Hey everyone how’s it going fireborn here and today I want to talk about Minecraft’s updated usage guidelines this is the most stupid thing I’ve read since dreams apology for cheating so thank you very much Minecraft Community once again in my opinion these usage guidelines are dangerous and harmful to The Minecraft Community as well as to The Gaming Community as a whole should we allow this to set a precedent I’m going to be giving my interpretation of these guidelines and highlighting some of the parts that I think are important if you think I missed out on anything important or misinterpreted anything Feel free to let me know in the comments now let’s talk about their all uses section this is one of the first things they say in the usage guidelines that in relation to all uses permitted or otherwise all permissions and consents are given by us at our discretion and May be revoked at any time if we think that it is appropriate to do so or we don’t like what you are doing so these are guidelines they describe what is permitted and what is not permitted but they say regarding what is permitted we can just revoke that consent at any time If we don’t like what you’re doing so what’s the point in these guidelines if you can just revoke the permissions that you’re giving for virtually any reason so that’s pretty stupid in my opinion the next thing I want to talk about is the essential guideline section where They say if you are using any part of any name any part of our brand or any of our assets then you must prominently include the disclaimer similar to the following not an official Minecraft product service event slash Etc not approved by or associated with mojing or Microsoft on your product listing Description website or webpage and all other related material reals so just something to keep in mind that if you’re making a YouTube video it’s got to go in the description the naming guidelines are quite possibly one of the most silly sections so if you’re a YouTube content Creator if you’re a streamer if you’re hosting a Minecraft event if you have a Minecraft server pay close attention to this they say you may use the Minecraft name in a secondary name secondary title or description and they give some bullet points of guidelines you have to follow In order to do that but what does secondary mean they clarify this by saying that you may not use the Minecraft name as the primary or dominant name or title to help you they’ve given the following examples kodaba miners a Minecraft server for Redstone builds we’re cool with this Minecraft the ultimate codobus server for Redstone we’re not cool with this so what they’re telling me is that if you title some something related to Minecraft you cannot use Minecraft as the first word in the title at least that’s the only way that I can wrap my Head around this in some cases I understand this like if a company or an individual is trying to pass off something is being official but these guidelines also apply to creators these guidelines also apply to server owners and event organizers they can’t put Minecraft as the first word in the title Of their event of their YouTube video why wouldn’t Minecraft be the primary or dominant part of that title if it’s a Minecraft event or video it should be the primary or dominant part of that title so to me this is absolutely insane this part on personal use is about Defining what is personal and what is commercial use so they say if you decide you want to share your Creation with the community you may do so but when you decide to to share your content with the community whether you plan to make money Off of it or not you are doing what we consider to be a commercial thing therefore you must follow the commercial use guidelines how is it a commercial thing if there’s no profit being made let me read the definition of commercial one concerned with or engaged in Commerce it’s not two making or intended to make a profit it’s also not you are free to Define this as commercial if you want it just means you’re [ __ ] wrong if someone just posts a screenshot of Minecraft to the Minecraft Community forums that is not commercial use and They say in the commercial use section commercial use means any uses of our name brand or assets that you use and share with others regardless of whether you receive payment or provide it for free this can be through video and streams you create merchandise you make Or even a server you host and this part gets to me we may change this definition as time goes by but for now we hope that this helps you understand what you can and can’t do helping you and other fans like you do more no I I don’t find it Helpful to my understanding of these guidelines that corporate entities redefine words to mean things that they don’t this part about domain names and websites I think is mostly okay but one thing I found interesting was that if you use any part of their name in your domain name then your website must only Relate to the Minecraft game brand or assets in a fair reasonable and appropriate way which they don’t Define and not to other third-party games so if you use Minecraft in your domain name don’t talk about any other video games and also don’t allow any third-party advertising to do harm to their brand This is something that appears a lot in these guidelines make sure not to harm the brand they’re not very clear what that means but okay I’ll do my best not to harm the brand and here’s the section for Content creators I’m so excited to look at this so this is mostly Concerning people who make ad revenue from content creation Now the first point they make is already in my opinion problematic they say you may put footage of our game on YouTube twitch or any other website and make money from them so long as all videos in their entirety Are free to view for example there is no paywall or other charge to view the videos now because of the fact that they say other charge my interpretation is that you cannot put videos of Minecraft behind subscribers only members only Etc so if you are a twitch streamer and your Vods are subscribers only make sure none of those vods are Minecraft and this point might be the most insane point in the entire document at least for me as a content creator they say you’re allowed to put footage of the game on YouTube twitch or any other website and make Money from them so long as you add enough of your own content to the video or stream to make it reasonable for you to make money through someone watching it what the [ __ ] does that mean this is so up to individual interpretation that it’s meaningless there are reaction Content creators who will throw up someone else’s video fall asleep go to McDonald’s come back and turn