Can i just point out that they built the canals with the water in them you know watching a video game in some ways it’s kind of pointless to have architects look at it a world without gravity in a world with a different kind of physics wow beautiful i’m amazed at the Atmospherics they’re getting minecraft you’ve come a long way baby [Applause] my name is alexis redinger i founded the architecture and hospitality design firm preen inc my name is benjamin ball i found a multi-disciplinary design practice and fabrication practice ball noga’s studio all right let’s check out minecraft when they say floating they mean Floating in the air not floating on the ocean yeah i’m trying to think why this is helpful but i guess it’s pretty good for avoiding attack unless the attack is f-35 fighter jets right exactly hopefully we’re in a medieval period yeah kind of looks like a like how i imagine An ant hill would look underground yeah definitely doesn’t this one look like they built power and now they’re building this massive sort of modern amphitheater next to it i don’t think this guy’s going for modern i think he’s going for a medieval castle floating in the sky with one mega turret We can talk about this technically this is definitely where magic can’t think of a kind of architecture that’s more bound by the earth and by gravity than a medieval castle because you’re just stacking stones up on top of each other definitely not the kind of architecture technically could fly but you know this Isn’t the earth this isn’t the real world but it clearly is the real world because it was day and then it became night there you go oh look at the lights that’s pretty cool and now we have some magic water yep now we’re gonna get into the details it Seems like they should have made it bigger because the scale of the blocks makes it kind of a chunky world wow but they were they worked out the interior oh yeah that’s pretty cool they’re a good lighting designer yeah that’s amazing wow are these models going on to they’re just in a minecraft World are they going into metaverse what’s happening with these so could i play this could i go into this inhabit this environment as a player but you can’t move things around can you i’m curious if you’re in minecraft how you can find it it’s just floating out there yeah and disneyland castle definitely To me that type of castle is always says bavarian to me the kind of american idea of the storybook castle seems to be bavarian yeah or there’s some that are french that feel like that too yeah maybe french that’s a great distinction very much an american thought of a castle or it seems Like who knows who did it i just think it’s wild because it’s floating in space in the air like a lot of visionary speculative architects were imagining the world in the 1960s and 70s i also just think it’s fun to see it built with the the same unit more or Less like this 8-bit block gives everything a sort of this a similar quality about it interested to see if minecraft will ever change that or if that’s just part and parcel or signature of minecraft is that it’s always built with blocks that’s the signature i was noticing the waterfalls kind of look Like vhs tape so are those blocks or not that’s a great question yeah it seems like they make an exception for the water and the clouds So this is like collective team yeah i think i can see that aesthetically very additive a little more chaotic i think i saw a minute ago like gabby in cages but yep like there there they are there you go that’s gabby and cages yeah yeah so i find it interesting that they Choose to work with sort of ancient porphyry right like the stone work it’s pretty historic right it’s like a texture map on the 8-bit too because it doesn’t occur as symmetrical yeah it seems like people do a lot of kind of building from the outside and then work Inward maybe and then interiors wow yeah is somebody leading this process or is it entirely a kind of chaotic organic process so i forgot this as game of thrones right i don’t know that does it look like game of thrones to you ben not yet then again i’m not a game of thrones Connoisseur i did watch a season or two i read it and then i watched it and then we were in dubrovnik last fall which is i think what westeros is based on or shot was shot in this is a little better than the last because there’s more of a Contrast between the color of the rock and the color of the foliage like in the last one everything was more or less the same gray tone the ground scape the terrain and the buildings it’s kind of hard to read them i wonder if that given to you as a Palette in minecraft or are players able to input textures and tiles into the system and i’m curious is there an architect and then an interior designer like people who have specialized roles they’re butting heads yeah i’ve been seeing these windows consistent through the whole things with The little sort of keyhole on the top like there’s a keystone missing do you know an architectural precedent for that because i don’t i don’t it’s like kind of a minecraft thing well i guess it’s probably determined to some degree by the coarseness of the tool that you have At your disposal in minecraft and you’re working with you’re basically building with legos so give it some