Ice Caves Go Live in Minecraft Preview

Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 brings the deadly frozen biome Mojang showed at Live straight into your world. Falling icicles, glowing crystals, a new freezing zombie variant called the Frostbite. Players are already testing how brutal it gets down there.

Brr. If you fired up Bedrock Preview in the last 24 hours you already know the temperature just dropped. Minecraft Preview 26.60.29 dropped yesterday and the star attraction is the Ice Caves now available under the Drop 4 of 2026 experimental feature.

What the Ice Caves Actually Look Like

They generate beneath cold Overworld biomes and are built almost entirely from packed ice and calcite with snow patches on the floor. No dirt no granite and no glow lichen. Instead you get icicles growing up to five blocks long from the ceiling and ice crystals that give off a soft glow as the main light source.

The icicles fall and deal damage if you light up the area wrong. Mojang basically turned cave ceilings into a trap system. Cold biomes finally feel dangerous and worth exploring.
  • Icicles detach when a torch is placed underneath them
  • Ice crystals grow on the floor emit light and can be harvested or placed by players
  • Ore pockets are plentiful in the stone and deepslate around the biome
  • Strays and the new Frostbite zombies are the main hostile spawns

Meet the Frostbite

This is not just a reskinned zombie. The Frostbite throws ice balls that deal damage and knockback. Up close it switches to melee that applies a stacking Freezing effect. You start shaking jump height drops and eventually it deals damage over time. Leather armor helps the same way it does against powder snow but the effect still applies.

Zombies and husks exposed to powder snow in these experimental worlds can convert into Frostbites. The freezing arrow is also craftable using a cauldron and potion of freezing. Everything ties together into a cohesive frozen combat loop.

This preview feels like Mojang actually listened to years of complaints about cold biomes being empty. The environmental storytelling with the crystals and icicles is genuinely pretty and the combat changes make it punishing in the best way.

The preview also includes a refreshed main menu UI some technical fixes for item duplication and faster Realms downloads. But nobody is talking about those. Everyone is building bases in the ice or speedrunning how fast the Frostbite can freeze them.

Feedback window is open at the usual Mojang link. The final drop lands in December so what you report now actually matters. If you have Bedrock Preview installed flip on the experimental toggle and go see how cold it really gets.