off the stream and then monetize it there are also content creators who only do hour-long video essays that take months to make then there are creators who post video of gameplay and that game gameplay Can be entertaining but is that gameplay unique enough that the Minecraft team thinks it should be allowed to be monetized who knows the only recommendation they give is that you can add your own audio commentary to footage of your gameplay that apparently makes it more acceptable what about gameplay that doesn’t necessitate audio Commentary what about speedruns what about challenge runs what about people sharing their builds as they have been doing in Minecraft since it released one of the First videos that I put on YouTube was a Minecraft roller coaster that video went viral and got millions of views it was one of the first viral Minecraft videos ever it did not contain audio commentary Minecraft became the most popular game in history in large part due to content creators and now the Minecraft team is turning around and dictating to content creators how they should make their content this is absolutely insane keep in mind that this Is applying to your own footage that you record I would understand if this kind of restriction applied to reaction content for example but it’s applying to your own footage as far as I’m concerned this is just a giant middle finger to content creators and in my opinion this Kind of thing is dangerous because it can set the precedent that gaming companies should tell the content creators what they can and can’t monetize on different platforms this is insanely [ __ ] stupid so this part here is just absolutely insane as well you place any title card end credits Sponsorship notices and other call outs outside of the actual game content I interpret this as meaning if you are doing a shout out you must not have gameplay footage in the background even if it’s a Minecraft left video the other part is worse sponsors and any call outs Must be suitable for children and minors and must not cause harm for the brand the thing that’s so problematic about this is that what is suitable for children is up to interpretation there are people who think that children should not be exposed to transgender or gay people and what if my community is 18 plus why would I not be allowed to run an 18 plus sponsorship in an 18 plus community and once again what does harm to the brand mean it’s up to their interpretation they can make it mean whatever they want so this part is just absolutely ridiculous and they provide a Scenario of an appropriate way to post and monetize your content you create a video with your own unique content and commentary and upload it to a site such as YouTube and make money by allowing advertising around the video we’re cool cool with this wow thanks for the permission to upload videos to YouTube And monetize them but the idea that there should be commentary in YouTube videos do you even watch YouTube videos some of them don’t have commentary lots of them don’t have commentary and that’s okay it’s a part of the platform this is just so incredibly [ __ ] stupid this Part on in-person events I also really don’t like they make the Restriction that the event must be limited to no more than approximately 150 participants what do you mean approximately if you’re going to set a hard cap of 150 participants why do you add the term approximately the vagueness of these Guidelines is insane and the reason they give for this limitation is that events with more than 150 participants tend to be commercialized and sponsored by companies and I’ve watched so many gaming tournaments over the year is like Grassroots melee tournaments for example those events were awesome and it was so Upsetting to me when Nintendo decided to shut some of these tournaments down why is Minecraft deciding to be the next Nintendo they say you may not accept sponsorships for the purposes of profit they say the theme of the event must be appropriate for all ages again all ages In my opinion very much up to interpretation and this is the absolute and best part of the section where they give an example of an in-person event that would be allowed posting a casual Meetup in your favorite pizza place to talk about and play Minecraft we’re cool With this wow thanks for the permission to go to a pizza place with my friends and talk about Minecraft the fact that this even needs to be said speaks volumes about how insane these guidelines are and this is the servers and hosting section playing Minecraft With others is one of the best way ways to play walk off basically they give some generic regulations that people must own genuine copies of the game and that you can make money by charging for access to your server and that’s all great my problem is here regardless of How you choose to make money to support your server you may only do so if all servers entitlements in advertising are suitable for audiences of all ages and keep in mind they don’t describe how much money your server has to make before these guidelines apply so if I’m Accepting some small donations to pay for the server costs my understanding is that this applies that the server has to be all ages now they give some examples of things that they would consider not all ages but these are just examples there are almost certainly other things that they might consider inappropriate For children what are those things who the [ __ ] knows just make sure that those things aren’t on your server the other thing is that your server cannot harm the Minecraft brand once again not sure what that means but do your best everyone I love this part in short don’t Do evil things to your players and you should be fine it’s like having a community of adults without kids in it and talking about adult things is that evil alright so that’s going to be the extent of what I’m covering today the rest of it is just some corporate BS we Want to empower you to create and share I don’t find it very empowering as a content creator knowing that my content might be removed just because they don’t like what I’m doing so I find statements like this kind of insulting anyway if you’ve watched this far I appreciate That you care about this kind of thing and if you feel like I’ve misrepresented or misunderstood anything please feel free to let me know but with that thank you all so much for watching and I hope you all have a wonderful day peace Foreign Video Information

Minecraft’s “usage guidelines” are meant to communicate guidelines for content creators, server owners, modders, artists, event organizers, and more. But these are, in my opinion, not only harmful but far too vague, essentially granting them the freedom to do anything.
