It seems like in the past decade or so a lot of franchises that have had their breakout games become a massive success have gone on to attempt to break into other genre as with spin-offs Minecraft being the most obvious one given the topic of this video but you can see with Other franchises such as League of Legends and more recently fortnite too like obviously the cash cows are still within the flagship titles of those franchises but it’s interesting to see what Publishers are doing when it comes to Flushing out the IP when delving into the world of spin-offs we already Covered Minecraft story mode earlier on this channel link up top if you missed it wink wink but Minecraft has gone on to try a number of other things to varying degrees of success there’s of course a recently released Minecraft Legends which um is definitely a unique Take on the RTS genre we can say that for sure there’s Minecraft Earth which tried to jump on the Pokémon go bandwagon of augmented reality mobile games but it’s also been delisted for some time now and there’s even a second season for Minecraft story mode which judging by the comments of my previous Video is at least somewhat better but is also in a situation where it’s been delisted and physical copies are rather rare to come by so this is going to be the last stop on our Minecraft Marathon for the time being because all the other games in the franchise are either Completely unavailable very hard to find or just not very interesting at all however there was one game that I’ve heard above all the other ones that I do think probably deserves a little bit more recognition and that’s the game that we’re going to be talking about today Minecraft dungeons Minecraft’s Take on the arpg genre taking what you loved with Diablo and then adding the accessibility and the world of Minecraft Let’s get this out of the way really quick the action RPG genre is my favorite type of game I grew up playing games such as Kingdom Hearts and Castlevania Symphony of the Night and when I was a teenager in my early 20s I really grew to love playing games from the series that started to become really popular like Fallout Elder Scrolls The Witcher Mass Effect and one of my favorite series of all time Dark Souls These games all had very different styles of gameplay but the core mechanic of character building and then taking them to encounter enemies in a realtime action-oriented style of combat just clicked for me though the arpg G fans there may be one franchise that you notice that I emitted from that list one That is often considered one of the first big pioneers of the genre Diablo surprisingly enough I have never actually played a Diablo game before and before you get pissed off and write a comment about my thumbnail or how I’m a fake gamer let me say that I think the Reason a lot of people might not like Diablo can be addressed with this game more on that as we go on it’s weird for me to say too because taking one look at Diablo I know this is the type of game that’s right up my alley the genre is Something I clearly have experience with the aesthetic is completely badass and you can play through the entire game with friends it just seems something that I would enjoy for one reason or another I just haven’t given this series a fair shot the Diablo franchise would Go on to spawn its own sub genre within the RPG space appropriately named Diablo likes original this is where you start to get a bit more contemporary games such as Path of Exile torch light Grim Dawn lost Arc all of which are games I basically have no experience with so hey What better way to jump into this genre than with the kid-friendly Minecraft dungeons and that might sound like a joke initially but as I’ll talk about in a minute I think this is a pretty solid jumping on point for some newcomers but before we get into that we really have To get into this game’s development and figure out how we got to this point the late 2010s was an absolutely massive time for Minecraft obviously the main game was still one of the most played games in the world at that point Microsoft had just acquired Mojang a few Years ago and most importantly new games are being developed this is where Minecraft dungeons comes into play believe it or not the first inspiration for this game wasn’t actually Diablo but instead The Legend of Zelda apparently this game was originally planned to be a single player Dungeon Crawler Exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS and you know this game still does have a lot of that classic Zelda DNA especially when it comes to swinging a sword or shooting a bow during the development there were three decisions that ultimately ended up shaping the game into what it is today The addition of multiplayer the intention of making the game a multiplatform title and the influence taken from games such as Diablo torch light and even a bit of Left 4 Dead I couldn’t find many hiccups with the development process on this one but I did find a number of additional Interviews talking about some other decisions that led to the final product that we see today such as admitting the building aspect of standard Minecraft having a variable difficulty as well as the exclusion of a class-based system in order to streamline the game for new players the game was officially revealed In the 2018 Minecon live stream and gameplay showing off in 2019 D3 Minecraft dungeons was released in May of 2020 for the xbo series consoles PC switch and PS4 and also an arcade versions for dve and Busters restaurants if that’s your thing the game didn’t create the biggest splash in the world Given the events going on at the time but that didn’t stop fans from really enjoying this one Minecraft dungeons received respectable scores in the 7s across all platform platforms Outlet cogg connected gave the game a solid 75 and said Minecraft dungeons isn’t the finest arpg I’ve ever picked up but it’s a terrific First step in your journey Minecraft fans and action RPG junkies alike would do well to give this one a look while game’s radar plus was a little bit more critical giving the game a 70 in