Ladies and gentlemen geeks and nerds welcome to a brand new series called dissecting Minecraft and I’m joined here by methods my methods how you doing hey yeah thank you very much so this is a brand new series and we are going to do as a title says we are going to dissect Minecraft and so we’re going to be looking at a whole bunch of technical things around the game we’re going to start off with some pretty basic stuff some foundational things but as the series goes on we’re gonna get more deeper into the stuff and try and explain as much as possible about the Inner workings of my craft and the technical side of the game this is going to be from all the kind of basic redstone components you see behind us all the way through to a mob spawning algorithms and stuff like that a lot of stuff I don’t understand but my friend Tier methods does so sure we crack on and methods why don’t you eat what it’s for the people that don’t know who you are why don’t you introduce yourself and stuff all that right I’m method some still read 50 young and part of this I craft server you might know I do Technica redstone since almost six years and yeah I would say I’m pretty educated in the restaurant side of things and all of the other game mechanics okay we see two – yeah it was yeah so also yeah methods does YouTube and stuff all that so I’m going to stick a link in The description to the dates of this I Croft discord and also methods channel so I’m go and check their stuff out and yeah well worth we’re we’re looking at all right so should really get started let’s go alright so here we are and we have a whole bunch of firm of items in Front of us so methods are going to play the part of the teacher and I’m gonna be the student so I’m gonna ask all the stupid questions that everyone’s afraid to answer I asked her so um yeah there’s no there’s no such thing as a stupid question so we’re gonna ask away and Yeah I’m going to look dumb but that’s alright that’s not mere four so three get started methods with the redstone dust maybe yeah let’s go so we basically we have to normally read sawdust it can be powered for 15 blocks before it runs out so if you just flip this Lever and go to the back here and add one more this one is no longer power that’s basically the backbone of technical minecraft right right and so for those that just aren’t sure this I’ve got texture pack on here so it looks slightly different to the normal Game so we can see the power levels as we go along so you can see the numbers here so when it gets to zero that means that’s not powered but you can see from those numbers how much stick how much strength how much redstone strength power strength we have waked up after 15 Out of that labor all right awesome okay and then right here we’ve built up all kinds of power sources so we have to nominate button stone button which keeps powered four 20-game ticks and then we have the wooden button which keeps powered for 25 game ticks right right I’m going to I’m going to stop you right there methods what is a game tick let’s do a quick game ticks how many ticks are there what are they says to about games actually way the game has ticks okay every second the game does 20 game takes what does That mean so basically a tick is something where something happens it’s every second is murdered in 220 ticks and this way we can pretty much time stuff right so in an insider game tick the game does a whole bunch of different things and yeah I’ve got it okay now but That for a day so so that so we divide we divide a second into 20/20 segments and that’s called a tick and a buncha stuff happens in each tick and a lot of stuff we do with redstone is around timing and having the concept of a tick Is very important it’s just the 20th of a second yep okay awesome so this button here stays on for 20 game ticks this button here stays on for 50-game ticks which we can also show here okay and this one here will be a bit longer and then we have two pressure plates which React to for example me standing on them or a mop okay also this pressure plate here is on four 20-game tricks and this one here is on four let me guess fifty again okay like the wooden button so if we quickly step on that see also there’s a specialty here now For example the stone pressure plate will not react to any items well the wooden pressure plate will right okay there’s our first special case here okay and then we have to heavyweight it and to wait at pressure plate those puffs will stay on for 10 game ticks to concede it really fast I Says half a second right yep Beaufort is a minute and I have another specialty so as you can maybe tell they only give a power output of 1 okay but it could of course be much more and what they do is they count the amount of entities or Items that are on there just keep queuing Pistons on top of 3rd and maybe some other stuff oh wow control now the signal strength rises up and does that is that the same for for mobs life I had a whole bunch of zombies on there cannot tell how many Zombies arena on that freshness yes’m the rest flow charts on the wiki that can tell you exactly how many mobs per signal strength you need right those who increase a level okay stuff then we basically have two redstone torch which is pretty much just a power source you can place mm-hmm and Interesting part about it is it can invert signals right so this bottom torch now turns to stop torch right so when we use a torch right so this is something I want to ask about because and so the problem that I have and I suspect that many people what you have The same problem a lot of the basics that I kind of understand but when I get to build something I fall down very quickly trying to put something together so freeze up with this redstone torch what