Mischief of Mice – Thaumcraft 5 Getting Started: Part 1 – An Introduction to the Basics

Welcome to the mischief I’m Vallon and I’ll be giving you the basics of thaumcraft 5 to start today I’m going to end up giving you a little rundown of some of the things that are in it if you’ve played thaumcraft on a previous version before you might want to throw

Out the window everything you knew but then again it does use this current version at least does use a lot of the old foam craft stuff but it’s kind of a mixture of previous versions together plus some new content so let’s get into it to start with

You have your standard shards here they come in the different types you’ve got your air water fire earth entropy and of course your order which are your standard ones then you’ve got your more uncommon like you’re tainted in your balanced ones that you’ll have to get in

Special ways but you won’t find them in the world like you did in thaumcraft 4 which looks like a cracked rock with glowing parts instead they’ll look like these little crystals or shards actually now if you end up harvesting these you will actually only get the shard and it

Will disappear now you notice I got one this one here has multiples over time if you leave one in place it has potential to spread and then you could actually end up harvesting it again I actually had planted these with special crystals back on the wall so that it could

Actually grow now I do recommend that as you find these in the world like this here that you end up leaving at least one of them to continue spreading now if you see a large cluster like this you’re more likely to get more crystals from it

Whereas if you see a single or just a maybe even a double like this one here then you’re only going to get one usually it’s when you see two pieces like this you’ll actually only get one shard from it now these are just some of the many things that are added with

Thaumcraft 5 now primarily these are actually ingredients for making or crafting different items as well as they’re just really cool to look at but moving on we have some creatures in the world this is a patch or Peck depending on how you like to pronounce it now there are

Multiple versions in the world this one here is actually a stalker they’re typically neutral to you they will not attack unless attacked but they can be pretty fearsome you can see he’s got a lot of hearts so they’re actually relatively friendly in a way as well

So if I drop some of these on the ground he’ll actually pick them up until he ends up getting where is it come on you a little uh green shimmer on him I probably didn’t see it because I had this in the way sorry about that oh

There you go so then you end up right-clicking and he will now allow you to trade with him now if I end up trading with him it’s a roll of the dice you may or may not get something worthwhile and you can see here we’ve

Got some items to choose from so this is really cool we’ve got plenty of goodies that he’s giving to us potion of invisibility flame one above bone and a block of gold back now I can continue doing this until he ends up changing his mind you can see here he’s stopped and

That’s all the items he has on him for now so that’s just pretty cool mechanic and it’s just really neat to have these little guys running around usually you’ll find them in a magical forest which I’ll show you in a moment in your adventures throughout the world

You may end up finding common treasure bags uncommon treasure bags or rare treasure bags as well as the different variants in crates and urns now these inside will probably contain gold coins as well as other items it usually the rarer they are the better you get as you

Can see often you’ll get a gold coin now these are the equivalent of a smelted gold ingot that’s been broken down into multiple pieces so you can actually use them to make more gold ingots or rings and you can smelt them into a golden nugget if you so desire but they are

Used for multiple different items in the world to move it along we also have cinnabar ore and amber bearing stone now once you mine up amber bearing stone it will turn into this little bit of amber here and could possibly drop more with a looting enchantment the cinnabar ore when you

Mined it up will actually remain the ore as you see here but you put it in a furnace and you’ll get this Quicksilver here which will of course these are both as but more ingredients in making some really cool stuff in thumb craft 5 now there are other things as well there’s a

New biome the magical forest those that have played don’t graft before are familiar with this it’s very brightly colored large mushrooms covered with moss stone you’ll often find larger versions of regular oak trees that have this bright color to it you’ll also have a chance of finding silver woods with

Different fauna around them as well as the shimmer Leafs now I’ll get into those in a moment but there’s also another thing out here and that is the great wood trees that you see here this one is much bigger about two to three times the size of your magical forest

Oak tree and it yields great wood logs which are typically a much darker version of any wood in Minecraft now that shimmer leaf I showed you if I end up grabbing one putting it into a crafting table I will then get Quicksilver from it just like I would

With if I had smelted cinnabar so on top of that there are cinder pearls which you’ll often find in desert biomes with those you put them in your crafting grid and you will end up getting a bit of blaze powder and of course there are the V shrooms these aren’t necessarily