said Mojang smartly streamlined Dungeon Crawler makes for more accessible alternative in the action RPG space Sales numbers were a bit tricky to find with this one but I did see that as of February 2022 the game had achieved over 15 million unique players which you have to imagine that being on the Xbox game pass played a large part in giving this Game a boost the game received a couple of nominations for family game of the year but it came out of the same year as Animal Crossing New Horizons which H come on that game was partially responsible for keeping a ton of people Saye during the early parts of the Pandemic there was no way it was going to beat it the game would go on to receive a good amount of content postrelease with a number of new areas enemies and mechanics added to flush out the game even further I’m not really going to be spending too much time Looking at what the game was like at launch since I wasn’t really there for it instead just talk about how the package is now so how is Minecraft dungeons now that all development has wrapped up well I think it’s a pretty damn fine Diablo AK RPG for people who Are either new to the genre or were overwhelmed by what other games had to offer I’m not going to lie to you guys this game isn’t the most mechanically complex game you’re going to find in fact to people who are familiar with the RPGs this might be laughably basic and a Bit boring however as someone who has never stepped foot into a Diablo like game before I think there is enough here to sink your teeth into to enjoy though I have to say I do wish the game would become a little bit more complex as it goes on all the mechanics get introduced Very quickly and the scope of what you can actually do with them is basically understood within the first few hours of the game Minecraft dungeons is a good game that really could have been something great if it just expanded upon a couple of things a little bit further We have a lot to discuss today so without further Ado this is my review of Minecraft Dungeons you guys always know I love starting with the presentation first and I’m happy to say with this one that Minecraft dungeons is mostly a fantastic experience let’s start with the visuals they are awesome this is the way that I want Minecraft to look yes I know this is essentially standard Minecraft blocks With some shaders but [ __ ] man that’s all it needs to be these environments are gorgeous to look at the particle effects on the abilities flying off aren’t distracting and the animations unlike story mode are incredibly faithful to their Source material the opening and closing CGI cut scenes are Much much better representation of the Minecraft Universe in story mode ever was not only do they obviously look nicer but the way they’re animated with their slapstick humor I think it fits better with what Minecraft’s really trying to have going on performance for the most part was solid I’m playing on a Bit of a higher end machine so playing with maxed out graphical settings on 144 Herz was very obtainable for me but even some of the people I play with with more mid-range machines weren’t experiencing many issues with their performance I did find a couple of areas where there were Some frame drops into the the 70s and ‘ 880s particularly in higher difficulties where the screen was swarming with Mobs but this was a very rare occurrence there was also a few times that the game crashed unexpectedly I experienced a couple of crashes within the levels themselves while some of my friends Experienced a crash while either sitting at camp or leaving the tower for whatever reason not really sure what prompted either but the game seems to work well 99% of the time there are also a couple of accessibility options that had me scratching my head like having menu narration on by default I’ve never Really seen a game do that before and it’s obviously an easy fix but just kind of weird audio also great the sound effects from collecting the loot were often times more pleasing in the loot itself and the music again not the level of Minecraft soost but still pretty damn Good in its own right though I would be lying if I told you that my opinion wasn’t partially swayed because of the fact that a couple of these songs were actually remixed in Smash ultimate and there are phenomenal pieces there so yeah presentation obviously pretty damn good minor performance issues aside the Next thing I really want to cover though is about this game’s story or its lack thereof I guess I should say so you have an iller who looks like Squam fancy son who essentially was made fun of for being short or some [ __ ] and he goes full Napoleon taking over the land and Becoming the king go kick his ass it’s all taken care of in about 5 to 6 hours and that’s your story yeah 5 to 6 hours that’s it now this is something that the game received a decent amount of criticism for and I can’t say I really Blame it like it’s certainly doable to start Minecraft dungeons and finish it within one to two sittings if you ignore any of the side content thankfully the game was only ever $20 for the standard edition and Hell a lot of people experienced it on Game Pass so they Didn’t even have to pay that much but still 5 to 6 hours for the main story that’s way too short I get that one of the big appeals behind Diablo likes is the post game and rest assured that still exists here too but even games like Diablo still give a story that Takes players more time to play through than a typical shift at their 9 to5 even calling this a story might might be giving this game a bit too much credit your narrative really takes place in the beginning and final cut scenes and that is essentially it so what exactly Happens in between you might be wondering well on the map screen there are a number of different zones that you can play through each Zone has a small cinematic in the beginning with a narration talking about the Archer’s impact on each of these zones and you basically solve the issue when you run Through the mission that’s it there are no side quest no characters to really converse with it’s just