Hello everyone my name is Pixar IFS and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide I hope you guys are having a good day because I am quite frankly having a bit of a weird one we are standing on top of the iron farm that we built in The last episode and each time I log into my world this farm is doing something very different like yesterday when we were testing out this farm it seemed to be working pretty well I’m sorry I’m just gonna have to wrestle this guy into the pit and there we go So it seemed to be working pretty well before with the villagers producing iron golems quite regularly then it kind of came to my attention that production on the farm wound down a little bit and so I did a little bit of research and I discovered that a few people had Suggested as a solution putting the beds one block apart and having like this kind of v-formation of beds like that so that there was always one villager who could see the zombie and moving the zombie one block down so that it had like I level I line with this villager Here quite often but the other two villagers could continue working and so that seemed fine and that has been generating iron for me for a little while and in total we have ourselves several stacks of iron at this point the point we are almost at nine stacks Almost a full stack of iron blocks and I’ve been using this farm sparingly since yesterday see now the iron golem is down there and it’s fine but as you saw in the introduction here one iron golems spawned in the middle of all this carpet and I put the carpet there Specifically so stuff wouldn’t spawn as you’ll remember from the the Enderman episode that we did a recently with the the ender ender the animal farm we have carpets up around here and that is supposed to stop stuff a from spawning I mean you’re not suppose to be Able to spawn stuff on glass or carpets anyway but also this triple layer of carpet even stops Enderman from teleporting into this area so I’m amazed frankly that iron golems are able to spawn in the middle of the wall around here and that is kind of making me second-guess whether I should be Approaching iron farms right now because during the night they actually seem to spawn really well like in the middle of this platform but during the day some weird stuff is happening so I’m not entirely certain if these mechanics are finalized or what maybe we will see some Better farm designs coming out of the community in the next few days but per I think this might be a little bit above my paygrade for now I will do a little bit more research and we will probably do a more comprehensive guide to iron farming including a scaled up iron farm Design at another point in this series but right now this is slightly baffling to me and I’m not sure quite why the farm is behaving the way it is maybe there’s some stuff that I could build better some stuff I could end up doing a little bit smarter but for now I think We’re gonna call it good we’ve got a little bit of iron we know the concept is sound at least but yet there are gonna be some very very strange behaviors from this farm until some of these mechanics are a little bit more tried and tested in the meantime though I would like to address another problem that I have and that is the problem of fireworks and gunpowder there is very little gunpowder going spare right now I have spent a little bit of time a of khang at my mob farm balloon over there to get myself a bit of gunpowder from Creepers that will spawn there naturally and that’s also been quite a useful source of bones for bone meal for growing trees because as you’ll have seen from the the fox den we needed an awful lot of oak wood just to make the roof of that place and I completely ran Out of oak so I had to do a lot of tree harvesting to recoup my oak supplies but what I really wanted to work on is a gun powder farm because Rockets are so useful to gameplay in Minecraft when you’re at the end game and you like flying around with a lighter personally I feel like I overuse Rockets a little bit considering that my world is mostly meant to be walked around there are these loose pathways connecting up everything through the farmhouse over here all the way out into the town and at once we get into the town and everything is kind of interconnected but I still spend a lot of time flying around and I use duration 1 Rockets which only use one gunpowder per rocket and despite the fact you saw me span them a little bit there I don’t tend to do that all that much I tend to be quite Economical with the way I fly but even so I’m finding myself running short on gunpowder and I need to go back to that farm and afk for it quite regularly now especially considering we’ve been doing a lot of flying in the end as well flying out over the void and stuff like That it has really become more and more necessary to have a better supply of gunpowder and that is why today we’re going to look at a specialized mob farm we have done the general purpose Bob farm in the past now we’re going to tackle a creeper farm and a creeper farm Can be done in a number of ways there are a few different mechanics we can employ to allow us to farm creepers with ease and one of those is to use cats because as you may know creepers are scared of cats creepers will actually avoid cats where possible and we have Quite a lot of cats here that we could employ as our kind of creeper farm stewards and they would actually help us out you know farming the creepers and making sure creepers walked off a platform where they were spawning however what I want is gonna be a little Bit more industrial in scale than that and so what I think we’re going to do is try out a farm that it’s kind of like a I guess a sort of passive mob farm design in general but we are going to specialize it for use with creepers and For that we will need to find a suitable location we could build it up in the sky like we’ve done with this balloon here but I feel like we could probably spend a little bit of time looking for a better location for that and that is why we have come back to the Mushroom island which you may remember from the suspicious stew factory build or even at the episode we did way back where we discovered this place