Hello everyone my name is pixarius and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide I hope you’re all having a good day in today’s episode we’re gonna do a little exploring I’m gonna do sort of a caves and cliffs themed episode considering that the caves and cliffs update is the one that’s responsible for All the Majestic terrain that we are encountering on a daily basis and from what I have seen occasional glimpses underneath this mountain we are in for a treat if we want to explore the caves below it I’ve not really been to any of the caves inside the mountain I’ve sort Of thought of the mountain as kind of like Holy Ground almost like I I don’t really want to do too much to it yet before I have more Grand designs for it in future but as we Patrol the perimeter here there are a couple of places there’s a couple of like shallow caves Here and there there are a couple of spots where it can drop off into a cave environment and I believe the same is true as we get further up and the main reason I want to look at this one in particular is that it’s a very very Close drip Stone cave we’ve seen a little bit of drip Stone cave over there by the starter house I believe the cave behind that had a little drip Stone in but I wasn’t quite ready to tackle it just yet in this case I think this is worth exploring because the environment Really opens out into a massive Cavern like take a look at this massive pillars of drip Stone falling to the floor there’s some mobs there’s some bats flying around and Enderman and all kinds of stuff but drip Stone caves can be an interesting source of resources and I’m Not just talking about the all blocks that we can see around here I’m talking about the drip Stone itself we’re going to drop down a bucket of water probably like adjacent to this block so that we can use it to get on out of here and we’re going to lower ourselves slowly Down into this cave because of course the first thing about drip Stone there’s a single pink petal down here that’s kind of awesome the first thing you need to know about dripstone is that of course it is pointy it will form into stalactite formations on the sea feeling Stalagmite formations on the floor and if you drop on top of dripstone it’s going to deal some extra damage to you even if you jump from a one block height onto a piece of pointed drip Stone the armor is absorbing a bunch of the damage but you’ll find that that deals a little Bit of damage to you and if you’d fall from a higher height or if some of the drip Stone Falls on you if it breaks on top of you like that then the damage will be multiplied it’s going to be a lot more dangerous for you to do that One of the coolest properties of dripstone though is that it forms into these connected formations not only that but it can form that way naturally you’ll notice the drips coming off of this and that’s just a natural property of these drip Stone stalactites and stalagmites the pointed drip stone that We’ve got hold of here and if we attach one of those to the underside of a block you will notice it occasionally dripping water particles but if there is a water block above the block that the pointed drip stone is attached to it can actually drip deposits of drip Stone Onto the floor and that makes it a renewable herbal resource it can be farmed you’ll find these Natural Pools of water all around drip Stone caves as a reminder of its relationship with water and if you find lava in one of these drip Stone caves you’re likely to encounter something even more Interesting I’m going to grab a bit of cobblestone from the environment around here so I can show you because I’ve spotted a lava source coming out of the wall over here and if I am careful we can just block this off but preserve the lava sauce inside the wall here so the Lava is behind this Cobblestone block back there and if we dig out the blocks below the block the lava source is occupying if you take a look at the underside of this block you will be able to see those occasional orange and red drips of lava the telltale signs that There is lava above this block if we attach some pointed drip Stone to that block you will notice that those drip particles end up coming from the tip of the drip Stone itself and they will drop a little more frequently meaning it is possible to use pointed drip Stone to Channel blocks of lava down into some some sort of receptacle if you acquire four pointed drip Stone you can craft it in a two by two to get another drip stone block but obviously drip stone blocks are fairly abundant in this environment so it really depends whether Or not you want to take down this environment if you want to remove a bunch of the naturally generated blocks wow okay hello skeletons and you’ll find drip stone blocks scattered around the floor so if you don’t want to take down one of the larger pillars of material if You find that a little bit too daunting or you think they just look too cool which is my stance personally with the ability to farm pointed drip Stone renewably it is perfectly possible to create a renewable source of drip stone blocks they can also I believe be traded From stonemasons if you want them in larger quantities although not every stonemason is going to trade them oh my goodness I just spotted an abandoned mine shaft among those drip Stone pillars what a cool thing to find down here it’s a really neat environment for It not only that but it seems to be largely suspended from the ceiling instead of support from the floor so I really want to get a closer look at that it is a long way down though so I’m going to grab some of the water from Around here so that we can use that to drop down safely because otherwise we might not make it back up we’ll drop our water source over here that’s probably going to run down into one of these caves but at least for now it gives us the opportunity