Pre-orders for Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2 went live this week and the headline is simple: if you already own a digital copy on the original Switch you can grab the Standard Edition on the new console for free.

The cutoff is the end of January 2027. After that the free upgrade path disappears. The game itself drops October 27 with Vibrant Visuals turned on by default improved performance and full cross-play via Microsoft accounts.
The Limited-Time Upgrade Path
Nintendo and Mojang made it explicit. Digital owners on the first Switch can pre-order the Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 at zero cost in most territories through the Nintendo eShop. Japan and Taiwan charge a small fee of 100 JPY or 30 NTD. The offer is only available until January 31 2027 and only through the eShop.

Three Tiers Available Now
- Standard Edition: $29.99 base game Super Mario Mash-Up Pack Vibrant Visuals
- Deluxe Collection: $39.99 adds Celebration Food Rescue Dogs Plenty O Blocks three exclusive Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins
- Ultimate Collection: $49.99 adds Decocraft and Weapons + Tools five exclusive Character Creator items and 1000 Minecoins
Every version bundles the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack. Physical copies are game-key cards sold at retail with no mentioned upgrade for existing physical owners. Online play still requires Nintendo Switch Online.
The launch is barely two weeks away. Pre-ordering now locks in the free or discounted upgrade before the window slams shut.
