Foreign there was a strange message in my fortune cookie last night it was three in the morning I stumbled into my apartment wasted starving carrying a bag of greasy takeout boxes filled with ginger beef barbecue pork fried rice I wolfed it down and then passed out typical Saturday night Wake up the next morning with little memory of the night before and the kitchen’s a mess dirty plates in the sink grains of rice scattered across the counter feel nauseous and head to the washroom and puke out everything in my stomach typical Sunday morning start cleaning up and notice a half Eaten fortune cookie sitting on the table with that thin strip of paper right beside it I walk over eat the other half of the cookie and prepare to throw the paper out but before I do that I decide to give it a read for shits and giggles you know The people in the basement remember you I almost laughed at first because it seemed like something that I would do some cheeky on higher At The Fortune Cookie Company slipping in a few creepy messages as a joke I could appreciate it it was funny enough Then I turned it around and in place of the usual row of Lucky Numbers was what appeared to be an address now this was strange the first thing I thought was that maybe it was the address for the factory the cookie was produced in that made sense but did it really If it was supposed to be an extension of the first joke then it didn’t quite track but it also could have been an oversight a mistake in the print whatever I thought I tossed the paper into the trash and got ready for the gym my way of feeling Like less of a piece of after a night of heavy drinking predictably it wasn’t the best workout but that wasn’t entirely due to the hangover I couldn’t seem to stop thinking about the address it hadn’t quite registered the first time I’d read it but as I thought about It on the treadmill I was pretty sure that I knew it from somewhere it was familiar finish with free weights take a shower and then sit in a coffee shop with a sandwich and an espresso and I’m still thinking about where I’d seen it before after getting home I tried to resist the Urge to fish the fortune out of the trash I asked myself what the point was even if I did recognize it from somewhere how was the effort worth it in retrospect that was more of a cope the source of my apprehension had been deeper than that though it was something I couldn’t quite understand at the time I felt nervous and I couldn’t justify why which only served to make me even more nervous eventually I caved and began digging through the trash I held the paper up looking at the address for a long time before a vague recognition slowly began to sink in Then I sat down at the computer and searched it up on Google Maps and as soon as the image is loaded up the memories began to flood in the street I grew up on the woods behind the cul-de-sac the house that sat right across from ours I stared at the screen until it started not to feel real then I rechecked the address four or five times but there was no mistaking it that was it one of the houses I grew up next to immediately I tried to rationalize it what if somebody who is associated with The company lives there maybe something got mixed up and his data ended up in a fortune cookie no I thought that couldn’t be right because that house had burned down years ago I tried to think back to that time but found that my memories of it were strangely distant hard to recall I must have sat there for hours thinking failing to recall anything of note all I knew for sure was that for the vast majority of my childhood up to the beginning of high school I lived right across from that house and then something happened that caused it burned down and I moved away I couldn’t for the life of me remember what that event was if anybody had died hell I couldn’t even remember who had lived there we must have met at least a few times I thought but I came up with nothing it wasn’t even the case that I’d been Too young since I had memories from before we’d moved there this just didn’t sit right for it to be a coincidence would be crazy there was literally no chance so then what was this it was a paralyzing thing to have on your mind and it turns into all you can Think about all you can focus on answers I needed answers now there were a few options the first being to go back to the takeout place in order to ask questions problem was I’d pretty much blacked out that night and had only the haziest recollection of even ordering The other option was obvious enough I had the address after all it wasn’t too far away maybe a 45 minute drive out of the city as far as safety I couldn’t imagine there being an issue it was a suburban community and it wasn’t like I was planning on breaking Into the place or anything so I settled on it and made the drive over the next morning and the house was exactly like I had thought completely burnt down a blackened shell of a place I thought seeing it in person might cause the memories to flood back in but that didn’t happen I sat there in my car for 10 maybe 15 minutes and at no point did I ever see anybody else outside so I decided to go in I know that I said I wasn’t planning to but there was no way I was just going to leave it like that There was no police tape no signs telling me to stay out and if there was anybody squatting I just leave the way I came so I walk into the house and immediately my senses are assailed by dust and the smell of old burnt wood it’s darker than I had expected and I Use the flashlight on my phone to navigate look around the living room and then I remember the fortune the supposed people in the basement the hairs on the back of my neck stick up I stop listen carefully nothing but a light breeze outside and this gives me enough confidence to Approach the basement door it’s closed and the area around it seems to have taken less damage than the rest of the place it almost looked untouched reach out and grab the knob and push open the door a wall of Gloom Shine the