Dangerous but you can get nausea effect from them that can be rather annoying otherwise these are just good for ingredients whoa now there are some negatives in here and that’s the eldritch shrine tainted areas and new mobs some people may not view these as negatives I find them very entertaining

Actually let me show you what an eldritch shrine looks like and here we have an eldritch shrine which is populated by different cultists now don’t underestimate these guys they can be very very worthy opponents the clerics will shoot magic orbs at you the Crimson Knights will chase you down

And have the equivalent of about iron armor and iron swords with them so between a bunch of ranged attacks and whoa that also end up sometimes exploding setting you on fire all sorts of stuff and it will constantly keep spawning more of these guys if you end

Up not watching yourself but um yeah there is an eldritch shrine which can be used for certain purposes in the endgame now there are also taint areas which yeah things aren’t looking so pretty here as you can see this was rock at one point I ended up putting down some

Plants to try and help control it but as you can see a large portion of this tree has pretty much been melted away due to the taint in the area which can be a very very negative thing you don’t want to spend much time handling or touching

Taint nor do you want to end up running into the creatures that can be converted from it either so there’s plenty of new mobs as well you may find a little wisps floating around the world shooting electrical bolts at you you may find new creatures in the another or in alternate

Dimensions so it can be very very interesting and dangerous but I find it just to be a good challenge myself now we also have new and chants this is the same as previous thaumcraft where there’s a haste enchant that you can put on your Footwear to speed your step as

Well as the repair enchantment which uses your the power in your magic wand to slowly repair your armor so enough with this brief introduction into thaumcraft 5 let’s get you into how what you need in order to get going in there too so to start you’re going to need a couple of

Scribing tools here and you’ll want to make at least two of them feather ink sack and a glass bottle should do it in you can actually mix these and match them as you want in that corner there and you should get the scribing tools so get a couple of those get yourself a

Couple tables here wood tables to be specific which is just three slabs two pieces of wood will get you one of those next you’re going to want some caps you get yourself a couple of iron ingots you turn them into iron nuggets by putting them in a crafting grid and they will

Turn into nuggets then you make two of these you then take those two caps put them at either end of a stick and get yourself an iron capped wooden wand which if you look at my top left corner there let’s see if I can actually highlight it enough there we go you can

Actually see that there are arrows going and those meters are filling up you now have a hundred V in this wand and the V is basically like a magical power of the different elements that there are so as that slowly fills up we now have more

Ability to use this wand to make magical recipes or use foci with it to cast magical spells so now that I’ve got a wand what the heck do I do with it well there’s a book a guide book if you remember the vanilla recipe for a bookshelf then you can make yourself

This here set it down take your newly found wand or newly made wand and right click it I love the new effects on this you get yourself a thumb and nomicon which is fantastic you’ll also want to make sure you get yourself a whole lot of paper because you’re going to need

That so the thumb and on the con this is really cool it’s actually been improved over the last version considerably if I right-click it I open up and I have multiple tabs here on the left so your basic information is going to be on the front page oh if you’re having

Difficulty in actually seeing any of this you can actually scroll out with your mouse wheel and you can end up zooming by looking at it and I’m just left click holding by dragging this around it’s really really cool I do like the new enhancements for this also if you’re looking for a topic

You can actually go down here to search click on it and you can choose the topic type in the name or you can even click here and get the recipe for how to make it which is quite quite nice if you want to get back just click on the tab that

You were on before so there are different properties that you can see here there’s a whole bunch of little circular icons and there are multiple tabs I can click through let’s scroll out a little bit here so you can see how big this is and there’s a lot to learn

Here and not you’ve not everything is even listed on this page there’s probably a few secrets that don’t show up until you’ve got the proper things unlocked but there is alchemy actually we were on thaumaturgy which is more or less wand use alchemy which is more or

Less based around the crucible which is a cauldron and then there’s artifice which is all mixed up with all sorts of interesting and wonderful things there is one more on here as well but I have not unlocked it on here yet I’m sure there is something that might be

Unlocked at some point but if you remember anything about golems from before well throw all of that out the window because golems are changed 100 percent even their look is a little bit different you can see he’s got a little claw hands and stuff so these guys work

