Hello everyone my name is pixel riffs and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide I hope you’re all having a good day in today’s episode we’re going to step away from some of the industrial stuff we’ve been doing over here that little farming corner is looking more and more colorful by the Day and we’re going to go a little further a field to do something that is only actually going to require a pair of shears in order to execute that’s right we are going to go out in search of some turtles and we’re going to breed them to Get hold of the one remaining piece of armor that we have not got so far in the series that is the turtle shell helmet because the Shelmet as it is affectionately nicknamed by the community has a lot of interesting properties that we want to look at and I Think it’s probably time to do this before we get so far into the series and all of the other cool stuff we can do in this game that coming back and breeding some turtles feels kind of silly compared to all of the cool stuff we’re Doing in the future but if you find any Beach biome out here in your world you will probably encounter at least one turtle and there are probably a couple swimming around in the water over here as well we can take a look through the Spy glass and see that one is on its way now we’re going to grab some shears out of my ender chest and we’re going to go and acquire some seagrass from the area around here because that is the turtle’s preferred food and that is what the turtles require to breed you can find Seagrass in basically any ocean biome it’s all over the place and if you can’t find it you can simply bone meal any area underwater it can even be a water source you created yourself and you will usually get some seed grass out of that the tall seagrass from around here will Give us two pieces of seagrass which is going to be the perfect amount to breed two turtles together but we’ll grab a little bit of extra from here just in case and in this case it’s probably a good idea to catch these Turtles while they are near to land because this one Right here is up on land but these ones are in the water there’s a couple swimming around here actually and once they get up on land they are a lot less graceful than they are in the water but on land is where we need to breed them If we right click each of these with the seagrass you’ll see those heart particles pop up to indicate that they are ready to breed and you’ll notice some XP drops but a baby turtle does not immediately appear because the way Turtles breed is that two of them will Mate as you just saw and then they’ll go and find a sand block in a beach biome to lay their eggs and these turtles will only lay their eggs on Sand so if you’re trying to breed them elsewhere you need to bring sand blocks with you in order For that to happen it’s not going to happen if you don’t have some sand blocks around and in this this case the turtle seems to be a little bit ambivalent about exactly where they are laying their eggs so it might be a good idea for me to search around for another Pair of turtles just in case for whatever reason this breeding attempt has failed and in some cases the other Turtle might have been hanging around for too long and it might have blocked the area oh no this Turtle still giving it a try looks like they sort out Another sand block to make another attempt at laying their eggs in the meantime Knight has fallen the moon has risen and mobs are coming out to play around here and in this case you might be tempted to skip through the night using a bed and make it daytime but in The case of breeding Turtles that’s not always a good idea if this turtle is successful in laying a group of eggs around here and yes there will be a group of eggs usually get more than one the eggs actually need nighttime in order to hatch turtle eggs will not Begin hatching unless there has been one day night cycle and towards Dawn typically you’ll find that oh did we get something there we did yeah there we go a little cluster of three eggs has been laid so as I was saying once the night progresses and once it gets to maybe Like a few minutes before Dawn that is when turtle eggs have the highest chance of Aging one stage and cracking getting them closer to hatching some baby turtles so naturally in terms of a mob’s life cycle in the way that they breed Turtles are very different from other Mobs while other mobs come from spawn eggs in the creative mode inventory they don’t typically lay eggs in fact I believe the sniffer is the only other animal that lays an egg aside from my guest chickens but each of the eggs is treated kind of differently sniffers When they breed will drop an egg as an item for the player to collect chickens can be bred using seeds and that will produce a baby chicken but their eggs can also be thrown as items to potentially hatch baby chicks and turtle eggs will be laid as a block right here So we’re going to pick these up using a silk touch pickaxe and that’s the only way to obtain them as items once they are obtained as items you can place them separately they don’t need to be clustered together although you can have up to four in a single block space and In the early stages of turtle breeding