Hello everyone my name is pixelriffs and welcome back to the minecraft survival guide i hope you’re all having a good day in today’s episode we are gonna look a little bit more at lighting around here because i’ve encountered a couple of problems namely that my crane up here Is a little dark in spots and i have noticed a couple of mobs namely some creepers and skeletons appearing in some of the darker sections now we’ve got a lantern on one side we’ve got a campfire on that side both of which are giving a Little bit of light and i have stashed a couple of torches around the place but i feel like there’s some more interesting aesthetic ways we can work light into this structure actually adding to the aesthetic instead of having to add light sources that honestly including the lantern i was expecting to take away Again afterwards and we can still avoid a bunch of stuff spawning on here and dropping off onto us and ruining our day that encounter with the creeper the other day as you can see there are still some creepers spawning up there in the darker spaces it’s kind of rewired my Perspective on what i want to do with this place i want to make sure that a lot more of this cave is lit up but i do want to do it in more subtle ways and so for that we’re turning to a block which i should have some of around here i Believe there was some growing i mean there’s some down there on the pillars of the cave already but i believe there was still some natural glow lichen growing down here in the dark and yes it’s over here the reason i couldn’t spot this before is because the torches Are lighting this area slightly too well so glow-liking is something you’ve probably encountered in caves already giving off a dim light it’s about half the light level of the average torch although for mob spawning that still makes it pretty effective at preventing mob spawns so by bone mealing this we Can actually grow it to the blocks adjacent to it although it doesn’t grow any further than that from bone mealing a single block and then if we grab some shears and float on back down here we can collect this glow lichen and use it to light up some sections of the cave so Glow-liking is going to allow us to keep the cave atmosphere from around here it’s going to look very organic but it’s going to allow us to light up some areas with the equivalent of what torches used to be in the previous updates because if you place one of these on a block and You step into it like so you’ll notice this gives off seven block lights i had to move a lantern from over here but seven block light is enough to mob proof an area up to a radius of seven blocks although obviously on the diagonal angles it’s going to be a little bit Less but that’s more or less the equivalent of what torches used to do back when mobs used to spawn at light levels of seven and below while obviously we can functionally light up the area with light sources which are a lot more powerful the glow liking will Allow us to do that in much more subtle ways and we could just lay a bunch of this down on the ground bone meal at a few times maybe continue to bone meal it as it spreads out this way and then shear the entire thing one block at a Time but i have encountered a couple of slightly better ways to farm glow like it and that’s where dispensers come in because of course dispensers are able to use bone meal on something in front of them which can react to bone meal so for example if we load up this dispenser With bone meal and we attach some glow like into the front of it activating this dispenser will grow the glow lichen onto an adjacent block surface which as of right now seems to be the top of the dispenser we can block the glow lichen from wrapping around to the other faces Of the dispenser simply by putting something on those surfaces already like buttons here for example now we can pretty much guarantee that the glow lichen will appear here in front of the dispenser and something interesting happens when it does i’m going to toss out the rest of this glow like in Temporarily to show you that when we break this piece of glow lichen it actually only breaks once because it’s kind of similar to vines where if vines grow up around a corner they’re still occupying the same block space and they count as one block so if you break them You end up breaking both sections of the vine in the case of those vines they typically only drop one piece of vine but in this case the glow lichen has dropped two and now we place another temporary solid block here and we bone meal the glow lichen a couple more times It will grow onto the face of this block here and when we shear it we will get three and knowing this is going to allow us to farm glow lichen in much larger quantities we will need a couple more dispensers for this hence the fact that I’ve got a little bit of string from fighting spiders further down in the dark areas of the cave we’re going to set up an automatic glow lichen farm or at least a semi-automatic one the player is going to have to stand in front of it and left click with some shears to break The glow lichen but this is going to be extraordinarily fast and there’ll be a couple of secrets about how exactly that’s going to work first of all though i want to show you something else because we have our little patch of crimson and warped fungus growing now I’m gonna have to move this one because it’s a little bit too close to the base of the crane which i’m still