to swim on down and I Think we’ll block the water off there just so it doesn’t completely flood this abandoned mine shaft I’m interested in finding although we have just found a cave spider spawner so yep I figured some poison was going to be on the way pretty quickly just drop a torch on top of that one Nice and easy at least we have found one very close to our spawn location if we want to turn this into any sort of string Farm but oh my goodness look at this I love when abandoned mine shafts generate out in the open like this with chains suspending them from the ceiling Instead of too many floor supports there are obviously some places where there are logs that have generated but man what a cool looking place and I’ve just spotted an even cooler looking Place although it’s not one we’re going to approach today down there oh my gosh I Saw the telltale signs of skulk blocks indicating that there was a deep dark biome but I was not expecting there to be a structure down there that is a sign that below our sacred Mountain up until this point at least we have an ancient city where the warden resides and other Things besides okay we are gonna have a bit of a time in that place but we’re not gonna tackle that today much as I want to die over right in there at the moment we are going to prepare for that carefully in a future episode for now The other thing to note is that this drip Stone cave has also generated downwards into the lower cave level of the world there’s loads of deep slate around that is the area where we can expect to start finding more precious resources like Redstone and diamonds there’s going to be some pretty cool Stuff down here the drip Stone cave generation is also taken over some areas of this abandoned mine shaft where once again we can expect to find a few cave spider spawners another useful thing to know about drip Stone caves is that they are abundant sources of copper ore even If you haven’t found a huge vein of copper you’ll probably find a lot more copper ore in a drip Stone cave than you do in any other environment just affording the player a lot of opportunities to get hold of large quantities of copper if you want to use It as a building block oh and we have found what might actually be one of our first blocks of emerald ore I think I may have some of them already but these are always worth grabbing to me nope that is our first emerald ore okay and I’m gonna silk touch any blocks of Emerald ore I find instead of fortuning them because it’s so easy to get emeralds from Villages that I find the ore block immensely more valuable than just getting between one and four emeralds from a block it’s not like Redstone or lapis where you can get up To 20 or 32 of them you end up with very minimal emeralds a couple of Trades with a farmer or something like that is going to get you just as many emerald ore blocks on the other hand are significantly more rare than that oh okay we are getting down into levels Where the deep dark biome is rising to meet us and once again I’m going to avoid that as best I can yeah so emerald ore can only be found underneath a mountain biomes that includes things like Meadows things which are technically part of the mountain ranges The sort of sub biomes of mountains but either way you can only find it in veins of one or two below five different biomes in the world which makes it a very cool thing to find they are probably the rarest all Block in the game in actual fact the rarest all Block In the game is probably deep slate emeralds since emeralds generate more on the mountain peaks they generate more frequently up there towards the summit and as you descend into the world the emerald generation becomes less and less frequent until it stops somewhere shortly below y zero so you’re only Typically going to find blocks of deep slate emerald in deep slate layers as they transition out of the normal Stone cave layers and by that point the likelihood of finding any emerald ore is vanishingly small so the likelihood of finding deep slate Emerald is very very low even lower than deep slate coal Which is probably the second rarest all Block in the game but that generates in much larger veins with emeralds you’re only ever getting one or two so since we can see it from here we actually have a decent vantage point to take a look at This biome I can tell you a little about the deep dark before we go and do a full episode on it at some point in future you’ll find the floor generates with all of these skulk blocks and skulk veins around these kind of twinkling but menacing looking blocks a lot lot of Weird organic blocks coming out of them over here we have a couple of the waving fins of skulk sensors next to those is a skulk Shrieker and up there is a skulk Catalyst the sensors are actually Redstone components activated by vibrations that happen near them so generally speaking sounds when they Happen near them will activate them but your footsteps or you’re placing blocks nearby or anything like that is going to send a vibration to the skulk sensor and it’s going to relay those to other skulk sensors nearby it’s used as a redstone component cannot be overstated because that allows for effectively Wireless Redstone connectivity as the signal passes between them but if the signal is passed to this bony spiky looking block here the skulk Shrieker it will emit a sound and that sound can potentially summon the warden the warden is a very tough mob to fight in fact the best Defense against the warden is to sneak away from from it but the shriekers will basically give you three strikes and after that on the fourth shriek they will summon the wardens so if you happen to trip one of those while you’re caving it’s usually a good idea to turn around And go the other way the skulk catalysts on the other hand are potentially responsible for all of the skulk spreading