it’s often a good idea to place these eggs separately for a couple of reasons the first of which being that they will receive that update that cracks the egg and progresses their stages of hatching kind of randomly so one of these eggs Could crack tonight while the other two might not but if I put the uncracked eggs together with the one that has started cracking that’s actually going to progress those to the first stage of having hatched and so it’s actually a way to speed up Turtle breeding if you Group the eggs together once they start cracking otherwise it can take multiple nights of waiting around for these eggs to crack by which time of course Phantoms will start to generate and you’ve got other problems defending them from mobs speaking of which turtle eggs are also unique in that they are the Target of Undead mobs aggression occasionally you will find that zombies wander out from this area and if they start to Target the turtle egg instead of the player their goal is to run over here jump up and down on the turtle egg and destroy it Creepers on the other Hand will pay them no mind so we’re going to get rid of this creeper ourselves but you’ll notice this zombie is wandering over and right now it looks like it’s targeting me but if I was out of the way it might end up targeting the turtle eggs skeletons on the other hand Will leave turtle eggs alone they’re only ever going to Target the player so we’re not going to worry too much about them but we do need to make sure that these eggs are defended from any zombies that would want to jump up up and down on them oh and this egg just started Hatching incredible so I was about to start putting blocks over the top of them just to make sure that zombies couldn’t jump up and down on them because you would find that when a zombie tries to Target a block that they can walk to if there’s a block directly Over this they’re not going to see this as a valid block to walk into and so they’re never going to end up jumping up and down on the eggs but as I mentioned right here we have a hatched egg in fact the other egg over here just started Hatching as well so this is an opportunity for us to take the unhatched egg and add it into this cluster right here where you’ll notice it has those little breaking lines around it which indicate that there is a chance for it to hatch and there may still be another Chance now that that cluster is put together that it can hatch another stage tonight but as I mentioned this happened right before Dawn it sort of happened when the moon was like a minute further back in the sky so that’s the time you want to be targeting in order to breed Some turtles and if you want to avoid Phantoms it’s probably a good idea to get in bed right before the sun rises to make sure that you end up decreasing that insomnia counter that tracks whether or not Phantoms will generate our friend the turtle has returns to check on their eggs and That’s not a mechanic that is necessarily programmed in they’re not here to look after the eggs as such but turtles will return to the beach where they originally spawned throughout their life effectively they remember where the beach is and will come back here frequently so if these turtles hatch in A beach biome the so if these Turtles here hatch in a beach biome and are released into the wild the same thing should occur with them they will actually mark this beach as their home and always come back here naturally for them to do that this beach needs to be Loaded so they’re not going to come back here when the player isn’t around in fact they’re probably just going to float out into the water somewhere and chill there until we return to this area but next time we’re back here there is a high chance that we would see exactly The same set of turtles in fact I’m going to use the seagrass to coax these Turtles back towards land and try and get them to breathe again because this is going to be sped up immensely if we have more than a couple of turtle eggs the ironic thing about breeding Turtles Is we try and make it as fast as possible despite the fact that Turtles themselves are actually pretty slow but that should mean we get another XP orb one of these Turtles should be ready to breed you’ll notice that the turtle that’s ready to lay eggs actually kind Of puffs up a little bit they actually get raised up by a pixel they get this sort of additional pouch to them and that should indicate that this turtle is ready to find a sand block on which to lay some eggs there we go we got another Set of eggs that looks like another group of three oh no we got all four eggs that time that’s great now we’re going to split these up once again just like we did with the previous ones I’m going to lay these out individually on the beach here but chances are once one Of these other eggs that’s already started hatching receives another hatching stage we’re going to Cluster these eggs together with that one and we should get a bunch of turtles that will all be born at the same time so at this point as you might imagine it’s a Waiting game we have to wait until Nightfall for the turtle eggs to progress R another stage of hatching so I’m just going to wait for the sun to go down and in the meantime