So if you clicked on this video I’m going to assume that you’re familiar with both Minecraft and the works of Lovecraft but just in case is a very quick summary HP Lovecraft was a writer widely regarded as the father of the cosmic horror genre and is well known For his numerous Works which introduced creatures such as cthulu into the public Consciousness Minecraft on the other hand is a kid-friendly game about placing blocks and exploring a procedurally generated world of infinite possibilities at a glance Minecraft couldn’t be further from the themes of Lovecraft there are after all most Likely no Insanity inducing Gods hidden beneath the blocky terrain and Minecraft generally makes a pretty conscious effort to avoid anything even remotely similar to the Gory nature of many Lovecraft stories with that said however there are distinct parallels which link the two together I don’t personally believe that anyone at mojing intended For Minecraft a mirror Lovecraft but that does not change the fact that Minecraft understands Lovecraft in a way that few games can hope to achieve let’s start at the basics when discussing Lovecraft it can be easy to assume that what made his works great were the monsters and ancient gods and Dark Cults and all that and sure those elements were highly Innovative but what ultimately defined his works in the genre he spawn is a very particular kind of fear Cosmic horror relies on the fear of the unknown a fear which is often heightened by how incredibly small you Are in the face of the unknowable it’s not simply that you don’t know enough about the world around you but rather that you can’t know more and trying to piece it all together will have disastrous consequences lovecrafts protagonists are often men of science or explorers who are confronted with things That simply do not fit into their worldview slight glimpses of a world and history much broader than anything theyve ever imagined taking things back to Minecraft the game has since some of its earliest versions showed glimpses of a forgotten history and vast lore which invites in the Curious mind Without ever giving clear answers across the world of Minecraft there are scattered colossal fossils and great monuments that all hint at a story so much larger than the player the creatures that inhabit the world also Point toward much the same leaving more questions and answers the presence of The undead alone would imply that something terrible happened to whoever was here before you but the hints left behind in structures offer few answers why is it that you’re the last person left why are you alone now going outside of the story and lore of the game the actual experience Of Minecraft does bring to mind lovecraft’s works it’s no secret that Minecraft is an often times very lonely game and even when playing in multiplayer the creations made by people are ultimately dwarfed by the sheer scale of the world 60 million blocks across is the current world size and Even then it’s only limited by an arbitrary border it could go on forever if only our computers could manage and and in this colossal world you and whoever you play with are only minuscule specs no matter what you build no matter the scale or size of it it won’t make a Difference a million blocks in either direction and it will be like you weren’t there at all and in all that unexplored fastness there could be anything there are sights and experiences you’ll never know that no one will ever know perhaps if you were to take it all in you might finally Understand what the game is trying to tell you The Sciences each straining in its own Direction have hither to harmed us little but someday the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality and of our frightful position therein that we shall either go mad from The Revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new Dark Age maybe that’s what happened to the Ancients or maybe they’re still out there in those empty spaces where torch light will never plunge can you really say for certain can you really know that you’re Alone practically speaking you can pick apart the code of the game and find that there aren’t ancient Builders hiding in the Hinterlands the code never lies after all the truth however hasn’t always stood in the way of the fear that Minecraft often evokes and yes of course I’m talking about Herobrine what did you think I wasn’t about to go there much like in the world of Lovecraft where the objective Sciences would dissuade anyone from believing in the eldrich Gods beneath their feet the myth of Herobrine persisted within the Minecraft Community for long after it was disproved I think That the longevity of such falsehood speaks volumes as to the nature of the game and how it interacts with the unknown people were perfectly willing to believe that they were being stalked through their worlds by a malevolent Force without any real evidence as a kid I was convinced that Herobrine was in my World and I had plenty of unexplainable experiences to back it up more than likely I was just scared of my own sh Shadow and those fears have most definitely dled with time still when I play Minecraft alone I get those occasional moments of feeling like I’m being watched and when I run into Something that I surely built but don’t remember I recall those childhood Horrors all the worlds I abandoned because I was convinced I was not alone in them now if I were to have made this video a few years ago I would wrap it up here with some remark about how Lovecraft is meant to invoke the same kinds of Dee rooted fears that something like kobran Taps into how erode at one certainty in the world around them by questioning all that they thought they knew maybe I could talk vaguely about how cave noises are pretty spooky too yeah no that’s not what we’re [Laughter] doing remember what I said about Minecraft not really being a Lovecraft adaptation well intentional or not the entirety of the deep dark definitely would make me wonder otherwise added in the much anticipated 1.19 Wild