Light down and it becomes smothered after the first few steps Stand there for a while listening to nothing but my own breaths and then I hear something else something faint maybe a footstep but I can’t be sure of it then I hear it again and then again as it gets closer definitely a footstep probably a squatter I think it has to be I want to call out and say something but can’t bring myself to do so the air seems heavy and there’s an electric feel to it it’s unnatural I don’t like it at all I hear some more footsteps and then it’s joined by another pair and then suddenly it sounds like a dozen Feet are stomping in unison all of them getting closer to the base of the stairs I slammed the door shut and run out of there afterwards I was sitting in my car breathing heavy trying to reconcile what the hell had just happened I looked over at the house almost Expecting something to burst out the front door a horde of emaciated ghouls or something but nothing came and so I calmed myself down and drove away if I went looking for answers I obviously didn’t find any after arriving back in the city I pulled over by the side of the road and took Out my phone and looked through my search history finding the bar that I’d gone out to that night I drove over there and searched around the area and sure enough there was a small takeout Place tapped into the far corner of a dingu strip mall I stared at it trying to see if I could Rouse up some memories of what had happened that night it didn’t work but I was still sure that this was the right place I got out of my car and walked in practically storming up to the counter While the woman behind it stared at me with confusion on her face that was palpable even behind the forced smile what can I get for you sir she asked suddenly I felt the biggest idiot alive what the hell was I supposed to say what was I doing here Then I remembered that I had the fortune in my pocket and so I took it out and held it up I was just wondering about this Fortune I got you see there’s an address on it and I it stammering through the sentence I watched as the woman’s smile began to Fade slowly at first until it morphed into a scowl something malicious but just as soon as it does it’s back to the smile causing me to question whether or not I had really just seen that just wait there for a minute sir she says to me before disappearing into the Kitchen I look around nobody else in the restaurant but me the place was blanketed by a creeping silence the kind where you’re just waiting for it to be broken my eyes begin to wander and I look up at a big framed analog clock its hands aren’t moving Then I look down and pick up one of the paper menus sitting in a stack on the counter open it up and every single item is just the same line of gibberish copied over and over and over I tense up feeling like I’ve just walked into some obscure trap I put the menu down and prepare to leave taking one last glance back to make sure that nobody’s following me and right before I’m about to turn around I see it a face staring at me through the kitchen window it was pale and had a dead stare and There was something off about it something not quite human but I didn’t look at it for long enough to figure it out I backed out through the doors and once in the parking lot I turned and sprinted to my car from there I sped back to my apartment my heartbeat elevated dangerously High The entire Drive I started to get a bit paranoid maybe something had followed me maybe something was hiding inside my bathroom thoughts like that after a while I was able to calm down and I started to do some research on the restaurant nothing came up no website no telephone listing nothing A Google map view of the street shows only the store that had presumably existed before it none of this is tracking and so I resort to looking for answers from a source I wouldn’t have gone to otherwise my father now you need to understand that I have something of a strained relationship With the man in other words I haven’t made contact with him in over a decade I don’t know where he lives or what he’s done with his life or if he’s even alive I guess a relative would have told me if he had died but I can’t even be sure of that The strangest thing is as I sit here thinking about it now I can’t even pin down why this would be the case where my apparent resentment towards the man would be coming from the memories I have of him are decent enough I can’t recall him ever beating or Screaming at me nothing like that the more that I think about it the more I get the feeling but it all has something to do with that house but I still had his number and so I decided to give him a call just to ask some questions I was almost certain that he would have changed it by now but he ended up answering of course the call started out awkward I was stumbling over my words trying to find the right things to say which was something that seemed next to Impossible despite this he sounded strangely calm About the whole thing almost as if he’d been expecting a call I went ahead and told him everything that happened the fortune cookie the house the Footsteps in the basement all of it I wasn’t sure what kind of response I was expecting that he’d call me insane Maybe Ask me what in the hell I was even talking about why after all these years of zero communication I’d be coming to him with some like this but surprisingly he seemed to be understanding about it he seemed to be taking me seriously he told me to calm down that he had Something he needed to tell me something he should have divulged years ago but he needed to do it in person he told me that he was living in a town a few hours away that he’d drive her over and meet me at 3 pm tomorrow I asked him where his response The house I asked him why it had to be there if we could meet anywhere else for obvious reasons I had reservations about going back to the place all he said was that I shouldn’t worry that he’d explain everything once we were there the conversation certainly