Entirely different but we’ll get to that in a much more future episode so getting into the basics here we have hexagons squares and circles on the thumb craft or thamma nomicon you can see there are circles they’re squares hexagons what what what the heck is that and then

There’s this purple stuff going on around here well essentially the circular ones are your basic research if you don’t already have it unlocked I recommend you do so if you go into here and you end up choosing a square one you can actually purchase these four with a research note now a

Research note will be obtained if you have paper as I accidentally broke that on the ground there and scribing tools in your inventory as you can see I have paper scribing tools in my inventory so therefore if I choose something here that’s blinking that means I have access

To it because I’ve already learned the previous requisite for it I can then click on it and the research note is added my inventory which is wonderful therefore I can start research on that straight away with a research table get into that in a second also there are hexagons

Well hexagons you can purchase once you reach the unlock for it with experience levels so if you have here we go if you have experience levels which I may have given myself a few too many experience levels for this demonstration you can then just click on it and it will cost

You three experience levels there we go I now know arcane bellows now the purple stuff here that I was talking about that usually means forbidden knowledge mostly harmless now that’s at least in this case there are maybe others that you may come across that will have some more

Severe side effects here we go this one here as well as minor you’ll come across even more as you unlock more and more research so essentially what that is is you will end up on occasion experiencing strange phenomenon and it can be quite extreme if you end up going with too

Much forbidden knowledge but it also may unlock the secrets of certain things later on but enough with that there are also pluses and stars plusses and stars so if you have learned something new you scanned something with a thermometer yep we’re going to get to that too and you

See a little plus sign on something that means new information has been added under that topic it’s usually a little green plus sign in the bottom left corner so if you end up also getting a star that means there is something that you have not yet understood or read

About but you do have access to it which will be this little golden star in the bottom-right corner so that’s new things that you haven’t even checked out yet but enough about that let’s get on with all this other stuff I keep mentioning and not talking about

Yet so those two tables that I told you about one of them take your wand to it and right click and poof turns into an arcane workbench nothing super fancy but there is a wand slot up here so therefore you can now craft recipes as you would in a regular crafting table

But if it requires magical infusion with it from your wand you can see there the different levels that I have the 92s and 91’s you can then use the magic stored in the wand to craft magical items to a point there are certain limitations to

This but it can be quite helpful so what about the other wood table what do we do with that well you set it in your house and you use it to eat off of getting kidding all right so you take your scribing tools and you right click that

Turn it into a research table now this is what we’re going to use for the research notes now if I right click this you can see here the scribing tools I clicked on it are now in the corner you can take any research notes you have

Place them up in here and you’ll see that you now have a whole bunch of the different elements on the side now if you have looked at your thumb and nomicon at all at this point at the very beginning which I do recommend that you read through each of these pages and

Essentially you shouldn’t need to actually continue on with my walkthrough because there’s a lot in here but I imagine a lot of the reading is going to be a bit mundane so that’s what you’re watching the video for but if you click on aspects of magic and you page right

Here you can actually see there are lots of things made up of all the different elements there’s a lot of elements in here and if you actually only start with 6 of them so to give an example let’s find the most basic example I love using

And that is Lux so air and ignis if you combine those together you get lux so this is a compound element this is a primal element this is a primal element so therefore by combining these together you get a compound element that’s essentially what we’re going to

Be doing here so we’ve got potential urbe instrumentum we need to connect the dots so all three of them connect in some line shape form whatever with it going up or down a level to another either primal or compound aspect sounds a bit confusing but it’s not that bad so

I have all these over here now I can use these to make more elements that will connect the dots so essentially potentia I see here it’s made up of order and Ignace now when you first start this you won’t have access to it for example you will need to learn

Research expertise I recommend if you have any circles that are not unlocked you go for those first because they are going to be very important for you to actually progress at all in any easy shaped way or way shape or form so first thing you should do research expertise

Then I highly recommend you do research mastery don’t worry about the forbidden knowledge it’s mostly harmless and then anything else that is circular you should then go for those as well but these two are going to make your life infinitely easier so by unlocking research expertise it essentially allows

You a possibility of getting back a research point it’ll also allow you to see the aspects like I just showed you and it gives you the ability to consume a knowledge fragment to add one point to each primal what that means is that this here is how many I get for a research