kind of flourish maybe they’re trying to do sort of a knave type window in some ways working with blocks and minecraft and building in stone is equivalent because the physical capability of the stone is somewhat Similar to the 8-bit system wow everything looks like it was dug from like a marble quarry when i see these worlds the rock looks as though it’s been they’ve had big blocks of it removed right it looks like a marble quarry so i think this is the entire Country right westeros like trying to remember it’s not just the town it’s the entire country so that’s a massive build yeah another thing that it reminds me a lot of is metabolist architecture these guys are going for a medieval kind of fantasy world but because they’re built With blocks it reminds me of habitat 67 by moshe softy or the capsule tower in tokyo by kisho kurakawa that was just that they just took down yeah it’s a funny way of mixing those kind of 60s futuristic visions with medieval bavarian architecture i’m amazed at the atmospherics they’re Getting minecraft you’ve come a long way baby yeah i remember when i first saw minecraft it was like a 2d world what is architecture if everything is a block even the grass is a block the lighting is a lot richer than i originally than i remember it colors are less cartoonish It’s really getting good it’s so much more cinematic right yeah it’s incredible the trees are constructed in a different with a different tool no because they seem to be less blocky they’re not legos that’s a pretty common problem for architects building models how do you represent trees if you’re Building computer models there’s always a collection of trees that you can pull from but sometimes if you want something really interesting you have to build it yourself you know the lighting effects are not unlike what we use in twin motion or lumion lumion i was just thinking we do the same tricks yeah Historically it’s been was difficult to make a beautiful sunset rendering and now it’s sort of trivial pretty easy basically just select sunset so cool Wow beautiful alexis the next generation of architects this is where they’re going to cut their teeth a lot of them it’s in video games i suspect that the world will start looking more like minecraft the people that are immersed in this as kids then they go off to architecture School those sensibilities make their way into the work i’d be interested to see the percentage of people that actually move through to architecture school with this background because i think the people that are i could be wrong but i suspect a lot of people that are building these worlds don’t have Architectural training that that’s not their bread and butter right i just think like the whole general concept of like world building there’s so many ways to do it now the fields are all overlapping game design production design for movies theme park design pop-up architecture so it’s bound to have a huge influence Question as the sort of role in modern society in america the role of the architect has diminished and what is this the statistics it’s only three percent of buildings are designed by architects where i was just in copenhagen and it’s like i didn’t see a building that wasn’t architecturally Articulated it’s such a different culture does this sort of tooling and this sort of like you know if kids are in minecraft camp does that then alter back swing the pendulum back so that architecture becomes something that’s more important again because a lot of bad design in the us Are they working off of photographs stills from the show because the show is a kind of hybrid of animation and real locations i wonder if these designers are working with topographical information from croatia and then plopping their castles on it or they’re making it up that’s an awesome observation because It’s a book right so the architecture is what you imagine and then it was a show which is you know dubrovnik and i don’t know where else they shot but what are they taking this from i don’t understand this are they applying some sort of reducing kind of like a swarm Technique but like a differentiator to the larger blocks algorithm right that’s what it looks like to me they’re using a kind of brush to break down the scale of the blocks it looks like to finer point than you ever would have had before in minecraft which is interesting yeah What’s wild is that the tools are not really that different than some of the tools that architects are using these days This really is funny this looks like christ the redeemer christ the redeemer rio rio but it’s also like an anthony gormley sculpture where he did these kind of pixelated people blocks of human form there had to have been an architect on the statue of liberty right because it’s actually an Allomorph statue that you’re inhabiting ben what do you know about japanese architecture that’s a big question when i was in my school days i did a traveling studio in japan spent a month in kyoto in a zen temple a month in tokyo living in a kind of pod hotel i Don’t know really the canon of japanese architecture but i absorbed a lot about it via osmosis back then interesting cool i read somewhere that there was the status to the size of the roof in japanese architecture and the bigger it was and the