Hello everyone my name is pick Soros and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide I hope you guys are having a good day today we’re out here in the swamp because I want to start a new project out here there are a bunch of things going on in founders Forge but this area Over here is what I was going to call Old Town and it’s going to be a kind of extension of the town into this area that is slowly over time become a swamp we’re gonna have lots of kind of rundown houses and wooden shacks and stuff like That but we’re not gonna start the Old Town project today instead we’re going to focus on something very specific and it’s tied into the idea I had for having five different blacksmiths in this area one for the plains one for the mountains one for the forests one in a castle That’s gonna be at the end of the founders fault ravine and one right here in the swamp and each of these we’re going to have different fuel sources the one in the swamp is going to use kelp as a fuel source or more specifically kelp blocks because when kelp is smelted it Turns into dried kelp nine of those in a crafting table will make you one kelp block and one kelp a block can smelt twenty items so kelp is actually a fuel source and if used correctly it can kind of be a self renewing fuel source you Can use the kelp blocks to cook 20 more kelp which you can use the dried kelp from to make – kelp blocks and so on and so forth it kind of multiplies as it goes so farming kelp and 1.13 can be a really useful thing so I want to set up A kelp farm out here to start off with and that way if I can get onto this lily pad and actually stand still for a second that way our blacksmith will be able to kind of perpetuate itself with fuel and keep the fuel going and we can Have a decent renewable fuel source so I need to figure out a place exactly where we’re going to build this kelp farm but I think we might I’ve still got my frost polka boots on from yesterday oops she’ll probably swap those out for the depth Strider ones shouldn’t I But I think what we’re going to do is actually build it out here in the swamp because of course kelp requires water in order to grow it and to farm it so we’re going to have to build some redstone stuff around water so it’s gonna be a Little bit tricky but I think I’ve got a decent design figured out for this I’ve seen this design a couple of different places so I can’t exactly credit somebody with originating the design but folks like Cub fan and Mambo on the hermit craft server you might have seen them building a similar kelp Farm to this one there are a couple of different kelp farm designs out there some of which are really really quite high production I’m not going for anything quite as intense as that there are some that you can use sweeping flying machines like the ones we’ve used In the blaze farm to harvest a huge amount of kelp but once that’s not really what I’m going for here what I’m going for is closer to the design of the sugar cane farm that we’ve already built a long time ago over there in the industrial area where I’m planning on Just having kind of tiers of kelp that get broken by pistons detected by observers that kind of thing it should be a relatively straightforward build especially now we’ve gained a little bit of experience with redstone but first I need to find my boots and we need to Sleep good morning I’m just gathering up the parts I will need for this and it’s gonna require a lot of Pistons and a lot of observers again so I need to make sure we have enough of those which currently we do not do we have two Pistons to our name there might be some more in the Redstone chest in the house but aside from that I think we all probably need to make a fair few more so let me grab some of these let me grab some redstone dust need to get a few Planks broken down let’s see what I have the most woods I think probably jungle will have to do for the moment I’ve got a couple of jungle logs here that I plan to use in and around the build as well but we need to convert some of these Into pistons before the moment let me grab a special key box just so we can have a project shulker box for this they’ve got a lot of kelp in that one already so that seems like we could probably stash some of that in there and let’s use this spare regular shelcha box To house some of the building materials there we go good okay so now I can empty my inventory out to make some Pistons two stacks of pistons should be enough we’ll need the same number of observers probably and yeah we only have four right now so that’s gonna be a problem Too but we all probably bring some redstone dust with us also luckily I have a lot of quartz or that we can fortune to make some observers so we’ve got a box of Celt we’ve got a box of building supplies and redstone stuff this should in theory be everything we Need is more or less what you need for the sugarcane farm give or take the collection mechanism which we will work on a little bit later and the last thing I’m going to need is another couple of buckets of water just so we can make an infinite water source out there I mean We’ve got the swamp but having more than one bucket is use be kind of helpful I also have a ton of water buckets here in this chest that could just be regular buckets so they will stack up so sure we’ll bring all of those so out here in the swamp I Actually want this kelp fan to be quite close to the rest of the town mainly so that the chunks are loaded in and the kelp farm will actually operate while we’re working on the town of founders forged but also because I want it to be nice and accessible for when we go and Collect the kelp and that kind of stuff so I think what we all probably do is build it somewhere