How to Install and Use the ChangeSkinX Minecraft Plugin
About This Video
Changing your Minecraft skin is an essential part of the game, as every player in servers can see it. This also provides a way to personalize your account, making it a popular feature. However, switching skins in-game isn’t possible and may create frustration. Luckily, there’s an easy solution that involves a simplistic Spigot plugin, called ChangeSkinX. Using this on your server allows anyone to change their skin to another player’s one through one command. There are many other unique aspects to this plugin, so we’ve created this Apex Hosting video to showcase how to install and use ChangeSkinX on your Minecraft server.

Customizing your Minecraft account is an extremely important and popular feature in the game since it allows you to personalize your character for anyone to view. However, it’s not something you can do in-game. If this frustrates you and you wish you could just use a command to change your skin, then the ChangeSkinX plugin is here to help. All you need is a short command that instantly applies another player’s skin to your in-game character. With a management system to prevent certain skins from being used, it gives you more control over what sees the light of day.
To get started, head to the ChangeSkinX page on CurseForge and click on “Files” in the top menu. Find the version of the plugin that matches your game version, select it, and click the download button. Save the file in a location that is easily accessible for later.
Next, you’ll need to download the same version of ProtocolLIB, as it is a dependency plugin for ChangeSkinX. You can find it on the Spigot download page or use the provided link if you’re using Minecraft version 1.19 or higher.
1:27 INSTALLATION
Now, let’s install the plugins on your Minecraft server. Head to your Apex server panel, stop the server, and click on “FTP File Access” near the top left. Log in and navigate to the “plugins” directory. In the top left corner, click on “Upload” and drag the ChangeSkinX and ProtocolLIB files into the upload area on the next page. Wait for the upload to reach 100% and then use the server name at the top of the page to return to the main channel. Finally, restart the server to load the plugins.
2:01 GETTING STARTED
Once the server has loaded, join the server and run the “/plugins” command in-game to confirm that the installation was successful. You will notice a few new commands that are available to use. As long as you’re a server operator, you’ll be able to access these commands right away.
2:33 COMMANDS
The main function of the ChangeSkinX plugin is to allow players to change their skins using a command. To do this, you’ll need another player’s username. The plugin uses Mojang servers, so only existing skins can be used, not custom ones. There is only one command to use, but it has a few different arguments. For example, you can use either a username or the UUID to switch Minecraft skins. To use these commands, you’ll need to be a server operator or have the correct permissions. Make sure you have a permissions plugin like LuckPerms to manage them.
2:56 CONFIGURATION
If you want to customize the plugin settings or enable unique features, you can do so in the ChangeSkinX configuration file. For example, you can permit default skins, so players without any can instantly have one when they join. To make changes, stop the server and head to the FTP file access from the main panel. Log in, enter the “plugins” directory, and click on the “ChangeSkin” folder. Then, click on “Edit” next to the “config.yml” file. Make any desired changes and click “Save” at the top. Finally, return to the main panel and restart the server to apply the changes.
3:35 SKIN MANAGEMENT
If you want to avoid inappropriate or specific Minecraft skins, you can blacklist them. Enable the skin permissions setting in the plugin’s configuration file and add the negative version of the change skin whitelist node in your permissions manager. You can also create a whitelist in the same way using the provided commands in the config files.
4:07 COMMON ISSUES
If ChangeSkinX isn’t loading or working, double-check that you’ve installed ProtocolLIB, as it is a dependency for the plugin to work properly. Also, ensure that every plugin you download matches the version of the server you’re running. If you’re unable to change your skins, it might be due to a permissions issue. Make sure that the necessary permissions are granted in your node managing plugin. It could also be that there is a blacklist or whitelist set up, allowing only certain skins to work. If all else fails, it could be an issue with the Mojang servers or the account you’re using. Try using both the username and the UUID to see if either one works.
4:55 CONCLUSION
If you want to give your players the ability to switch their skins in-game as many times as they want, the ChangeSkinX plugin is the perfect solution. As long as they have the necessary permissions, they have free reign. However, with the ability to blacklist and whitelist skins, you still have control over which skins you see in your world. We hope this guide has been helpful, and as always, have lots of fun playing Minecraft!