Note now let’s say I lose this research note Oh No what do I do well you go back into Velma nomicon and you go find that research note again there it is you need scribing tools whoops I ended up throwing mine away let me go get the one alright I’ve

Got them now sama nomicon and I can now click on it I’ve got scribing tools and paper in my inventory I get another note and I put this note in here and the numbers might be slightly different some might have 6s on my five some might have seven or

Eight or nine it all depends on the research you’re going for it’s a little different from the previous version of thumb craft for those that have played it before but it also is very similar this game is the same this is not so you’re not actually running around

Scanning things to build up large amounts of these instead every one of these research notes will have a predetermined number of primal aspects for you to use to make more of now if you happen to have a knowledge fragment you’ll see this click to consume fragment and add one of each primal so

Watch here six six six five six five seven seven seven six seven six excellent every one of those that you use you can end up increasing that also knowledge fragments can be used when right clicked to gain experience so it can be pretty handy that way – back to

Research rather here I’m going to give myself another one just because I can alright so to combine these together we’re going to have to go through a little bit of a recipe now luckily I did already unlock research mastery research expertise and research mastery now research mastery that dangerous one it’s

Not actually dangerous don’t worry allows you a even higher chance of regaining a research point if you end up taking it back and a 10% chance of it not costing anything Plus you can shift click on an aspect to create it in there much simpler so yeah very very easy so

Now it what I was talking about with this let’s say I take this here’s made up of order and Ignace well look potentia potentia so I can make more potential to connect these two together so let’s do that let’s make order and fire order fire and then I click them

Together and there we go and then I put this next to it and you’ll see that there’s a line connecting this to that next I want to get these to connect together it’s best just to work with a couple of them together and leave space to connect to

The others later but let’s see order and fire well I’m going to need to get to these if at this point you’re a little lost with how to actually connect all them together like I said just focus on one at a time order and fire well I know

That I have order I’ve got more fire than either one so let’s just do this this and then I actually can make another one combine that together and there we go so we’ve connected one side yes it was a bit wasteful but you can see that I’m

Starting to run a little bit lower obviously I used a couple knowledge fragments yes I know but this is the advantage you then can actually make a new research note if you use up too many of these in your stuck somewhere so you just throw away the old one make a new

One but now we need to connect either Ignace potentia or instrumentum to urbe so if you’re not sure how to do this I recommend then looking in Gotham and nomicon and you’ll see you’ll find the aspects of magic well let’s see herb ah is made of victus and Terra well what

The heck is victus made of let’s see here remember this is all alphabetical victus is made of terra and aqua that’s not too helpful but you can find out what Terra can be combined with so let’s see here Tara and spiritus not very helpful Terra and Ord Oh ah there we go

I know that there’s some more dough in there so if we end up making the tell’em then we might be able to combine that with Otto this is made with rum or dough so let’s just get that out there straight away this is made here here get

Us that mattel all right and then we just drop one more order and I messed that up so that’s alright I can actually click this and have a possibility of gaining that back but it didn’t happen this time I remember it’s just a chance that it

Could end up returning to you so I’m going to put another one down here and a Terra over here I know it’s a bit messy but hey I actually didn’t even need this one I got a little carried away it doesn’t matter yeah I you know I used a

Couple extra big deal you know but you take out the discovery and you right-click it and you then learn it now I’m in creative so therefore the discovery did not disappear that’s just why that happened now if I go in here you can see I’ve got that

Gold star I have not checked this out yet and it’s a new discovery for me so therefore that’s what this gold star is telling me I can click on it and it can tell me that I can now upgrade my wand with a great wood rod this allows up to

250 V of each type V is a different kind of way of saying the power level in a wand or in the world but we’ll get into the different types of those in a moment so let’s get into another topic real quick we’re not going to just go through

All of thumb Ituri or anything like that but there is a basic here of alchemy so to start with you can make yourself a regular vanilla cauldron place it down in the world get your wand and as with the other stuff just right-click it and poof it turns into a crucible which you

Can fill with water buckets of water or later on have friends do it for you and use it to end up chemically making or alchemy using alchemy to make different substances night or for instance which are you know I’ve got a little bit of these different colored night tours