out here slightly to the to the right of the shadow over the hot air balloon up there and I still need to fix the basket anyway let’s move On let’s let’s go have ourselves some spruce wood out of here I’m gonna be using spruce logs for the most part this way the reason I’m bringing jungle Logs with me by the way is that they’ve naturally got this kind of green texture to them there’s like green patches here And there and I’m not certain if that’s still the case in the new vanilla textures I’ll have to check that at some point but I always think it looks really great in a jungle setting because it’s naturally got that kind of damp mossy look to it is it’s got this light kind Of green tint that allows it to be a little bit kind of waterlogged looking I guess so we’ll use those also jungle logs have like this round texture in the way that most bark has like a vertical texture jungle logs have a horizontal texture I find it looks really good out Here but we’re gonna start off by making ourselves a little trench down here we’re probably gonna go out about as deep as the swamp we’ll go clear out some of this seed grass and yeah we’re gonna be starting it roughly let’s say here so we’ll start here and we’re gonna Build this out in layers and tiers so it’s going to kind of branch outwards in a v-shape you’ll see what I mean once we built a little bit more of it but I’m gonna make this row of planks here I think 18 blocks long so that we’re going To be using 16 observers and pistons on each side as we go and that will make it a nice even number for the two stacks of pistons that we’ve got with us already so there we go this section here is 18 blocks long and it actually fits quite Neatly between the two dirt banks on either side here so we’re going to leave one gap in the middle this is gonna have to be an odd-numbered build but that should be fine we’re going to fill this row in there and then do the same on the Opposite side then we’re gonna dip into the observer’s and pistons we’re gonna start by placing a row pissed one block in so we have sixteen in a row like so we’ll do the same on the opposite side and then we’re gonna add observers on the top of them facing Inwards so that they will be able to read when the kelp gets to a certain height then to make sure that the observers power these Pistons we’re gonna add a row of blocks back here and then we will have to add redstone on top of the blocks now redstone is not Waterproof and it will break if you try and place it under water or if water flows into it so we are going to have to dry out and waterproof this section here to make sure that no redstone gets touched by water so and we’ll need to Build up around this I might make it out of glass or maybe out of just some more spruce wood but we’ll build up some sort of barrier to make sure that the redstone here can remain dry but I’m sure you get the idea already right you Plant the kelp here it grows up to the height of the observer the observer detects it sends out a redstone signal into a redstone piece here which is going to power the block underneath it powering the piston and breaking off the kelp here this single kelp block down here will Remain and it will continue to grow now the thing about kelp is that it operates on a mechanic called age and if I press f3 you’ll notice on the right hand side underneath targeted block it says minecraft kelp and it says age 3 kelp can grow until it has an age of 24 Once it reaches 24 there will be one more block that can grow on top of it and that is it meaning that if a kelp starts down here with an age of 24 then it will only grow up one block and it won’t be able to grow any further to be Detected by the observers this one here for example started off at age 24 when I planted it and the Sun that start at age 1 age 18 h 3 h 12 they kind of randomized a little bit now one of the great things about this farm design is That all of the Redstone is going to be connected at the back here much like it is in our sugarcane farm firing all the pistons as it goes which means that even if one of these kelp isn’t able to grow any higher than about there it’ll be outgrown by one of the Other plants that’ll trigger an observer all of the Pistons will activate and they’ll all get cut off at this height anyway that actually randomizes the age of the bottom kelp block again so you’ll notice now this kelp lock has an age of 19 and then if we grow it manually it’s Got an age of 5 then if we break it again like so it returns to a different age starting at age 3 meaning it will be able to continue to grow and that’s the advantage of building your farm like this because it shouldn’t ever reach a point where any Of the kelp plants cannot grow and not be detected by the observers or cut off by the Pistons basically it’s going to perpetuate itself forever without us having to come through and like replant any of the kelp the other fun thing is that as long as it’s a solid block Underwater kelp can be grown on pretty much anything meaning we can actually plant the next row of kelp on top of these observers and it will grow just the same as the row below did that was planted on these so we can actually use the observers as the next stage save a Layer of materials and just start growing the kelp up from there we can make sure there’s redstone in here that can get like walled off by glass or spruce logs or something like that and as long as we make sure that the redstone in here is protected from the Water around it we should be perfectly fine there you go it’s growing as we speak all right I’m gonna build this up a few more levels on each side it’s going to extend beyond the surface of the water a little bit but it’s all gonna start down here so we