the first time and you might be thinking wait a minute you’re coming to a mushroom island to build a mob farm don’t hostile Mobs not spawn here at all and you are correct however of course they do spawn in ocean biomes if you create land or even in caves underneath ocean biomes and so mushroom islands can actually be a really great jumping-off point for creating stuff like specialised hostile mob farms because if you’re loading in The area around here the area around you that might actually contain hostile mobs if it was normal terrain you’re actually basically loading a whole chunk of terrain that will not load mobs at all mushroom islands are actually a great jumping-off point for creating hostile mob farms or at least the kind of Natural spawned hostile mob farms because you are loading a massive area which cannot spawn hostile mobs and then you create one small area just offshore that does of course ocean terrain typically doesn’t generate all that many hostile mobs either with the exception of course of the Drowned But once again we can create an area up in the sky a little bit that’s going to avoid using up the mob camp from further down and there are gonna be caves underneath the ocean but if we do our part lighting those up or maybe we set An afk point that’s at the top of this tower over here say a little bit higher than that we can create a pretty easy afk spot somewhere around here and allow ourselves to farm creepers in say this little Bay out here once we’ve set up a few spawning platforms for the creepers And specialize them so that only creepers will be able to spawn there and you might be wondering how exactly we do this to demonstrate how this works we’re going to come out here to a creative test world which is the most convenient place I could line up a couple of mobs In this usual suspects kind of way and I wanted to show you a little bit about the hostile mobs that will naturally spawn if you create a dark room mob spawner like the hot air balloon we have you will typically get stuff like zombies and skeletons spiders occasionally you get Enderman if you Have enough head room you’ll also get stuff like witches for example a lot of these have very similar heights let’s take for example the witch and the zombie here if I press f3 B to show you their hitbox you’ll see that their hitbox basically ends just before a Two-block height so these are typically referred to as to block toll mobs because they are the ones that have this kind of height the witches eye line is a little bit lower but its hitbox is actually the same height you’ll find the same is true of a skeleton Enderman of Course have three blocks height so do things like a wither skeletons and so forth but if we come over to look at the creeper you will notice that the creepers hitbox is significantly lower look at the difference between those two let’s use the wood planks to measure That here of course the witch and the zombie are kind of along the top of the wood planks whereas the creeper actually has a height that is a little bit lower than this first line in the texture of the plank here and the reason I’ve got a Trapdoor in my inventory is because it’s actually possible to put a trapdoor over the top of a creepers head when it is standing in a space like this where you can’t really do that with the witch or the zombie because their hitbox already exists in that space and so to reverse Engineer this concept a little bit what we can do is create an area which is only two blocks high and then line the roof of it with trap doors like so and then you will only be able to get a couple of mobs spawning in there Creepers being one of them the other one unfortunately for us is spiders spiders can also be spawned under trapdoors and occasionally they will have skeletons on them that was unexpected anyway spiders can spawn underneath these trapdoors because as you can see quite clearly here they have a hitbox that is much lower it’s Really only about the size of a block it’s a little bit yeah it’s about level with a block there so spiders will be able to spawn in spaces like this however as you can see from the spiders hitbox it’s much wider than a creepers hitbox and so the way we Can get around spiders spawning in an area like this is to place carpet every few blocks it’s going to be much much easier to prevent spiders from spawning that way and if we can prevent the spiders from spawning that means we maximize the amount of creeper spawns We’re going to get because every mob that spawns inside of there has to be a creeper they might be wondering what about baby zombies cuz they’re only a block hi and you will find them running after you in caves and getting through one block high gaps very very easily but the problem About baby zombies or rather the good thing about baby zombies is that when the game decides to spawn one of them it is actually checking for the full height of a zombie it actually checks there is a two-block space available before it kind of rolls the dice behind the scenes And decides that a baby zombie is what its gonna spawn this so realistically you’re not going to get any baby zombie spawning in a creeper farm if the head room is only this high because it’s trying to look for a space where it can spawn a full sized zombie before it even Decides whether it’s going to be a baby or not so once again our creeper farm mechanics are preserved by that and we can use that to our advantage although speaking of those spiders it has just occurred to me that now we’re back in the survival goat world by the Way via the 2 methods I was thinking of to use in this farm are actually kind of being compatible because what I was thinking was that he would have several flaws to this farm that we would flush out using water coming out of dispensers and that’s the method I ultimately Intend to use but that means we can’t really use carpet because carpet gets removed by water so if we end up with carpet placed everywhere and we end up placing down a water bucket right here for example it’s got a break all of the carpets so we’re going to get spiders Regardless if we want to go with a dispenser flushing method but that’s kind of what I want to go for and there’s a few reasons for