blocks is actually powering like if we had a bunch of like lamps around it Maybe or like these the block is standard on powered the ones next to it ones above it where does that power extend to so the power from the redstone torch let’s actually use two lamps it was a good idea goes to all the sides and to the top right but not the one It’s on what the look is on no not the block that is okay and this might be I’m not sure if it’s the right place to ask but I’ll ask it now we can put it off if we need to but there’s a difference between strongly powered and weakly Powered right so yes should we talk about that with the redstone torch maybe demonstrate it might be quite good yeah so we have a strong and a weak power that means basically if we put just a piston on top of this block here it is strongly powered by the storage it’s Directly next to it on top of it it’s strong power right you can also put a block on top of here at the end of this I will do exactly the same but it is weak powered now since the power has to go through this first block and then This block here becomes powered which in case powers displaced on top right so when a when a block is strongly powered law is this block above the restaurant so CH is that then lock kind of lock can be can you think of it like as a as a Power source and then haven within power one block away from it but you know in all directions yes okay right so if you just take the lamps again hmm can pretty much do the exact same thing we did one layer lower with the torch and it’s Still is all about right so all of those blocks outward right but then when you take you take that one out it D powers those ones so that block there it has to be a so has to be a solid block in there it can’t be yes be solid block only Solid blocks conduct its stone power right okay and is it easy to know this again this might be a silly question is easiest know what’s class there’s a solid block versus non solid block because it’s various there’s very some technology like solid blocks transparency is that partially fluent Largely not dead easy to know because there’s a bunch of special cases usually you can test it out with the torch and just a lever let’s put a torch here in a lever and whatever block it is and this is a solid block for example take the Glass you can still put a torch on it but we can no longer place the liver right I guess not a solid block right same goes for example a trapdoor we couldn’t even place the torch on top of it it’s not a solid right so if every Odd you test this out would be for example using some other things redstone dot and a repeater hmm so if you just power this here and it was a solid block to repeater should turn right okay if you do this you can see repeaters on not a solid block not a solid Okay that’s good that’s that’s actually that’s really useful so that’s something that as you as we’re building up our own contraptions we can do that test to try to find those kind of blocks that might be unique in a certain situation that would be your powered okay awesome good stuff No it’s like already love it all right okay this let’s move on then so the next one right next we have two redstone block hmm it’s also basically a solid power source so we can just place it somewhere and it will from all sides that it can reach something it will Power it so on all four sides and even top and bottom just will be powered this will be so it basically gives out a constant power signal to all sides all six sides right open and right so I thought the okay so that’s so is that Similar to so when we when we strongly powered this block above the redstone torch right here so we did this so this block above is strongly powered is that similar to what this resident block it’s the leg is Dylan that’s the difference to the redstone block it does not Strongly power anything adjacent to it right so it’s lúthien so it’s weakly powering that the lamp above it yep right so if it would strong power then this lamp should technically be on but it is I thought that’s the difference for a redstone awesome okay good stuff next we have two first Very important part a repeater so as we’ve shown before redstone can only go for 15 blocks before it runs out and what we can do now is basically add a repeater which will give us another 15 blocks of length right and a repeater has two more little things it introduces Delay to the whole system so every repeater gives two game ticks of delay okay that means when this redstone here fits into this repeater – game ticks later this line here turns on okay and you can also add more delay so right now it’s in the basic setting it’s two game Ticks okay now it’s four now a six now is eight right okay so I’m gonna also have a question now it’s gonna be more confusing so is there a difference between a game tick and a redstone tick and I kinda know the answer I think but I let the master explain yes there is yes usually we refer to redstone ticks because of the repeater actually because it gives one redstone tick of delay one redstone take is two game takes the only reason I do not like to use this is because we can generate different Signals we can also generate a free game takes o’clock and it’s just a game takes this more scientific you’re better off adapting to game takes from the start okay so it’s about rats don’t take it with Stu game takes two game takes equal one redstone okay okay okay so we’ll Keep talking back Game six to keep things simple okay all right awesome okay next we have the comparator it has a bunch of special functions so first of all it can also be used to lengthen signals as we can tell here but there’s already something special the comparator Only outputs the signal it also gets so right here we feed in a signal of