around here if a mob is killed next to one of these skull catalysts then no XP will drop and instead the XP will convert the surrounding area into Skulk blocks those can be mined to regain XP in small quantities if you need them the best tool for taking out all skulk blocks is a hoe and if you want to obtain them you will need a hoe that has the silk touch enchantment any other tools or a hoe without silk touch Will simply break them and you’ll receive XP for them but a lot of the time especially with these more specialized blocks you’ll want to be gathering those for some interesting stuff we’re gonna do later if you should find yourself in a deep dark biome the best solution is to sneak because the Skulk sensors will not detect your footsteps if you are sneaking around just be careful of jumping around too recklessly or taking full damage nearby or anything like that because the sensors can detect that and I hope it makes sense that I’m telling you all of this ahead of an episode where we Actually explore the deep dark but I recognize that a lot of you folks are Keen explorers and you’ll probably want to go looking in caves where you might encounter the deep dark before I’m ready to explain it to you but in the event that you do happen to wander down into The deep dark keep that shift key on speed dial and good luck what an amazing location though I think that’s really cool we are definitely going to come back to this place and use it and oh I’m glad I managed to get a quick Vantage Point here because I’ve Just spotted another block of emerald ore that I will sneak out of the wall before we leave well the Moon is rising and I’m gonna head back to my house so we can sleep and then we’re going to go in search of the other biome that was Added with the caves and cliffs update we’re gonna take another quick look at Lush caves in order to find the Lush caves we’re going to return to the Jungle that we’ve discovered previously because I’m fairly certain that around the back here was where we acquired the Moss that I ended up using for my starter house roof there is a lush cave environment somewhere below this and while it might seem obvious that a lush cave environment could be found below a jungle as far as I’m aware there is actually very little correlation between Surface biomes and Cave biomes you are just as likely to find a lush cave under a desert or a snowplanes as you are a jungle it’s just that sometimes coincidentally these environments overlap and this right here isn’t a lush cave but what I a fantastic view down Into that flooded cave down there once again sort of similar to the drip Stone cake but with natural stone formations those pillars are supporting the cabin floor and is it me or has there been an Enderman in basically every cave we visited in this video that’s not exactly A surprise I mean it’s a dark area and they are mobs that can spawn in dark areas but I don’t know something about having an Enderman around really makes me feel like I’m being watched I guess when glowing eyes are the main feature of a mob what would you expect but wait Oh from the outside it didn’t look like the environment was going to be like this but we have stumbled on the Lush cave I was talking about and what a beautiful place aside from the zombies I mean just gonna take out these skeletons so we don’t have too many rude Interruptions as we step into this idyllic Lush Cave Valley oh speaking of interruptions there’s going to be a couple of those around for sure and the typical features of these Lush caves you’ll find are clay beds on the floor lots of water around a bunch of moss on The floor with Azalea growing from it from the clay you will find these drip leaf plants growing and often they’ll be growing in the water there’ll be a couple of varieties of them the larger drip leaf with these big Lily Pad sized tops to them and the small drip Leaf Which will typically just be standing here in the water now the big drip Leaf actually acts almost like a little parkour challenge for you because if you stand on them for too long the head tilts down and drops you off of it resetting once you’ve not been standing On it for a minute or two and these can be harvested simply by breaking them with whatever you have to hand even your hand will do the small drip leaf on the other hand needs to be harvested with shears in order to get hold of it so I’ll check my Ender Chest to see if I brought some shears with me which I did perfect we can take some home with us as long as the creepers don’t blow it up anyway there we go that’s him dealt with once again we’re going to Shear the Small drip leaf and it’s just a decorative plant but if you bone meal it it can grow into large drip Leaf of course once you have some big drip Leaf it’s absolutely possible to bone meal it yourself in order to get more of so I find that the small drip Leaf much like Emerald ore is worth keeping for decoration now if like me you’ve stumbled on down here with a decent supply of coal but no wood on you then we can probably grab one of these Azalea saplings take it out into a nice open space maybe bring a moss block so that We can use this and then we’re going to spam it with bone meal so it grows into a full-size azalea tree and then we can use the oak wood from that to light up our way with some more torches as we get further into this Lush cave environment Though we’re gonna find that a lot of these torches are not super necessary because dangling from the ceiling will find lots of glow Berry Vines these cave Vines as they’re known are the source of glowberries which can be used to regrow them obviously in this environment right Here they’re all growing out over this Chasm which once again contains a deep dark biome in the depths of it Glow squid aren’t related to the deep dark by the way this glow squid has just spawned in a water