that the main one being that we can also in the fullness of time turn this into a decent hostile mob farm that will farm hostile Mobs outside of just creepers and spiders right now I kind of just want the creepers will take the spiders as like an unfortunate side-effect let’s say we’ll start about here what we want to do from here is create a platform that is actually going to be the exact Area a dispenser with water can flush out so let’s go 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and then here is where we’re going to be placing our first dispenser so that when this thing flushes out with water it’s going to basically completely fill this area pushing the creepers off into whatever Space we set up around this farm to set up a platform like this all you really need to do is place a dispenser in the middle and build these four arms in 8 blocks in each direction like so and then connect them up diagonally so we’re Just going to fill in this space until we get to the size of one platform with the platform completely built let’s place a water bucket on here as an example of what it would look like when it is flowing out of a dispenser and as you’ll see the water flows out to each Edge of this platform without flowing out over the edge meaning that anything that comes out of this platform here is going to be pushed off and into the ocean around the outside which eventually we’re going to fill up with some kind of trap for the creepers and The spiders let’s not forget the spiders so in order for this farm to be pretty effective and to use up more space what we’re actually going to do is get some observers build up two blocks from our original dispenser like so and remove that block now anytime this block here changes into a Water source which it will whenever the dispenser pushes one out then the despite the observer here is going to activate and what that’s gonna trigger is the dispenser on the platform above and we’re gonna build out another platform out from here like so you’ll notice this is already at a two block Height and then from there this is going to start spawning creepers once we have an additional trapdoor on the underside of each one of these blocks you can probably see that this is going to start a pattern that we all build upwards in a tower and each floor of it is gonna be Spawning creepers yes and spiders so as you build up this space you’ll want each platform to basically be a carbon copy of the one below it at exactly the same footprint exactly the same size and you might have noticed that I’ve lit the place up a little bit that’s mainly for Visibility because it’s nighttime but also if I step away from this area and it’s dark at any point considering that I’m surrounded by a mushroom island this is basically the only place on the surface where hostile mobs can possibly spawn and therefore it’s going to become A bit of a deathtrap if I step away 23 blocks or so and hostile mobs can spawn out here in the first place so I am being a little bit careful about how I’m using the space right now and making sure that it’s lit up if I think I’m Gonna step away from it for a while which I will need to because I left my shocker box over on the shore here we are gonna need a whole heap of trap doors and trap doors don’t come particularly cheap you can find them in all six wood types and an iron trapdoors As well right now I’m not gonna use iron trap doors because while that might be very easy for some people to farm right now the iron farm situation as we saw at the start of this episode is kind of in a state of flux and so I won’t use iron Trap doors just yet until iron becomes much more plentiful instead I think I’ll stick to wood and an easily farmable wood type like spruce for example if you if you go with like acacia or oak or birch good luck because you’re gonna do a lot of tree farming for that but now With the second platform built we can put a dispenser on top of the observer here and now anytime the dispenser below that activates the observers gonna update and it’s going to activate this dispenser as well which is going to activate an observer above which is gonna activate that dispenser and so on And so forth until we reach a towering set of platforms and I’ll give you a quick example by activating mr. Spencer here with an observer which is the only redstone source I actually brought with me but if we activate that using BAM the stone bricks there you’ll Notice as we come up here the platform above has activated as well and this platform looks a little bit weird right now because I just placed a couple of blocks where they’re not supposed to be but then yes we end up with a full platform of water in pretty much every direction Aside from over there because the water is flowing weirdly right now but as you can see each platform here activates the one above it which leads upwards and upwards until we get to the full height of our spawning platforms and all of the creepers in the system get flushed down Into a killing mechanism for this point for the benefit of the folks who are very keen on their redstone efficiency I should point out that it is probably much more efficient for this farm in fact I can pretty much guarantee it is going to be much more efficient for this Farm to be built as low in the world as possible in much the same way that we built our Enderman farm because if you’re building it at the bottom of the world then that’s all the minecraft has to calculate is right right at the bottom of the world so it becomes a lot Quicker for Minecraft to calculate what it’s doing because normally it calculates what’s happening from the bottom of the world upwards and so if you make a creeper farm at the bottom of the world you’re going to be seeing similar rates of creepers – the kind of Stuff we get from the Enderman farm it’s not going to be a steady stream that way because it still relies on a redstone mechanism to pump out the the water every now and again and flush the creepers off the platform but you are still going to see a pretty huge amount Of creepers coming out of this thing and that’s how you get the maximum yield of gunpowder right now I don’t plan on doing that simply because this area is quite large