Starting October 27 new Minecoins bought on Switch or Switch 2 stay locked to Nintendo devices and coins from other platforms can no longer be spent there. Existing balances move to a legacy wallet that still works everywhere.

Mojang just announced that the freewheeling days of spending the same Minecoins on any device are ending for Nintendo users. From October 27 2026 when the native Switch 2 version drops Minecoins bought directly on a Nintendo device will only work on Nintendo hardware. The same restriction applies in reverse: coins bought on PC mobile or PlayStation cannot be used on Nintendo versions after that date.
Your current Minecoins survive the change
The official post is clear that nothing happens to what you already own. Pre-October 27 Minecoins shift into a Legacy Wallet. That wallet stays fully cross-platform with no expiration date. New purchases will land in platform-specific wallets and the legacy balance gets used up before those.
Retail cards and gift cards get complicated
Newer physical Minecoin cards may drop Nintendo support entirely. The advice is simple: read the fine print on packaging before you buy or redeem. Cards that list specific platforms will only work where indicated going forward.
- Nintendo-purchased Minecoins after Oct 27 locked to Switch and Switch 2
- Non-Nintendo Minecoins cannot be spent on Nintendo devices post-cutoff
- All existing Minecoins move to cross-platform Legacy Wallet with no expiration
- Legacy balance is spent before any new platform-specific coins
- Check retail card packaging for supported platforms
The change lines up with the previously announced Minecraft native release for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27. If you regularly buy Marketplace maps skins or texture packs on multiple devices now is the time to audit your wallet.