source down here so I’m going to take the glow ink but the aesthetic Is kind of similar I will admit anyway if we Traverse this Lush cave around to this little side Plateau over here we should be able to take a closer look at the cave Vines and the glow berries we’ve encountered these in the past when we were looking for Moss but right Clicking on these berries will collect them for us we can start a new cave Vine by attaching the berries to the underside of a block like this and Bone mealing them will not grow the vine but it will grow some more glow berries which you can just hold down right click In order to farm and then placing more glow berries will grow the vine if you want one of these Vines to stop growing at any point you can right click the tip of the Vine with shears making them a really versatile choice for aesthetic decoration in natural builds whether They are grown on the tip of the plant or further up the vine glowberries always give off the same light level which I think is 13 inside the block so really 12 as we are standing around it it’s slightly dimmer than a torch or a lantern but provides pretty adequate Lighting around here as you notice I’ve not had to deal with any mobs as soon as I came over to this place one of the other exciting things about coming here to Lush caves is the inhabitants because there are some mobs which are native to Lush caves and you’ll typically find Them swimming around the water pools in these environments I’m not just talking about the tropical fish which will also generate in Lush caves I’m talking about these little critters over here excellent bottles will appear in these pools and they come in a variety of different colors there’s a couple of Yellow ones here and I believe I spotted a pink one there as well there’s even baby axolotls around here which is kind of adorable if you have a bucket of water it’s even possible to scoop up an axolotl getting you the cutest Predator advancement and you can take the Axolotl Back wherever you want to in the same way that you can move fish around using buckets there are four different colors of Axolotl that will spawn naturally there is a white one with blue and pink fins and there’s also a brown one that we haven’t seen yet but breeding them Together can occasionally very very rarely produce a blue Axolotl that does not spawn naturally in the wild it can only be acquired through breeding them one thing you will notice about axolotls is that they love being in the water and while they are amphibious they will be Able to get out onto land occasionally if they stay on land for too long they will start to take a little bit of damage they effectively dry out if they’re on land for too long so you’ll find them typically wanting to get back into a water source and it’s worth Bearing that in mind if you plan on taking an axolotl home and keeping it as a pet the last thing I want to point out from these Lush cave environments are the Spore blossoms these massive pink flowers that you’ll find dangling from the roof here Spore blossoms are responsible for these Spore particles The green particles that you see floating through the air around here that doesn’t do anything they don’t provide any kind of you know passive status effect or anything it’s simply an aesthetic thing and picking up one of these Spore blossoms and moving it allows you to control where that effect Appears so I’m going to peel her up here with the wood planks that we got from that azalea tree we’re going to snag ourselves a single Spore Blossom and while we’re up here actually we can notice the effect of these skulk sensors tripping thanks to a bat that seems to Be flying around there in the deep dark biome I’ll remove the Spyglass overlay so we can see a little bit more of that you do not need to worry about other mobs tripping the skulk sensors though whilst they can still light up the skulk sensors and that will still produce a Redstone signal if you’re using them as a redstone component it won’t alert the shriekers to your presence shriekers are only affected by nearby player activity but yikes we have found a lot of deep dark today I’m actually slightly scared of the place even now so let me grab This we can just break that with our hands we don’t need shears for the Spore Blossom or anything and there’s still plenty of particles in this area thanks to the abundance of Spore blossoms growing on the roof but much the same way as you find them in Lush cave Spore Blossoms have to be placed on the underside of a block they can’t be placed on the top or sides of a block so we’re actually going to be fairly precise about where we place them if we want the aesthetic look of those particles floating in the air unlike the Dripstone caves Lush caves don’t have any greater chances of all blocks generating here so there’s no extra lapis or anything like that if anything this is a place that you could come to harvest a lot of clay if you wanted to get it from the natural environment hero That clay balls if you harvest them in large quantities can make a decent trade with a stonemason villager and of course clay can be used for a variety of other things smelting it into Tara Koto turning the clay balls into bricks so might be a good place to come if you Need a bit more clay personally though I’m here for the plant I want to take a bunch of small drip Leaf back with me and we can use that for a bit of decoration the big drip Leaf we can Farm more or less renewably now that we have A couple of pieces of it and some bone meal and at some point I’ll come back here with another bucket so we can pick up a friend for our Axolotl here and we might even attempt to breed a Blue Axolotl although the chances of it happening are so slim that it’s going to Be a heck of a grind if we try it right here is another example of the Axolotl coloring though that I