left a lot to Be desired but I’ve decided to go anyway I’ll sleep on it first though maybe I’ll change my mind in the morning but I don’t think I’ll be Satisfied until I get some answers I volunteered to sit next to a dead man on a plane and deeply regret it The man in seat 43a died halfway across the Atlantic I was sitting near the front of the plane just behind first class and couldn’t really see the commotion but I could hear someone gasping and wretching loud at first then quieter and quieter a flight attendant got on the PA and Asked for any medical professionals among the passengers to help I guess there were none after a few minutes the man sounds deteriorated into a sort of gurgle then silence then it was over his name was Molino and he was old but not that old and it was likely a heart Attack aneurysm drug reaction or God’s will according to conflicting end hand reports that filtered down the plane from row 43 where a flight attendant simply buckled the newly deceased back into his window seat and covered his face with a complimentary Airline blanket the pilot got on the intercom and told Us the plane would be turning back to New York due to a tragic medical situation involving one of our passengers folks we’re looking for a volunteer willing to sit next to the deceased while we return to our originating airport the pilot continued this flight is entirely full and the Person sitting there now isn’t feeling comfortable it’s an aisle seat and it will only be a few hours before we’re back over land I’m not sure why I volunteered probably some combination of exhaustion altruism and morbid curiosity my vacation plans were shot anyway I figured so why not Take the most interesting seat on the plane the flight attendant thanked me profusely as did a queasy looking teenager who took my original seat I picked up my handbag and shuffled down the aisle to the very last row of the plane my only prior experience with corpses Was an open casket funeral for my grandmother when I was a kid but the idea of death had never particularly bothered me it’s natural after all that said I admit that I second guessed my decision as soon as I saw my new seat mate mister Molino rest in peace sat upright between The window and knee struck around the waist with a blue fleece blanket covering his torso and head the blanket did not cover his hands which were resting on his lap above his seatbelt placed that way by a flight attendant as a sign of respect I assumed Molina’s pale fingers were Twisted into Claws that betrayed the agony of his death I couldn’t look at those hands without imagining what his face looked like under the blanket I thought of asking for a second blanket but the flight crib was still busy calming down other passengers and preparing for a U-turn around the Atlantic Ocean So I tried to forget my uneasiness and closed my eyes and slept I woke hours or minutes later I don’t know to the jostling of turbulence the cabin lights were off and most of the passengers around me seemed to be sleeping I looked out the window trying not to Look at Molino as I did so and saw only the uniform Blackness of the night I imagined the ocean miles below us lightless and cold the thought unsettled me and I reached across Molino to close the window shade then I stopped myself hadn’t the shape been closed when I sat down I realized there was something else off about the scene Molino’s posture had somehow changed while I slept it took me a few seconds to pinpoint it his gnarled hands remained on his lap he was still belted at the waist and the blanket still shrouded his upper body but the fabric looked somehow Twisted Now as if he had been fidgeting very slowly knowing it was insane even as I knew I couldn’t stop myself I lifted a corner of the blanket covered his shirt which the flight crew had unbuttoned while trying to save him a patch of blue gray skin sprouting White chest hair peeked out from it I lifted the blanket higher his collar was flacked with dried blood I remembered his terrible gasping finally I pulled the blanket entirely off and stifled a scream Molino’s head was turned away from me exactly as if he had turned to stare out the window I could see his face reflected in the plexiglass it was undoubtedly a dead man’s face pale drawn lips parted jaw Slack there was no life in it except his eyes they were moving I stared at the reflection for half a minute and unsure of it in the center of that Death Mask two Pupils flipped back and forth as of tracking something out there in the sky what are you doing a voice beside me interrupted I looked around and saw the woman seated across the aisle staring at me not so much in fear as disgust cover him back up give him his peace keys I think he’s been moving I stammered his eyes I think he might not actually be but I couldn’t finish the sentence it was too crazy nor did I have to because at that moment my stomach dropped 10 feet along with everything else in the plane coffee cups and purses slammed against the ceiling A man near the first class section nearly tumbled out of his seat I heard call lights going off all over the plane as passengers were jolted awake in panic and confusion passengers please take your seats Buckle in and secure any loose items the pilot said over the PA sounding shaken himself The weather along our flight path is clear and no planes in the area are reporting turbulence so I’m not sure what this is but we should be through it momentarily even as he spoke the mild background shaking I felt since waking up became noticeably more violent the woman across the aisle began Fumbling for her seatbelt no longer paying any attention to me or Molino I forced myself to look at him again the jolt must have caused him to pitch forward at the waist his head colliding with the seat in front of him but Molino’s face was still turned Toward the window his neck Twisted at such a sharp angle that I worried it had snapped I looked at his hands again and the power of his skin three flight attendants