Before we get today’s video started i just want to thank pat at popularmmos for giving me the idea for today’s video the idea that he gave me was to find out how many unique ways minecraft can generate a world and for the sake of simplicity we’re gonna stick to one Version of the game at a time and just stick to normal world generation spawn settings well my first thought was it would ultimately boil down to how many possible seeds existed in minecraft from that point i began digging into this topic pretty hard and i’ve found the Answer so let’s just go ahead and let’s check it out So let’s dive into this at face value it feels like the easy answer to how many unique world spawns exist in minecraft is clearly infinite and if you think that you would be absolutely wrong to understand this we need to dive into two things how minecraft interprets seeds that have non-numerical characters in Them such as a through z any symbols or any letters from any alphabet for that matter and how many numerical only seeds the game will accept including negative numbers as you may have noticed if you’ve tried typing in your own seed into the game before that you can never use the slash Seed command in game and get back exactly what you typed in for the seed if it wasn’t strictly a positive or negative number this happens because minecraft runs a very simple math equation on any given seed that isn’t a number for every character that you type In on a keyboard each character has an ascii numerical value attached to it in the case of the capital h it’s 72 in the case of lowercase i it’s 105. the equation for how minecraft converts letters into numbers is quite simple actually it’s x times 31 raised to y Where x is the ascii value that i just mentioned and why is the original letter’s position on the string that you just typed in this is easier to understand when you look at what’s on screen the letter h is in position 1 and the letter i is in position 0. with all Of that in mind we can run the equation for each letter and then add the numbers together if we type in the slash seed command in minecraft after generating the world that you can see with the seed high we can see that the actual seed is in fact 2337 if you followed all that you might be asking yourself what the limit to this is well let’s get into that now the program that i’m using to quickly mess around with all of this is a seed previewing program called amidst which i’ve actually covered before in my five Awesome minecraft programs video when you type in a c to generate in this program it actually tells you the numerical value that it will convert into ahead of time so if i just start typing in random letters here we can see that the converted number will never be Over 2.147 billion or under negative 2.147 billion therefore the limit for non-numerical minecraft seeds is 2 raised to the 32 which is double the 32-bit integer limit once a non-numerical seed conversion hits the 32-bit integer limit it begins rolling over into the negative and then into the Positive and it’ll just rinse and repeat but what about numerical only seeds well these are treated a bit differently if we type in the 64-bit integer limit number into a midst and then increase it by just one we can see that minecraft will convert any numbers higher than the 64-bit integer limit or lower than the negative 64-bit integer limit into a string and then it’ll just run the conversion algorithm that i mentioned before so that’s the answer there are two to the 64 total possible seeds in minecraft or 18 quintillion 446 quadrillion 744 trillion 73 billion 709 million 551 616 total possible seeds in minecraft i do want to say though that there’s some quirky information about sea generation that i didn’t cover in this video like how some seeds will generate with exactly the same cave systems as other completely different seeds as liff on youtube the guy who discovered this Messed up minecraft seed has a couple of really in-depth videos on how this works so if you’re a math buff and you’re interested in getting some nitty gritty detail i’d highly recommend checking them out maybe one day i’ll understand all of it enough to do my own video on it we’ll see But anyways guys that just about does it for me for now if you enjoyed this video please leave a like on it because it would really help out myself the channel and the video quite a lot so i hope you all enjoyed my name is ant-man and i bid you all farewell Thanks so much for watching Video Information