I’m probably going to craft up some fences so that we can contain the baby turtles and prevent Them from escaping into the water once these eggs start Hatching okay the following morning we have a bunch of eggs that have now progressed to hatching St stage two which means they only have a couple more stages left and as we saw that night a couple of hatching stages can occur throughout that nighttime period where the hatching stages can progress which Means we might get a couple of Hatches the following night if we group some of these eggs together we’re going to identify using the F3 debug info on the right hand side there it will say hatch two while this one over here only says hatch one so we ideally want to group Our eggs with the eggs which have already progressed to hatching stage two so I’m going to group a couple of these together once again we’re going to put some blocks over the ones that are the most progressed and hopefully we should get a couple of these aging an Additional stage and hatching during the next night for that purpose I am going to set up a fence around the outside here just to make sure that our Turtles are well taken care of and we probably want to make sure that there are no water blocks that they can dip out into From this side because baby turtles are incredibly small so for now our Turtle Sanctuary is going to just be a fenced off area and we can always improve upon the turtles living conditions in future or we can release them into the sea once they are done growing up but for now we Want to make sure that the eggs are well protected and the turtles themselves aren’t going to escape before they have a chance to grow up it’s also worth noting that players can trample turtle eggs in much the same way that zombies can by jumping up and down on top of Them so in some cases if you’re the kind of player who likes to fidget and jump around a lot you might want to make sure you have these blocks over the top of the turtle eggs just in case you end up jumping on them by mistake while we’re Waiting for the next night to begin I might quickly breed up the turtles again just so we have a few more eggs to throw into here because we can stack as many as four in a single space and it looks like some of these might end up hatching Us a bunch of turtles tomorrow night so let’s guide these Turtles back onto the shore and see if we can breed another pair before that next night of hatching begins and not too long after we only have one egg remaining the one that was only a couple of stages hatched it might Even hatch one one more time and that should complete the hatching process before the night ends but look at this look at our little raft of turtles aren’t they all adorable we have 10 here total which is actually the ideal amount for us right now and at the moment They’re all looking at me because I’m holding some seagrass so they’re all very interested in what I’m doing if I put the seagrass away however they are apparently trying to pathfind towards the water over here so naturally that Turtle instinct is going to kick in they Want to go for a swim and that’s why we’ve got the fence around this entire Turtle Sanctuary or Turtle compound I suppose right now since they’re not really being allowed out anywhere we will get to that in a short amount of time but for now we’ll take down some of These obstructing blocks although I will just add some torches to the fence here to make sure the area is nice and well lit and our job now is really just to babysit these Turtles until they grow up when the baby turtles grow from these teeny tiny ones into full adults which Is kind of an incredible transformation considering how small they are the scale difference is kind of wild but they will an item called a turtle scoot that’s something we need to make sure we collect because that is the crafting ingredient for the turtle shell helmet If you want to speed up the process of course much like any baby animal you can feed turtles their preferred type of food and they will just start growing a little faster it will reduce the growth cool down that takes place once they arrive and is that a guardian noise that I hear that is something to be aware of I’m going to use some scaffolding to hop out of the fence real quick and make sure that no Guardians have drifted this far towards me because if they have that might present a problem for our Turtle population I know there is an ocean Monument out there and it may be that the Guardians are just targeting some of the nearby squid and that the sound effect is relatively close sounding but I think for the most part here we are okay anyway my job right now is to come down here to the ocean floor dig up a Bunch more seagrass using the shears and we got to feed a bunch of this to each of the turtles to speed up their growth process because honestly waiting around for 20 minutes just to make sure that the turtles grow is going to be a fairly tedious task if we don’t have anything Else to do around here by all means AFK it you know go and put the kettle on make yourself a cup of tea come back and make sure that you’ve got the area well lit or your player protected in a box so that you don’t get shot by skeletons or Eaten by zombies