and I don’t really feel like digging all the way down to bedrock in order to get this farm built but in Future we have the potential to do something like that we could create a hostile mob farm in the same way as long as we’re okay lighting up 128 block perimeter of caves around it and I think that could be a pretty good way to farm stuff it’s especially good if you build It out in the ocean and there aren’t that many caves around but I’m gonna continue building up these platforms we’re gonna do four or five of them in a stack here you guys know the drill at this point you pretty much know what we need to do just a couple of observers up There and that’s where we’re going to start platform at number three so I’m gonna go ahead and do this I’m going to cut away and we’ll come back when the farm is a little bit more ready for action and after a little bit of work which really didn’t take all that long Surprisingly here we are with several platforms which shoot now if you activate the dispensers all flood with water and by the way in the middle of that whilst I was working on this night felt I got attacked by drowned with the Trident goddess Trident so now I have a Say a third actually a third Trident that I probably need to do something with first of all only to repair it but I’m gonna pop that in there the next step of this is of course to figure out the collection mechanism because that’s gonna have to collect both creepers and Spiders so what I’m thinking about doing is basically just creating a large enough space around here that spiders hopefully will be able to just fall in and get swept down into another water stream that’s gonna carry them down to a two block wide section which is just Gonna have magma blocks at the bottom in those magma blocks we are going to probably push them down onto hopper minecarts which will collect items through the blocks and then hoppers underneath that we’ll be able to channel the items into a storage system and while the fact that we’re also gonna be Getting spiders is a little bit unfortunate we can look at that as a plus because let’s face it if you have a bunch of spiders you’re gonna be getting a bunch of string string is useful for crafting stuff like dispensers which we’re using in here cuz you need a bow For the dispenser we’re also gonna be able to craft it into wool if we need some spare well quickly the stuff like trip wise we can use those for technical things later on or potentially for stopping bamboo or sugarcane from growing that kind of stuff so really the Fact that this is going to be a creeper and spider farm is not such a bad thing after all but in order to do any of that with the collection mechanism here we’re gonna have to draw a perimeter around the outside of this farm and then we’re Gonna have to bring in some sponges to clear out some of the water so I’m gonna go and get that stuff and I’ll be right back well folks the farm is complete or it might be complete but I think I still want to make a couple of changes to it And I think we might go back to plan a of involving cats in the design of this farm and here is why I have my camera account logged in right now and the spider problem is really quite out of hand let me let me switch the camera account So I can explain this to you so what we’ve got here is a bunch of platforms with a large square platform over the top of it that is intended to block skylights so underneath here we have our spawning platform and right now as you can see as you Could probably see from the viewpoint before I am standing at a super high point in the world simply because up here it means that I don’t load anything in the caves below the ocean because having got my camera counting and had a very quick peek in spectator mode which Yes I know is cheating but it just kind of helps the efficiency of these things I have discovered there is a pretty large cave system underneath where we’re building the farm and as such lots of mobs spawn down there if I’m on the surface during the day or the night So what we need to do is either afk so stand in one place pretty high above the world to make sure that the only thing that can spawn stuff is the creeper spawner down here or alternatively we need to do a lot of lighting up which we Will probably do at some point in future because I would like that farm to be running basically all the time whilst we are working on some more stuff at the mushroom island if we come back here and decent terraforming and that kind of stuff and also it’d be nice to not have to Climb a you know 40 block high pillar from this chimney which is already pretty tall so the problem with this farm right now is the spiders as you can see it’s pretty productive and I’ll go into the redstone stuff in a second because there is a little bit of other Stuff that is preventing me from from wanting to use the dispensers and instead switch to cats but the the farm is very productive and is producing a lot of creepers but as you’ll see down here there is a little bit of a bottleneck for this farm when it comes To the spiders it’s an it’s actually not too bad right now because the spiders themselves are relatively few in number compared to the creepers and the creepers are all in there dying on magma blocks all the Gunpowder is being collected through hopper minecarts and is ending up in this hopper down here Which as you can see is already filling up however that includes one skeleton because there was a spider jockey that spawned at one point which is something else I forgot spiders could do and oh I should probably eliminate that one block outside of the farm but this is what I’m Talking about notice the amount of spiders that are spawning here and watch what happens when we drop them all down into this section of the farm they kind of rub up against each other a whole bunch and don’t really let much else get into the farm thankfully the creepers Still filter through because they are small enough but we really have a lot of spiders to contend with here and so I really want to eliminate spiders from this design entirely not only is it going to make it more efficient but ultimately it’s gonna prevent bottlenecks like this From happening and the only way to do that