completing whatever objective you came to do and then unlocking the next Zone to do it again yet there is some DLC that adds a second Arc to the whole thing with this Orb that was influencing The Arc iller corrupting other areas of the Minecraft world such as the mountains the ocean and the end but again there really isn’t a ton there now this might sound like a big deal to some people but honestly I don’t think it is sure it would have Been cool to have some more events go on in the middle of the game but let’s be real here no one is playing a Minecraft game for the story listen I really don’t give a [ __ ] anyways onto the gameplay the real thing I think Minecraft dungeons has going for it so the game Obviously takes a lot of cues from isometric AR RPGs like Diablo and torch light you are in a hack and/ style of combat where you fight a large number of enemies using melee and range attacks in order to clear dungeons to gain loot that can further augment your character The combat is one of the primary focuses of game playay and for the most part it is very solid in addition to the earlier mentioned attack options you will also have a potion to periodically heal yourself and a Dodge roll to help you evade attacks or at least it should this Dodge roll feels like it was ripped from Dark Souls 2 for how small the eye frames actually are if there are any at all which is a bit unfortunate given the sheer amount of enemies you will fight at any given time making this a less reliable option than you’d really like And yes I know there are armor sets that give you more eye frames while rolling however that feels like something that should already be baked into the Dodge roll rather than being something you have to get you’ll more than often be finding a large number of mobs that You’ll recognize if you played Minecraft before zombies and villagers from melee damage skeletons and witches to attack from range creepers to instant kill you and Phantoms which are somehow even more annoying than the standard game there are also a number of bosses to encounter such as the Enderman ocean Guardians and Gas to provide some extra challenges though some of the highlights have to be from some of the original mobs they actually added in this game such as the plant monsters or the variants of the Enderman certainly wish we could see these turn up in standard Minecraft Right [ __ ] the mob vote I also wish there were some more unique enemy types since you fight the same groups of mobs throughout the entire game but given the source material they didn’t have a crazy amount of stuff missing from Minecraft one of the other biggest aspects that Fans of Minecraft will recognize are the biomes that make up the game’s missions so how do I explain how these work well on the world map there are a number of different biomes that are essentially more Fantastical versions of their Minecraft counterparts I think these all look phenomenal you have creeper Woods Iterating on the standard wood areas KAC do Canyon for the deserts and my personal favorite the fall Hills of pumpkin pastures If Only They were allowed to play Pumpkin Hill from Sonic Adventure too you know me the fighting freak Knuckles and we’re at Pumpkin Hill you ready The DLC even has you visit some more Uncommon locations such as the mountains oceans Nether and the end when it comes to how they’re designed that makes it a little bit more tricky now you’ll notice it looks like there’s a ton of different acts in each of these levels when you Select it but that’s unfortunately not the case instead that slider acts almost like a difficulty selection that auto recommends whatever your party’s power level is more on that as we go on this means that every level is basically procedurally generated around a few set pieces that will always remain the same The procedural generation is loaded in chunks around these points of interest which if I’m being honest I don’t think works super great I’ve played every level several times and the procedural generation really doesn’t do much to make anything feel vastly different between runs in fact early on in my Playthrough I actually wasn’t even sure if there was any at all given that the levels felt so similar this also leads to some weird quirks in the generation like some chunks have some Pathways that take you off the main path and you might think that you might be getting some Extra loot in that area and sometimes they do but many times they do not often feeling like a complete waste of time and that you need to backtrack from there was a point I just stopped going down these alternative paths because I was satisfied with my build at the time And I knew if there was anything down those optional paths it probably wouldn’t even be worth my time honestly getting around the levels can be a bit annoying too your default movement speed is just a little too slow and spam rolling doesn’t really make you go any faster plus with the combinations of Minecraft Blocky designs and the isometric perspective you could occasionally find yourself getting stuck on random objects or pathing to strange places sometimes you’ll be trying to move and for some unclear reason your character won’t respond to it at all it’s hard to explain but sometimes you’ll just get stuck moving up blocks You should really be able to move to I don’t know man it’s just kind of weird there are also puzzles if you can call them that most of the puzzles in this game aren’t the greatest they’re either given completely random solutions that you have to use trial and error to figure out Or I knew it it’s not all doom and gloom though in a few levels they actually are some hidden areas that open up whole new levels which is nice to see it’s a bit of a shame that the level seed has to include these secrets in them occasionally call for multiple Runthrough of those levels to unlock them but I digress the DLC even adds some alternative Pathways to encounter a secret boss to get Eyes of Ender to open up more new levels and even the post game has you collecting runes and Secret locations to open up a new Mushroom Island mission where