Around the around here you can make different kinds of metals like alchemical brass you’ve got your thumb iam pretty cool stuff brass plates brass gears well what are those for there’s lots of things that they’re for least of which is a golem but that’s just the beginnings of that another item that you

Will definitely want to make is going to be a thermometer now a thermometer not a thermometer like it tells you the temperature the the thermometer is used for identifying things research all sorts of stuff you see lots of little question marks on there now you end up

Making one with piece of glass couple pieces of gold any of the different kinds of shards like so in a crafting bench will get you one of these now if you see question marks around something you can then right click and learn about it and it

Will tell you all there is to know about it nothing can be learned from this nothing can be learned from this there can be learned from something over there oops didn’t mean to do that yeah doesn’t really work with picture frames don’t use them on that but you get the idea

There’s so much that you can actually run around and click on so why do I want to do this well you see here I’m gaining practical knowledge of the trio’s vinculum Attalla more twos permit a co etc now in order to do that to find out

What it is that I’m learning you can actually go in here and oh look I now have a golem ANSI tab well opening the golem ANSI tab by scanning a golem that I made in golem ANSI is not the best way to go it but you can actually scan an

Iron golem that you’ll find in a village or one that you can craft yourself with a bunch of iron blocks and a pumpkin head so with those then you scan it you should be able to open up the golem ANSI tab clicking on that and you can see I

Have some new research that I can do I can purchase these I can there we go I’ll just purchase all these right away look at that I’ve got a lot of experience so it’s not a problem for me but therefore I can now end up learning about basic golem ANSI something I did

Not show you is the different kinds of nodes that are around now I’ve got these goggles here that I made with a little bit more advanced information that I’ll show in another video but you can go around and you can see there is a sinister node which its effect on the

Environment is a little bit strange it actually converts a nearby area to an eerie biome as you can see on my little mini map there now I have some flowers up here that specifically will help negate that power around those flowers but it’s definitely something to look at here and we’ve got

67 ere but we also have things like this which can be very negative as well a tainted node and with these goggles I think I can see is a few others too here we go we’ve got one with water in it got another one that says it’s pure all

Sorts of different aura nodes and with the thermometer if you notice on the top left corner there as I fly around the meter changes considerably depending upon the different aura that is in the area now you’ll notice that they are color-coded to match the six different

Primals plus one of them is a bit dark purple there at the bottom the dark purple is the taint or flux in this case essentially as I get closer to this you can see it gets much more prevalent and therefore can be a bit dangerous so you

Really don’t want to go near this stuff if you can help it it spreads really quick this wasn’t even here and within an hour it spread well well beyond where the flower ring is now that you see as I’m showing you now but moving on so there are a couple negative things in

Thaumcraft v besides just mobs and creatures and that is warp and flux now warp is more the psychological part of it on occasion you may end up suddenly hearing a heartbeat and whispers or with advanced warp you might end up experiencing visions there’s also temporary warp which will

Last for a short time or potentially a longer time but will go away after a bit then there’s permanent warp which will stick with you forever you can manage it though and mask it for a time as well King special medicines so not to worry there are ways around the effects if

They are negative to negative for you to handle now if the going by that what the book even talks about with warp flux and all things bad if the if warp is the mental version then flux is the physical this tainted area here is essentially an example of flux so this is usually

Wasted magics or things that are influenced by nodes that are specifically tainted like this one is here in this case a tainted node is essentially causing a whole lot of negative flux in this area so plus like I was saying wasted magic essentially recipes that they’re not quite exact you

May have some excess or something and it just spills into the atmosphere things of that nature typically and end up lending itself to it so if you notice this node has 67 air in it that’s just a reflection of how strong it is if you

Notice I have my wand here and it is currently increasing from the aura which is essentially just the magic in the air and it is not actually changing this sinister number down it is and I’m right-clicking it’s not drawing it from it so this is not thumb craft 4 but it

Will actually instead just draw it from the aura around so if I have my thermometer I can press the F key and it will actually drill down into each individual element and tell you how much there is in the area so you can see that there is quite a bit of each one

Even taint in the nearby area so in comparison to each other though you can see them on the full meter they’re pretty neat stuff but I think that’ll be it for today I will continue on with another episode working in two thaumaturgy next time so I hope you guys