working on there’s a little bit of a hollow section on the side there but something my twitch chat reminded me of over the course of my tuesday live stream where We were chopping wood is that an efficient c5 netherite or diamond hoe can instantly mine nether wart blocks and warped warp blocks which is going to make the process of farming these woods a whole lot easier which means we can generate a lot of bone meal quite Quickly and as of right now we’re actually generating a surplus of bone meal from the amount of wood farming i’ve been doing over this week so it’s entirely possible that we can use the bone meal output from this farm to also power our glow lichen farm and once we Have our glow lichen farm up and running we can add a bunch of aesthetic light sources to dark areas like this crane which will blend in quite well with the surroundings and make sure these areas are adequately lit so that we don’t encounter any more mob spawns So i’ve scratched up a few more redstone components and i think down here next to our warped and crimson farm is probably where we’re going to set up this glow lichen from in fact yeah we’ll clear out a little area here and we’ll have it Right here so we need to clear some of the stuff out of our inventory first because i just have tons of random junk in here right now we’ll just try and pair all of this down to the stuff that we actually need so we need three dispensers two observers and a sticky Piston so that we can set up a clock similar to the one that we have set up over there for the warped and crimson farm a couple of pieces of redstone dust some building blocks a bunch of bone meal and a couple of pieces of glow-like And we’ve got a decent amount that we’ve already farmed up but we’ll need at least two to get us started here the first thing we’re gonna do is get the dispensers off the ground because i figure if the dispensers are going to have the glow lichen on their front Faces then we don’t want to shear that away because that’s going to remove the glow liking and then the dispensers aren’t going to do anything so we want it to grow basically downwards onto the block below in order to fill in this third space we can actually dig a hole In the floor and place a dispenser facing upwards and we load all of these with bone meal so that each dispenser ends up firing at exactly the same time bone mealing the glow lichen and causing it to grow we actually only need to start with this face of the dispenser Here and this face here now naturally the dispensers are going to grow around the outside of themselves with glow-liking as well which you can just let happen if you want to but i’m going to block the glow lichen from growing which is a sentence i’ve had to say Multiple times by placing buttons on the side of the dispensers and the side of this block of andesite here because that will guarantee that the glow lichen only grows down into this space this dispenser here is going to potentially grow it outwards to the blocks on either Side so we’re going to take those out and replace them with non-solid blocks i think in this case for the purposes of this farm looking kind of cool we’re going to use stairs so if we put a stair there and a stair there then we’re not going to see any glow-like and growing Onto those spaces because it has to grow onto the solid face of a block we’ll put some andesite blocks in here at the corners as well so that it looks a little bit more formal and i think i’ll probably just block in the water sources around here because we don’t really need Them for anything you know what we’ll mix up the wood types on the buttons because i need buttons on the tops of these as well to make sure the glow-liking doesn’t grow over the top so how about we put one on there and one on there in order to activate all three of These dispensers at once we need a little bit of redstone circuitry that’s gonna go around the back here if we power one block in between these two dispensers then it will fire both of them at the same time but we do want to power both of those and the dispenser in The floor at the same time as well and trust me i’ve tried doing this with the power coming from the alternating sides of our observer clock and the ticking noise really gets irritating if it’s ticking kind of offbeat with each other so we want all of them to get powered at The same time to do that we’re going to dig a hole in the floor here and we’re going to make sure that there is a block next to this dispenser right here we’re going to use an andesite block there just so it’s recognizably part of the circuit then we’ll put some redstone Dust there and above that we’ll put a block and we’ll put some redstone dust on top of that block as well and now we need to make sure this block here gets redstone power that can just be the output from this observer if we have an observer facing that way when we push Another observer face to face with this one it’s going to activate all three of the dispensers at once because it will power this block and the block will power the two pieces of redstone dust either side of it so we’ll place an observer facing this way so that it Faces in towards the other observer and we’ll put a sticky piston right here that way we can activate it basically from the front of the farm just by having maybe an endocyte block there and a lever on top of it so right now when we switch this on nothing’s going to Happen in the farm because we haven’t