signal strength all right and we also get an output of signal strength one so the comparator basically keeps the signal strength alive right so can you train those together so If I have a bunch of days yeah exactly it doesn’t matter how many they also give to game takes of delay okay but I have a few more special things for example a comparator will only react if the signal is longer than three game takes a repeater will actually react to Any signal you feed in there no matter how short it is and a comparator needs a minimum of two games it’s two and a half actually okay right so for example we build a very standard pulse generator here that gives us a very short pulse then you would see this repeater Actually does not react at all at a comparator sorry and if we now add a same with the repeater yeah it’s not coming home right and if we add it to 2 then we can see it actually reacting right okay that makes some sense because I think I think when I’ve been playing Around with things I’ve seen I’ve seen that when I’ve had well get one two observers in a minute I’ve seen that when I’ve used an observer that gives a quick pulse and I don’t get a reaction from the executor okay awesome now the most basic use of the comparator Is actually I think reading out inventories hmm so what this comparator can do I put an item here in this chest will turn on and of course it also does the whole signal strength deal so if we fill it up a little bit more can probably see it going up slowly yep And if the chest is completely full it will be about the mix output right and it’s that that signal is that like a what’s the right word like a proportion of what’s filled so depending on the container so this is a chest so it’s got Many many spots like 27 places but if I have a hopper only has five and it just defines the the table there’s also flow charts on the wiki for dad that is just too much to list it alrighty oh sure okay all right also there’s much more to The comparator but I think we will make a special episode about that because you can do all kinds of things like comparing different string furs and yeah there’s no chick with them and all kinds of crazy stuff and it’s so much fun yeah things like clocks stuff all that so Yeah that’d be there be useful all right guy stuff alright okay next we have two piston and a sticky piston I guess we just do this and it will show you what it does so a normal person just pushes a block and a sticky piston can push and retract A block and so this also this game kicks so you get it right and obviously this is quite basic but you can think of the sticky piston nose having because it stickies got some glue on it that’s gonna keep that block stuck to it and but there is an occasion where it can Lose its block yes so a nice leaving question therefore here we have sticky pistons if you feed a 2-game tick signal or shorter into a sticky piston it will actually loose the block as I will demonstrate here right now you did something you did something funky there So that so we’re coming through service in a minute but that looks like that observers powering the block above the piston and the piston still reacted so what’s what’s going on there so it was quick showcase of quasi connectivity whoo dad used to be a back but by now It’s small as a feature and it basically means that it can power blocks one block diagonally from it below it Bonzo and this observer here actually just powered this piston it did never power this block above it here this block was never power it just power dismissed Right hold on yes I just I’m just processing that for a second wait so so this observer so normally we have an observer we’ll talk about those I guess in a minute but then we have an observer if you if it if it sees that we’ll talk About back than a minute be over so if it observer hours something like for example it would power this lamp if it had a bit if it held something right that’s powering the block right behind it but in this case with the piston so that air block still gets power right Because of the observer but block above the piston the piston still sees that as a basically if you look at this here we just have two Pistons on top this concrete block here is diagonally one above the lower piston and I flicked this lever right then both Pistons will extend so where does that come from that is too thick you see back basically that means that a diagonally lower block if it’s a piston or dropper or dispenser will still get powered one specialty is it will actually not receive the needed up so now I’ve flipped this lever this Piston is technically powered but it doesn’t know about it so as soon as I place a block here it will actually extend and if you for example have a second piston on top of here then it will get updated by the piston itself and already know it so this way we can basically Power twice the amount of Pistons right okay so when I’ve heard this before one way I’ve heard of people talking about it is trying to imagine what would power a door so if I had a door here this power source here would be with power do the door yeah that’s a very Neat trick here with the door it’s a good idea so if this toy is powered all Pistons on these blocks where the toys will also get powered another trick you can use is the lamp right so this lamp here turns on which in fact would power the piston below here right okay Alright ok I think we can also make a special episode up in size so much more to QC it’s just a basic gist of it one block diagonally below it okay you can power a piston and if that happens it does not get to update by itself you have to Provide it ok great so yeah I think I hope we’re getting to that in a bit more depth a bit like when he service but that’s just a quick sneak