Xbox chief strategy officer Asha Sharma sent a company-wide note this week that quietly rewrites the top of Minecraft. Kayleen Walters is stepping away from Mojang to become president of a brand-new division called XP. Her replacement as CEO of Mojang and Minecraft is Maria Angelidou-Smith, who starts October 19.

Walters spent the last couple of years turning Minecraft merch, licensing and the movie into serious money. Under her the game passed 425 million copies sold, the Minecraft movie set opening-weekend records for a video-game adaptation, and the first theme-park deal landed. XP formalizes that work: Xbox Pictures, Products, Partnerships and Places. It is the division that will chase sequels, TV shows, live events and anything that keeps the brand printing outside the launcher.

The new Mojang boss has never shipped a game. She ran Facebook Groups for 1.8 billion monthly users, then product and monetization at Reddit. Mojang already has the dev team. What they were clearly shopping for was someone who knows how to extract value from huge online communities.

Sharma was blunt in the memo: Mojang has strong game talent, so the hire focused on large-scale community platforms and the commercial side. Angelidou-Smiths first stated priority is to listen to the teams and players. That has not stopped immediate speculation across news comments and forums that heavier Marketplace integration, account-level changes or new paid features are coming.

Microsoft has not announced any monetization shifts. The EU is already investigating virtual-currency practices in Minecraft and several other titles, but this leadership move is separate. Still, installing a monetization specialist at the exact moment the company spins up a dedicated franchise-expansion division is not subtle.

Maria brings deep experience to Mojang, along with a respect for what makes Minecraft special. Her first priority will be learning from the teams and communities who know Minecraft best.

That respect line is standard corporate language. What matters is the resume. Scaling Reddit monetization and Meta community products is not the same skill set as balancing Java modding freedoms or keeping anarchy servers playable. Players have watched the Marketplace grow for years. They know what a revenue-focused leader usually means for the parts of Minecraft that still feel like the original sandbox.

The timing lands weeks after the latest 26.4 snapshots and right as the Sift dimension talk heats up for 2027. Whether the new leadership accelerates features, tightens rules around servers and mods, or simply leaves the Java side alone while pushing Bedrock and merch harder remains to be seen. For now the only concrete fact is that the person who will set Mojangs commercial tone spent the last decade perfecting ways to keep users spending inside giant social platforms.