and a dozen passengers had witnessed this man’s death and I could not rationally imagine they were mistaken And yet in a reflection of the window his eyes left to right left to right I had heard that strange reflexes sometimes kick in after death limbs flailing headless chickens running nerves clearing out the last backlog of instructions from the brain but the eyes I had never heard of that I made myself look past that unsettling reflection at the sky itself it was still dark moonless and cloudless but the atmosphere seemed to have taken on a strange Hue a very dark green like pea soup fog I thought I could see Vape shapes swirling around in the Merc though it Might have been an optical illusion I recoiled I desperately wanted to be anywhere else right then but the rest of the cabin was approaching a state of pandemonium flight attendants were hurrying up and down the aisles attending to spills and bruises even as they tripped and staggered the entire plane was Shuddering like a barrel going down the Rapids a series of jolts sent Molino’s upper body swinging back and forth like an upside down pendulum he was thrown backward into his seat then sideways into me a horrible feeling I will never forget and then the opposite way is face Slamming directly into the window where it came to rest that was enough for me I unbuckled leapt out of my seat and locked myself in the bathroom directly behind me I would cower on a toilet for the rest of this hellish flight rather than spend another minute sitting with Mr Molly no this plan worked for a half hour or so I braced both my arms against the bathroom’s walls and listened to the Chimes of flight attendant call buttons the wine of jet engines and the growling of the sky I tried to calm myself by visualizing the skyline of New York the JFK airstrip a calm descent but then I imagine malino’s window his face matched up against the glass like a little boys his dead eyes searching the night the captain’s disembodied voice called me back to reality he sounded outright scared now and the PA kept cutting in and out extremely anomalous weather meet Everyone in their seats in the emergency position immediately if we depressurize the turbulence stopped for four or five seconds and then suddenly it felt like I was inside a washing machine I bounced against the walls of the bathroom landed on the floor and could barely manage to get the door open and Crawl on all fours into the aisle all three flight attendants were down sprawled on backs and bellies between the seats some of the overhead luggage bins had burst open and spewed baggage out many of the passengers were weeping a few prayed and for it all the plane would not stop shaking I heard a series of small bangs above my head and felt something white on my cheek every single soda can in the galley had exploded I climbed into my seat and belted myself in having briefly forgotten about Molino in my Terror black Flack but he was still in his seat of course Whipping back and forth like a flagpole in a hurricane head butting the window so hard that I could see the Plexiglas balloon outwards and rebound each time Flac I became worried he’d crack the window but that’s supposed to be impossible so I overcame my revulsion and grabbed his shoulders But I couldn’t restrain him again and again his head hit the window I began to fear that it was not simply the motion of the plane that compelled him Flack no one else on the plane was watching this some of the passengers had rallied and were trying to pull the injured flight Attendants out of the aisle others were Whispering goodbye messages into their phones Flack I heard something crack beside me and hoped desperately that it was Molino’s skull and not the window outside I could see that the green fog was alive with swirling amorphous shapes Flack Chrome another explosion Not pop cans this time but pressurized oxygen escaping into Sky Molino had managed to smash out both window panes in one final blow now his mangled head was hanging outside the plane and the rest of his body was straining to follow it restrained only by his seatbelt and the width of his shoulders An alarm went off in the cabin and a jumble of oxygen masks fell from the ceilings I put mine on at once but heard other people screaming some passengers were trying desperately to get masks on the unconscious air crew but the plane was shaking more violently Than ever and loose debris was flying up the aisles toward my row toward the hole a dead man had made in the airplane cabin breach said the pilot limited backup oxygen so I’m trying to descend to a safe altitude but hard to do that in a storm or whatever it is God be with us once I was sure that I could breath and was now in danger of being sucked out myself I took one last look at Molino his head might have torn clean off outside the window for all I could see of it past the rest of his body I Pictured those eyes again which had seen something in the sky that we had not seen could not see even as it now threatened to shake the plane apart there was some connection between these events that I might never understand but even without understanding I could make the last move available to me I reached over malino’s lap lifted one of those cold clot hands and unclassed his seat belt there was an intolerable crunching noise as I presume his shoulders were squeezed and crushed to fit the window frame and then in a split second he was gone out The window into the night a pale old man falling end over and toward the Black Ocean whatever you saw out there I whispered whatever you were looking for go to it and leave us be the green fog lifted a few minutes later and the plane descended until it was Safe to breath without the masks less than an hour later I really did see the JFK airstrip a whole Squadron of police and ambulances met us on the way down the flight attendants and several passengers had to be hospitalized but as far as I know no one suffered serious injuries Federal investigators eventually Concluded