update the deep dark is a Subterranean Wasteland infested with a strange substance called skull that seems to Feed off the life force of living creatures hidden in this vastness you can uncover the so-called ancient city a bizarre necropolis guarded by the nigh unkillable Warden which is summoned when the player makes too much noise but simply the deep dark in the ancient city are horrifying they represent the most Direct horror additions to the game and their designs and themes are both so in line with Lovecraft that I have trouble believing they weren’t at least partially inspired now before I go on this would be a good time to talk about Frameworks our view of the world is largely Determined by Frameworks or frames of reference which come together to form our perspective no one really looks at anything in a purely objective sense however deliberately changing the framework by which you view a piece of media can unlock whole new interpretations and understanding of the piece rather than directly proposing That my following interpretation is the object objectively correct way to look at Minecraft’s peculiar addition of the deep dark I would implore you to proceed using the framework that Minecraft is designed in reference The Works of Lovecraft while this is almost certainly not at all true in in a you know Wholeheartedly objective sense interpreting Minecraft’s world through Lovecraft does undeniably open new insights taking us back to the ancient city and going under the assumption that this is meant to reference Lovecraft one can immediately see similarities between it and the ancient city discovered in Antarctica in Lovecraft story at the Mountains of Madness in this tale a group of explorers discovers an age-old Metropolis or well I guess necropolis as well uh it’s dead for the most part and it greatly predates mankind this necropolis is solely inhabited by horrific monsters called shogi these shogi were created Long Ago by the So-called Elder things who built the city but unfortunately well maybe fortunately Ely all things is considered uh the shets overthrew their masters and they now wander through the crumbling Halls killing anything that crosses their path now when the characters encounter shogi it it proves far too Strong for them to have any hope of conquering and they are of course forced to flee abandoning the city sound familiar of course I’m not saying that the warden is in fact a shith or anything of the sort but the parallels are undeniably there especially when one considers the presence of sound Dampening wool lined walkways within the ancient city which strongly imply that whoever built the city coexisted with sound sensitive skull for at least a Time the skull itself does also have a certain deep sea pallet which reminds me of another famous part of lovecraft’s Mythos that being the lost city of rle Which is hidden beneath the ocean and where the great old one cthulu Waits dreaming for unknown eons waiting for the time when the other old gods return to take back the world Minecraft’s ancient city does resemble rle to some degree what with its slick dark stone and skull covered Pathways all orbiting The central monolith however I think that Minecraft is a much more Curious parallel to Ray in the form of the ocean Monument or sea Temple as some folks would colloquially refer to it as in Lovecraft story The Call of cthulu the lost city of rle is discovered by Fishermen when it briefly rises from the ocean and the men are either killed by cthulu or driven mad by the sight the geometry of the city is is bizarre and seems to shift strangely and it is clear in all regards that it was not built for human habitation the ocean Monument is similar In the fact that it is a monolithic structure hidden in the depths of the sea and heun from A peculiar type of stone not found anywhere else in the game it seems to hearken back to some lost era though its construction is not like any other structure and the Submerged halls and corridors are labyrinthine and confusing nothing is built to scare with the player almost as though humans were not even an afterthought in the minds of its creators there are of course the Elder Guardians as well which in addition to having suspiciously similar names to the Elder things seem to be capable of invading the player’s Mind through an on-screen effect that grants mining fatigue it’s almost as though they are protecting the monument waiting for some future day when will rise from the depths to be used again taken together one must wonder what this new Interpretation of the ancient city an ocean Monument means for the game as a whole well the first conclusion is simply that it no longer matters who or what the ancient Builders were the creators of these bizarre ruins are gone now and to seek answers regarding their fate seems to be an ultimately fruitless Endeavor it isn’t the point to know everything but rather to know enough to understand the very small place you occupy in this allc consuming Universe additionally the Lovecraft interpretation offers a most odd perspective regarding what comes next for the game assuming that the structure in the middle of the ancient city is Truly is a portal and whatever Dimension it attaches to will likely be a far cry from anything we’ve seen before after all that is not dead which can Eternal lie and with strange aons even death may die in a game that is always updating and innovating one must wonder how much Of the past can truly remain dead or if these hints at Cosmic Origins are only the beginning thank you so much for watching and please do let me know if you want to see more content like this I decided to exclude a few of my crazier interpretations such as the Ender Dragon Being an avatar of naap but I could definitely make a part two if there is interest I’ll see you next Time Video Information

This is an idea I’ve been sitting on for a while, but I hope you guys enjoy! I do really think that Minecraft has a lot of potential when being interpreted through the lens of Lovecraft.
