This is Pixel Zoo, the show that dives into the wildlife of some of our favorite video games, But what can video game animals tell us about animals in the real world? Well, quite a lot, apparently. Today, we’re looking at one of the world’s most popular games, Minecraft, Just like the real world, Minecraft has a huge diversity of different types of habitats. You’ve got icy tundras that are inhabited by dangerous polar bears to sweltering jungles, which have my favorite yes, ocelots. The world is filled with many interesting animals to spend time with, And the makers of Minecraft Mojang have taken their inspiration directly from the real world, And mobs have some incredibly lifelike behaviours. Here are our five favourite creatures of the Minecraft world. Polar bears live in the snow covered icy biomes of Minecraft. These blocky bears share a lot of the same characteristics As their furry, real life cousins. They’re a solitary species, spending their lives alone on the ice. unless they have a cub, Something that you might want to watch out for. Polar bear mothers are very protective of their cubs. When it comes to hunting. They’re pretty lifelike, too. If a real polar bear finds a seal locked underneath ice, it can stand up on it’s feet and power down into the ice in a powerful blow. I mean, that’s one way to break the ice – and in the game, this is how they attack other animals and players. They also have a particular distaste for foxes in the Minecraft world. I mean, maybe they’re just annoyed that their lunch keeps getting stolen. I mean, I like foxes, but if they took my bagel, we would have words. Foxes are known to sneakily steal food by scavenging polar bear kills. This is one way they survive in this inhospitable freezing habitat. Ok, I’m officially freezing. Can we go somewhere a little bit warmer now? I don’t know. Like the jungle? Home to another amazing predator, the ocelot. This big cat species is found in the jungle biome, Much like in real life, where it can be found in the rainforests of South America, like the Amazon. Much like the Polar Bear, this right angled beauty is a voracious predator and will actually hunt other animals in Minecraft. It’ll carefully sneak up on its prey and pounce. It is the perfect ambush predator. In previous versions of the game, Oclelots could be tamed using food to turn them into domestic cats. Just as we learn more about the natural world and constantly update our knowledge, Minecraft has too – and Ocelots no longer do this. Although a bit controversial, some scientists do believe that the domestic cat came from the African Wildcat, although there probably were multiple sources. And further than that, recent studies suggest that humans and rodent hunting cats formed a relationship and lived alongside each other for thousands of years before real domestication. I mean, cats essentially just decided to domesticate themselves and who can blame them? Once they figured out that Muggins here was going to feed them all day and rub their belly. I mean, it’s no contest, really. Another animal that you can domesticate in Minecraft is one with a bit more of an obvious descent, which is dogs from Wolves. Wolves in Minecraft are aggressive animals and will hunt in packs. This makes them very dangerous in the game if you anger them and they use their pack mentality just as well as they do in the wild. this allows them to work as a team to bring down bigger prey like deer or moose. And in Minecraft, they can use this technique to turn the player into a quick snack. When domesticated, these scary wolves become soppy dogs in red collars as wolves became the dogs we know today. their appearance changed so much, some of the breeds are almost unrecognizable. Another of our favorite blocky creatures are the dolphins. Arguably the cutest animals in Minecraft. These playful mammals are found in ocean habitats, which are full of other amazing sea creatures from pufferfish to squid. Dolphins in Minecraft are very inquisitive and curious, just like dolphins in real life. When objects are thrown at them, they’ll play with them. Dolphins just love to play and with anything around them, be that coral or well, sadly, ocean plastics. Minecraft dolphins appear in groups called pods. This gives them many benefits, like more eyes to look out for predators or being able to hunt Together. Rarely, you can also find what’s called super pods, which might be made up of hundreds or even thousands of dolphins together. The sound effects use for dolphins vocalizations are actually real recordings of dolphins. These clicks and squeaks can be used by a dolphin to echolocate, listening to the sounds bouncing back To gain information about objects around them just like a bat. This may help them in water where they can’t see. Like you can see in Minecraft, the light in the water disappears quickly, so being able to see in the dark is a huge benefit. Our last favourite thing about the animal world of Minecraft is just the huge biodiversity across the game. Just like in the real world, Minecraft, many different habitats are teeming with life. The coral reefs are full of lots of different types of fish species, of turtles and even axolotls, Which is a salamander with external gills. There are grasslands with foxes, donkeys, pigs and bees. Forests with wolves, ocelots, pandas and parrots. Even the cliff edges are inhabited by mountain goats, and the behaviours displayed are equally as amazing. Chameleons that change color squid that squirt ink when attacked And puffer fish that inflate themselves when you go near them. Minecraft is packed full of animals with incredible behaviours, And it’s shown there’s plenty of amazing animal attributes in this amazing pixel zoo.