preview hopefully we’re gonna talk about later on ok great stuff ok next we have the observer got a bit I think the observer Is probably one of my favorite blocks I love it oh for sure mind so the observer is also basically just a power generation but it’s a bit special it already generates a quick pulse so if I just place a block in front of you you can see the redstone lighting up for Exactly two game ticks hmm it also gives two game takes of delay so if a place this block here 2 game ticks later it will power this line here for 2 game takes right and now the specialty about the observer is it detects block state changes ok so what is a block state Change block state change for example is this fence gate opening and closing right block state change is this lever going up and down right so something about the block that changes right exactly even even a block breaking of placing is a block state change right so pretty much everything that happens in The game does something is a block state change also a block state change for example is this piston moving that observe right so ace will give us okay so even though it’s it’s still looking at an air block so here is looking at an air block when you move it it’s still Looking at an air block but it detects that it’s looking at two different blocks in effect that’s basically all about observer okay fantastic then we have two tripwire hook let’s quickly build this up trip via hook basically is a floating pressure plate I would call it so it Will also detect all kinds of entities going into it okay so it’s landed so is that strongly powering this this concrete yes ok so we can light up all of those around it okay exactly and a specialty about the tripwire hook is that it gives a one-game tick delay hmm so one game Take after it got triggered it will power all of these lamps and I think it’s 10 game ticks it stays on so half a second okay you and so can that detect is it just plays that context or connected technology thing every single entity in the game that includes players mops items projectiles Pretty much everything okay besides blocks off okay and it’s so I’m just hovering over the string in the center and I’m not sure how he’s a date to see but there’s a lack of like hitbox that you can see on the string so anything if I interact anywhere with that box that’s Where it’s gonna take effect from okay next we have two dropper it pretty much just drops items so if you throw a bunch of items in here and power it these items get shut out and just fly a little bit random to all sides hmm and it also Gives a 4-game tick delay okay every 4km ticks you can power this dropper and it will shoot out an item that’s the mix speed you can power right and next we have the dispenser it’s basically the exact same four items so but it’s a little bit special so There is a few blocks you can feed in here that will actually not just be dropped out as items they will be placed in the world for example arrows just think and shoot arrows for us sket some okay all for example T&T could go yeah Now it never so good now we’re token I what about things like water and lava water and lava can be placed with this yep that’s a good one it’s maybe do a quick demonstration some water okay I can be placed and also picked up again you know of course need to pack it Inside of it to pick up water right so if it’s got an empty bucket inside and a liquid in front of it if it will to a lava it will pick it up and if there’s a bucket with a liquid inside it with dispenser out into the world Hey it does that it does that with boats as well it would this dispense like a boat boats would also work here today it’s all the blocks to dispenser interact with buckets arrows boats TNT Isabeau tweets doesn’t boat have to be in front of water right to work it has To be water I think I just block here we would need the water boat or okay it goes and that’s pretty much all about the dispenser there’s one tiny specialty or oh I forgot two blocks so it can also place with a skeleton skulls of souls and is close by and pumpkins Okay so for example we could make a snow golem with this automatically he’s gonna meet the most pretty quick though by Zelia class the same roof deliver don’t think we want to test it now door right now so that can dispense so does that dispense items on to a player so if I Was standing here but if there was some armor in here we can use this to display us stuff on to me like even at pumpkin I guess pumpkin armor or else I think that’s it weapons work as well okay good stuff and I think that’s now actually add about The dispenser okay oh of course the the most important one we forgot totally about it bone meal so if you feed bone meal into dispenser and you power it it will actually bone me with a crop in front of it goes and it’s probably the most used Case for a dispenser you can make all kinds of farms lifted nano farms crop farms tree farms pretty much everything that’s global with bone meal isn’t some way automated with the dispenser they ingest in just with that only the earth wear it so where can a dispenser be in Relation to the crop does it have to be next about that or can it be above it below it that kind of stuff has to be directly adjacent to the pasta agonal doesn’t work in Minecraft but all of the blocks around it bone milling if you bone me regress it will actually make Poor grass and flowers and all kinds of sort of it so with the dispenser that’s a special case you can actually power grass grow grass from below since it’s still a grass block even from below okay because you can actually click the bone meal on the grass so it’s still adjacent To the crop or a grass block in this case it’s upside down okay well yeah I OH okay okay listen right but still applies