or anything in the meantime but we’ve got enough seagrass to feed each of these Turtles seven or eight pieces so we’re going to make sure that we have fed each of them individually and that should hopefully help with their growing process in the Meantime we don’t have to wait for it to be night anymore for these Turtles to grow the hatching process and the growing up process are two separate stages and the turtles don’t need night in order to grow so we can go back to sleeping through the nights if we want To alternatively if we want to keep breeding Turtles to get a bunch more of those Turtle scoots then we can obviously stack a few more eggs together with this one which is close to hatching now we should be able to breed a few more turtles in this area if we want to But now like everything with turtles this is simply a waiting game until these Turtles come of age grow up and drop those scoes Well one of our Turtles has done just that I think this might have been the one that I gave the extra seagrass to at the beginning but the item right here is what we are after that is a Scoot and as you can see it unlocks one recipe for The turtle shell helmet it should not be too long before the rest of these turtles grow up as well and as you can see the size difference between the adult turtle and the baby turtle is really something to be reckoned with I’m taking a screenshot of that just in case It makes for a good thumbnail but that size difference can actually cause the baby turtles that are pushed up against the corner of the fences like this to phase through the blocks at which point they will escape from whatever confines you have set up and make their way Towards the water this is why you don’t want to make the perimeter wall of your turtle Sanctuary out of solid blocks because there is a chance that the turtles can phase into those walls and suffocate and die you’ll still be able to pick up the turtle scoots but of Course the turtles won’t be able to breed anymore turtle eggs for you and you’ll end up with a few fewer turtles in the overall population which in Minecraft is not necessarily A Bad Thing to be honest because it can get very overpopulated with turtles considering that there’s no real reward for killing Them since you get the skuts by breeding them and letting the baby turtles grow up killing the turtles doesn’t actually yield any particularly useful items by killing Turtles you get seagrass and as I mentioned earlier seagrass can be harvested from the ocean floor you can grow extra with bone meal so there’s Really really no point to killing Turtles but even as they grow up we are just going to be left with a lot of turtles floating around in the world and chances are that’s just going to be a lot of mobs to hang out and take up some Processing power so I’m not going to advocate for killing the turtles but you may not want to keep them around for too long really what you do with the turtles beyond that point is up to you but there we go the turtles are now popping off we Are getting a ton of turtle scoes out of this and it looks like not too many of them are escaping the confines of the fence here there we go the scoots are popping left and right we have eight so far there are still probably a couple of Baby turtles in the mix here somewhere but gosh it gets difficult to see them after a while and there we go that is all 10 of them fully grown and now all 10 of them have dropped the scoots for me so I’m going to sneak out the side of This fence here I’m going to dive back down into the ocean over here we’re going to gather up a little bit more seagrass and before we let these Turtles loose into the ocean we’re going to make sure that they provide a few more turtle eggs so that we can keep those in case We want to do anything with them in future each of these Turtles should register the biome that we are currently in as their home Beach so they all should start digging around here in order to place those turtle eggs we’re going to have to defend them from Zombies for a little bit here as yep the turtle laying season is going wild on this beach and in case any of the turtles want to go swim free we’re going to take down all of these fences and simply let the Turtles out into the wild We’ve got a bunch of clusters of eggs here it seems like most of the turtles are done laying their offspring and they can drift off into the ocean to explode meanwhile I’m going to harvest all of these turtle eggs and just keep them in my inventory for the moment we can Always return to this area later and if we want to hatch more of them we can simply put them here next to this unhatched egg that’s already progressed a couple of stages and we’ll be able to get some baby turtles again in no time in future we’re actually going to use Some of these turtle eggs to take advantage of the fact that Undead mobs will sometimes track towards them this is specific to zombies but that also counts variance of zombies so we can use it as a way to farm drown potentially even zombie piglins from the nether so Turtle eggs are going to have a multitude of uses in future and we now have 21 of those that we can bring back here to hatch and create more turtles if we want to or use them for