Minecraft Mod Flattens 3D World Into Playable 2D

Creator BlendiByl posted a working demo today that renders the full Minecraft environment as a side scrolling 2D game while still running on the actual 3D engine with one click toggling between views and a public bug fixed release coming soon.

If you thought Minecraft had run out of new ways to look at the same blocks think again. Today BlendiByl dropped a mod that literally flattens the whole game into a 2D side scroller while keeping it running on the real 3D Minecraft engine underneath.

The attached video shows a player walking through a normal looking world that instantly snaps into classic 2D platformer mode complete with side view gravity and pixel perfect collisions. Hit the button again and it pops back to full 3D. Everything from mining to mob AI still works because none of the underlying simulation was replaced.

It is not a simple shader

In a follow up reply the creator explained that the 2D world is still the actual 3D Minecraft which created a bunch of rendering and collision headaches. That is what makes the demo impressive rather than just another visual gimmick. Bugs remain but a cleaned up version is on the way.

even in the 2D world we’re still actually in real 3D Minecraft and that came with lots of challenges. Will fix some bugs and release soon!

This is exactly the kind of low effort looking high effort technical flex the Java modding scene lives for. No corporate roadmap no Mojang approval just someone who wanted to see if it could be done and then did it in a way that still respects the original game.

Community reaction has been quick and positive with replies comparing it to Terraria while praising the seamless toggle. For anyone running Java Edition this is the sort of drop that makes you fire up the launcher and start testing immediately once the files are public.

No release date yet but the creator has committed to fixing the remaining issues first. In the meantime the video alone is worth watching just to see Minecraft worlds that suddenly look like they escaped from the 90s while still being the same blocky survival game we all know.