have as Little water sources to place as possible and then we’re gonna fill in the sides here with glass so that you can kind of see into it we’ll probably ultimately build a building around it but for now I just want the farm to be here I want it to be functional and Producing kelp forests so that the blacksmith can have some fuel later there we go and of course it’s raining now just to make me feel right at home but unfortunately the rainwater will not fill up this entire thing even if we leave it for an infinite amount of time No we’re gonna have to do this manually and that is why I’ve brought all the water buckets because we need water sources along basically the entirety of the length of this thing at every level up until where that glass is which means a lot of water placing so let’s get to Doing that I will come back to you guys when that’s done but right now unfortunately it’s not gonna form water sources because the water is all flowing down into this existing pool of water so we’re gonna have to do a lot of very painstaking water placing in order to Get this done as we know from the guardian farm though all we really need to do is place water along two edges we’ll use this short edge over here and then we’ll start to fill in the long edge and the water sources will kind of Follow us in a wave as we go making it ever so slightly easier to do this at first it can seem like an insurmountable task but start with the edges don’t start with the middle and sooner or later you’ll find the whole thing just fills up I also recommend doing this before you Put in any of the redstone that’s gonna trigger the pistons otherwise once you place water sources in front of these observers and they just update constantly you’re going to find that you end up killing a lot of piston triggers and once we get to the top here it’s About time to start thinking about a collection mechanism and there are a bunch of things we could do for this but I think the simplest way is just going to be to run a bunch of hoppers down the center here and have the water flow in from either side because remember once You break the kelp all of the items will float to the surface as long as there’s no downwards flowing water in here which we’ve just ensured there’s not by filling it in with water sources also because the kelp itself will actually grow water sources all the way up to the Surface and when it breaks any flowing water will be converted into regular full water sources so it’s not gonna be too much of a problem to guarantee that all of the items will float to the surface at which point a water string from either side could divert it into The center now as we’ve just seen unfortunately it’s not going to be quite as simple as placing water buckets all the way along the edges because the water will only flow a block or two before it sinks down into the main body of this water so what we want to do is Actually extend the length that this water is going to travel until it reaches the middle like so then when we take out the blocks underneath like that you’ll notice that the water still remains flowing into this central area and that’s where we can line our row of Hoppers so all we need to do is place water sources along here and then place planks that will extend outwards here so that the water source continues through to the middle and that should be fine that should be an easy way of doing it You might want to do this one row at a time instead of filling up this entire second level with water sources because then you’d have to go and fill them back in anyway but right now the falling water on the right hand side there says it’s false meaning that we haven’t Completely eliminated the water sources that were over here in the first place that’s good news so all I have to do is make sure that we get water sources flowing all the way into the center and on this row here right above this row of dirt that I’ve Left at the bottom we’re going to be placing a row of hoppers that’s just gonna output to a chest on the front of the farm and make sure we can collect all the kelp from it when it has grown I’ve got this process down to a fine art Now and now I’m filling in the second site I may as well show you a quick way of doing this because all we need to do is start by placing all the water sources along here they’re only gonna float two blocks but we shouldn’t have to worry too much about that right now Yet it should all look like that then all you need to do is stand on the row of hoppers I’ve placed down the center of this all of these hoppers are facing into each other and facing that way so we can take an output from this whole Kelp farm over there and all we need to do is stand on top of this row of hoppers and place one two three blocks of wood note that the water flows all the way up to where these hoppers are then take those out and the water sources underneath should reform nice And easily all we need to do is do this for every observer along the row so we place three blocks we remove three blocks we placed three blocks we remove three blocks on and on and then eventually all of the water sources will be flowing into the hoppers right here And to do a quick test of this on this side let’s just randomly throw a couple of pieces of kelp out in here pop them over here as well everything should start to float up to the surface and then they’ll get caught in the water streams once it reaches the top and Immediately flows into the hoppers nice and simple that’s all gonna be collected out the hopper right down there on the end because it doesn’t have an output into a chest yet but that guarantees that all of the items produced by this farm will end up in here now the one Thing we need to do to