really is to use carpets or maybe pressure plates but then pressure plates would alter the flow of the water and potentially give the creepers a place to stand if they weren’t being swept off the platform so ideally what what we Want to bring in here is carpets and cats because having a single cat in the center of each of these platforms probably trapped in a minecart will still encourage the creepers to run to the edge of the platform and potentially off of some trap doors if we line this Area with trap doors they will see those as blocks that they can walk on if the trap doors are open it means they will just walk off the platform and fall down into the collection mechanism so we shouldn’t have to alter too much about this design that we already have here in Order to limit it to just creepers you may have already noticed the other reason I want to switch to cats and carpets and that is because the dispensers keep doing this now it didn’t occur to me when we were setting up the observer dispenser tower in the first Place the first cycle where it switches on is actually as you would expected it as normal but then after that the dispensers behave kind of weirdly and that’s because when this water source on the bottom here is shrinking as it is like dispersing the water each time the Water level lowers in that water source that actually counts as a block update and that is causing the observer above to update multiple times which as you might expect causes the observer above that to update as many times if not more and so the water platforms go through This weird cycle of like sometimes they’re flushing out sometimes one gets left behind and then sometimes a couple of them shut off and eventually it follows this pattern where they do all reset and everything’s fine and this as you can see gives enough time to spawn a Ton of creepers and a ton of spiders however for our needs and especially if we are going to be eliminating spiders from the equation entirely it seems like cats are just going to be a more efficient way of getting this stuff done so I’m going to go ahead and find myself Some cats the cats won’t be in danger in this farm they’ll be perfectly fine in mine cuts in the center of here and the creepers will just run away from them over the trap doors and hopefully fall into the pit that we’ve created down here so I’m going to go ahead and do That and I’ll see you guys in a minute so I’m still troubleshooting a couple of problems with it but now the farm is very much closer to where I want it to be I am up high enough in the world once again that we shouldn’t get any mob spawns in caves In the surrounding area and if we switch over to the camera account view you can see that stuff is spawning here with some regularity in fact there are a few creepers already dying down here in the farm now the problems outstanding are that there are still a couple of spots Where spiders can spawn and I think that’s mainly because of the trapdoors the way I have placed the carpet there are no three by three areas of stone brick here which is what spiders need to spawn on but I’m pretty sure they just need one solid block here and the Trapdoors are technically counting towards the area in which the spiders can’t spawn so that is something we need to take care of the other problem is that creepers are occasionally running away from the cats which are established in here in the minecarts right in the center and they’re getting in this far And that seems to be a safe enough distance for them it’s basically been about six or seven blocks taxicab distance and then they come to rest on the edge of these trap doors instead of running off like that guy just did because occasionally they will try and Pathfinder round occasionally they will End up wandering over to each other and knocking each other off the platform just with the hitbox kind of collision and stuff but that is not something we can really rely on and eventually it could lead to a ton of creepers there we go who just heard that guy just pushed His friend off and eventually they will despawn and that kind of whole cycle will continue again because I’m FK up thirty two blocks above the farm therefore we would end up with this stuff randomly D spawning occasionally so there may still be chances for those creepers to dsport i’ve actually shot a Couple of them with a bow and arrow as you can see from the gunpowder drops around here I’ve occasionally had to do that but it’s for the most part it’s working pretty well we are getting a bunch of creepers coming down into the system here and those will eventually Drop in there are a few that would like to try and resist the water flow a little bit but they’ll they’ll drop in there and then we should have a decent supply of gunpowder coming from this farm in the meantime and we can fix these problems these are just problems With distance that we can probably figure out just by shortening the platform’s a little bit which is something I didn’t really want to do because I thought we had a these our spawn Abul space down here but for now we should be getting plenty of gunpowder out of this thing and Hopefully this is designed that you can adapt and use in your own survival worlds and hopefully at least it has explained the mechanics of creeper farms to you in a way that will help you understand how these things work as usual there are a bunch of technical Players out there with some really great creeper farm designs logical gate boy is one that I would very much recommend but there are a bunch of others out there as well so make sure you check those out if you want to see a more efficient farm in action and more concise tutorial and Just spread your wings and find a little bit more about the YouTube Minecraft community because there are plenty of us out there but for now from the top of this massive pillar of stone brick I am gonna say goodbye for the moment I’m going to afk out this farm a little While longer collect as much gunpowder as I can maybe tweak a couple of the problems and then we’re going to have ourselves Rockets for days that ladies and gents and I hope you guys enjoyed the episode thank you so much for watching if you did enjoy the episode Don’t forget