more technical purposes elsewhere in mob farms for now though the turtle Population around here is thriving and we’re going to head back to base so that we can discuss what we’re doing with these Turtle scoots and how to craft the turtle shell helmet all right here we are back at base the following day and it’s time to Put these scoots to good use as you can see the turtle shell has become a craftable recipe in our recipe book here and it’s made in exactly the same way as another helmet of another material would be using five scoots like so we’re going to grab two of those and the first one Of course we are going to wear because this can be worn much like another helmet and you’ll notice there when I equip it it’s always really funny seeing this cuz it blocks off the eyes on my Minecraft skin but when we equip it we are given a 10 second water breathing Effect that right now is infinite because we are on land so that’s just going to keep refreshing leaving the water breathing symbol in the top right hand corner there and notifying us that we can go swimming and stay underwater for an additional 10 seconds of breathing time naturally of course once You get into the water that’s going to start counting down from 10 seconds and beyond that point respiration and other enchantments will help but your breath meter will deplete as normal having said that though as soon as you step out of the water that water breathing effect is Going to refresh instantly giving you another 10 seconds so if you’re only diving for 10 seconds at a time that water breathing effect can be especially useful and you can just hop in and out of the water to refresh it unlike your oxygen meter which always takes a few Seconds for you to recover your full breath meter so that you can dive down for the longer amount of time now I mentioned enchanting just now and we are going to enchant one of these since it’s going to be a wearable helmet for us we get oh just protection four on that I Might try and roll that actually cuz I think we can probably do better if we we get multiple enchants on this that will be ideal protection 3 is not that great though but yeah we just got protection three that time so as you can see the Turtle shell helmet is not going to give us a ton of enchantments but there we go protection for Unbreaking 3 is pretty reasonable I think we can always add respiration and ACA Affinity using a book it feels silly not having respiration on the turtle shell helmet actually and of course you can add Mending to this if you want to it basically has exactly the same chance of getting enchantments than something like an iron helmet and in fact it gives you the same amount of armor protection as an iron helmet as well compare the plus two armor that the turtle shell gives us Here to the plus three armor and armor toughness plus the knockback resistance that we have on the netherite helmet it’s not as good as a diamond or netherite helmet it’s about the same as a regular iron helmet you can also see that in the armor bar there when we Equip it since I’ve got elytra on right now we’re only covering about 5 and 1/2 points of armor or 11 points of armor total since each of those is two points so while it is a unique interesting and stylish option to wear the turtle shell Helmet and it looks kind of goofy on me but that water breathing effect will come in handy it is ultimately not something I plan on wearing a great deal the extra 10 seconds of water breathing is functionally useful but is honestly not going to be a long-term enough Benefit that it is worth sacrificing all of the Extra Protection we get from a proper netherite helmet so at this point in the series while I’m happy to have the turtle shell I’m probably not going to be using it all that often however one other thing you should know about The turtle helmet is that like other types of armor it can be given an armor trim so we could break out the smithing table and let’s say the tide armor trim for example here let’s get a material that will stand out on the turtle shell let’s give it gold for example here We’ll throw down the smithing table the tide armor trim will throw our Enchanted turtle shell in there and as you can see we end up with a couple of gold stripes on there if we want to because we can trim the turtle shell helmet in much the Same way as you can other stuff however the hel helmet is where it ends in terms of a suit of armor which is why it’s not going on our armor display here because there is not a full suit of turtle armor there is just the helmet you can’t turn The scoots into a chest plate or leggings or boots or anything like that no Turtle scoot boots for you and as far as adding an armor trim to the turtle shell maybe we’ll do that in future but right now I don’t really feel like sacrificing a bunch more diamonds to Reproduce another one of these armor Trims and like I said I’m not planning on using the turtle shell as a standard piece piece of armor for the moment this Enchanted turtle shell is probably going to go in my backup gearbox where I’ve kept a few odds and ends some Interesting pieces of equipment and my backups netherite chest plate and elytra that kind of stuff but there is one more thing that we can