If you watched Minecraft Live and wondered when you would actually get to play with the ice caves, the wait is over. 26.4 Snapshot 3 is out now for Java Edition and it puts the entire promised package into your hands: a new cave biome, new blocks, a hostile mob with fresh mechanics, throwable ice balls, the Freezing effect, and some quality of life tweaks.
The Ice Caves Are Beautiful and Dangerous
These caves generate under cold overworld biomes and are built mostly from packed ice and calcite. Icicles dangle from ceilings and can grow long enough to become falling hazards that damage anything they land on. Ice crystals grow on floors and walls, emit light, and can be harvested. The biome skips glow lichen, relies on the new blocks for visibility, and lets strays and the new Frostbite spawn alongside normal cave mobs. Ores still appear but the environment itself now fights back.

Meet the Frostbite
This frozen zombie variant is the star of the update. It applies the Freezing effect on hit, slowing and eventually damaging you. Some spawn with ice balls that let them attack from range. Ice balls deal more damage the faster they travel, break on impact, and can be brewed into potions of freezing. The mob feels like a genuine evolution of the stray, tuned for the new caves and likely to punish players who treat underground exploration as routine.

Other changes include friends list UI improvements and 18 bug fixes. Mojang is clearly pushing the winter drop forward quickly after Minecraft Dungeons II launched and the September event. The snapshot is available through the launcher right now. Test it, break it, and send feedback through the official channels because this is the moment the community shapes what actually ships.
No massive drama or surprise controversy this time. Just straightforward, timely delivery of promised features with enough mechanical bite to matter. If the Frostbite and icicle physics hold up, this could be one of the more memorable cave updates in recent years.