you fight nothing but cows ha I didn’t need to play Diablo to get that reference very nice speaking of Diablo un like that game there isn’t a class system in this one instead your play style is determined by what gear you have equipped now to some that might Be a bit of a bummer because that is essentially less to work with but personally I kind of like this system for this game because of how low commitment building your character can actually be you are able to use your standard melee weapons a ranged option With your bow and can wear armor for protection there are a ton of different pieces of gear to slot into any of these areas let’s take the weapons for example you have things you might expect from Minecraft like sword swords and pickaxes but you also have things like a Rapier For fast slashes a scythe for more range attacks or even a chainsaw sword like it’s something out of Warhammer 40K or some [ __ ] each of these have their own way of attacking some more rare variants have additional perks built in and they even have enchantment slots that you can Use to further augment your gear with special abilities a lot of these enchantments will look familiar to anyone who has played Minecraft before smiting for extra damage to Undead fire as to do fire damage you know the things that You’ probably expect there also exists a ton of new enchantments that Can give you you even more fun boosts like creating a poison Cloud siphoning Health from mobs or just making a ton of [ __ ] explode the artifacts are the other component of character building these essentially act like spells or abilities that you can use on cool down you have Things like an AOE stun an aura of healing being able to summon minions to assist you there are a ton of options here in addition to that some artifacts take another resource called souls in order to use which you can collect by killing enemies this is probably for the Best given that some such as a light Rod can basically nullify bosses or some such as this beam can basically turn encounters into a one-sided Dragon Ball Z fight as you play through each different Mission you unlock a number of other things that will be useful of you these include different shopkeepers that Can sell you more items with the game’s currency a blacksmith that you can place a weapon into to upgrade to a higher item level someone to roll your enchantment slots and even a gift her to give items to other players one thing I thought the camp was missing though was A way to exchange your currencies for one another Because by the end of the game gold was far more scarce than the thousands of emeralds I had those are the main components of character building though and in an initial glance yeah they’re quite limited if you were To make a chart and put Diablo in the middle when it comes to complexity and Path of Exile over on the side of more complex you would find Minecraft dungeons in the complete opposite direction in fact in the main story you can pretty much forgo putting any Thought into your build in favor of taking whatever is the highest item level the game gives you I’d recommend doing that initially to get through the main game try out some different weapons that you might not normally use and to unlock the next highest difficulty since that’s where I believe the game really Starts to come online now once once you reach the second difficulty you are given plenty of new items and enchantments to work with and you’ll need them because mobs pack way more of a punch and they’re far more plentiful this is where you actually have to start Thinking about your build a little bit which while your choices are few you can synergize them to make something very powerful let me give you an example nearing the end of my playthrough I had a bow that would automatically shoot three arrows whenever I dodge rolled putting enemies in a bubble while also Creating electric barriers and poison gas clouds I coupled that with this armor that gave me three additional rolls so I was proing this all the time on the same armor I had an ability where my artifacts would activate if I went down to critical Health this would activate my two artifacts that would Both put a shield around me and heal me speaking of mitigating damage my armor also slowed mob’s movement and attack speeds whenever they were near me and gave me a boost to collecting Souls not only could I use my souls for my Dragon Ball Z meme beam but I was also healing With them because the gauntlets that I found had an enchantment that did just that while also stacking a high damaging attack after multiple strikes bringing all foes into melee range basically my play style Revol involved into rolling into a mob of enemies nuking everything and then getting into melee with some of The stronger survivors since my melee damage was so fast and lethal this is just one of the builds that I came up with while playing the game and I was playing with a group that continuously kept finding increasingly better gear and adapting their play Styles as such And that’s one thing I really like about the progression in this game since you aren’t locked into a weapon or a class or really anything at all you’re able to make whatever build your heart desires as long as you have the components to do so maybe you try to make a full-on tank Or something that has a of movement and attack speed maybe it’s someone that focuses on Range attacks or maybe a Caster like character that builds around your artifacts or someone that has a ton of Minions that do your work even a Healer there really are a ton of options At your disposal even if at first they seem very limited to some people looking at the character stat sheet for Diablo is about as exciting as filing their taxes or looking at the skill tree and Path of Exile is the equip of finding your heritage on ancestry.com or some [ __ ] Minecraft dungeons is simple to the point but there’s enough here to really get something out of just that simple difficulty increase took the game into something that I thought was fine something that was passable into something I thought was actually