bigger the overhangs was prestigious they’re Building these temples like you would build with legos by a kind of additive block process which is couldn’t be more different than the way that japanese carpenter would have built a temple roof would have all been built of shaped timbers right with very fine joinery and slotted together and a frame and Then a cladding right they might have built the base out of out of stone right and then the roof and can i just point out that they built the canals with the water in them i mean you know watching a video game it’s sort of in some ways it’s kind of Pointless to have architects look at it because you know they’re building on a world without gravity in a world with a different kind of physics you can build the canal after the river is already there so it’s a totally different set of rules i mean it’s impressive what Everyone’s able to do it’s really amazing you know what’s interesting is some of the images that are starting to show up on the web i don’t know that i’ve seen any ai generated but i’m seeing ones that are just environments people are crafting it’s like a whole different form of real this surrealism The complexity people are able to achieve now and authenticity and rendering is just awesome and it’s interesting that minecraft’s getting closer but it’s still just 8-bit yeah it still has that blocky kind of look feels like organic relationship between the parts that you might see in a traditional Medieval city of course it looks like it’s made out of legos in terms of the way that it’s planned or that it’s laid out the way it kind of responds to the river to the canals and to the landscape seems accurate i don’t it’s beautifully sighted it’s sort of Fantasy sided you know with these waterfalls cascading down i don’t know that you would build such a large sculpture right in the middle of a town because your experience of it as a human would be a very large toe or something of that nature so usually when you see these really big statues They’re either on a hill they’re somewhere far away that you go to that you can see that’s a really good point but they do have a bay or a harbor in this design maybe the builder first thought oh i’ll make something that this statue that you Can see from the harbor but then the city sort of built up around it they just didn’t have good zoning code that’s right it’s very interesting to see how a huge group of people collectively can create something of such fidelity and detail and richness that references something that’s already known production designer Of game of thrones created this world and now these guys are recreating it they’re doing it in with remarkable detail and and fidelity and ambition i’d like to see a minecraft world in contrast to this that is completely trying to imagine a new future based on the kinds of problems that architects And urban planners face in in our world today i see a huge shift in growth in what people are accomplishing in the minecraft space it’s remarkably beautiful some of the the video techniques have emerged in that world than being applied back in this virtual world and the sort of experiential Nature of it all has increased and it’s um pretty impressive i want to echo that it is interesting that there’s this recreation of sort of fantasy history space and so people working with traditional building techniques to some degree you know like japanese temple architecture and castle and i’d like to Know the minecraft world where it’s like the progressive futuristic world developing different relatedness and rules and architecture for more experts react subscribe to Minecraft is a 3D sandbox game that has no required goals to accomplish, allowing players a large amount of freedom in choosing how to play the game. However, there is an achievement system, known as “advancements” in the Java Edition of the game, and “trophies” on the PlayStation ports. Gameplay is in the first-person perspective by default, but players have the option for third-person perspective. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects—mainly cubes and fluids, and commonly called “blocks”—representing various materials, such as dirt, stone, ores, tree trunks, water, and lava. The core gameplay revolves around picking up and placing these objects. These blocks are arranged in a 3D grid, while players can move freely around the world. Players can “mine” blocks and then place them elsewhere, enabling them to build things. Many commentators have described the game’s physics system as unrealistic. The game also contains a material known as redstone, which can be used to make primitive mechanical devices, electrical circuits, and logic gates, allowing for the construction of many complex systems. ——————– Thanks to these amazing players for the gameplay: – WesterosCraft: https://www.youtube.com/c/WesterosCraft – Shannooty: https://www.youtube.com/c/Shannooty – LiTo: https://www.youtube.com/user/LiToMinecraft ——————– Up In My Jam (All Of A Sudden) by – Kubbi https://soundcloud.com/kubbi Creative Commons – Attribution 3.0 Unported- CC bY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: http://bit.ly/2JnDfCE Music Promoted by Audio Library https: / /youtu.be/tDexBj46oNI ——————– Stay in the loop with us on social media!