prevent anything from getting stuck underneath these hoppers is to place a probably a full wall of spruce planks down the center here as well health because otherwise some of the pistons are going to be pushing the Celt the kelp will have Momentum that carries it out into the center and then it’s gonna float up it’s gonna get stuck underneath the hoppers and not be collected so while this farm does look pretty nice and open like that I do think we probably want to avoid losing any kelp in this so I’m just Going to throw down a bunch of spruce blocks underneath there to support the hoppers and to make sure that we don’t end up losing any of the kelp we want you can make this even easier on yourself by placing the blocks with the off hand and then just chopping them Back again with the main hand using the ax and by left-clicking a right clicking alternately like that we’ve managed to fill up the entire kelp farm fantastic all I need to do is finish off this wall in the center and we should be good to go So far this thing looks sort of like the hull of a massive ship which is a really great design except for the fact that I’m pretty sure this swamp section is really more of a lake than having any kind of connection to the sea I don’t Think we could build it here and really yeah it doesn’t really look like a ship could get in here especially not one of this size the last thing we have left to do here is to get all of the redstone in next to these observers to trigger the Pistons that are behind this row of planks here and oh gosh it’s gonna be a bit of a task I’m probably gonna have to bring in some sponges to dry out the water down here but we can at least make a start so let’s start framing this Whole thing out in spruce let’s enclose it completely and make sure that we can waterproof the entire thing we can always leave a row of glass blocks behind here to make sure the redstone is dry and that should be easy enough to do there we go all it took was for sponges To dry this space out the sponge placement is real and now we have ourselves a line of redstone in here that even when we take these planks out of the way that will be perfectly safe from any water around here so that’s that’s done pretty well I think that Actually went very very smoothly we need to place in another line of redstone dust along here but then all of this will be right as rain and I need to get out of here moment of truth let’s take away all of the spruce planks around this and let the redstone sit there we Need to do this on the opposite side as well but I think this should all be perfectly fine now and with the redstone all in place the last thing I’m doing is just making sure that we have enough of a storage buffer to collect all of the kelp from this Farm because oh boy we’re probably gonna get a lot of kelp I’m probably gonna leave this thing running not even remember that it’s here for the most part and then I’ll come back to a whole heap of kelp but that should be enough to get us started at least make sure That the hoppers are facing into each of these chests so that all of the stuff filters down into the bottom chests here we’ll probably make this a little bit more elegant in the long run but all we need to do for now is make sure it is functional could probably do it without Being quite so splashy there we go two more hoppers left ones come out of the glass and want to go straight into that chest and then we can add in all the kelp and this farm is gonna be complete and now for the moment you’ve all been Waiting for or maybe you have yes I have I want to see this farm done and operational and for that we need to add the kelp so I’m gonna deep dive in here and place all of the kelp in rows we need to start on that spruce row down Here and then on the observer’s above there and this whole thing should start to operate now obviously it’s not gonna start producing a huge amount of stuff straightaway but let’s just check that it works yes fantastic and all of the kelp should float to the surface and be Caught in those water streams ready to be channeled into the hoppers success I think this has turned out very very well and we really only need a stack of kelp per site because it’s it’s yes four rows of 16 so I didn’t quite need to bring This much kelp with me in the first place good to be able to test each of the rows though just to make sure that we’ve placed the Redstone correctly but I can’t see anything from the outside that leads me to believe this has gone wrong so let’s let’s hope it all works Okay alright we have two stacks of kelp in the system some of it is growing already which is fantastic now let’s see if that grows a little bit further starts floating up that one grows it floats that one grows everything fires and all four of the ones on this side Are okay so I’m pretty sure that we can confirm the entire farm is working and yeah pretty soon we should see some kelp growing up here and there ourselves it’s only gonna come in in ones and twos at a time and you could scale this farm up Basically as as big as you wanted to as long as you have enough Pistons observers hoppers and so forth to make sure this thing runs okay but we should start to see the kelp trickling in slowly over the next few episodes I can reclaim the spruce planks that I picked Up here and yet we already have some floating up into the system ready to be collected fantastic stuff not only do we have a kelp farm now I think we have a pretty good-looking kelp farm as well I like the modular design of this thing I Like the fact that it kind of looks like the hull of a ship and maybe we’ll build some kind of impossible ship around it in future but I think that is where we’re gonna call it for today’s episode
