This is the story of Glaedred, and how he almost deleted Minecraft in his quest to maintain the Balance within the Shroud.
“Before anything existed, there was a Shroud, and in it was a magical, immortal being named Notch. The world we know today did not exist, but was created from His own magic. One day, Notch got tired and lonely from being the only being in an empty universe, so he used his divine powers to fashion two new all-powerful entities into existence out of his very own magic. The result was the creation of the Overworld and the Void, two opposites to balance each other out. and to give Notch a purpose… maintaining The Balance. As time passed, Notch felt the exhaustion creeping in from the constant struggle of keeping the worlds separated, and one day was no longer able to keep them apart. He momentarily decided to step away from his creation, setting the worlds on a crash course with one another. The impact of the two entities colliding created the existence of two more all-powerful entities, albeit of smaller and weaker stature; the Nether and the End. The Nether, a tormented hell-scape derived from the Overworld, and the End, a shattered fractal of the Void, stood to create even more imbalances in the Shroud, and threaten Notch’s very own existence. Unfortunately for him, his creations were filled with too much of his own magic, and could not be killed. Realizing his grave mistake, that he cannot control his creations, he instead decided to double down… if he couldn’t maintain The Balance himself, he would continue to create beings until the conflict between the two sides was so inflated that no victory for either side could ever be so significant that it would throw the world out of Balance. Using the Overworld and the Nether, he was able to forge a powerful being that resembled Notch himself. This being was the God of Bedrock, Herobrine. Using the Nether and End, he was able to forge another powerful being, this time creating the God of Obsidian, Glaedred. Notch continued, so on and so forth, each generation of creations wielding slightly less power than the ones preceding it, until the world was populated with mortals of many different species, and Notch could rest. Notch eventually felt confident enough in his own work that he ultimately decided to leave the Shroud and venture off into the Unknown, leaving his work in the hands of those he left behind to do with what they must…
Herobrine and Glaedred, Gods of the Overworld, were the first generation of immortal beings that could be “killed”, but only for a short time. Their life force is ethereal, it’s tied to the very fabric of the Overworld, but when they are mortally wounded, their souls get trapped in the Void until they can accumulate enough of their life force to step through the Shroud and back into the Overworld.
Glaedred, being the God of Obsidian, really doesn’t like it when you mine the Obsidian Pillars in the End. They are a source of wisdom and power for him. Mining them threatens his powers, and thus the Shroud’s balance. He sees his role in the Shroud as an ambassador of Balance between the Nether and the End as paramount to the lives of any mortals who get in his way. Glaedred is old and ancient enough to have become desensitized to the lives of mortals, and is vindictive and defensive enough to do whatever it takes to protect his precious Obsidian Pillars. He doesn’t value human life the way he values The Balance. Thus, if a mere mortal dares to touch the precious Obsidian Pillars in the End, his wrath shall be unleashed upon them.”
