Mojang Raises Minecraft Java System Requirements

After 17 years the game has outgrown old hardware. New minimum specs demand Vulkan 1.3 GPUs more RAM and stronger processors. Some players are about to feel the cutoff.

Mojang just made it official: Minecraft Java Edition needs better hardware to keep running well. The new system requirements announced July 21 mark the first major update to these specs in years. After more than 17 years of continuous growth the game has simply become too demanding for the potato PCs it once ran on without complaint.

What The New Specs Actually Require

  • Minimum: 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast preset 4 core CPU 8 GB RAM with discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated Vulkan 1.3 capable graphics with at least 2 GB VRAM
  • Recommended: 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy preset modern multi core CPU 16 GB RAM graphics card with 6 GB VRAM

The shift moves away from ancient OpenGL expectations toward Vulkan 1.3. Mojang says this clearer baseline will help them continue adding features without being dragged down by legacy support. Older machines that barely scraped by before are now explicitly warned they will struggle.

This is Mojang admitting what players with 10 year old laptops already suspected. The block game is no longer lightweight. Choosing to prioritize future development over keeping every ancient rig compatible is the correct call even if it annoys part of the audience.

The announcement dropped alongside the latest 26.3 snapshot which itself focuses on technical updates shader improvements and bug fixes. Creator ibxtoycat covered both in a video titled as something Mojang might regret. Reactions on X show players checking their specs and noting the 16 GB RAM recommendation in particular.

Server owners and modded players should take note. Larger worlds heavier resource packs and future updates will lean harder on CPU GPU and memory. Those still running integrated graphics from the early 2010s or less than 8 GB RAM may need to upgrade or accept lower performance and potential incompatibility down the line.