do with a turtle shell helmet which is a little bit out of the ordinary and for that we are going to return to the brewing stand in here Which has some fire resistance potions I’ve been brewing up must remember to put some redstone on those later to increase the duration but if we Brew up some fresh potions using some regular water bottles and a Nether wart and then into our awkward potion we’re going to Add a turtle shell you’ll notice that the brewing stand accepts the turtle shell as an ingredient which means there are potions waiting for us and when that Brewing operation is done behold the potion of the turtle Master which applies both a positive status effect and a negative status effect the default Turtle Master potion gives us slowness four but resistance three now this is absolutely worth covering because remember the beacon that we have over at the guardian Farm I don’t know why I’m going outside you absolutely cannot see it from here but the beacons there can only give you a maximum status effect of Resistance 2 so by default this Turtle Master potion gives you a stronger resistance buff than anything else you can get in the game even eating an enchanted golden apple will only give you the resistance one effect although it does that for a much longer duration you get 5 minutes of resistance from an Enchanted golden apple you only get 20 seconds from from the potion of the turtle Master however we can increase the duration of both of these Effects by applying Redstone in much the same way we increase the duration of any other potion lengthening the duration of this Potion will get us 40 seconds of both effects and the effects remain at the same strength so we still get slowness 4 and resistance three but we get it for a much longer duration now unfortunately we can’t now increase the intensity of this effect using glowstone dust but if We did if we applied that to the base potion in instead of redstone we would be getting slowness six and resistance four of course we can turn them into splash potions using gunpowder as well but for now we are going to keep these potions of the turtle Master for another Time and maybe at some point we will need the potions of the turtle Master to get some advancements because there are some advancements in the game for having all of the potion effects at once I believe somewhere in here all right it’s actually in the nether advancements because the potion brewing originates From the nether having every potion effect applied at the same time gets you the a furious cocktail advancement and there is even a second hidden advancement Beyond this called how did we get here which requires you to have every status effect applied at the same time remember that there are some status Effects you can’t get from potions like haste which can only be acquired from beacons and darkness which you get from the warden there’s also mining fatigue from guardians nausea from puffer fish blindness from suspicious stew and levitation from shulkers so that’s definitely one of the trickier Challenges to set up I’ve done it in the past but I’ve done it when there were fewer status effects in the game so doing it in this season of the survival guide is going to be a true challenge but for now my friends we are just going To make do with having gotten a bunch of turtle eggs from this episode and being able to play around with the turtle shell helmet and a fun fact about turtle eggs since they will only hatch on Sand you can place them elsewhere as decorations without being concerned About these hatching into turtles so if you want to use them decoratively unlike sniffer eggs which we can place on any block and they will eventually hatch into a sniffer turtle eggs can be used as decoration if you feel like putting them in your world just make sure you Plant them somewhere that zombies won’t be able to jump up and down on them and smash them but to do our outro properly today I’m going to switch into the turtle shell helmet and place these turtle eggs in my hand to say thank you so much for watching this episode of the Minecraft Survival Guide my name has been pixel Rifts don’t forget to leave a like on this video If you enjoyed it subscribe if you want to see more The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20.2! In this tutorial, we breed turtles, explore the mechanics of turtle eggs, and craft the turtle shell helmet.
Turtles can be found on beaches, where breeding them with sea grass will encourage them to lay eggs! Unlike other eggs, these are placed in clusters by the turtle itself, can be separated using a silk touch tool and replaced individually, and will hatch on sand.
Once the hatched baby turtles grow into adults, they drop a Scute – an item which can be crafted into the Turtle Shell helmet, a unique piece of armour which gives 10 seconds of Water Breathing to the player. The Turtle Shell is also a brewing ingredient, giving the player access to Potion of the Turtle Master – which gives you a powerful pair of Slowness and Resistance effects!
Along the way, we look at how zombies are affected by turtle eggs, how to maximize the likelihood of turtle eggs hatching, and why turtles always return to the same beach to lay their eggs!
