You there’s a lot to be said for an OST that can be exceptional without drawing attention to itself an OST that serves as an integral part of a games experience without making itself the center of attention the Minecraft OST by c418 not only excels in both these Facets but it does so in a way that’s honestly kind of genius it’s a kind of musical chameleon it straddles the line between being something you might miss entirely and creating moments you experience in the game that you remember for years to come wow he’s really making a video on that Stupid kids game Minecraft stupid kids game cute can you believe this unbelievable we we really should have seen this coming they there was never any doubt undoubtedly minecraft more like more like mine bad absolutely minecraft more like hey buddy how’s your making a little Minecraft soundtrack video that’s that’s great man I’m I’m Happy for you I you think you’re better than me you think you bet you know you don’t think I got the Make no mistake some of the cuts on the Minecraft OST are straight-up bangers but overall the OST does a brilliant job and making you forget it exists to lull you into a state of game-like meditation but how does the minecraft OST achieve this lucid state of being c418 uses a Couple of nifty tricks that I think really contribute to the overall package in particular the first important point is the use of repetition in his music as an example we can use the song living mice released in 2011 the song is part of the original crop of songs that c4 Made for the game notch basically told them to run free-range kind of like this free-range chicken I dumpster Depok style only c418 had a much more peaceful life in reflection of that he injected his own thoughts on what he thought his soundtrack should reflect in the game C4 thought the best course of action was for his OST to mirror the gameplay experience you know that Zen state of am I awake or dreaming that minecraft so often induces living my sometimes plays in general gameplay I’m gonna let you have a listen to it because it’s truly a Beautiful piece of music through and through you Repetition makes you ignore what’s being repeated in fact I had living mice playing while writing this very portion of the script and completely forgot it was playing until I remembered to talk about it again in this very moment that’s what makes repetition such a powerful tool when you’re trying to Induce a calming state of relaxation or complete focus about you didn’t even notice I was playing this ticking clock sound effect in the background for the last minute now I’m just messing with you no but really it’s just how our brains are wired stimuli that aren’t novel are suppressed in favor of stimuli That are novel so that you know we noticed that speeding car that’s coming towards us instead of the sound of your neighbor’s lawn mower that’s been running for two hours straight by making the music very repetitive c4 might initially hook you with the song but after minutes of hitting grass blocks You eventually forget you’re listening to it until it ends and it becomes quiet and you just realize what a magical moment you’ve had kind of like waking up from a dream now this next mechanic for lack of a better word is honestly so cool which is the addition of randomly Generated musical experiences and what I mean by that is aside from the jukebox and the music discs you have no clue what song is about to play and you also have no clue when it’s about to play you could go ten minutes without hearing any Song at all or you could get ten songs back-to-back and that’s the secret sauce to what makes Minecraft so st so powerful when it comes down to it minecraft is a continuous stream of play there’s no ultimate authority on what says one moment is more significant than The other you know who can say my experience of bodying this chicken is more significant you know who can say my experience of absolutely bodying this chicken is more significant than your moment of falling into a huge ravine thinking you’re about to die only to survive by having a lucky landing In a patch of water no one can but the music makes these moments significant for you chances are when you’re grinding away doing whatever it is you have to do in your typical minecraft session and that one song comes on randomly at the perfect time you would tribute your own significance To that moment because the music makes that moment so much more sublime and memorable until you forget it’s plain scripted music is so common in video games we’ve come to associate music with something awesome happening bossfight we have epic boss fighting music discovery scene we have a mysterious musical zinger But in Minecraft there’s no saying when that next song is coming on but whenever it does you feel like something amazing is happening even if you’re just digging straight down into your inevitable death at least that’s how it feels for me I think in this case while the Minecraft OSC is stunningly gorgeous to listen to on its own it’s an OST made to highlight moments your moments not itself oh there we go I forgot I was listening to the OST again well there you have it the audio of my voice probably changed because I’m reclining in my chair right Now staring at the ceiling let me know what other what other what other OS teens you want me to cover okay this one was viewer-requested and I think I’m gonna open up the floor cuz I like I like this this is cool so let me Know what what do you want what do you want me to dive into next what do you want me to unearth uncover all right I’m I’ve overstayed my welcome see you later bye Video Information
