The first major system requirements overhaul since the game's early days targets 1080p 60 FPS on Fancy settings and drops guarantees for low end hardware as Vulkan support arrives.
After 17 years of modest hardware demands Minecraft Java Edition is no longer pretending it can deliver a good experience on ancient PCs. Mojang updated the official system requirements on July 21 and the message is clear: older devices may still launch the game but expect low frame rates long load times and visual glitches.
New Performance Targets
The updated minimum targets 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings. That requires a 64 bit OS a 4 core CPU Vulkan 1.3 support 2GB VRAM and either 8GB RAM with a discrete GPU or 12GB with integrated graphics. Recommended specs jump to 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy with 16GB RAM and stronger CPUs and GPUs such as an Intel Core i5 12400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600 paired with an RTX 2060 class card.
The move also paves the way for a shift from OpenGL to Vulkan. Mojang stated they want to be transparent about what hardware can actually run the game smoothly instead of letting players discover performance problems themselves. Bedrock Edition retains lower requirements for now.
Players on older systems still have options. Older Minecraft versions are unaffected by the new specs and many can continue playing on servers that have not updated. For everyone else this is the official signal that it is time to upgrade if you want the full current experience.
