Gathering the Materials
To make a furnace, you’ll need eight cobblestones. Cobblestones can be obtained by mining stone blocks. If you’re not sure how to mine stone blocks, check out our previous tutorial on mining basics.
Crafting the Furnace
Once you have all the materials, it’s time to craft the furnace. Open your crafting table and place the eight cobblestones in a square shape, leaving the center slot empty. It should look like this:

And there you have it! A furnace. It may seem like a simple block, but it has many uses in the game.
Using the Furnace
Now that you have a furnace, let’s talk about how to use it. The furnace is primarily used for smelting ores and cooking food. To use the furnace, follow these steps:
- Place the furnace on the ground by right-clicking.
- Open the furnace by right-clicking on it.
- Place the item you want to smelt or cook in the top slot of the furnace.
- Place a fuel source in the bottom slot of the furnace. Common fuel sources include coal, charcoal, and wood.
- Wait for the furnace to finish smelting or cooking. You’ll see flames and progress bars indicating the process.
- Once the process is complete, the resulting item will appear in the right slot of the furnace.
- Take the item out of the furnace by left-clicking on it.
And that’s how you use a furnace in Minecraft! It’s a handy tool for turning raw materials into useful items.

Additional Uses for Furnaces
While smelting ores and cooking food are the main uses for furnaces, there are a few other things you can do with them:
- Smelting ores: Furnaces can be used to smelt ores such as iron, gold, and diamond, turning them into ingots or gems.
- Smelting stone: If you have excess cobblestone, you can smelt it in a furnace to turn it into smooth stone, which has a different texture.
- Smelting clay: Clay blocks can be smelted in a furnace to create bricks, which are used for building.
- Smelting sand: Sand can be smelted in a furnace to create glass, which is used for windows and decorative purposes.
So, don’t underestimate the power of the humble furnace. It’s a versatile tool that can help you in many aspects of your Minecraft adventures.
