Minecraft Cushions Reinvent Building, Travel and Redstone

After 17 years of players hiding boats in stairs just to sit down, Mojang added a simple craftable cushion. The community immediately turned it into high speed elevators, invisible doors, furniture packs and faster than minecart transport lines.

Seventeen years. That is how long Minecraft players have been improvising chairs by stuffing boats or minecarts inside stairs and slabs. As of the latest Bedrock Preview and Java snapshot, that era is over. The new cushion is a placeable, sittable block that comes in all 16 wool colors and crafts from three matching wool slabs.

On paper it sounds like a tiny decor addition. In practice the cushion has no collision, can be placed on almost any flat surface, aligns perfectly to the block beneath it, and lets players right click from a distance to sit. Remove the supporting block and it breaks. Mojang even added a one use straw bed made from hay bales that lets you skip the night without resetting your spawn point.

What Players Are Actually Doing With Them

  • Vertical elevators every six blocks using rapid sit teleportation
  • High speed travel lines faster than minecarts with zero slowdown
  • Invisible redstone doors and secret passages
  • Mod like furniture, detailed roofs, and seamless staircases
  • Illuminated dance floors and rainbow ice boat tracks
  • Döner kebabs, giant hats, and absurd decorative builds

Mojang handed players an entity with almost no restrictions and the community responded by breaking half the game in the best possible way. This is peak Minecraft.

The reaction on X has been nonstop since the preview launched. Builders like Knarfy, hatsondogs, Kaguya and amy have posted clips that make cushions look like the most impactful small feature in years. One creator called it genuinely unlimited. Another noted that minecarts are crying. A third simply posted a döner kebab made entirely from stacked cushions and the caption what have I done.

The official preview notes a known issue where cushions are not yet generating inside the new Abandoned Camps, but they are fully available in Creative and survive just fine when crafted. Early testing also shows they work beautifully with the Dappled Forest biome and the expanding experimental features headed for the third 2026 game drop.

with the new cushion we can finally make rainbow road ice boat tracks

Whether these mechanics survive into the final release is unknown. Snapshots and previews are for testing after all. But the sheer volume of creativity unleashed in the first week proves one thing: the community has been waiting for this kind of simple flexible block for a very long time. Right now it feels less like a chair and more like a new creative mode tool.