loaded these up with bonemeal yet but i’m gonna grab enough iron for four hoppers and we’re gonna grab a couple of barrels that we can use to stash some bonemeal in we can put a hopper into the side of this dispenser here we can put a Hopper in there as well and we’ll still need to make sure there’s a hopper going to this dispenser at the front we’re going to have two of those actually running in series so that they attach to the side of this dispenser now we’ll put a barrel on top of each of these hoppers And we can use these barrels to fill up the farm with bone meal we’ll split up all of these bone blocks into their bone meal components and we’ll try and fill these more or less evenly putting in a few stacks at a time there we go i Managed five stacks in each one and in theory we could just bring over more bone meal from the mob farm or create more bone meal by farming a bit more nether wart over here but now the bone meal is starting to load into each of these dispensers i can show you the farm In action all we need to do is pull this lever and immediately it will start to cover this square here in glo lichen which we can farm in pretty large quantities every time we break this it ends up farming three glow liking at once we have a ton of it amassing in our Inventory already so just for demonstration purposes i’m gonna tuck this away in the shulker box we’re gonna activate the farm one more time i’m gonna open up an inventory space and you can see that if we stand here and just hold down left click we’re getting three At a time and we’re getting a bunches of glow lichen anytime the farm is left running but it isn’t able to produce more glow-like and the dispenser will fail and the amount of bone meal in here will not go down once again dispensers won’t use bone meal if it will have no Effect on the block that’s in front of them so we can pretty much guarantee that we’re not going to waste any bone meal in producing glow-liking in this farm we can however make it ever so slightly faster and for that i’ll have to take a quick trip to the village and Meet you back at spawn so here’s a fun fact which i’m sure many of you knew but i’m going to explain it nonetheless did you know that you cannot enchant shears in an enchanting table but you can still apply enchantments to shias because unlike some of the other Tools in the game shears can only be enchanted using books and right here i have a very special book that i’ve been saving for a very special tool we have an efficiency for unbreaking piercing sharpness book and we won’t be able to apply each of these to one single item But unbreaking three and efficiency four have a pretty significant overlap they apply to basically any tool that we can use to break blocks like a pickaxe a shovel an axe i’m going to put them on a set of shears so let’s see how many levels this will cost us all seven of The levels i currently possess so we will need to go back to the village and get a few more levels or get some more levels another way but we can put efficiency for an unbreaking three on shears and in fact unbreaking three can be applied to anything which has Durability and the same goes for mending so we could even apply unbreaking and mending to the shield i’m holding if we wanted to the reason i went back to the village already was so i could get a mending book to apply to these shears as Well and i also want to see if i can get hold of an efficiency 4 book so we can upgrade the efficiency of these shears to level 5. looking at what i’ve got in here i don’t seem to have one in my possession already we’ve got a few other Level 4 enchantments but none of them is efficiency there may even be some that i fished up from the river a while ago so we could always take a look at the enchanted books chest in my storage down here and as luck would have it i do have An efficiency 4 book with smite 4 and sweeping edge 3 on it i think that’s the only one i’ve got down here so chances are i might be able to buy one from my villagers and get a bit of xp in the process that i’ll need to combine them In fact one of the things i could buy while i’m here at the village is some bottles of enchanting that the cleric will trade to me and did we get any of our librarians with an efficiency for book i’m trying to look through their trades right now i think i settled on Unbreaking instead of efficiency yeah it looks like we don’t have efficiency for elsewhere so i might have to try getting that from the enchantment table or even sacrifice that book that had smite and sweeping edge on it as well but that shouldn’t matter a whole bunch because the difference between efficiency 4 and Efficiency 5 for what we’re doing is honestly not that huge back here in the cave of wonders i don’t know if i had crafted an anvil over here but i don’t think i had either way we’re going to make another one and i’m going to apply This mending book to my set of shears because for three levels we can now have an efficiency unbreaking and mending set of shears that’s going to last four times as long as an average set of shears would and be repairable with xp the efficiency is going to help us with The speed at which we mine glow lichen because while sheers will naturally shear stuff like leaves almost instantly with things like vines and glow lichen efficiency actually makes a difference the vines over here on this side of the cave can be harvested pretty quickly with efficiency and when we get to