pretty damn good unfortunately though the third Difficulty the highest one which is apocalyptic doesn’t really add a whole lot of new stuff to the table just some more mobs some slightly better gear and the challenge remains about the same so you might be wondering if there’s any incentive to really go beyond the medium Difficulty at all and that’s kind of tough to say by the time you finish default difficulty you will have played through all the levels of the base game and maybe have found a couple of the secret levels too picking up the rest of the secret levels and doing the DLC is Where I think you should jump in with Adventure difficulty since you’ll be experiencing new content while furthering your character build at the same time just note you can always do the DLC on default difficulty if you want but I really recommend waiting until Adventure so you get that extra Challenge when it comes to what you will really experience with the apocalyptic difficulty though you will probably experience most what the game has to offer at that point which the only thing will be finishing up whatever levels you need to and then furthering your build even more by the end there really isn’t Anything the game beyond the final difficulty to test you as a player which may be a bit disappointing this is why I’d really only recommend pushing through the apocalyptic difficulty if you are the number go up type of person since you’ll be the one that gets the Most out of it everyone else I’d say it’s up to you but you won’t be missing much outside of a grind to completion there are a couple of other side modes worth talking about too now you have daily challenges that are essentially random levels that have some modifiers like giving enemies certain enchantments Or giving the player an extra perk of some sort there are also ancient hunts which by sacrificing gear you don’t want you create a random dungeon that you can use to farm gold gilded items and fight exclusive boss variants I think this mode is pretty good but just wish the Currency payouts were a little bit higher lastly and my personal favorite you have the tower mode which acts like a Rog light this mode is really good if it was fleshed out a little bit more I’d honestly say it would be better than the main game really pretty standard Rog Like stuff every floor is a different challenge you get a reward of your choosing between rooms and you have some bosses to encounter along the way it’s good and the rewards you get from clearing it are honestly pretty busted seriously just do this as often as you Want if you want an almost guaranteed way to get the best item the game could possibly give you at the time the only problem that I have with this mode is that there’s only one Tower layout per week apparently they aren’t even randomly generated anymore and just Cycle through previous ones which is a bit of a bummer as much as I would like to run this mode over and over again to continually get the best gear it just gets progressively more and more boring as the layouts don’t change every single Time I play it and I have to wait a week if I want something new of course playing through this game with a group of friends is also another highlight as you all have something you’re actively working on you can help each other by trading items or maybe just [ __ ] around In the camp doing stupid emotes you got from the battle pass Yes you heard me right this game has a battle pass modern gaming guys here it is H this battle pass is mostly inoffensive it’s cheap if you want to get any of the three that they had I Personally didn’t bother this isn’t exactly the type of game that I care too much for the cosmetics in especially when I’m usually wearing armor that covers all that but hey to each their own if I can really describe my time playing Minecraft dungeons it would be with this bellgraph meme my first hour Or so I was having a great time and was excited to see what else the game had as I collected new items I was eager to try them out I saw a very colorful and diverse world map and I wanted to see every single level the game had to offer I was unlocking new things at the camp my friends and I were having a great time then after I played for a while my opinion started to change I thought the game was incredibly shallow boring and I just kept thinking to myself I could be playing something way better I was just Trading out items with better ones as soon as I got them and I never had a consistent build I was steamrolling everything with no Challenge and while the environments I was going through looked nice they all felt pretty much the same I hated the level generation because it kept wasting my time going Down corridors that had nothing and then after the main story when I raised the difficulty oh boys we are so back I started appreciating what the game was and I was having a great time again I found the value increasing my item level so I can use the gear that I still Really liked while also trying out some new possibilities I like doing a lot of the optional stuff so I could earn better gear for my build or get currencies to reroll enchantments I was also challenged by some of the higher-end content let me tell you doing my first apocalyptic run on the mushroom Room with all these [ __ ] cows while being severely underleveled that was hilarious and something I won’t soon forget Minecraft dungeons is a good game it’s one that I honestly put more time into than I thought I would have and while I do think it comes up short of Being something that’s truly special I think I could still give this game a solid recommendation yeah it’s a bit shallow it’s got a few minor problems but it’s still a solid junk food game that you can turn your brain off and hang out with some friends while you Play or maybe put a little bit more thought into it and make something a little goofy that can make you feel like a God give it a try if you like the game is like $20 on steam or or hell if you have Game Pass that’s probably the best Way to experience given that you have nothing to lose so concludes the first marathon for this
