still be done underground it doesn’t require actual sunlight but it will require some block light in the form of a torch or a glowstone block or something like that To make sure that this block will perpetually be refilled as a grass block by the grass blocks all around it getting the sheep to walk in here is going to be a simple enough action because we have plenty of leads available to us we can just drag it in Over the dispenser and it might take a couple more blocks bridging out this way so that it will walk on in give it a couple of nudges if you want to maybe put a trapdoor there but there we go our sheep is now well and truly trapped Inside this thing the problem is the collection mechanism because there is a solid block right there and even though the dispenser works pretty well the wall is just standing there on the block not being collected by anything and that is really where hopper minecarts come in you might remember from our video about The sugarcane farm that hopper mine carts can pick up items that are on top of a full solid block where hoppers unfortunately cannot so if we end up placing a hopper minecart underneath here like so that will actually pull the wool through the block and as you can see the wool And some dirt is now inside of the minecart hopper we can go one step further than that by having a hopper underneath the hopper minecart which we’ll have to craft again now there we go and every time this sheep gets sheared it’s going to output into this barrel thanks to the hulper minecart Being picked up by the hopper and the hopper depositing the items in the barrel so that’s a nice easy straightforward design for this but we can go one step further to compact it if we want to because the hopper minecart can actually occupy the same space as This dirt block if we do a little bit of shenanigans with a piston for that we just need to dig down a couple of blocks we’ll place our output barrel there we’ll place a hopper there and we’ll get another hopper minecart to put on top of this once we place the hopper minecart There we can break the minecart rail very carefully that’ll end up in the barrel right here and then we’re gonna place a couple of dirt blocks over the top of it like so we’ll place another block there so that we can use that to push this dirt block down on top of the Hopper minecart and since the hopper mine cut is an entity and not a block it can occupy the same space as a block now when the sheep’s wool ends up on this block the hopper minecart pulls it on through and it immediately gets deposited in this barrel in front of it And with an observer detecting what’s happening with that block a dispenser on top of that making sure that the sheep gets sheared and a little bit of redstone dust behind we have a pretty effective automatic wool farm with there being 16 different colors of dye in minecraft we just need 16 different Colors of sheep and we’ll be able to farm every single color of wool automatically that way and i think of course the wandering trader decides to show up now i think we’re going to build that somewhere around here somewhere that we can collect the wool from it Nice and easily please tell me you’re selling cactus he’s selling cactus green that is not a bad call today it is actually really helpful to be able to buy some more green dye because that way i can focus on replanting the cactus instead of just waiting for it to grow And then smelting it right away so there we go we got ourselves some green dye we can start dyeing all of these sheep different colors we’ll breed a couple more and i’m going to build up this farm on a live stream but we’ll come back and Do the final module of the farm together just so we can clarify how this all works hey folks welcome back so i figured we could build up a bunch of this stuff and then with one module left to build we’re going to build this together on camera But first i need to load the orange and yellow sheep into these two modules over here and you’ll notice here i have a red and a yellow sheep along with a white one who’s probably just going to be left over we could dye this one orange Directly if we wanted to but i figured i might as well show you that if we gather up a little bit of wheat here and breed the orange and yellow sheep together there is a chance for their offspring to come out as a mix of those two colors in Much the same way as combining the two dyes in your crafting interface would end up with orange dye and naturally the young sheep is going to want to eat grass until he grows up so what better place to do that than inside of the sheep farm we’re actually going to lead This one over to the orange module we’ll drop him in through the top like so and there we go nice and easy the farm will be a perfect place for him to grow up until eventually he becomes an adult from eating all of that grass and the System should start working and in the meantime as you can tell he’s eating the grass in there but the dispensers aren’t going to take any durability damage off of the shears i’ve been putting trapdoors on the top of each of these modules of the farm so that if we want To we can open up the trap door and dye the sheep different colors because there’s no reason that all of these sheep have to stay these colors aside from the fact that we’ve got the colored glass around all of them but for example if we wanted a whole bunch of yellow Wool for a project this wouldn’t have to be the only yellow sheep that we relied on we could open up the trapdoors on top of any of these dye the sheep different colors and we’d end up with a bunch of yellow wool in each of these barrels I should note that making all of the different colors of stained glass is actually a little bit different to dyeing wool blocks because wall blocks require one die per block you can only make one wool at a time this way and you’d use a whole bunch of cyan dye if You wanted to make a whole bunch of cyan wool out of white wool in the case of glass though you actually circle the dye in glass and you make eight blocks of it at once with a single die which makes glass a lot more straightforward and a Lot cheaper to make in terms of die cost now like i said for this final module of the farm here which is going to be the module with