that we had flown through a localized weather anomaly witnessed by no other plane in the sky that night some sort of debris must have been flying around up there with us and taking out the window at 43a they wrote in a report this event led to a sudden Loss of cabin pressure in which the body of a passenger who had died earlier in an unrelated medical emergency was ejected from the plane I expected to hear a lot more about it on the news but I suppose in the end it was just one of those things The airline had no interest in publicizing the incident of course and the passengers had no desire to relive it for most people on the flight it was simply a freak tragedy followed by a close call and all’s well that ends well I’m the only one that will dream for the Rest of my life about Molino’s eyes and what they saw on the way to the ocean hey man want to play Minecraft said Jake to his best friend Alex sure thing replied Alex I’ve been itching to play all day the two friends sat down at Jake’s computer and launched Minecraft They decided to go on an adventure in a dense jungle that they had never explored before look at this a hidden entrance to an ancient Temple said Jake pointing to a small opening in the side of a cliff awesome let’s go check it out said Alex eager to explore the temple They entered the temple they were suddenly transported into a new world the world was made entirely of blocks and had a distinct pixelated look to it what the heck where are we asked Jake looking around in disbelief I think we’re inside the Minecraft world said Alex equally shocked As they stepped inside they were greeted by a musty smell and the sound of dripping water the walls were covered in cobwebs and dust and the air was thick with an eerie silence this place gives me the creeps said Alex looking around nervously yeah me too Replied Jake but let’s keep going I want to see what’s inside as they explored further into the temple they began to experience strange and frightening events sound of ghostly Whispers echoed through the temple and they caught glimpses of ghostly apparitions lurking in the shadows dude do you hear that asked Alex Looking around in fear yeah I do reply Jake this place is starting to freak me out the deeper they ventured into the temple the more mysterious puzzles they encountered they had to solve riddles navigate treacherous traps and decipher ancient symbols to progress this is insane how are we supposed to Figure this out said Alex frustrated by the puzzles I don’t know but we have to keep trying reply Jake determined to uncover the truth about the temple one of the traps that the friends encountered was a room filled with a seemingly endless Maze of laser beams They had to use their quick reflexes and teamwork to dodge the beams and reach the other side of the room another trap was a series of pressure plates that triggered deadly spikes to shoot out from the walls the friends had to use their parkour skills to dodge and jump Over the spikes and they barely made it out alive there was also a room filled with boiling hot lava and they had to jump from platform to platform to avoid falling into the lava the platforms were moving making it even more difficult to cross the room the traps were designed to be almost Impossible to overcome but the friends were determined to uncover the truth about the Temple’s dark history as they continued their Journey they found ancient symbols etched into the walls of the Temple they spent hours trying to decipher the symbols but they seem to be written in a language that was unfamiliar to them This is hopeless we’ll never figure it out said Alex ready to give up hold on what’s this said Jake holding up the tablet it looks like an ancient tablet said Alex looking over Jake’s shoulder Jake examined the tablet closely and saw that it was covered in strange symbols And markings he had seen similar symbols throughout the temple and was determined to decipher them it has the key to unlocking the Temple’s Secrets said Jake a sense of excitement in his voice the friend spent hours studying the tablet trying to figure out what the symbols meant finally they had a breakthrough The symbols on the tablet revealed the location of a hidden room in the temple a room that contained the answers to all their questions with the tablet in hand they were finally able to make their way to the heart of the temple where they discovered the truth about its dark history The temple was built by a powerful and cruel King who used its puzzles and traps to test the intelligence and bravery of his subjects those who failed were punished by being trapped in the temple forever we have to get out of here now said Alex filled with a sense of dread However the temple was not going to let them go easily the traps and puzzles that they had faced on the way and were now working against them making their escape even more difficult as they made their way through the temple they also encountered ghosts that tried to stop them from leaving The ghostly Whispers that they had heard earlier were now deafening finally they stumbled upon the entrance to the temple and they burst out into the open air gasping for breath they looked back at the temple now bathed in the light of the setting Sunday we made it said Jake smiling in relief Yeah but we need to get out of here said Alex looking around nervously the friends ran through the jungle not stopping until they were far away from the temple that was crazy said Jake catching his breath yeah I don’t think I’ll ever play Minecraft again said Alex still shaken by the experience We made it said Jake smiling in relief yeah but we need to get out of here said Alex looking around nervously just when they thought they were safe they suddenly found themselves back in their own homes as if the entire experience had been a dream what just happened asked Jake looking Around in confusion I don’t know but I’m just glad we’re back replied Alex still trying to process what had just occurred Video Information
