Hi there everybody Kirk Hamilton from kotaku here here to show you another cool virtual reality game that probably looks familiar a lot of you yes I am playing Minecraft with the HTC vive and it’s really really cool as you can probably imagine it is very hot and Sunny in Portland where I live right now but it is nice and cool and rainy here in Minecraft and I can even pause the game and look around and the raindrops have frozen in the air which is very cool I’ve been playing this for a couple Of days now I am no Minecraft expert but I do really like Minecraft whenever I play it I always find myself thinking well I could play this forever and just never play another video game so this is a very easy installation I found a couple of links very helpful post on the Vibe subreddit that just was really easy for me to set up I’ll include those in the post about this but you basically just install a couple of things so the way this works is you’ve got your two hands here and your right hand kind of holds your tool left hand has a little Bit of a almost an easel a little bit like tilt brush which is another vibe the Google via painting app which you can pull up a menu of your inventory and select from it with the right controller but um the way you move around by default is you just teleport like this And I mostly just turn and it works with this with the vive chaperone as well so if I walk too far in one direction if I walk over here I see my chaperone bounds which is great and makes it much easier to just move around so I’ve been playing For a day or two and don’t really have much of a setup happening but I’ll show you around a bit and do a little bit of mining just so you can see how it works I’m currently clearing out so you select you select your inventory by sliding Your thumb along the thumb pad which works pretty well it’s not as fast obviously as as hot keys but um it’s it’s mostly fine if I’m getting attacked by a spider or something which by the way is terrifying it can be it can feel a little bit like It takes me too long to get to my sword but as long as you kind of prepare it’s not too bad and like I said I’m sure that this this whole thing will become better customized over over time this this feels like a little bit of an early Version as well as it works okay so let’s just go over here I’ve seen people complaining about the teleportation I’ll just move around a little so you can see how it works it’s I don’t have any problem with it I you know obviously I’ve played a lot of Minecraft and I’m used to moving around in that game it’s a normal way but uh I just doesn’t put me at all you can turn on a normal sort of locomotion where you move forward smoothly which you know is I think turned off for comfort like with A lot of these VR games because it can make you feel a little bit motion sick to just be sliding around but really I tried it and it didn’t make me motion sick I’ve gotten pretty that’s not really a problem for me anymore in VR but it just didn’t it wasn’t very Comfortable way to move around I like you only move forward and it just didn’t really feel like it wasn’t like playing normal minecraft so I figured I’ll just play it this way okay let’s so let’s go in here so this is just a mine that I Just started and I’ll get out so you can see it’s you don’t have to actually yeah it would kind of be a drag if you if you had to do this but you can which is really cool you can actually oh woops you can actually mmm that’s not working There we go you can actually physically mine you’ll probably want to put on their wrist straps for that so if you really want to work out you can do that you can also just hit the trigger and do it automatically but it is pretty cool that it lets you do that basically which Is pretty great you can see the cable is already becoming an issue I’m very much looking forward to when the vibe is wireless especially for games like this but yeah pretty good so uh so that’s you know that’s the basics of movement this game it’s just it’s really obviously really Immersive I mean it’s I get immersed in this game even when um let’s do this I I get immersed in this game even when I’m playing on the screen so playing in the VR is just very very very captivating I hear spider I’m gonna get killed Where is he oh hold got into my face again I go kill this I hate these things yeah I can’t die yeah what’s up so that’s all terrifying um yeah I guess I left the door open the the enemies in this game are a little bit freaky when You’re in VR and they get right up in your face which isn’t really the coolest thing in the world when you’re talking about giant spiders especially if you’re afraid of spiders but um it’s not that big of a deal that’s because you can kill them pretty easily so this is my Home base this is basically how I play Minecraft is I start a little area and then I just dig a huge staircase down into the center of the earth I guess I’m probably not the only person who plays might grab that way so um let’s just go Do a little bit of mining so of all the things that I’ve played on the vibe this is easily one of the coolest it just it uses room scale uses the it uses the controller is it really just works it uses every aspect of the vibe very well And I can see you know as people work on this a little bit more give you more customized controls it’ll just be one of the coolest things you can do in virtual reality because it’s Minecraft I mean it’s it’s a game that lets you do just about anything you want so so yeah Very very very cool showcase for virtual reality so if you’ve got a vibe you can you can use this the Sun is setting let’s go let’s go lucky oh that’s nice you can use this with the oculus rift this is a version of Minecraft oh that’s really nice a Version of Minecraft which was originally intended for the rift but this one’s been customized for the vibe it’s just very soothing very easy to play for and just get lost I just get lost in it and play for a really long period of time so so yeah that’s a That’s that’s the gist of Minecraft on the HTC vive if you’ve got a vive you probably already have minecraft this is a no-brainer recommendation I’m easily one of the coolest things and the most complete full-featured things that I’ve done in virtual reality so very very very cool Video The Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive are both out, so our deputy editor Kirk Hamilton has been putting a bunch of VR games through their paces. Here he’s playing a little-known indie game called Minecraft, which is apparently about crafting mines or something. At one point he mistakenly refers to an artist’s palette as an “easel” and would like you to know he’s very sorry for the mistake.