the red sheep in it i thought we could build this together so i’ve left myself a couple of supplies in This barrel this barrel is the output it’s just gonna have the hopper facing into it like so we’re gonna surround that with dirt blocks and we’re gonna put three dirt blocks on either side like so we’re gonna place our observer facing into the block above where the Hopper is right now we’re gonna place a rail on top of that and on top of that rail is where our hopper minecart goes then we break the rail so that the hopper minecart comes to rest in this block the rail will end up harmlessly Inside of the barrel here then we grab a piston and something to activate it with we make sure there is a dirt block above this hopper minecart and we place a block up there to attach the piston to facing downward and to activate the piston with like so we press that button The dirt block gets pushed down onto the hopper minecart we clear up everything we’ve just used to move that around and we can put a final dirt block in here above the barrel and unlike chests barrels can open even if there’s a solid block above them which means that we can Access our wool from here at any time now on top of the observer we’re going to place our dispenser we’re going to make sure there is a redstone dust on a solid block behind this and once the farm has started producing red wool we’re actually going to swap that out With a block of red wool so that it doesn’t get easily broken if we do a bit more terraforming around here that’s what i’ve done with the other modules of the farm with the exception of these two that hadn’t started producing wool until just now around the outside of here We’re going to build up a wall of red stained glass and we’ll put one stained glass right there now all we should need to do is lead the sheep into the farm and it should be ready to start producing wool and yes i did manage to steal a couple more leads from the Wandering trader and his llamas there we go as long as we stand in this back right hand corner the sheep just wanders into the farm works its way down in there we can detach the lead and we’ll pick it up from here we’ll put a trap Door up there and now every time the sheep eats the grass inside of here once the grass regrows over that dirt block it should be able to refresh its wool and the system will shear it as long as we put some shears in the dispenser of Course there we go that’s going to be primed and ready and this one’s already got plenty this one’s got one there as well and since the iron farm has been producing the entire time i’ve made the last few videos it’s looking pretty healthy in there this is definitely far Outstripped our iron mining video at the time of this recording and that’s with just a single module iron farm so really if you build anything a little bit more spectacular than this you’re going to find yourself with more iron than you know what to do with in the single Player world so if we want to the trap door can open up to give us access to the dispenser as long as we can look past the sheep in order to do it yes there we go we can craft a few more shears and since each set of shears has 238 durability it’ll shear them over two thousand times and since on average we’re going to get two wool per shear that means like upwards of four thousand wool before the whole system shuts down permanently alternatively you could do what i’ve done here and leave a hopper facing downwards into this dispenser From which we can simply throw in a bunch of shears once i crafted a few we could even craft some extras and chuck them into the hopper like so and that would load up the dispenser for us also gives us a slightly larger window to access the dispenser from if we need to This black wall module is the one i built first and as you can see we’ve already got a pretty decent amount of wool even though we’ve used it to decorate the backdrop and either side of the barrel here so i’m just marking off where each wool is because you’ll notice That all of the sheep in java edition at least and this is slightly different in bedrock edition look like plain white sheep when they’ve had their wool sheared on bedrock condition the white spots there and the sheared sections will actually correspond to the colour that the sheep’s wool is when it’s fully Grown but since the sheep are getting sheared pretty much instantaneously when they regrow their wool it’s kind of difficult to tell if you don’t give some kind of color-coded system to these surroundings so i’m going to spend the next little while making sure all of these dispensers are topped up with nine Sets of shears and maybe doing a little bit more decoration so that we have fewer exposed grass blocks around here but bear in mind that we do need to keep the eight blocks surrounding the sheep the ones where which don’t have the dispenser on basically grass at all Times to allow the maximum opportunity for grass to regrow on that central block where the sheep is standing so we can’t really get too fancy with the decorations here we want to make sure that this is optimized so that whenever the grass grows back the sheep is able To eat it more or less immediately whenever it feels hungry basically looks like our first red wool has just come in via this section of the sheep farm so we can now use this to make all of the carpets and banners and decorative stuff that we want to i’m gonna probably build Up around here around the back like i have done we’re going to swap this block here out for some red wool and we’ll place the redstone dust on there so we know that’s going to be the redstone for that section of the farm looks like the orange and the yellow sheep have just Started producing as well so with that the redstone section of the farm is well and truly decorated we can decorate a little bit more around the outside but i think as far as this video goes that’s where i’m going to leave it for today a nice colorful sheep farm here on the Hillside perfect way to wrap up this episode so that’s where we’re gonna leave it for today thank you so much for watching this episode of the minecraft survival guide my name has been pixariffs don’t forget to leave a like on this video if you enjoyed it Subscribe if you want to see more and i’ll