mentioned we’ve got a blue and pink one here I really like the little gradient that they have on their fins it’s such a cool look So now you might be thinking okay we’ve seen the caves what about the cliffs tell us about the cliffs well judging by the back of our home Mountain here Minecraft is capable of some pretty cool looking Cliffs sometimes there is even a cave within a cliff caves and cliffs Ception but in actuality The Cliffs that they’re talking about in the caves and cliffs update are actually the mountain biomes themselves and those appear in a variety of forms most of which are actually represented by this island over here that has a pretty large mountain range on it and as the temperature of The regional biomes transitions from cold or temperate into warm you’ll find that the mountain biome itself changes and that’s something I wanted to highlight towards the end of this episode so around here you will find that there aren’t really any Meadow biomes to speak of but Meadow biomes Really form the lowest of the mountain biomes they’re the ones that are just typically plateaus or they are the first stage of a transition up into some of the taller Mountain biomes in colder areas you will get snowy slopes or Grove biomes those are the ones in which Powder snow and snow blocks will generate and they typically lead to a frozen peak biome up here where a lot of packed ice and snow is going to form but you’ll notice the other half of this mountain here has a different formation that is a Stony Peaks biome instead of a Frozen Peaks biome and so you’ll find different resources there as you can tell from the borderline between these two biomes it’s a lot easier to tell when there are resources on the surface in a Stony Peaks biome compared to a frozen Peaks Frozen Peaks are obviously Covered by that layer of ice and you might need to dig below that in order to find any resources whereas in the Stony Peaks biomes loads of iron is just sitting here on the surface and we’re likely to find a lot of coal as well as I mentioned previously emerald ore Generation is also increased with higher elevations but what I’m really looking for is up here in this white deposit of material this is calcite calcite you might already be familiar with from geodes and this is a really great place to find it considering that calcite is quite an attractive looking block it Sort of looks like a marbly quartzy kind of texture it’s a good go-between if you’re building with things like diorite and quartz blocks and you want something to blend smoother between the two but calcite is available here in much larger quantities than it is in a geode and Once you have an efficiency 5 pickaxe you can mine this stuff instantaneously meaning that if you want to build with lots of it it’ll take you no time at all to acquire a few Stacks from this area and if you’ve found a large enough vein of calcite then the mountain will barely Notice it’s gone we also get to take a look at the scenery from up here what a nice view into a basin where there is a jungle biome it’s really tempting to think of these almost like volcanic calderas where a volcano has been inactive for a while and has left lots Of lush nutrient-rich terrain for the jungle biome to really take hold obviously that’s not the case in Minecraft’s actual General Asian and volcanoes don’t actually exist as part of Minecraft’s terrain generation at least at the time of this recording but if you want to gather yourself a lot of Magma blocks and lava that might also be an interesting build for a mountain range like this if you have the temptation to follow through and clear a large area of this in favor of putting in something more volcanic and of course every time I spot a block of emerald or I can’t help but Harvest it we need to silk touch one of these we almost got one from the Lush cave but it faked me out it was some Vines covering some Stone either way we now have a little bit of extra emerald ore and we even Have enough calcite that I can add that to the filters in my storage system so quite excited about that but with the sun setting over the distant mountain range I think that’s what we’ll call it for this video I’ve had fun exploring this world and getting to know a few More of the landmarks and hopefully you’ve learned a little bit about the biomes that were added with the 118 caves and cliffs update we will talk about the applications of some of them in the near future because there’s lots of stuff we can do with dripstone and Maybe in the next episode we’ll go and look at geodes which were also added around the same time in the meantime thank you so much for watching the Minecraft Survival Guide my name has been Pixar riffs don’t forget to leave a like on this video If you enjoyed it Subscribe if you want to see more and I’ll see you The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20! This tutorial will show you where to find the cave and mountain biomes added in the Caves & Cliffs update – Dripstone Caves, Lush Caves, and Stony Peaks!
In Dripstone Caves, we find pointed dripstone and dripstone blocks, and we’ll look at their uses (and how to farm them!) in a future video. We find lots of copper ore while exploring, and stumble into an epic abandoned mineshaft!
Both the Dripstone Cave and the Lush Cave give us a sneak peek at the Deep Dark biome, which was added in the Wild Update – and below the Dripstone Cave there are even signs of an Deep Dark Ancient City…
In the Lush Cave, we revisit the mechanics of moss, azalea, and glow berries while looking at new resources like dripleaf and small dripleaf, capturing our first axolotl, and gathering spore blossoms!
Finally, we head up a nearby mountain to a Stony Peaks biome where we can gather calcite, grab some emerald ore, and look around at the landscape the Caves & Cliffs update introduced to Minecraft.