the same rule it’s adjacent situation right and I think the grass block is actually the only block you can Bonilla so that’s why it still works in this case Right I stuffed next we have the hopper one of the most important blocks in Minecraft yes that’s the hopper do it transfer us items so if I just throw an item onto the Supper will quickly disappear and it pushed it into this chest here right and by a shift clicking You can point it into this chest you can point it into the ground you can point it to all sides okay besides upwards upwards does not only downwards or to the side right in the hopper sucks up items every game take and transfers items every eight weeks Right again check Suzanne yep that means the mixed speed of a hopper would be nine thousand items per hour so what about if you have so the one one question that I’m not always sure about but obviously there’s lots of designs where you have hoppers on top of each Other with their chests like a like a storage room and what happens there is the items will go down first into the chest and fill those up and then they fill up the chest above them right so kind of downwards takes priority so what was actually happening there is is the Vapors been sucked down and then pushed across or are they being held had it what’s actually happening there so let’s imagine this here if we throw an item in here it will always go into the lowest chest until that lowest chest and opera is completely filled and this simply Happens because the first item is here in this top hopper and then it technically would try to go into this chest but the bottom hopper already sucked adalat right so it’s it’s a priority sing it’s generally priority is always downwards right and it’s so decided so does that happen every every Tick so if we take it there all the hoppers try and suck from a public assets before every game clicked a hopper tries to pick up items right so it’s the hopper below the top one that actually tries at every game take oh there’s an item suck right sucks it out Of there and right and so I’ve said before it so before this one gets chance to push it into the chest one below it’s already sucked it down yep okay okay awesome and then last but not least we have the trap chest which can be used for traps So if you just open it you can tell in the back we get an output of sequence string for one and it’s pretty much all it does so if we use our new knowledge of a repeater for example and I put a repeater in here then if you’re unsuspecting You’re you can open their chests they work you’re done yes all right awesome so we blew a massive hole in the world okay all right so I think that’s a that was a really good sort of introduction to the basic technical building blocks so in in the next so upcoming episodes we’re Going to dive into all this stuff a bit deeper and one of the things we’re going to do as well is we’re going to start taking some contraptions that either methods is built or I have for some other people in the community have built up and then we’re gonna die set them Down and sort of explain how they work why they are designed the way they are and so they give people an understanding of those things so they can they can sort of make changes themselves and bring them into their own world it was just very important if you get This basic introduction out of the way so we don’t get the same questions every every time we make a new episode so this has to be the star of it and I’m sure as we talk about those other things that may get any more in-depth there’ll be More questions that come to light that we we can also as as we go along oh you can be sure about this this was not all the information related to those looks this much much more all right okay shall we perfect up then so what yeah so thanks for joining me methods And this has been super cool already already learning stuff so yeah can’t wait for the next one and that just about does it for the first episode of dissecting minecraft that was super cool and of course that was just the foundation of stuff we’re going to get Much deeper and much more technical as we go on but yeah if you found that useful then please take the like button and if you’re new there feel free to subscribe and if you’ve got any comments or suggestions get it in that comment section in particular I’d be interested To hear in what kind of stuff you want us to talk about so is there something in minecraft well the technical side you don’t understand that you think it’d be useful for us to delve into and talk about all the nuts and bolts of it yeah So get that stuff in the comment section alright until next time I gigs I will see you later Video Information

Welcome to a brand new technical Minecraft series, Dissecting Minecraft! In this series myself and _Methodzz_ (from the SciCraft server) will explore all things technical in Minecraft. We’ll start with the basic redstone components, explain mob spawning algorithms and flying machines. We will also take apart contraptions to explain exactly how they work as well as build our own from scratch.
In this episode we introduce at a high level:
★ Redstone Dust ★ Levers ★ Buttons ★ Pressure Plates ★ Redstone Touches ★ Strong/Weak Power ★ Redstone Blocks ★ Repeaters ★ Comparators ★ Pistons ★ Droppers ★ Dispensers ★ Hoppers ★ Observers ★ Tripwire ★ Trapped Chests
We will go into more detail about these blocks as the series continues.
The aim of this series is to teach technical Minecraft to non-technical or semi-technical players. If you’re interested in this side of the game but need some help understanding it, you’ve come to the right place.
We are playing on a 1.13.2 Java Edition server using Carpet Mod as a teaching aid to freeze or speed up the game when we need to.