our Glow lichen farm down here this is going to be a revolutionary amount of speed for this particular contraption once again let’s throw all of the glow lichen in here we’re going to throw the vines in there as well and i’m going to leave an inventory space open to see how fast We gather this glow like in let’s open up a bit more of the inventory actually let’s have a few spots there to show how fast this farm is going to work now so we’ll switch it on it’s going to start pumping out the bone meal and then We can stand here gathering it at hyper speed at this point i’m pretty sure we are gathering the glow lichen as fast as the farm is able to generate it efficiency 5 might add a little bit more to this but quite frankly we are breaking it instantly anyway and it Takes a matter of seconds to fill up our hot bar with three stacks of glow lichen and that seems to have chewed through a fair amount of the bone meal here because of course this is producing three glow lichen for three bone meals so it’s still a one one-to-one Conversion process but being able to farm it three at a time is honestly the fastest we can farm glow like in and now we can have boxes and boxes of the stuff if we want to use it as ambient lighting here in the cave and you know what i do So i think we’re going to go and light up a bit more of this crane maybe throw in a bit of glow-liking around the base here as well and try and weed out some of those darker spots that are going to be spawning mobs if we leave them Unattended oh and if we want to repair these shears since they have such a low durability the amount of xp provided by a bottle of enchanting is pretty ideal for just throwing a couple of those on the ground and repairing the shears while bottles of enchanting only usually Provide enough xp for you to go from level zero to level one they really don’t provide a huge amount so you wouldn’t want to use them on something that had a huge amount of durability like a near the right pickaxe because that’s going to take a long time to Repair and a lot of bottles of enchanting they’re actually pretty useful for repairing things with low durability like shias golden armor and elytra so let’s fly on up to here let’s land gracefully atop this crane and on some of the solid blocks we’re going to place just a little bit of glow-like in Here and there as though to imply that the crane has started to corrode a little bit from being exposed to the open air as though this deep slate is more of a metallic kind of construct maybe it’ll come up the side of this a little way wrap around here we’ll put a Little bit under here as well and this is going to light the crane with a dim but even light which will still prevent mob spawns perhaps down here where the crane is under a little bit more stress a larger patch of it has grown out from The crane and it won’t really make sense for it to be on the wood if we’re thinking of this as like a metallic corrosion but i like that i think that’s going to provide a nice amount of detail to the crane here and break up the texture of the polished deep slate as Well so let’s step back and take a look at this from a distance yeah you know what that’s pretty good i think we could probably do with a little bit more of it down here but it also lights it up in a really nice way that means the whole Thing is a bit more visible and stands out from the darker background of the rest of the cave and that’s not the only place around here we can use glow lichen either because i do want to have it creeping out of the water i’ve already Got it coming up out of the water down here as though there’s mineral deposits left by whatever material is in this lake and i think we could probably do that around the shore of the lake here as well so that we can have a little bit Of light in these darker areas where i usually see things like skeletons and creepers spawning when i’m not nearby you can even waterlog glow lichen which makes it possible to place it on the side of these leaves down here under the water and light those up from below Making this a pretty atmospheric area of the cave now and while it doesn’t provide as much rendered light as torches do it provides as much spawn proofing as torch is used to in previous versions of minecraft so each of those is going to be blocking spawns in a Seven block radius from the glow lichen and i think we’re going to leave this down here on the cave floor as though it’s some piece of industrial machinery that’s maybe grown over a little bit with time and it can be a kind of aesthetic addition to the cave while It’s actually very functional for us as a player allowing us to farm a bunch of resources using our brand new incredibly efficient shears and folks i think that’s where we’ll wrap things up for this episode of the minecraft survival guide i hope you’ve enjoyed this look at Farming glow lichen with me and enjoy building this contraption in your own worlds if you want to give a The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 2 continues! This tutorial will take a closer look at Glow Lichen, which is a natural and subtle solution to spawn-proofing! It can be placed on blocks with solid faces, lighting the area in a 7 block radius – basically making it as effective as torches in previous updates. We cover a simple redstone contraption which allows us to farm 3 Glow Lichen at a time – and we make it even faster by adding enchantments to shears for the first time!
